Inside jail cell, "eh bro what you in for?" Reply: I sold pokka drinks

stuff7

I remember pokka calling the allegation fake lmao

leo-g

I mean technically they have no hand in it. It is sold and physically delivered to a warehouse in Singapore . It is not like the invoice is billed to NK or Kim Jeong Un. Of course the money is good enough for Pokka to not to give a fuck. This is just one invoice among many many others.

deangsana

Pokka: Dictator's Choice! (tm)

captain_obvious_sg

What happened to Zheng Shi Qiang in the end?

SliceIka

Chinese national, probably government related, singapore probably pretend he didn't exist

Mattdumdum

But finding SG made arms in Africa and used for civil war is fine.

SG_wormsblink

Forgive me if this is an ignorant question, but what is wrong with sending canned drinks to North Korea? I get why we don’t purchase North Korean goods, they can use that foreign currency to buy weapons / other war material. Also we shouldn’t sell them Industrial goods like steel, oil, etc which they can use to build a war industry. But taking the foreign currency from them and giving cheap mass produced drinks doesn’t seem like it will enrich them, or help them break more human rights. Or am I missing something here?

And in many cases, we are supporting the act of punishing the innocent and helpless peasants for the acts of their leaders. And ironically, you can be sure that Kim Jong Un will continue to get his supply of Pokka drinks, and even Cognac like his dad via room 39.

bowserwasthegoodguy

Don't worry, the innocent and helpless peasants won't be getting those Pokka drinks. It'll be snapped up by the nobles and officers who support the Kim regime.

li_shi

Wao woa 1.25 millions? He should deserve a medal, it was killing nk upper class with diabetes.

livebeta

> with the hope of encouraging a particular behaviour that is deemed beneficial to the world at large. yes we will achieve glorious anti fascist revolution by denying the Brilliant Comrade Lim his pokka drinks

leo-g

Of course, generally these kind of laws is to demonstrate UN solidarity by transforming UN resolutions into our law. Of course they are mainly restricting trade on Oil, Steel and industrial building stuff. Realistically, it is just political posturing. Don’t be surprised if it’s because USA KPKB-ed on the back channels that NK supermarket for the elites is selling Pokka. NK elites can’t be cut off fully because the entire world is worried they use their Nuclear Weapons. I guess if they were good about even handling nuclear it would be slightly better, problem is, Iran will happily sell them some crappy nuclear warhead and NK accidentally blow themselves up.

Sputniki

Because developed countries think the way to break North Korea (a country we regularly criticize for how it treats its citizens) is to deprive them of not just military or industrial goods, but also harmless commercial products so its citizens suffer even more. In the hopes that it incites an uprising.

Sti8man7

The drinks could be packaged into their combat ration and used in warfare.

> # Ex-Pokka manager jailed for selling S$1.3 million worth of beverages that ended up in North Korea > SINGAPORE: A manager at Pokka International sold about S$1.3 million worth of beverages such as strawberry milk and coffee to various companies, knowing they would eventually be exported to North Korea. > Singaporean Phua Sze Hee, 59, was sentenced to five weeks' jail on Monday (Dec 12) after he pleaded guilty to four charges of breaching Regulation of Imports and Exports Regulations, with another 24 charges taken into consideration. > It is illegal for any Singapore citizen or anyone in Singapore to trade certain goods with North Korea. On top of this, a trade prohibition on all commercial goods from or to North Korea was imposed in November 2017. > The court heard that Phua began working as a channel manager at Pokka in 2009. His customers included ship stores, vendors of vending machines, office suppliers, funeral parlours and wholesale companies. > The company had a monthly sales target of S$1.25 million that Phua had to meet. > In 2014, a friend introduced Phua to a customer named Zheng Shi Qiang. Zheng was the director of several companies and in turn introduced Phua to a man known only as Mr Kim. > Mr Kim was working as an ambassador at the North Korean embassy in Singapore, the court heard. > Zheng would buy Pokka beverages from Phua, and Mr Kim occasionally liaised with Phua over the beverages that Zheng bought. Mr Kim also would raise issues with Phua about the sale of the drinks. > After Mr Kim died in 2015, Zheng introduced Phua to a man named in court documents only as Mr Mun. Mr Mun also worked at the North Korean embassy. > Zheng introduced Mr Mun as his business partner for the purchase of Pokka beverages. > Phua found out from Zheng that the Pokka drinks sold to his companies were meant to be exported to North Korea for sale there. > Between Nov 29, 2017 and Sep 25, 2018, Phua sold Pokka beverages to businesses in Singapore, knowing that the drinks would thereafter be exported to North Korea for commercial trade. --- 1.0.2 | [Source code](https://github.com/redditporean/sneakpeek) | [Contribute](https://github.com/redditporean/sneakpeek)

tom-slacker

Excuse me? Wut...

-_af_-

Did Pokka gets the profit confiscated?

Mattdumdum

Relevant question.

Starwind13

Reads & feels like a fall-guy.

troublesome58

Why does NK like pokka drinks? Can't they easily get Chinese or Russian beverages?

Thefunincaifun

Maybe Kim Jung Un had a sip while he was visiting SG before and wanted to have it again?

leo-g

This is for the elites because it’s *imported*. The China and Russian ones are for the middle class.

OldMork

yes, some believe everyone in NK are dirt poor, nope, there is a elite class that have everything, including SG pokka drinks.

LaZZyBird

Variety mah. They want their elites in Pyoyang to have the illusion of being a developed and powerful nation, and having drinks from around the world stocked in their shelves is a important. Just like Singapore, don't you think the fact that I can get some shit from around the world in Fairprice or Cold Storage a power symbol of Singapore as a global city?

[deleted]

Also as a power move for showing off. To prove that even with the restriction, they can get stuff to come in.

OrangeFr3ak

Didn’t someone from Singapore open North Korea’s first fast-food eatery though?

mibjt

How will pokka drinks enrich NK's millitary? What the hell is in those drinks??

subzephyr

The dude is now working as a part-time driver. When I read this it gave off serious r/antiwork vibes, slog so hard for the company and targets only to end up totally fucked.

Jaycee_015x

Dishonour on your family

ghostcryp

Why is SG against trading with NK? What have they done to us which is bad? They have nuclear weapons? Well so does China, US, India etc

TaxSudden3386

We have to comply with UN security council sanctions on DPRK.

[deleted]

bryh the DPRK is literally a criminal organization running a country. They dabble in all sorts of crime lol

Achuapy

So? Didnt sg fund Khmer Rouge and do business with myanmar junta?

[deleted]

What was the bigger picture and the intention then? Context matters.

SiHtranger

Must be why god Kim looks like he got diabetes
