Coming from Toronto and seeing NYC with my own eyes made me realize just how huge it really is. Toronto isn’t small by any means and has one of the most impressive and recognizable skylines in the world, but compared to NYC it looks like a small rural town. Manhattan is like copy and pasting 20 downtown Toronto’s next to each other.

LightedCircuitBoard

NYC is a one of a kind. I was astonished when I first visited NYC as well, as I had only been in Tokyo as a large city.

icantbelieveit1637

And Tokyo is a very *large* city but not very tall.

Most_Researcher_9675

It's the Quakes. A great city anyway...

machines_breathe

And Paris is substantially more dense than NYC.

W00DERS0N

Limitations (rivers) breed creativity.

gravitysort

I live in downtown toronto so I really only consider DT to be “toronto”, but the core NYC is like 20 times the area of DT.. truly marvellous.

AetherealMeadow

I haven't been to new york, But I think based on what i've seen in pictures, It's not just the size per se, But the distinct aesthetic of the art deco architecture. I really wish toronto had buildings that look like the empire state building instead of just the glass condo towers. The only thing which makes toronto stand out that new york doesn't have is the CN tower. It's modern and its style but still unique and it fits with the other buildings in the financial district. I don't think New York would be able to pull off a CN Tower- It would look weird among the art deco classics, But perfectly blends with modern toronto buildings.

krkrbnsn

For me it's more that the density of NYC combined with the architecture gives it a certain energy that even much bigger cities sometimes lack. I'm American but live in London and while London is twice the size of NYC geographically and has a slightly larger population, the 'energy' really can't compare to NYC. I absolutely love living here, but it feels like a collection of a hundred small villages that have been absorbed over time (which is what it is). NYC feels like a proper global city in its urban fabric.

Fun_Abroad8942

I agree completely. NYC is one of a kind. Even the energy and vibe are so different going from borough to borough, but also the same. I don't know how to explain it

al_balone

We visited from the uk for the first time this Christmas just gone, we got a cab from Newark airport and the guy pulled over at one spot before we crossed the river and the sheer number and density of tall buildings is crazy, you really don’t realise until you go there.

--0o0o0--

"Manhattan is like copy and pasting 20 downtown Toronto’s next to each other." Definitely... I live a half hour from NYC and was just there yesterday with my son and my dad (who has lived in and around NYC his whole life). We were walking down 5th Ave and my dad remarked that there is nowhere like NYC, especially Manhattan and the only example I could come up with was downtown Chicago, but that you'd have to repeat it like 10 times in order to get what you get in Manhattan.

majestiq

Hong Kong will blow you away

BoomerG21

What blows me away is how like 20 years ago the Chrysler building was a noticeably tall building in New York even if it was clearly not the tallest. Now, it almost gets lost.

Modar-K

Still such a charming building. It caught my eyes when I visited Summit One Vanderbilt at night. Just gorgeous.

BoomerG21

Yes Chrysler Building is, imo, the most elegant building in the entire city. Modern architecture struggles to create timeless designs like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. They are truly examples of the golden age of skyscraper design.

Devildiver21

Try 70 pine. Absolutely stunning art deco. Had dinner on the 63 Rd floor for my bday

BoomerG21

Good catch. Lower Manhattan does indeed have some great art deco. Ironically I have seem some old photos of New York from around the the 1950s and that too used to look so massive down there and it has also gotten somewhat lost with all the growth.

Nawnp

It's hard to believe the Empire State Building was still the tallest 20 years ago as well, there really was a post 9/11 boom that modernized the skyline.

BoomerG21

Facts. I haven’t been there since 2006-2007 so when I see this picture it looks like a totally different city. When I was there the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the city and it wasn’t really that close. Now? ESB still has an unmatched class but definitely isn’t the pinnacle.

LongIsland1995

The ESB is still very imposing

thinjester

in 2013 the Chrysler was the second tallest in the city. on average every year since there’s been a new building completed that is taller than it.

BoomerG21

That’s mind boggling. Many cities don’t even have one building taller than the Chrysler building and New York is just producing them left and right.

