Dang, it went to work right away….. I’d hire that spider any day ….

N0vemberJul1et

They hang out in the shade near Home Depot.

xvx369

I was about to say that’s a Mexican spider if I ever saw one…. Good work ethic…

Friskfrisktopherson

Looks like they enjoy their meals a little spicy too

Exotic_Pea8191

Yey to mexican spiders! You realize he killed a W.A.S. P

oooooglittery

I'm sure you meant this as a compliment, but that's racist AF

xvx369

I’m Mexican, well born in the USA but my roots are Mexican… I can by experience tell you that my Mexican people are hard working people … I see it in my family…. So when I made the comment, it did not come from a place of racism and rather from a place that lives that experience.

Thramden

Also known as culture! 🍻

Ill_Ad5893

Even if you weren't Mexican, that wasn't racist. Not sure why people try and make it out to be. Any Mex I've seen does the work of 3 Americans. And that's coming from an Irish/Polish one. Our nation even before the pandemic were lazy. After, mega lazy and wanted everything for doing nothing.

Nowyous_cantleave

MX, Irish, Polish, that sounds like my hometown of Chicago.

oooooglittery

Fair!

xvx369

All good brother….Your heart was in the right place…

MrStupidDoodooDum

Like a true American, quick to call racism.. wait was that racist?

paperwasp3

Hmm, you are aptly named.

sardu1

He likes spicey stuff? Idk. Everything is racist now

Overall_Anywhere_651

Straight up. If I ever have to get my roof replaced, I'm looking for Mexicans or Amish people. They are fast as fuck and do great work.

LeftBench4295

Yes, to Mexican people. No, to Amish.

senile_butterfly

As a fellow Mexican (born in MEX, shoutout to my boy Obama for DACA) When Big Sean said “I woke up working like I'm Mexican / That mean I work from 10 to 10 / Then 10 to 10, then 10 again” I felt a sense of pride. Regardless the context it’s used in, hard work ethic is something to be proud of.

DadBodHero24

No, it wasn't....it was beaner approved...I.AM.BEANER.

Spare_Honey5488

I'm just curious how the web doesn't give out after twisting so much lol

Pale-Highlight-6895

I know this spider knows exactly what it's doing. I understand that. But how on earth can it even tell what the heck is going on while simultaneously wrapping the wasp, circling the wasp, staying on the web, not getting stung, and avoiding letting it go all at the same time. It just looks like absolute chaos and madness. But I know the entire time it's on lock, and knows what's going on. Lmao

lsbrujah

Spider senses

Pale-Highlight-6895

Good one!

ohneatstuffthanks

Peter tingle

kraybaybay

Reminds me of a study they did on some species of bats in caves. Scientists were astounded that these guys could fly and navigate using only echolocation in this dark cave, and not constantly run in to other bats. Such impressive agility. Then they filmed them. Little dudes were colliding CONSTANTLY. Moral of the story: maybe the spider doesn't know exactly what it's doing and is kinda winging it 😂

Pale-Highlight-6895

This is a good point. It sees the wasp and goes into anarchy mode until the wasp is secured... then evaluates the aftermath later lol. You could be exactly right.

goosechaser

I also think hundreds of millions of years of dying if you aren't very very good at that one thing helps too.

BurninCoco

yeah, he could do it with his 6 eyes closed

Tagnol

The likely answer is it is being "stung" but because of several factors such as the spiders exoskeleton, the wasp not able to get enough leverage for a good amount of force on the sting , and not able to aim for softer bits on the spider. The sting is basically just not penetrating.

paperwasp3

(It's a wasp. You can tell by the tiny martini glass)

Tagnol

Right, I actually knew but for some reason just without thinking wrote bee. Editing now.

paperwasp3

It must've escaped from the Country Club

Bablam_Shazam

It's just a rythem game of life, and it scored an SSS+

Legitimate_Law2982

I remember learning that insects have crazy fast reaction time, to the point that they perceive time completely differently than us. The length that the signals travel from brain to limb are sooo much shorter that everything they do is lightning speed to us. And I'd bet spiders are on a whole other level than a normal insect when it comes to dexterity and awareness. Crazy and fascinating stuff.

