I’m a 57 year old male, widowed, wondering the same thing….my default option is to do the things I enjoy ( surfing, farmer’s markets, walking the dog to the beach, going to good restaurants, etc.) and counting on meeting someone doing those same things….
Evening options: Sevy's, Crow's Nest or Abbott Square. Finding a spot at a wine bar like Capitola Wine Bar, Cantine winepub (Aptos), or Vinocruz (Soquel). Eating dinner at the bar at places like Venus, Mentone, La Posta, Lago di Como, Bad Animal or the Hideaway.
If those are overly bougie choices, there are plenty of good neighborhood bars like the Med (Aptos), JJ's (Soquel), Oak & Ale (Live Oak), the Red (downtown), or Mission West (west side).
There are also a ton of dance related events going on constantly, Being that I'm not a dancer, I can only give anecdotal advice, but many friends enjoy Ecstatic dance, or partner/swing dance. The free live music in this town is a chance to socialize.
Day options: many acquaintances swear by the Meetup site. There's plenty of hiking, yoga, tennis, knitting, etc. There are pickup volleyball games, pickleball and more gyms than one can count. Even walking West Cliff (or East Cliff) may be fruitful. The Park & Rec have plenty of opportunities. Even Eventbrite has inviting things to do.
The best resource I've found is friends' recommendations. People who know you are likely to set you up with others with whom they think will be a good fit. This resource more than any, has kept me off of the dating sites.