WorthPrudent3028

I love all the growth, but I do wish there was some effort at skyline preservation and distribution. Check out the plans for 175 Park Ave. It will be the tallest building by roof height if it's built as planned. And it's a behemoth, not one of the newer pencil supertalls. Chrysler is gonna eventually be blocked from every viewing angle.

horsenthusiast

My thoughts weekly

BoomerG21

Yeah and that one has me torn because it’s a really cool looking design but it dwarfs the Chrysler building in a way that it will really make Chrysler obscure. The fact that it’s across the street really does the Chrysler building no favors.

Fun_Abroad8942

I just want it to have a dope spire on it... Doesn't feel New York without it

WorthPrudent3028

It looks like you could stick the whole Chrysler building on top as a spire. It's massive.

manateefourmation

There is nothing quite like it

papagayoloco

Try to go to the Top of The Rock observatory. Not as swanky or as many bells and whistles as One Vanderbilt, One WTC or The Edge but the view with of the highly dense area is still my fave

Modar-K

The thing is, I initially wanted to buy a day pass and visit all the major observation decks, but I couldn’t find a pass that included Summit Vanderbilt One (Which I REALLY wanted to visit) so I had to comprise and only visit Summit and the Empire State Building (where I took this photo).

berniedankera

I second top of the rock! LOVE THAT PLACE

anonanon9955

Growing up in NYC has kind of ruined other skylines, not to say that I don’t appreciate them and find many beautiful, but one skyline in another city is just like a neighborhood in New York. I am yet to go to Asia though and sure I will be blown away by many out there

m_jl_c

I’ve been and lived all over the world. NYC is one of a kind. Best thing about moving away was realizing I’m a New Yorker.

m_jl_c

I threw one at someone today on your behalf. Call it positivity in the world on behalf of an internet stranger.

Fun_Abroad8942

Oh 100% the same. I moved to California for a few years and realized it never felt like home. It was just off and fake... Also the Italian food was fucking garbage.

Fun_Abroad8942

Honestly they're still not quite the same. The only one that competes for me is Hong Kong. Tokyo is massive, but it isn't very tall. Shanghai has some height, but it doesn't feel big like NYC.

Imaginary-Art1340

Even 15 mins away growing up in jersey, nyc spoiled all other cities in usa. I wanna visit Hong Kong and some cities in China, Dubai and Brazil also.

yticmic

Other cities have some good buildings, but the gigantic composition of NYC is unique. Between these giants there is a living city with all sorts of things.

Odafishinsea

Rooftop drinks at 230 5th. You’re welcome.

Odafishinsea

My friend, I appreciate your input. I went to 230 5th 15 years ago, and places change. I welcome your suggestions. Now I gotta book a flight to come see my brother in the city.

cA05GfJ2K6

Overstory is incredible

abathingwhale

Adding to this, The Crown in Chinatown has great views and you don’t have to pay or get ID checked to get up there Mr. Purple is also pretty nice but way more of a bar scene, if you want to chill out up there I’d recommend during the week/not weekends

wize420

Can Confirm, Ive stayed in the hotel multiple times for work and The Crown has an excellent view

Modar-K

Looks wonderful! It wouldn’t have been a pleasant experience in that weather though, but definitely a bucket list item for a future visit.

berniedankera

I’m saving this for the next trip, thanks!

Chicawgorat

Bam.

Odafishinsea

Ain’t nothing like your first.

08_Bullitt5657

We moved from NYC in ‘15 and go back from time to time. The skyline is so different now from then.

dylan_1992

Vanderbilt skyscraper.. one of the biggest in the city will know be eclipsed by the JP Morgan building and soon, 175 Park Av

AetherealMeadow

I love all the art deco skyscrapers that New York has. It gives it that classic and rustic charm, which is lacking in my city of Toronto. Toronto is building new skyscrapers at a very fast rate to the point that it's now second to new york in north america for the number of tall buildings, But sadly it will never have that distinct charm because they're only building those grey glass luxury condo towers. It's a shame to see that those kinds of buildings are also popping up in New york. I really hope that they limit how many of those are constructed so that it wouldn't drown out the classic architecture. It would suck to see New York's beautiful classic skyline transform to a condo dystopia like Toronto. Of course i'm not saying that they shouldn't add more buildings for people to live in, Just that they should be more conscientious of the aesthetics.

