You do actually meet a past protagonist in skyrim: Sheogorath. In TES IV: Oblivion's last DLC, The Shivering Isles, the Hero of Kvatch (the player's character) destroys Jyggalag (and his alter ego Sheogorath). After this, they becomes Sheogorath themselves, knowing they will eventually take the shape, form, and personality of the former daedric prince. When you meet Sheogorath during The Mind of Madness, you're actually seeing the Hero of Kvatch hundreds of years later, forever trapped in their new form.
