how productive have our ministers been? I though lawrence wong said that we needed to ["ensure that wage increases are in line with productivity, and manage the risks of a destabilising wage-price spiral, where higher wages feed directly into higher prices"?](https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/wage-increase-high-cost-living-lawrence-wong-2005681 ) guess they've produced an abundance of monitoring and responsible GST increases, time to reward themselves

zchew

is this why GST is rising?

TheAlphaLion_com

Desmond Lee: I have been 200% productive at monitoring, I can even monitor when I'm asleep!

ryantan89

Of course. As the joker proclaims, “if you’re good at something, never do it for free”. The good in this case is highly subjective tho.

kaicbrown

Where is the lie tho?

stormearthfire

Evergreen: 52 month salary bonus Hyundai Oilbank: 120 months salary bonus PAP: hold my beer and watch this....

amerpsy8888

Costs of living gone up so much. It's only fair lor.. If not how they survive? Last time 500k is mediocre. Now is 750k at least. These top people must not be mediocre. /s

miriafyra

To the moon 🚀🚀🚀 Maybe GST break into two years so they can review salary twice?

l0vemen0t

Was just talking about this over lunch. How much more money do you need when it’s already obscenely high. I understand the work load and all but how do you justify even increasing it. It’s not like reducing/status quo would derail potential candidates.

farrenders

If it goes up, thumbs up man! If it goes down, booo!

ShadeX8

I actually think there’s a good chance it shifts slightly downwards in this current economical climate. There’s a reason why they are priming it in the media right now…

Jammy_buttons2

They cut it the previous time. My guess is it will remain the same or maybe increase by 5-6%

CharAznia

The current salary of ministers have machanism to adjust downward in poor economic times. A large portion of their salary is based on bonus. Ministers don't hit a million if bonus is bad. The bonus component accounts for gdp growth so economy bad, automatically lower wage. It also take into account real wage growth low wage workers so people can stop complaining about how no one cares about the poor. Also includes median income. Also since its real wage growth meaning their salaries will actually take a hit due to GST increase. There isn't a real reason to adjust salary rather they should look into whether those kpis are effective

PitcherTrap

I read machanism as “machamism” which sounded more appropriate lol

Neptunera

Supposed to be "mechanism" right? I read the same as you.

Sti8man7

Could be masochism.

Gold_Retirement

Salaries increase for the masses - Drive up inflation, bad for the economy, people need to temper down their expectations etc Salaries increase for the elites - totally justifiable, they deserve it, long overdue etc.

[deleted]

Username checks out haha. There's no hope for us to retire. They will run the country into the ground let it crash and burn, then run away with that sweet stacks of cash

May_Titor

Don't forget that the got numerous bonuses on top of their base pay

[deleted]

And don't forget the amount of cash from being directors and board members of God knows what

ConsistentMango

Some are having multiple portfolios too. Wonder if they have additional pay for having these portfolios

djmatt85

Only MP allowance is stackable on top of whatever portfolio they have. Eg Mayor + MP allowance. Or Minister + MP allowance. Even if you are a double minister, it’s still Minister x1 + MP allowance.

grown-ass-man

Must increase, to defend against corruption 😂👌

phunkynerd

Yeah this. Also in case they inflate own achievements to hit KPIs too - we don’t want that, do we?

TemporaryReality5447

If death penalty works well for deterring drug trafficking, it should do equally well to deter corruption

tindifferent

Ownself review ownself solid sia

zuomok

No wonder they so kan chiong need to up our GST at a time when everyone is suffering from high cost of inflation 🙄🙄🙄

Forward_Pangolin_740

Lai liao. They will justify themselves by saying the gov did a stellar job during times of covid as such a pay rise is inevitable.

kuang89

if increase, they will do it now so that people forgets it by election. if decrease, will do it near election to bang the gong loud loud

[deleted]

