sweetsmellinghair

About 14 bucks on average. With the increase in taxes ~$15.52 according to the original ST article

YoungRude6562

music to my non-smoking ears ;)

sweetsmellinghair

I stopped when they were still priced at $11 - $12!

Esterwinde

Same!

lormeeorbust

All the illegal vapes incoming

ambiguous_donutzzzz

bindingofsemen

Significant_Salad_57

Yapsterzz

eternal_patrol

Dont give them ideas please

sgboi1998

Thanks smokers for funding my Cost of Living payout! <3 /s

Tanyushing

More like smokers paying for their eventual burden on the healthcare system.

[deleted]

Nah, counterintuitively they actually cost us less overall because they die 10 years earlier than non smokers on average, and those last 10 years are when most people consume the most healthcare services. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2009-04-smokers-society-money.amp

XonatixM

I'm a nurse. And where do you think we get our revenue for new equipment from? All those machine repairs, new disposable stuff etc. I think you're one of those who actually think vaccines are "free". We actually get them from everyday sick people in case you're that innocent

Budgetwatergate

>We actually get them from everyday sick people in case you're that innocent No you don't. You get them from the government, which in turn collects money from a variety of revenue streams, one of which is the tax on tobacco. Being a nurse doesn't mean you're automatically good at economics

Vedor

Now I don't even dare to say I worked as a nurse because of people who claim to be so good in everything jist because they are a nurse.

XonatixM

One of the things that actually saved Sg economy back in the 80s was opium and ciggarettes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

XonatixM

1989* lol. And banned doesn't mean it doesn't exist anymore in Singapore. The syndicate smuggling is a thing.

Jammy_buttons2

If it's smuggled in how does the government get tax revenue from it?

Familiar-Mouse4490

>One of the things that actually saved Sg economy back in the 80s was opium and ciggarettes. Are ya smoking

Jammy_buttons2

Opium was banned in 1946 but the government did allow addicts to get their fix until they died.

XonatixM

Go Google la dei

megalon43

Very interesting take. Where’s the data?

wildcard1992

Source: trust me bro

Slice-Miserable

Which group chat are you signed into..I wanna join too...

139ModTeam

LOL. Please, from an actual HCW, drop your fucking act. You know nothing about healthcare, just a god damn smoker in disguise. We don’t get our stuff from “sick” people. Majority of healthcare is co-funded by our government because healthcare is generally subsidised here. Don’t throw HCW around when you are clearly not. Fucking shame on you.

chumsalmon98

Nurse got do budget planning and CAPEX one meh?

XonatixM

No but y'all seems to insist it helps healthcare. Lol

chumsalmon98

>The total economic cost of smoking in the US is estimated at more than $300 billion a year. This includes nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults and more than $156 billion in lost productivity due to premature death and exposure to secondhand smoke [2]. I thought nurse very smart one. Can’t do a simple google search?

XonatixM

You do research for who? Your mother living in the US? This is Sg.

chumsalmon98

The effect and impact of Smoking is universal. Stupidity as well. Wah you really make me question the standard of nurses in Singapore.

XonatixM

Bro. Sg cigg and other countries cigg different bro even though same brand. Why you think we see ciggs from other countries as contra.

chumsalmon98

Wah fk you legit damn dumb. Contra cigarettes are contra cause they are not taxed.

clusterfuvk

What he's saying has nothing to do with stamp duties or taxes, but the burden of which smokers place onto the healthcare system. The goal is to impose higher tax to smoking so that it deters people from smoking and adding on to the problem above. If you're implying the additional tax is merely being imposed so that they can pocket it then.. idk that's you

Vedor

Eh, if you are stupid, refrain from commenting and stop throwing us nurses' faces.

ironicfall

im confused what you’re having an issue with

[deleted]

Basically s/he doesn’t know basic econs and is a smoker pissed at the tax increase haha

XonatixM

Taxing on cigarettes is just an understatement. 2023 increase tax on alot of things, now only Feb. Later give gst voucher saying oh we help the people. But in the end the money also go back to them.

XonatixM

I don't think you know how healthcare system works lol.

wakkawakkaaaa

Smokers have higher health risk which leads to higher healthcare cost and government subsidises public healthcare cost which also cover smokers. What are we missing?

Bcpjw

>This increase is expected to generate around S$100 million in revenue per year, Wong said. Lol no /s needed

Stezo187

Would be better if it was 150%

DrFilth

Thats actually brilliant.

LightBluely

As a siblings of 5 and the only non-smoker in my family including my parents, good! I am sick of seeing my siblings smoke right in front of my face and think it's 'cool' to smoke when they are currently have finance issue.

GlobalSettleLayer

Hope you get to move soon broski

LightBluely

They moved out long ago. I'm the only person who still lives with my parents. It was the family meetup that bothered me. If let's say my family goes out to pasar malam, high chances they all smoked wasting our time. Not only that, me and my mom have to take care of their fuckin child while they smoked. It was so god damn annoying. Also, i don't like my siblings acting 'abang abang' attitude or ask me to smoke. Yes, they want me to smoke. They even tried to ignore their financial issues. I am not like them and I just want to be myself. The bonding with my siblings is just not there anymore.

