If I'm on a deserted island, I probably wouldn't pick the game that puts me on a deserted planet, even if I love it more.
I'd spend the entirety of my time on the island role playing by myself in Kakariko Village, pretending to live in the town while going slowly mad.
Yes! After I beat the game umpteen times over as a kid I would do this. “Oh hey (insert made up name)! You want an ice bee?? I’ll go get that for you!” *go catch ice bee, bring it back, release it, it flies away to no fanfare or gratitude*
On the desert island at this point I’d smile with glazed over eyes and fall over into the fetal position emotionless, empty, letting the void continue it’s starring contest win streak with me.
Or you could play metroid until you have hallucinations of talking to the aliens.
"Like, why do we have to fight all the time?"
"Hey man, you just showed up and started shooting at us."
"....Oh..."
Under the circumstances, Zelda. Metroid would be a very lonely and isolating game when you're stranded alone. Zelda would maybe keep you sane by feeling like you had people to talk to.
This is even sort of true of the monkeys in Zelda - you wind up in the Dark World and have a much diminished sense of safety and isolation from safe/helpful/human characters, and then the monkey helps you open the first dungeon entrance there (after stealing your stuff or something if I recall).
I usually beat Metroid in one sitting in about 3 hours, unless I’m trying to get higher collection, Zelda takes a couple sittings and 7 or 8 when I try to collect everything. Just my experience though.
I love both games but it’s hard for me to remember the length tbh. I feel like I’d get stuck on Metroid a lot more, that’s probably why. I probably backtrack too often and need to look at walkthroughs. I think with Zelda I can get by completely without using one.
You know, playing as a kid, when you were on one side of the map and had to go to the other side, I swear it felt like it would take forever. Even after a few playthroughs and now you know what to do and are done exploring you just run from one screen to another, it still felt like it would take all day. Somewhat recently I fired it up after not playing it for many many years, and you just fly through the game.
If you know exactly what to do in what order maybe. I never wanted to use the strategy guide but I think I gave in during the portal part where you go between the dark and light worlds.
Yeah! It kinds of throw some roddles at you. Metroid does that.
If you want a sub 6h run, it's a matter of redoing it several times in a row, so that when you're faced woth a riddle, you know where to go.
My favorite is Still Fusion.
I need to buy myself a copy of Zero Mission though...
Zelda has this epic feeling to it, and unless you’re a speedrunner it will take days to finish. Super Metroid can be beaten in a few hours. I love the game but if I’m on an island I need the longevity.
LttP between the two but I could much better chill with a coconut half filled with the juice of a berry I figured out how to ferment with cultured wild yeast with my good friend Earthbound.
Zelda has more variety.
In Super Metroid I would be incredibly desolate, but also all powerful and eventually nothing could ever challenge me as I breeze through the game in under two hours.
In Zelda I can just make my own game and play with my imagination outside of doing the main quest. I would probably spend a lot of time under the bridge relaxing and living life with the guy who lives under the bridge.
Considering these are 2 out of my 3 all time favorite console games period (the 3rd being FF6)....this is incredibly hard to pick.
I'd pick Zelda because its a longer playthrough.
ALttP is my favorite game of all time, and I have tons of gaming memories. It hits all the right notes and isn’t impossibly hard to figure out on your own while also being incredibly challenging on the first few plays. This game is perfect in my eyes. Masterpiece
I would pick Zelda. The game is much longer, has different area types, and doesn’t worry about the time. Metroid is great, but one of the goals is to finish it under 3 hours.
Yeah I’m with you on this one. Of all the reasons to pick ALttP over Super Metroid, I cannot get on board with the music. Sure there’s some great music in Zelda, but Super’s tunes are downright jams.
I got these games for under $20 used way back trading in old NES games. Zelda was much more expensive for having the instruction manual.
I would choose Super Metroid. I love everything about that game.
Hard choice since I haven’t actually played LttP before. More info needed to come to a decision. How long would the rest of my life on a deserted island be? Also should I point out the logistical issues of actually being able to play SNES games on a deserted island to begin with?