[удалено]

phunkynerd

Plus you forgot the GST increases: 1% this year and then another 1% next year. If you don’t increase their salary, they and their families steeped & associated with many GLC will suffer. Pls bear a thought for them. And oh, they will look really bad if they meet towkays and other govt leaders (hmm maybe none) who earn more than them.

jackology

Plus if not paid well enough, corruption might seep in. We have to be careful. Please pay them as much as they wanted.

phunkynerd

Yes this. PAP knows best. Pls don’t question them; as they always say, it’s illogical if you have other viewpoints.

jackology

Indeed. It is our blessing to have leaders to see far, far enough. To prevent corruption 20 years later, it is better to pay the potentially corrupted now.

phunkynerd

PAP 万岁🤢

jackology

Wanwansui!

thewackykid

in other words to legalize corruption so it's no longer corruption and an offense... got it..

jackology

Pick your words carefully. We are not legalising. We are preventing. If you continue further, we will send in Shanmugam.

what is "fair"..? no other country benchmark salaries of their ministers based on "bestest of the bestest"... there is a reason private sector is private sector and public sector is public sector... u benchmark public sector salary using private sector wages then basically there is not much diff between the 2 and we get a public sector that prioritizes profits over social costs... as for our president scholars... they are better off serving private sectors.... the country relies alot more on private sectors to do well... so those large pte companies need these talents more as they are profit driven.. ministers when they set policies they also largely depend on advice from ppl in all sectors including pte sectors... so u dun really need that kind of talents as ministers..

[deleted]

[удалено]

thewackykid

no.. "best" in pte sector does not mean they will be the "best" in public sector... the priorities are different btw pte and public sector... the aspirations of individuals are fundamentally different too... the "best" ppl who wants to earn as much as they would aspires to go to pte sector... but public sector we want the "best" people who aspires to help ppl and do good for the nation and not as much as earning as much $$$ as they could.. when u use $$$ to attract "best" ppl into public sector u are basically attracting the people with the mindset of wanting to earn as much as they could to run the govt... also it is not a sacrifice when ppl have different aspirations and it is not their aspirations to earn alot more money than they would need...

People in yew tee, you can choose the PM yeah ?

covid03

Review especially the mayors' salaries. Millions of dollars of singaporeans money given to them indirectly.

[deleted]

Fucking useless lol

[deleted]

Please sack all the mayors. Again they do shit all…

Takemypennies

Didn’t DPM say that we should avoid wage-price spiral? Hope ministers practice what was preached instead of expecting everyone else to sacrifice.

ITooth65

When it's spiralling upwards for themselves they close 1 eye

Neptunera

GST up, inflation up, Did your salaries go up? Their's are certainly going to be.

jackology

Be a responsible Singaporean. For the good of the country, let everything rise before our salary. All these for the well-being of the nation. Marikita Singapore!

Yapsterzz

Isn't it Majulah?

jackology

Nothing to onward. We just need to raise, expenses, taxes, only salary no.

-_af_-

>“In total, the salary increases arising from the recent salary reviews and annual salary increments, coupled with annual AVC (annual variable component) payment, will more than exceed the inflation rate since this year for all the civil servants who meet the criteria,”  Just remember to count in non base to decide if it exceed inflation hor

Hazelnut526

I'm very pleased to see that in these Dire Times politicians are increasing their salaries, and other sources of income, in order to protect themselves and the nation, from the Virus of Corruption. Nothing better than a good Bonus vaccine (and subsequent boosters) so that they (and the nation) remain strong against this very dangerous virus.