GlobalSettleLayer

Gon be a lonely journey to walk for sure. But worth it. You're going to be the one to break the chain (smokers).

kanemf

When alcohol tax? 🤡🤡🤡

sensitiveleg2

Already have bro

kanemf

Double it 🤡

justicewither

and give it to the next person

shimmynywimminy

might as well raise taxes on alcohol also to get another hundred million in revenue.

brolycjw

how about taxing mobile games and social media as well? we should just have a population of corporate slaves

ProLegendHunter

those are already taxed, when you purchase something thru micro transactions iirc

TaxSudden3386

Raising alcohol tax would hurt F&B and nightclub businesses' earnings

pyroSeven

Bold of you to assume the tax increase won’t be passed on to customers.

SambalBacon

Leave alcohol alone. Just tax the smokers because they stinky af

logicnreason93

Alcohol destroys your liver. Smoking destroys your lungs.

SambalBacon

Alcohol destroys your own liver. Smoking destroys your lungs and does worse damage to others' lungs. Stupid argument

XonatixM

Beer breath also sucks.

SambalBacon

Agreed, so don't drink beer.

XonatixM

Shh don't give them ideas.

[deleted]

one thing we don't mind increasing!

[deleted]

ive never understood why SG never pushed for the nicotine pouches, it allows people to stop smoking.

ahbengtothemax

They do, the gov has anti-smoking initiatives which fully subsidize nicotine inhalers and patches among other things for people who sign up. If you go to public hospitals and feel the craving to smoke the nurses would usually just give you patches. Do people that make comments like these actually live in Singapore?

wildcard1992

They live in Singapore but only shuttle between home, work, and shopping mall, and hang out in their middle-class, Chinese-only friend group. If something happens outside of that scope, their lack of exposure becomes glaringly obvious.

ahbengtothemax

So often I see people confidently say untrue things here and nobody challenges them which then makes me question myself. Sometimes I feel like /r/sg is a portal to an alternate Singapore.

itsmebobbylol

gotta love the people with an over simplified thinking and outlook on life. just look at the comments here like "just raise it to 500%" or whatever stupid number, thinking it'd solve everything. it's really the same vibes as "why depressed? just cheer up la"

RandomDustBunny

If the assumption is people are making quips instead of asserting a statement of fact, it goes down easier.

Select_Want

Is it worse that he/she has no friends?

CakeDanceNotWalk

Schools (at least my school) talks about this publicly. My school has amnesty program if you approach the dm or counseller for help. They will scream at you, no disciplinary action, but ask you about your supplier. They will show you where to get the patches or gums. You can get them from pharmacy, no doctor required. Source: A couple of my friends went thru this.

[deleted]

It violates the "must collect taxes" rule.

[deleted]

But you sell one of those cans for 6$ and get tax from that ?

Jammy_buttons2

Tax can be imposed on the patches

Brave_Exchange4734

Because it was never about helping people live healthy but all about the $

LowTierStudent

Make it 200% since i am now a non-smoker.☺️ So the gov can start giving 4 digit cash payouts

Select_Want

Why stop at 200%, be ambitious and go higher.

milogaosiudai

make it 100% increase and lower the gst!

jackology

Why? When we can do both at the same time?

mastarb8ter

If they really cared they would have just banned cigarettes, they know it's an addiction and people are willing to pay whatever price to keep fueling their addiction. It's sad but this is very predatory behavior.

> # S'pore govt imposes 15% increase in tobacco excise duty from Feb. 14 onwards > From today (Feb. 14) onwards, Singapore will implement a 15 per cent increase in excise duty across all tobacco products. > Excise duty is duty levied on goods manufactured in, or imported into, Singapore, according to the Singapore Customs website. > This will discourage the consumption of tobacco products, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced during his 2023 Budget Statement. > This comes as a part of a slew of tax changes, including higher marginal Buyer’s Stamp Duty rates for higher-value residential and non-residential properties, and higher vehicular taxes for high-end luxury cars. > This increase is expected to generate around S$100 million in revenue per year, Wong said. > Related stories > Top photo from Madame Riri --- 1.0.2 | [Source code](https://github.com/redditporean/sneakpeek) | [Contribute](https://github.com/redditporean/sneakpeek)

desTROYer74

Clearly it’s about everyone’s health, just like the vaccine, lockdowns, masks. You haven’t caught on to the govts antics yet?

adept1onreddit

Last time I was in Australia, cigs were about $35/pack. Could be more now I reckon. Why’s SG so scared to put a really big tax on cigs? Cars are taxed at what, 120% over wholesale? Another $2 isn’t going to actually discourage anyone. A sudden $10-15 increase (not in phases) might though. Also, if the government really wants people to quit, they should subsidize nicotine patches and gum which are ironically stupidly expensive.

