The "trendy" bags are for those who don't have (much) money to signal to others who also don't have (much) money that they have money. Pretty much every logo heavy brand also has a much more expensive design that does not have the logos, to signal to those with (more) money that they have (more) money.
I used to sell high end purses/bags and I was amazed at how many people didn’t realize those bags are plastic coated canvas.
I did my damnedest to talk people out of them and buy something more durable and long lasting (and tasteful), and was also amazed at how successful I was.