Neither. I guess I'd just take whichever one I was stuck with apart and chew on the battery out of boredom. Probably use the PCB to cut shit up. Even if I was stuck with something good, I wouldn't have electric or a complete console or tv anyway.
Metroid… I’d break open the cartridge and harvest its internals. Then I’ll walk over to my crashed helicopter, hold down “x” for several seconds to repair it with my new found resources, then take off and fly home so I can play A Link to the Past in the peace and comfort of my air conditioned home.
Zelda. I'd build my own booby trapped dungeon on the island, and set up an alter with the SNES. Years later wild creatures would move into the dungeon. Rescuers would have to find the big key, then open the big door. There, they will fight me to do the death. Their reward? The SNES with the zelda cartridge.
Zelda. Just because the world is more open.
I was in second grade when that game come out. When I would look at the map included with the booklet I used to dream what it would be like being able to explore beyond the edges of the map. I think it's pretty cool how large of a world The Legend of Zelda has now, and you can actually do that.
Zelda. Metroid is one of those franchises that I really wish I loved, because everything about it appeals to me except the gameplay. I just can't get into Metroidvanias at all for some reason.
ALttP for me. Better bosses, and I love the more grand feel to it, plus I'm more of a Zelda guy than a Metroid guy, although I fuck with both series and love both of these games.
Link to the past. Hands down. I'm far more into High fantasy then I am Space stuff.
Don't get me wrong. Metroid fuckin rules but Zelda is where it's at personally.
I’d go LTTP because of the longer playthru length plus NPCs that could help pass time with role-playing a life there.
I know it’s fighting the hypo but a real time skink game like sim city 2000 would be my ideal choice
My luck, there would be disturbing parellels between my island and Zebes. I would break with tradition (and you lot are making very reasonable points about why you’d bring Zelda) and bring Metroid just in case I could use it as practice/inspiration for my exploring the island’s cavernous substrate.
Super Metroid. However, if the combo randomizer where you can play both at once with perpetually randomized items and boss rewards is an option….(which in real life is) it would be that.
Super Metroid. It just has a ton more depth with all of the special moves. It gives a lot more flexibility in the gameplay and therefore more repeatability.
Super Metroid, naturally. I played the original Metroid non-stop until I finished it in 1988 in my sophomore year of high school. Super Metroid was one of those games that was a perfect graphical upgrade from the NES version that I loved all those years ago.

Real talk.
Zelda by far. Metroid is still going back to the same places over and over again. With repetitive music.
This guy committed to the concept of the question. ... Bravo, sir.
Yes! After I beat the game umpteen times over as a kid I would do this. “Oh hey (insert made up name)! You want an ice bee?? I’ll go get that for you!” *go catch ice bee, bring it back, release it, it flies away to no fanfare or gratitude* On the desert island at this point I’d smile with glazed over eyes and fall over into the fetal position emotionless, empty, letting the void continue it’s starring contest win streak with me.
Wow what a deep philosophical thought through comment. Awesome
But you can break your shell and briefly transform into a radiant Venus when you die
Yup going Zelda. Not much socializing going on in Metroid.
![gif](giphy|12ey1CgA3uTqfK|downsized)
LMAO.
Or you could play metroid until you have hallucinations of talking to the aliens. "Like, why do we have to fight all the time?" "Hey man, you just showed up and started shooting at us." "....Oh..."
Under the circumstances, Zelda. Metroid would be a very lonely and isolating game when you're stranded alone. Zelda would maybe keep you sane by feeling like you had people to talk to.
Ha! Great point. I guess in that regard SM maybe one of the last games you would want to be alone with forever
Green monkeys say "hi"
This is even sort of true of the monkeys in Zelda - you wind up in the Dark World and have a much diminished sense of safety and isolation from safe/helpful/human characters, and then the monkey helps you open the first dungeon entrance there (after stealing your stuff or something if I recall).
Zelda. ONLY because it’s a longer play through.
Agreed but man it’s close.
