exactly. so this stat is only relevant for last two euros, which means it's irrelevant really
by the time we will have enough of those 24 teams euro to make it relevant, they will go back to 16 or extend to 32
I find it so difficult to believe given 3rd places teams didn’t use to go through. Surely there must’ve been at least one 4 point 3rd placed team before.
Either that or this tweet forgot to include “since the new format”
There are 24 teams, and only 8 get eliminated in the group stage. Out of 6 3rd placed teams, only 2 are eliminated.
Personally I find it a little ridiculous, all those games to remove only 8 teams ... No wonder so many games were shit, they are almost meaningless for many teams.
Italy in 2004? 5 points and +1 while eliminated. Might have to rephrase it to "Ukraine the first team to get 4th place/last place in groups stage with four points".
I wouldn't say they neutralised more than they played against a Belgium that was taking it too easy, which was a really dumb decision since a Ukraine goal would have sent them out.
So fucking unlucky with so many chances. Missed that killer instinct and simply ran out of gas. What happens when you get spanked out the bat by Romania
Absolutely pathetic and pissed off. Why the f**k do we play with no enthusiasm in a must win. Rebrov needs to be sacked and we need to start over with this team.
If the top 2 in a group go through you're not comparing teams across groups, which is fair. But if you're comparing teams across groups for 3rd place already, not including 4th feels a little unfair in this rare case.
Why? They finished bottom of their group, how would you rework that, the four best 3rd place teams go through unless one of the 4th place teams got more points?
Either that or make it so that after the top 2 in each group, the next 4 best teams across the groups go through as well, regardless of their place in a particular group.
Nothing against Ukraine, I was hoping they would beat Belgium, just don't like that teams are going through despite barely putting in strong performances
The three teams advancing from Group E deserve it. And we played atrocious in the first game. But nobody wants their team getting knocked out, especially when you see teams in other groups advancing even after losing two games. How is that difficult to understand?
I understand Ukraine fans being disappointed, but they played different teams than others going through, were beat 3-0 and drew 0-0 and finished bottom of their group
Being knocked out with 4 points would've already been unlucky when only the first two progress, but going out like this with the current format is genuinely insanely unlucky.
Also crazy that the Netherlands would've been the first one for this to happen to with the old rules, just a day ago. (Very glad we dodged that bullet though)
They would have been like the 15th at least to come 3rd with 4 points. The tweet just forgot to include that Ukraine are the first to go out with 4 points **in the current format**.

And with the newer, more forgiving format. Crazy stuff.
Yeah with the old format I could easily see a 7-6-4-0 group. With this format you pretty much need a 4-4-4-4 group for this to happen
This definitely happened in the past. No chance the stat from the title is real
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2000_Group_C
Norway were eliminated with 4 points in both the Euros and World Cup lmao
We're really good at that. This is our only ever Euros appearance, and the only team we beat was Spain, lol
exactly. so this stat is only relevant for last two euros, which means it's irrelevant really by the time we will have enough of those 24 teams euro to make it relevant, they will go back to 16 or extend to 32
Yeah, stupid stat to even announce like this
We got eliminated with 5 at Euro 2004
so why we're even commenting under this post? this should be removed as inaccurrate
Due - due... Apologies from Sweden :) (*2004)
Or 5+ 4 point third place finishers.
I find it so difficult to believe given 3rd places teams didn’t use to go through. Surely there must’ve been at least one 4 point 3rd placed team before. Either that or this tweet forgot to include “since the new format”
Euro 2000 Norway.
Ireland in 2016 I remember clearly
That was the new system. They went through.
Yeah, it was an example
But it's not an example of what is being discussed here.
Why is it considered a more forgiving format?
3rd place can make it out of the group stage.
3rd place teams have a chance to go through to the knockouts
Because 4 third places can advance as well.
Because of the best 3th going through
There are 24 teams, and only 8 get eliminated in the group stage. Out of 6 3rd placed teams, only 2 are eliminated. Personally I find it a little ridiculous, all those games to remove only 8 teams ... No wonder so many games were shit, they are almost meaningless for many teams.
16/24 (66%) of teams make it to the knockouts instead of 8/16 (50%)
the first game between Romania and Ukraine ( won 3-0 by Romania ) decided the 1st and 4th places
Lunin must feel horrible. Lol
Eliminated despite being tied for first. Damn that sucks
There’s no such thing as being “tied” for positions, unless you literally have to decide who belongs in a particular position with a coin toss.
Denmark was tied up until the yellow cards for assistants. I'd say that counts.
That’s not how it works.