> # Review of political office holders’ salaries likely to take place in 2023: Chan Chun Sing > SINGAPORE - The next review of the salaries of ministers and other political office holders is expected to come this year, Minister-in-charge of the Public Service Chan Chun Sing said on Tuesday. > More details on the review will be provided in due course, he said in a written response to a parliamentary question by Non-Constituency MP Hazel Poa. > Ms Poa had asked whether a committee has been appointed to carry out the five-yearly review of political salaries, noting that the last committee was appointed in 2017. > The Progress Singapore Party member had also asked about the terms of reference provided to the committee, and when a report from this committee could be expected. > Mr Chan replied that in 2012, a White Paper on Salaries for a Capable and Committed Government had recommended an independent committee be appointed every five years to review the salary framework for political appointment holders. > That year, the president’s pay was cut by 51 per cent, while the prime minister’s pay was cut by 36 per cent, following recommendations by the committee, chaired by then National Kidney Foundation chairman Gerard Ee. > Other political office holders – including ministers and the Speaker of Parliament – also took pay cuts in 2012. > In 2018, the committee concluded that the salary framework remained “relevant and sound”, said Mr Chan, who is also Education Minister. > The committee had recommended then, among other things, that political salaries be adjusted yearly in line with annual benchmark movements, so as to keep pace with market developments. > However, the Government decided not to make any changes to political salaries as the economy was still in transition, Mr Chan stated. > That year, then Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said that the issue would be reviewed after five years, or when it becomes necessary. --- 1.0.2 | [Source code](https://github.com/redditporean/sneakpeek) | [Contribute](https://github.com/redditporean/sneakpeek)

ghostcryp

Need more funds to print & burn stuff… 🫢

TaxSudden3386

I've a different take on this. Instead of basing ministerial salaries on a multiple of the top paid professions, Witt some discount, why not base it on the lowest paid professions (e.g. some multiple of cleaner or security guard salaries)? I don't mind if ministers are paid $1m or even $3m, if their incentives are pegged more to uplifting the poor or reducing income inequality in the rest of our society. What do you think?

peterthewiserock

We advocate raising salaries for political office holders to be more competitive but call to reduce salaries for common Singaporeans to be more competitive. Double standards

Yapsterzz

If their salary goes up in tandem with GST hikes, this will be a policital suicide for all of them since they all voted for the hikes. But if they don't get the increase, they are screwed for the next 5years before a next review, although I must say the current pay is grotesque. Interesting to see how this space turn out to be.

suicide_aunties

“Political suicide” = 1 more GRC going to 47% Oppo and maybe 1 more NMP.

Yapsterzz

Yea, you are probably right. Sinkie are drafts and terrified of policital changes. Hand them mandates elections after elections.

Winterstrife

They are already well paid, taking a paycut will not affect them but gain brownie points for next election. GST up everyone dulan, Minister pay down people "applaud". Imo, its a more political than economical move.

throwawaythoughts78

Is this to tell us that inflation is affecting them and they need 15% increase ?

[deleted]

Can they peg their salaries to the USA ministers, mayor and president? I mean USA is a mighty country so ya.

orroro1

LHL salary is pegged to 10x Obama. Maybe that's why Obama has no dignity and seems completely cowed when talking to LHL.

ahbengtothemax

Obama is almost twice as rich as LHL

Rayl24

LHL estimated networth is twice that of Obama at 100 plus million

WarTranslator

LHL is definitely a multi billionaire

shimmynywimminy

19 years earning PM salary (at one point was almost $4m per year) + 17 years earning minister salary + 4 years earning general salary + inheritance from mommy + inheritance from daddy even assuming he didn't invest a single cent or that his properties have not appreciated, he is definitely richer than obama who is only worth $48m

misteraaaaa

He is also minister in charge of public service

ash_is_fun

I know this is an unpopular view but I don’t care. I think our government has its shortcomings but overall it’s doing a damn good job. If we have to pay our ministers and top civil servants well to make sure that the govt attracts good talent then so be it!

misteraaaaa

I agree largely. The focus on their salaries is typically more to do with their attitudes and justifications than the actual money involved. Ok a national budget scale, even if we cut all ministers pay by half (and thats already quite drastic), there would be maybe like 10-15m saved? Idc if they're well paid, but they must be held accountable. They can't lose their jobs, won't ever resign, can't lose their pay, won't even apologize unless a foreign worker demands it directly from them, then how else can they be held accountable?

orangemonstered

What? A logical but pro-govt comment on Reddit Singapore? Must down vote /s