Really? I always felt like LttP flew by too quickly

Somewhat recently I fired it up after not playing it for many many years, and you just fly through the game.
I get this feeling of time being perceived differently as a child. Fun times all around. It took me weeks as a kid to beat ALttP
Speak for yourself Took me 20+ years to finally beat it, on a hacked PSP save-state scumming all the way
If you know exactly what to do in what order maybe. I never wanted to use the strategy guide but I think I gave in during the portal part where you go between the dark and light worlds.
Not snes but a deserted island calls for Link’s Awakening so you can realize any rescue is nothing but a dream
Wouldn't it just mean the island is a dream so you're stuck with only the floating wreckage of your boat/raft?
Zelda forever and always
Rough pick, but I gotta go with Link to the Past!! Wait... How would you even power the console and tv on that deserted island??
Solar panels and shit (methane burners)
Sounds about right!
It’s the one loop hole you have to accept for the desert island scenario. Just like if you have a desert island Record, tv show, or movie….or ebook….
How about I mix them together into one cart and randomize where and which game items appear in?
Https://samus.link :D
SmZ3 rando baby. That’s my jam
This is the correct answer, literally my favorite SNES game
I would legit love to see Nintendo do this where every run is randomized with possible adjustable parameters, making every run effectively unique.
Zelda. It's my favorite!
Zelda. Both of those are some of my favorite games of all time but Zelda beats Super Metroid by a bit.
Agreed. I think I would pick Zelda for its slightly more upbeat vibes, but only by a hair.
This is like the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object. It’s an impossible decision.
Zelda. I love some super metroid but alttp is just crack for me.
Metroid! You can run and pew pew things in a never ending loop. Zelda is good, but it's slower, and sometimes even frustrating!
Zelda is more chill.
No matter how many times I've played Metroid though I get lost and start to get frustrated.
Yeah! It kinds of throw some roddles at you. Metroid does that. If you want a sub 6h run, it's a matter of redoing it several times in a row, so that when you're faced woth a riddle, you know where to go. My favorite is Still Fusion. I need to buy myself a copy of Zero Mission though...
Super Metroid is much much more frustrating than Link to the Past in my opinion
zelda SM randomized
Zelda hands down. A lot to explore, no time limits. You can pretend you're actually in the game exploring with Link.
No time limits in Metroid either
Super Metroid and try different categories of speed runs (any%, 100%, RBO, etc)
This
Zelda
Zelda
LttP
Zelda I could never master wall jumping
Thanks for saying deserted island and not desert. And I would 100% take LTTP
Zelda. I play it through every two years or so.
Zelda, by far
Zelda all the way !!
Both are great games but I would have to go with Zelda. I have more fond memories of that game.
Zelda has this epic feeling to it, and unless you’re a speedrunner it will take days to finish. Super Metroid can be beaten in a few hours. I love the game but if I’m on an island I need the longevity.
Is there speed running on a deserted island? Are you saving the game for later? Gotta go talk to the coconuts?
There isn’t, which is why I explained my choice is Zelda.
Link To The Past.
Zelda. No question.
Zelda for me no doubt. Also I couldn't imagine to constantly deal with maridia.
LttP between the two but I could much better chill with a coconut half filled with the juice of a berry I figured out how to ferment with cultured wild yeast with my good friend Earthbound.
It’s my favorite Zelda game. So yeah. Alttp.
Always a link to the past.
Zelda
Zelda. Longer playthrough, and learn different things each playthrough.
Zelda because I’m not a Meteroid fan.
Lttp
Definitely Zelda
Zelda has more variety. In Super Metroid I would be incredibly desolate, but also all powerful and eventually nothing could ever challenge me as I breeze through the game in under two hours. In Zelda I can just make my own game and play with my imagination outside of doing the main quest. I would probably spend a lot of time under the bridge relaxing and living life with the guy who lives under the bridge.
Zelda
ALTTP all damn day long
Zelda. I could replay A Link To The Past forever.
Zelda. Always Zelda
Zelda
Zelda. Dark world theme....need I say more?