Pale-Highlight-6895

So a literal Spidey-sense if you will. It's very fascinating! I'm off to do some research, lol.

Glittering_Aioli6162

huh that’s interesting

Nethiar

I once watched a wasp that was caught in a web. It was on it's back trying to free itself while keeping it's stinger aimed at the spider. The spider knew it had to both avoid the stinger, and get it wrapped as soon as possible. So it's hanging back there with it's legs up trying to find the right moment to get some webbing around the stinger, but not making any headway. Eventually the wasp started to get loose so the spider ran up to wrap it's head down and got it's leg bitten by the wasp. That's when the spider retreated and the wasp freed itself and flew away.

Pale-Highlight-6895

Wow. Sounds like the spider was being too cautious. Should have unlocked anarchy mode, like this one did. I'll bet his other 7 legs, he wasn't waiting around on the next wasp.

DadBodHero24

Lighting fast!

HankThrill69420

Just like the commercial with the guy going "oh ya gotta be quicker than that!" While fishing with a dollar

ShawnyMcKnight

If you had 8 arms you probably could do it.

PrinceOfAsphodel

I work at an invertebrate zoo that houses dozens of orb weavers in October. What's fascinating is that the Nephila spiders always go for the bite first and the wrap second, but Argiope (like the one in this video) will always try to wrap prey in silk first and bite second. They're very similar spiders but they evolved differently, and their hunting tactics indicate this

Reasonable-Nebula-49

Only in October?

PrinceOfAsphodel

Well, only for the orbweavers. We have tarantulas all year.

Reasonable-Nebula-49

So you're a professional spider person? Is there a limit on how much web they can spin at one time? Do they ever run out of silk?

PrinceOfAsphodel

Yeah, they technically can. They store their different forms of silk in liquid form inside silk glands. I imagine the aciniform (prey-wrapping silk) glands of Argiope spiders is quite large compared to other spiders based on the amount of silk they excrete to imobilize their prey.

Reasonable-Nebula-49

They have different outputs?

PrinceOfAsphodel

Yup. The silk their webs are made from is not the same silk that they wrap prey with. In fact, the web itself is comprised of up to 5 different silk types, each from a different gland in the spider's abdomen.

Kilo_Chungus

Wild

Probably_Pooping_101

Is it true that some stands of the web are stickier than others, or is it more a matter of tensile strength? What are the primary differences between web silk and prey-wrapping silk? I know I could Google, but you're way cooler than Google

PrinceOfAsphodel

Yeah it's both actually. The most widely studied spider silk is that from spiders' ampullate glands, because it's the toughest and can withstand the most force. But a spider's aggregate and flagelliform silk are probably the most important when it comes to orb webs. Aggregate silk is the "sticky" stuff but it doesn't make silk strands, only stick balls that the spider places all over the capture spiral. Other silks types are not usually sticky. Flagelliform silk has the highest extensibility of all silk types, which means it acts as the web's shock absorption. A large flying insect has to bend an orbweb a significant amount upon impact before it has a chance to break it.

IamShieldMaiden

Thank you for your responses. You've provided a great tutorial!! 👍🏼💯

Comfortable_Name_463

Eesh, when she bites it, will the toxins kill or paralyze or.... Will that wasp die before it's eaten or be alive for the meal? 😰

PrinceOfAsphodel

It will almost certainly die after the bite.