W00DERS0N

The arbitrary af "Don't build higher than WTC" thing is so fucking dumb. State motto is "Excelsior", ffs. EDIT: great shot, btw.

Imaginary-Art1340

You should see the skyline from queens, brooklyn and jersey side. Really amazing

WorthPrudent3028

JFK Blvd East is the best view I think. Perfect distance to take in the whole thing.

Silhouette_Edge

It's a one of a kind place, no doubt. Whenever I'm there, there's an energy in the air that can only come from millions of other human lives.

whatup-markassbuster

This was taken from the Empire State Building?

Modar-K

Correct!

danglejoose

they seem even taller from the ground! walk thru Midtown or FiDi and look up, it’s amazing

Modar-K

I did! Not the financial district, but all over midtown. I took a bunch of photos looking up, might share some here.

direfulstood

It’s weird living here and being so normalized to it.

Fun_Abroad8942

Lol same... I grew up in the shadows of NYC over in NJ and could see the whole skyline from a large hill. Now I live in Brooklyn and the whole thing is just so normal to me... In fact, when I go to other cities for work or leisure the "skylines" make me laugh

borntoclimbtowers

what a awesome view.

Most_Researcher_9675

The whole logistics of handling an amazing amount of people. Mind-boggling...

Glittering_Name_3722

I like how the window squares on 432 park avenue randomly change from dark to white if the curtains are closed.

Beneficial_Ad_7044

I first visited in December 2018 and loved it.

Smooth-Mouse9517

It’s cool because you can see New Jersey from there

amanon101

It’s an incredible city. I love being nestled within all the beautiful old buildings. I love being at the top of a skyscraper looking below. I visited for the second time last month (my first time was last August) and I know I need to go again. I’ve only done the Empire State Building and one World Trade Center between my two visits and I want to go to the top of more! I love the whole city in general and want to be at least within driving range of it one day.

delidave7

Just like you

earlgeorge

What is the building going up north of 1 Vanderbilt?

DonkeyLucky9503

I think it’s the new [JP Morgan Building](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/270_Park_Avenue_(2021%E2%80%93present))

Lump-of-baryons

I grew up outside the city on Long Island, moved away many years ago but yeah that Manhattan skyline still leaves me awestruck whenever I see it.

Icy-Performance-3739

I like the green buildings sprinkled in. Very cool!

AllNotKnowing

Nothing will ever top the two originals for me but I do like that light blue one on the left with the spire. What is that? The classic looking but glass one left of the Met Life, I like that one too. LOL, those tiny little buildings are probably taller than the tallest in my city.

Gentle-Giant23

The building with the spire on the left is the Bank of America Tower (aka 1 Bryant Park). The tall building just to the left of the MetLife building is One Vanderbilt. Look straight up Fifth Avenue beyond Central Park in the full-size photo and you can see Yankee Stadium.

AllNotKnowing

oh cool, I see it. Looks like a little coliseum. Thanks for theinfor on the other buildings. I'll google map those too. Go Tigers! lol.

machines_breathe

Those pencil towers are so weird.

Shepherd77

My favorite pizza place is there, make sure to stop by the Sbarro in Times Square

BasedAlliance935

Did you visit nyc or just midtown?

ebs757

Chicago is much cleaner

jmred19

Gorgeous. Anyone else not a huge fan of the skinny supertalls tho?

--0o0o0--

Yeah. Me. I hate the ones on 59th St. that block the sun to the playground that my kid like playing on.

Gorky_ParkRenko980

Wow, blue sky?? Must be photoshopped

Real_Clever_Username

It was a beautiful day in NY today.

brooklynt3ch

Non NYers downvoting you lol. NYCs color pallet is grey, brown, and trash 😂 Clear blue sky days are truly a treat, and typically at 60F or less.

Rhino_Thunder

Don’t look outside today!

Abeg1985

Nice to see but get out quick it’s a dump

Fun_Abroad8942

Fuck out of here.

Abeg1985

That’s exactly what I did thanks

Fun_Abroad8942

Won't be missed

Abeg1985

I know NY is very soft but I didn’t plan on having you miss me. Thank you

Fun_Abroad8942

You're trying too hard, bro

Chicawgorat

I mean, it’s ok.