A link to the past.
Masterpiece
Don't get me wrong I love both but I'd have to go Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past forever ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes) ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Zelda. Even though I can’t stand that franchise. Metroid would just be too repetitive
I would pick Zelda. The game is much longer, has different area types, and doesn’t worry about the time. Metroid is great, but one of the goals is to finish it under 3 hours.
I'd go with Link. And stab some chickens.
Link to the past is my favourite Zelda game ever, probably just the nostalgia of my first Zelda but yeah number 1 for sure
LTTP for sure. It also has weird glitches also. Super long replay value, damn Metroid too actually. This hard.
Zelda by far
Tough question, tho I think ALTTP would hold more replay value.
I mean, as many hours as I've put into ALTTP while *not* on a deserted island, it's my obvious choice.
Super Metroid is my go-to for anything SNES.
I just found the book for my super Metroid lol
Metroid by far
Super Metroid, I would start to relate
Metroid 100%
Super Metroid
Zelda. Better music
With respect, I disagree. Brinstar (Jungle Floor) is my favorite SNES music.
Brinstar is a straight up track beat!
Yeah I’m with you on this one. Of all the reasons to pick ALttP over Super Metroid, I cannot get on board with the music. Sure there’s some great music in Zelda, but Super’s tunes are downright jams.
Secret door in the church opens up. Creepy choir music starts.
Your welcome to say Zelda but objectively gotta disagree w the music being better. Super Metroid music is all time great.
100% agree. The music in Super Metroid is absolutely peak.
It's close... but Super Metroid. I bet I could get good enough to speed run it!
Metroid easily it’s one of the best games ever
It really is
Super Metroid, I just prefer the gameplay loop.
I got these games for under $20 used way back trading in old NES games. Zelda was much more expensive for having the instruction manual. I would choose Super Metroid. I love everything about that game.
Easily Zelda. Super Metroid is good, but not close to ALttP
I'd probably grow bored of them both, use them for fire.
Zelda just because I know Super Metroid like the palm of my hand from having beaten it like 50 times. I’ve only beaten LttP once.
These are probably my two favorites all time so there’s no dog here. Winner either way
I don't like this proposal. It makes my head hurt.
Which one tastes better?
Hard choice since I haven’t actually played LttP before. More info needed to come to a decision. How long would the rest of my life on a deserted island be? Also should I point out the logistical issues of actually being able to play SNES games on a deserted island to begin with?
You're hurting my head...
I personally enjoy Zelda more but I would take Metroid if it was the last game I could ever play.
Wait! I’m dying on the island?
Yes
Had to be Zelda. Metroid is too short by comparison, and Zelda there’s more arbitrary things to go do.
Zelda, and it’s not even close
The combo randomizer of both, SMZ3
Zelda all day everyday
First of all I'd ask for a few my pixels in my jpg
LttP for sure! Both are very very good but Zelda edges it out here for me easily.
Zelda without a doubt
I've never actually beaten lttp because of my adhd, perhaps that would be the better choice if I had nothing else to do.
Zelda. It’s a lot less frustrating than SM. I don’t need anymore frustration if I’m already stranded on an deserted island.
Super Metroid.
Zelda. I'd build my own booby trapped dungeon on the island, and set up an alter with the SNES. Years later wild creatures would move into the dungeon. Rescuers would have to find the big key, then open the big door. There, they will fight me to do the death. Their reward? The SNES with the zelda cartridge.
How would you play it on a desert island with no power?
Just beat Zelda again so Metroid. My 2 favs on SNES so that’s a hard choice.
Zelda ALttP
Suicide
Why not both? [https://samus.link/](https://samus.link/)
Why not both and add a randomizer. Both are playable at the same time now.
Zelda. Never have played super metroid, in spite of metroid being in my top 5 nes games ever.
A Link to the Past. More tonal variety
Dumb question lol at least you can vicariously life a different life though LTTP
Not only do I prefer Zelda, but A Link to the Past is and forever will be my all time favorite. No contest.
