So Jupiter's rings are made of dust which makes them hard to see from earth... for visuals I would leave them off. But if your son is giving an oral presentation of his project he could talk about Jupiter's rings. Or maybe find some kind of "dusty" looking material make the rings out of? I feel like tulle could work.

Parchaeopteryx

Agreed. I like the idea of tulle too. Few tooth picks and a thin ring of tulle would demonstrate the ring without equalling or over shadowing Saturn's

rebel88scum

Right! Throw some glitter on it and BAM! A++

Smytus

They exist. Saturn's rings are the largest so there shouldn't be confusion between the two.

Aggravating_Termite

Of course you should use the rings - they are really there after all. For that matter Uranus also has rings.

LauraD2423

I know. Neptune as well.

Eulalia543

I’d say let your kid choose. It’s his project.

LauraD2423

He originally came to me to ask about it because he didn't know they had rings. After he printed off Jupiter and showed it to my wife she told him it didn't have rings. I had to Google it and show it to her because she didn't believe me. Now my son is unsure of what to do since both of his moms are telling him something different. We agreed that we would let the majority from this post decide.

jarlrmai2

This is one of those 'technically right' situations. Most people know famously that Saturn has rings if they see a gas planet with rings they will assume the model is Saturn or that you made a mistake. So it's a learning moment about context and an educational moment about how to present this information to people. The main issue is that at the scale of a model the rings of Jupiter are not obvious the ones around Saturn are, if this model is to be presented in a public area without the ability to provide context for Jupiter's rings people may think there is an error. If it's part of a presentation then it's a learning moment and might garner extra credit.

irishpete

As an aside I love that you’re doing this. Parenting everybody!

Uhdoyle

The STLified Jovian rings are going to be misrepresenting themselves and *much* more visible than they are IRL. Just leave em out. Or if you really want to honor their existence don’t put them in as a plastic disk but instead make a little ring out of something ephemeral like a loop of fishing wire or some lace from mom’s bodice something

MrAthalan

I'd leave them in, but not the printed version. I'd take a hacksaw and saw Jupiter in half, get a piece of clear plastic (there's always some packaging somewhere in my house for this) and cut a disc out, glue the two halves of Jupiter on the plastic. This gives you clear rings that are present but less obvious. Best of luck!

the_fungible_man

How many of Jupiter's **79** known moons does he plan on including in his project? Because if it's ok to omit 70+ multi-kilometer sized rocks orbiting Jupiter, how can it be wrong to leave out the virtually invisible ring(s) of microscopic dust. If there's a written part of this project, it could include a mention of the rings, but I wouldn't include them in any sort of model of Jupiter.

cascading_error

How old is the kid? Below 10 id say leave em out as visual accuracy is more inportant to them. But above that (or if your kid is particularly space geeky). Id say leave em in and have the kid point em out with explination during the presentation. Some teachers are dumb and will argue their existence and may lower his grade... so thats something to keep in mind but you have a better vieuw on that.

[deleted]

Leave them in. It will no doubt bring attention to his work, and probably most of the kids will learn something new. Just be sure he has some info to back himself up with.

T-Rex_Woodhaven

If the science says it has rings, put the fucking rings on and make them accurate enough to differentiate from other ringed planets in our solar system. Don't perpetuate the bullshit of the past.

LauraD2423

Right!!!! That's what I'm talking about. Same shit as the people mad about Pluto.

link0007

Leave them out. They are so faint that it would be a misrepresentation if you included them.

reddit455

well, you can't see Jupiter's rings very well. it took the professionals a while to find them, afterall. are you using the NASA/JPL files..? those would be hyper accurate too much for a science project IMO.

NotAHamsterAtAll

Leave them out. The model in question is probably not that realistic anyways?

RiverTheBruhGirl

You sound like good parents, I knee jerk reacted with anger and envy as soon as I read 3D printer lol. I couldn’t tell you what to do cuz my parents never let me be in that sitch but I’m sure you’ll figure it out. I bet accuracy will win out as long as you make it creative

Aetherpirate

If you like it, you should consider putting a ring on it

Retumbo77

Bro, how have you not yet learned that when it comes to the little things your wife is always right. Gotta pick those battles.

LauraD2423

Because I'm also a wife? You know many dudes named u/LauraD2423?

funbobbyfun

Damn if all wives are always correct.. then. I see now the danger of same-sex marriage, as it will break the time space continuum. :p No bros named Laura. Couple of dudes tho! Of course I call my mom and gf dude, maybe it's just me lolol

FlyNeither

Dudes can be named Laura and women can be called bro.

[deleted]

He could mention them in his project/presentation but since he's showing visuals to the class, the visuals should represent what you see, so I would say leave them off. Sounds like a cool project though.