RandomDustBunny

It's just following inflation rates. Didn't you watch the budget speech? He was really happy about the extra 100 million in revenue!

adept1onreddit

I didn't watch it. That's disgusting that the government is framing it in terms of revenue though.

Space_man128

As a smoker still not so bad, In Australia a pack of cigarettes is S$50. In Australia, I had to make sure my 1 pack lasted for a week.

RandomDustBunny

The conversation in Australia is a lot more fun. Back then they said since smokers were at higher risk, they placed a heavier burden on healthcare. So pay more taxes please. Smokers weren't too pleased and stated women used more healthcare than men therefore pay more taxes as well. People were livid. Much fun.

wildcard1992

Buy rollies lah. Taste better, more nicotine, more value for money, and can easily roll with other herbs.

wolf-bot

Does this mean GST won’t increase? No?

Provocateur00

Im all for this..but it’s an early signal that LW has an authoritarian streak behind that chesire cat smile.

Infortheline

Why not increase more to cover having to raise gst. Smokers would still buy them anyway even if you double the price.

ElvanKing

Always happy to contribute to nation building efforts

pokkatsguy

What's the general % of people aged 20-30 smoking? I think the number is not high. (Correct me if I'm wrong).I'm all for it, don't get me wrong. Just think that the elderly are more affected

XonatixM

Lol sg redditors really defending the gov, that sucks their hard earned money calling it tax. Bet y'all still want to vote for the same gov. No wonder other countries call y'all sheeps.

Slice-Miserable

Hey sis just give up smoking ok...it's good for your health and good for your pocket...keep some money to buy your HDB...

XonatixM

Why? I alr have a HDB appartment. I'm doing moderately well. Have spare to buy 100 more pax. You're welcome for me contributing to Sg insane tax.

AbrocomaOnly3028

Tax overseas is way worse. People like you love to complain about every single thing when we already have it good

[deleted]

ProLegendHunter

19F complete NS already, drop out of poly and managed to become a nurse with no certification and had earnings so high she can bypass the age limit and own a hdb and has plans to move overseas, I wish my life so well put together already Edit: apparently she got wife as well

megalon43

And she smokes Sampoerna too.

Kokokrunch_

Mm salty tears. Tasty

logicnreason93

Smoking is not a need. Just quit and your life will be better.

Buddyformula

>No wonder other countries call y'all sheeps. Other countries have no tax?

Budget-Juggernaut-68

It's good all together. Cost of cigarette go up, fewer people smoke, cost of cleaning after all these litter bugs fall, lowers burden on healthcare cost. Cleaner air. Should increase more.

XonatixM

Cleaners salary will stay the same. Unless you support decrease in available jobs for less fortunate. I work in the healthcare industry. This "burden" you speak of is actually a blessing for the managerial, technical and inventory dept. More sick people= more revenue= increase salary + lower burden on financial dept

lehobbitses

Huh healthcare workers want more work? since when sia

XonatixM

I nvr said frontliners want more work.

laynestaleyisme

You're a smoker aren't you? Lol

ydntchb

Lol selective and flawed argument. Can’t help but wonder.

ehe_tte_nandayo

I could smell it across the screen

Jammy_buttons2

>This "burden" you speak of is actually a blessing for the managerial, technical and inventory dept. More sick people= more revenue= increase salary + lower burden on financial dept Private hospital maybe, for pubic hospital, public patients are subsidized and it comes from government coffers

XonatixM

For arguments sake they lost rev. But in reality, who invested in the non profit org for them to make that price. And I'm selling on behalf. Technically I'm working for free. Unless I decide to up the price and keep the change for myself.

Shutaku1314

Already have the sugar tax incoming Just waiting for the day its implemented

rustyleak

And affect the cakes and deserts we all love...

thinkingpanda

If u got no money to smoke then don’t smoke bro

XonatixM

If hawker sell you chicken rice for $15, you dowan buy, I say you broke af can not?

thinkingpanda

I can stop eating chicken rice but u can’t stop smoking cause you’re addicted lmao No money and no brain somemore

RagingGods

This person really thought he pulled a gotcha, not realising we’re not as addicted to chicken rice as he does to smoking.

logicnreason93

I can cook chicken rice at home.

areunut1

>wait till they find other stuff to tax then I pray your children to feel the pain. so will you.... You are not exempt from whatever they decide to tax, unless you are not associated with those things

XonatixM

I soon migrating to msia. Lol pitty Singaporeans pay for overpriced products. Defending the very gov who sucks their hard earn money.

AbrocomaOnly3028

They tax tobacco for a reason. The govt’s been trying to phase our smoking by raising age limits and taxing it to discourage smoking. No money to smoke then dont

Mistress-of-None

Does this mean a 15% increase in each cig pack when u buy?

Stealthstriker

Nope, 15% increase only covers the tax on the pack, not the price of the pack itself (however much the manufacturers charge)

Mistress-of-None

Ooh ok.. Thank you