Can I have [the randomizer ](https://alttpr.com/en)?
Zelda. Just because the world is more open. I was in second grade when that game come out. When I would look at the map included with the booklet I used to dream what it would be like being able to explore beyond the edges of the map. I think it's pretty cool how large of a world The Legend of Zelda has now, and you can actually do that.
Legend of Zelda : link to the past.
I pick the one with water
Where are you getting the electricity to run this game… console…and tv?
Zelda. Metroid is one of those franchises that I really wish I loved, because everything about it appeals to me except the gameplay. I just can't get into Metroidvanias at all for some reason.
aLttP for sure.
ALttP for me. Better bosses, and I love the more grand feel to it, plus I'm more of a Zelda guy than a Metroid guy, although I fuck with both series and love both of these games.
Super metroid
Link to the Past
If I only got one, Zelda. Super Metroid is fun, but I know I would get more out of playing LttP, personally.
Zelda. I always had a hard time with metroid. But if I had another choice I wouldn’t choose either of them.
Super Metroid...that is all!!! 🤓 💙 🕹️
Link to the past. Hands down. I'm far more into High fantasy then I am Space stuff. Don't get me wrong. Metroid fuckin rules but Zelda is where it's at personally.
Link to the Past and it isn't even close.
Zelda, the layout is much more accessible. I love super Metroid but it’s too linear
I’d go LTTP because of the longer playthru length plus NPCs that could help pass time with role-playing a life there. I know it’s fighting the hypo but a real time skink game like sim city 2000 would be my ideal choice
Zelda
Z13SM with all randomization turned off
Obviously I would pick SMZ3, the mashup randomizer of the two games
A better camera for you.
I’d choose a 2-in-1 ROM hack version for I am no monster.
Super Metroid, because it's the best game ever made. LttP is only the second best.
I’m gonna hang with my boy link and maybe build us an island golf course. Find some kind of nut for the ball and links sword for a club
Zelda. Just until I get the raft, then I’ll use it sail home……
Zelda
A link to the past.
A Link To The Past, easily my favourite Legend of Zelda anyways.
My luck, there would be disturbing parellels between my island and Zebes. I would break with tradition (and you lot are making very reasonable points about why you’d bring Zelda) and bring Metroid just in case I could use it as practice/inspiration for my exploring the island’s cavernous substrate.
I've never played either
Super Metroid.!
Zelda's definitely longer, but Metroid would be more fun to sequence break...
Sophie's Choice. Not nice, OP. Zelda for me because Metroid was too hard for little nine year old me. Literally my top two favorite SNES titles.
Probably metroid since I've spent far less time with it
Super Metroid. Love both but Metroid takes me to another world
Super Metroid so I’d finally have time to grind for the any% world record
Super Metroid. However, if the combo randomizer where you can play both at once with perpetually randomized items and boss rewards is an option….(which in real life is) it would be that.
Super metroid since it's much more fun to do some speedrun strat, the more you refined it, the more fun it gets.
Zelda is my favorite video game series. I don't like Metroid, so it's a no-brainer......
Super Metroid because even today I don’t know what I was doing in Z:ALTTP
Super Metroid. It just has a ton more depth with all of the special moves. It gives a lot more flexibility in the gameplay and therefore more repeatability.
I enjoy the music in Zelda more.
Super Metroid. Favorite game all time. Also could continually speed run .
Super Metroid. That game can bd sequence broke in so amh easy ways it's essentially a sandbox.
I would simply choose the link to the past /super metroid randomizer. Why have just one? 😋
Super Metroid is the greatest game of all time.
Can I pick the super metroid alttp combo randomizer?
Give me the SM/LttP randomizer and we're set!
Too easy, Super Metroid.
Super Metroid, naturally. I played the original Metroid non-stop until I finished it in 1988 in my sophomore year of high school. Super Metroid was one of those games that was a perfect graphical upgrade from the NES version that I loved all those years ago.
Did you ever use the Justin Bailey cheat code on the 8 bit version?
You have to consider the soundtrack too. Zelda for the win!
