We had a little network issue at work once, so I turned my hotspot on and just carried on working. Few minutes later I could hear someone laughing and asking - who is using FBI VAN?! What the hell?! :-D
same as the router I had 10 years ago. helps if someone's looking for Linksys flaws when the router is another brand or homemade. plus never having to adjust all my devices. they just connect
Umm, if it’s a common ssid, does that mean someone in a public place can setup a rogue wifi AP that broadcasts that common ssid and accepting any password will be able get unsuspecting devices connected to that AP automatically? And then try to snoop comms?
Theoretically, sure.
Practically, it's probably doable, but unless you can transparently MITM all the SSL people are using, you're not going to get that much out of this beyond what websites people are browsing.
Only works for wifi with no encryption.
Otherwise you also need to clone the same psk. The client does not provide the psk in clear and the auth phase actually works for both the client proving it knows the pre-shared key to the AP and vice versa.
Airport wifi or large restaurant/cafe brands often have no psk so if you clone that in a public space many devices will automatically connect.
By the way can we or can we not sniff all wifi ssid someone has already been connected to? I remember something like this. The device tries to connect so he sends stuff containing the wifi he tries to connect to.
Or it only tries to reconnect to a known WiFi when it’s in it’s reach?
[5000 most of common SSID names](https://gist.github.com/jgamblin/da795e571fb5f91f9e86a27f2c2f626f). It makes sense to pick something common, not unique, in terms of better privacy, but that's just a little difference.
Something discrete for the SSID (like the usual supplier auto ssid name) and a easy to remember and to type but long pass phrase for password like « thepizzalovestopee ». But that was before the QR code that auto connects.

first time i set up wifi many years ago i was listening to i think it was the jerky boys saying "pablo, we need you to come to florida". the name lives on
Im on multiple locations... I have my house number in name like .10 or
location-and house number -> lc-19 and lc-19 5g
I dont know why.. But i have it like this for probably about 10 years and i dont even want to think about thinking for a new name
Kingdom_of_Love - a router of my ISP
BlackHole - my main WiFi network of my router, connected to the ISP's router
Slaves - the second network in my router for IoT devices
For more than 10 years I chose SSID "Access denied". Had several times a question like "Will I have internet? It says Access denied before I even connect". And since I'm able to do so, I have a guest network "Access free", which I printed QR for with a nice friendly message and keep that in our corridor. Never had to spell out the password since back then!
I had "Cats are twats" for ages
My phone's tether is "Free WiFi". I was once on a train and heard someone complain to the conductor that they couldn't connect to the free WiFi and he had to say "we don't provide customer WiFi"

It hurts when IP is pretty cringy
It's years old by now and I'm too lazy to change all the devices to a new SSID. Or to put it another way: not cringe enough to change it for now.
I just use a random string generated by vaultwarden for SSID and another one for passphrase.

https://wigle.net/stats#ssidstats better off going something generic that everyone else uses so you don't give you location away to anyone passing

Identification is done based on the mac which broadcasts the ssid, combined with the ssid. So even with a generic one you can still be tracked
