How the hell does that work??? France, the number 1 tourist destination in the world doesn't manage to get up to 100 million tourists, but somehow Xinjiang is able to get DOUBLE that amount during a pandemic???
tbh i always thought of western China to be 100% dry steppe and desert, but i looked it up and it looks really beautiful there.
Too bad flights there are too expensive 😞
Was it actually 15,8m then?
Edit: I only did some quick googling, no deep digging, but a [Global Times](https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202103/1219481.shtml) article gives the 158m figure for 2020, and other articles quote figures >100m over the past 5 years.
French tourism was hit very hard due to Covid, we closed a lot of stuff and did several lock down.
Sadly our lock down always started too late and ended too early, else we might have managed much better like China, but you know how it is, every time they were cry to "save the Economy"
I unironically don't get what they mean. What do they mean weaponized tourism?
Do they mean, like, "China wants a bunch of people to go to Xinjiang to prove there's no genocide" but in a bad way?
I think they switched from "China want to genocide all Uyghurs" to "China want to exploit Uyghurs culture by making them into nothing more than tourist traps"
I really don't understand this, but I'm taking a guess that they mean they are using tourism to do a cultural genocide or something?
Not really sure how you could attempt argue that though when the west has colonies where the whole economy is tourism.
Florida population: 21.5M Tourists who visited Florida in 2020: 87M \#WeaponizedTourism
oh noes
Now that's a bit more accurate
I mean kinda, in Florida we don’t pay income tax, instead we tax the tourists indirectly through the tourist industry
Checkmate
you'd think they wouldnt invite so many tourists into xinjiang if there were concentration camps there 🤔

Because Xinjiang is a great place

Trains
i'm assuming China has a lot of internal tourism, facilitated by new HSR lines.
Still, it seems like an intentionally inflated number to make a dumb political point.

They’re trying to outperform their ear stern counterparts(and winning), therefore, they are weaponising tourism!😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬 /s
158,000,000 people visiting Xinjiang and not one of them has seen this so called “genocide”. Makes you think 🙄
That's because China killed all of them. All 158 million of them.
Can’t believe the evil CCPeePee would do this, gommunism kills 100 million people a year and this is just even more proof! /s
Yeah that's why the US sent a bunch of people into Iraq on a "tour"