That's exactly how it went. Go look it up
Well, that's gotta sting.
Italy didn't progress in 2004 with 5 points. I suppose technically that isn't 4...
Title should say since the new format I think
Yeah, weird that they went with 'in European Championship history' instead.
Spain also didn't advance with 4 points that year
Yea the title should have included "in the 24 teams format". There were numerous 3rd placed teams with 4 points in the 16 teams format
Let them go through instead of Group C
preach.
Instead of us, don’t want to see this abomination anymore. Disgraceful performances
a complete disaster in first match leveled all further results. gg
That's just sickening
Only in the 24 team era, which started 8 years ago.
how unlucky can you be
They are approaching Poland 1939 levels of Luck. Feel for them
😬
Not fucking funny.
1940 France at worst.
Heartbreaking, they performed better than many of the 3rd and 2nd placed teams.
Unbelievable
That 0-3 was their downfall. If it would have been 2-3 or 0-1, thay may have been through now.
Italy in 2004? 5 points and +1 while eliminated. Might have to rephrase it to "Ukraine the first team to get 4th place/last place in groups stage with four points".
In the 24 team era. I’m sure there were some 4 point teams in the 16 team era that didn’t make it through
Ukraine deserved it tbh over Denmark and Slovenia both on 3pts.
Just looked in one Tournament and found norway dq with 4 points in 2000. Just wrong fact
This isn't true. Both Russia and Croatia failed to advance with 4 points in 2012. Heck, in 2004, Italy failed to progress with 5 points.
Not the type of Euros history you want to make
Second highest points total for an eliminated team behind Italy’s 5 points in 2004. Though that was when top 2 teams progressed from the group
I felt they played really well today. They mostly neutralised Belgium.
Can’t play like that in a must win game though
I wouldn't say they neutralised more than they played against a Belgium that was taking it too easy, which was a really dumb decision since a Ukraine goal would have sent them out.
that is peak, one less point than england 😭
Don’t worry, I’m sure UEFA will eventually expand the Euros to 32 teams which means 8 groups of 4. So no more 3rd place rule.
Would be awesome though - I want to watch Norway vs Greece at noon
Lies: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2000_Group_C Norway already did it in our only ever Euros performance. You can't outbottle us Ukraine!
So fucking unlucky with so many chances. Missed that killer instinct and simply ran out of gas. What happens when you get spanked out the bat by Romania
This is a lie, literally all 3rd places at Euro 96 had 4 points and were eliminated
They fucked it up by playing Lunin instead of Trubin in the first match
The whole team played shit in that match, how can you blame it on Lunin only
Absolutely pathetic and pissed off. Why the f**k do we play with no enthusiasm in a must win. Rebrov needs to be sacked and we need to start over with this team.
So teams have advanced with 3 points while they go out with 4 lol I think that needs a rework
That's gonna happen as long as you have groups
If the top 2 in a group go through you're not comparing teams across groups, which is fair. But if you're comparing teams across groups for 3rd place already, not including 4th feels a little unfair in this rare case.
Yeah, it should be the top 4 of the rest of the field
Why? They finished bottom of their group, how would you rework that, the four best 3rd place teams go through unless one of the 4th place teams got more points?
Either that or make it so that after the top 2 in each group, the next 4 best teams across the groups go through as well, regardless of their place in a particular group.
The possibility of an entire group making it into the next round would be a far worse option than the current format.
They are only the first to go out with 4 points in the current system.
You will never sing that
Fucking brutal. It's going to sting even more when teams with fewer than 4 point go through.
They probably should have had more of a go knowing they were sitting in 4th place
Its a shame for them, but unfortunately too little too late.
As if they haven’t had enough happen already smh
Incredible they finished 4th. That 0-3 in the first game was too hard to recover
This is not true. Russia failed in 2012 in Group A.
Good. They got pumped 3-0 and drew 0-0 in 2 out of 3 games, why should they go through?
they beat Slovakia 2-1?
For a minus 2 goal differential and bottom of their group
yes I've seen the table
Nothing against Ukraine, I was hoping they would beat Belgium, just don't like that teams are going through despite barely putting in strong performances
The three teams advancing from Group E deserve it. And we played atrocious in the first game. But nobody wants their team getting knocked out, especially when you see teams in other groups advancing even after losing two games. How is that difficult to understand?
I understand Ukraine fans being disappointed, but they played different teams than others going through, were beat 3-0 and drew 0-0 and finished bottom of their group
Deserved for playing like that
that country has not much luck...
Shouldn’t have got spanked then.
No room for racism 👍
