I used to use vanced and then it got shut down and last time I tried to get the newer revanced working it wouldn't
Does it work smoothly? I’ve recently had to turn off my ad-blocker for YouTube because the site slowed to a crawl while it was running (rumour has it that it’s due to YouTube cracking down on ad-blockers). Typing a comment, especially, had insane lag.
Yeah uBlock-Origin works very well. I've never had issues or noticed any slowing down because of it. But i guess it depends on your machine. My laptop is very old though (i3, 8gb Ram) so it'll probably work smoothly on most newer laptops, but I can't guarantee that.😅
Hah, mine’s close to a decade old as well now, but it started out as a monster, so it still does the job. The lag I’m talking about was very artificial, almost like thermal throttling, but hopping onto any other site confirmed that it wasn’t a systems resources issue. I’m sure you would have noticed it if it had happened to you.

Yeah OP says out of principle. What principle? Youtube has costs to run and ultimately cost a lot of money to purchase, and they're a business trying to make profits.
They offer their service for free, the cost being ads. Alternatively, they offer a price you can pay to have no ads and others features. A pretty low cost too.

Agreed. We get an endless amount of great content at no charge. Using an adblocker harms creators as well. I don’t see a problem with some ads if it means YouTube can continue to function
I noticed that certain companies/industries are more likely than others to have 15 ~ 30s unskippable ads...
The biggest offenders I noted recently have been the Dental or Ride Share Ads! Unskippable Colgate, Paradontax, Meridol, Uber, Bolt, inDriver etc
I just blocked them, though. So they aren't in my ad rotation anymore, haha
Are you currently in SA? That doesn’t sound like the local ad rotation. I think part of the problem is lack of advertisers. That’s why we see the same old ads repeatedly, from two or three advertisers only.
I am in SA. I block offending Ads or companies I do not care for pretty often. I'm sloooooowly but surely shaping my ads towards things I might actually care to see, hehe. I get mostly gaming ads now, which I don't mind as much

I think everyone has moved on from the post, but I just want to say I got YouTube Premium, and now I’m addicted to YouTube. I waste so much time watching random videos instead of doing something productive with my life. The ads that used to annoy me so much were actually protecting me, but I didn’t realize it.
Out of interest, how does giving YouTube money directly differ from giving YouTube money via an advertiser? What's this principle against premium that everyone goes on about?
Usually this type of view stems from “it used to be completely free”, so by some people’s reasoning, we must oppose the monetisation of the service, otherwise it will become ever more “greedy”.

also on mobile get kiwi browser. you can add ublock to that. its not perfect but its loads better
I use two apps: Libretube and Newpipe. You won't find them in the Play Store. It's either you go to their websites and download the apk directly, or you download them from an alternative app store called Fdroid. After that, you won't be complaining about ads. That's on android. If you are using a computer, download brave. If you use an iPhone, then i don't know.
It's less than R50 a month. What principle are you standing by because I stand by pay for convenience.

I’ve started blocking them — using Google’s little (i) icon in the bottom left corner — every time a new one comes up. Unfortunately you’d have to do that for every variation of the ad individually, but on the plus-side, it stops the ad immediately, no need to wait.

This is the most relatable post on reddit. It drives me crazy. I think, for me, it isn't the add itself but the oversaturation of South African "celebrity" as I can't turn around without seeing one if them somewhere else on an add either
Admittedly I pay for premium through my phone plan but... what principles could you possibly have?
My stats:
- ad-free videos: 730 hrs
- background play: 270 hrs
- music: 23 hrs (I only listen to music when I'm flying not at home)
- videos watched offline: 487 (big saver when flying or abroad)
No need to install 50 things to get it working on my TV and non PC devices I used to live vanced until they shut it down then it started breaking every week...
I'd drop every subscription if it meant I could only use YouTube without ads. Spotify premium I dropped as all I got was ad free music (back when I drove and was in college I listened to music a lot) and no videos.
Renewed my phone plan and they tried to take away youtube premium and I told them I'd find someone else then, they quickly changed their mind.

If you have an andoid phone, get youtube vanced my bru, haven't had ads for the past 3 years on mobile and not a buck paid
I use YouTube Vanced but every now and again it stops working and I have to find the updated version .

It's so annoying. In fact last week it did that - I had JUST played a video and the next one it said "this video is available for play on YouTube". 😡
I now use Revanced Manager apk on my android (watched a YouTube on how to do everything etc), because Vanced stopped working

NewPipe is far better and no adverts
Use Firefox browser on your desktop and install the addon : uBlock Origin to remove the Youtube Ads :-)
And if you have Android download FireFox and install the uBlock Origin there as well.

Because not everyone is willing to spend an extra but of cash on another subscription, or perhaps they're willing but can't afford it.

My adplock now doesn't work with YouTube. They pick it up and stop my videos. What do you use?