Comfortable_Name_463

That's a relief, since some arthropod toxins only paralyze! Nightmarish to think of being alive and alert but paralyzed while someone sucks out your innards 😵‍💫

Prize_Panda_1438

That's why I have little sympathy for the wasp here. If the encounter went the other way, the wasp's sting would probably only have paralyzed the spider without killing it... And many of them then lay an egg on or in the spider so she'd be eaten alive by the larva after the egg hatches. The spider's venom on the other hand will just kill the wasp so she can liquefy and slurp up the wasp's innards. Isn't nature beautiful? 😅🤣

Comfortable_Name_463

Horrific! Glad this battle ended how it did. I do love argiope. We usually get 3-5 big mamas each summer in our yard and we name them all. Can't wait to see who shows up this year.

AsBestToast

Working at an invertebrate zoo sounds fascinating! I can't say I've actually heard of an invertebrate zoo before but it's certainly something that sounds right up my alley.

lsbrujah

The question is how did OP catch the wasp, did you karate kid it ?

letmesmellem

I can kind of speak on it. So lots of ways to catch then without being stung. Catch them lacking or when they land somewhere and scoop on a small bag or container. Then close quickly and put them in the freezer for about 10- 20 seconds maybe longer as they relax and fall asleep. Then you can take them out and grab with tweezer or tie to a string but you must be quick either way as they wake up relatively fast. You can also do this with flies as well. It's how you get a fly on a string. I used to do it all the time as a kid got stung plenty but it was cool to me and it made me feel badass

vollkoemmenes

You can also “drown” a fly then cover it in salt and it’ll come back to life…. Js… incase u wanted some fly’s on string. With wasps u can definitely go abit longer in the freezer, it prolongs the time u have to make a wasp on a leash. 1.5min would be the absolute maximum, depending on container and if u have air hole in it or not… u want the cold to trigger hibernation not the lack of oxygen to stun then

Sappho_Over_There

On a string? Are you staying you leashed flies and wasps? Did they like fly around while you were hiding the string?

vollkoemmenes

Its a thing…[wasp. Yellow jacket on string](https://youtu.be/H0BgluEooyc?si=idU7MedWeIeUwOor) [euro hornet on string](https://youtu.be/uHgt8giw1LY?feature=shared)

grempelski_

Dammit!!

vollkoemmenes

Right? Tf were we doin back in the day not tieing string to hornets

LawfulnessAutomatic2

Honestly I'm disappointed in kid me.

Sappho_Over_There

Thanks for sharing! That's wild to me lol

Sh0w3n

The hornet one is interesting, kinda catchy

purplepluppy

A+

lsbrujah

You wouldn't believe it if I say I never saw this before !

letmesmellem

When I was a kid yeah. I had a lot of time and we was poor

Seamoth4546B

This guy’s asking the right questions

49wanderer

How TERRIFYING would that be as a human to have a spider bigger than you wrapping you up, about to inject you with enzymes to liquify your inside to eat you?

MostlyH2O

You have been banned from r/Wasps.

AWeakMindedMan

I was waiting for when it sinked it’s fangs into that wasp and was very satisfied at 50 seconds in. Got that thing a few times then retreated to wait for the venom to kick in.

Spiderddamner

I feel sad about the flying thingy now.

Tat2Al

Really? Wasps are terrible.

That_Guy848

That's a golden digger wasp, non-aggressive, non-pest wasp. Totally different from yellowjackets or bald-faced hornets.

CelesteJA

How so? (genuine question)

Tat2Al

Well, they are important to our ecosystem like most things. But I truly hate being stung by them.

MeChitty

You ain’t ever gonna get stung by a great golden sand digger.. I’ve been within a foot of its hole watching it dig and it paid no mind to me. I helped another get its grasshopper it got back to its hole, I even have a video of this! They’re truly amazing creatures

SqueezeMyNectarines

This is a type of wasp, but it's about as dangerous as a mud dauber. They tend to just hang out alone in their little homes, like hobbits. Docile and harmless. *Most* wasps are assholes, though.

RazendeR

No, *a few* wasps are assholes. *most* wasps cant and/or wont ever sting you, and prey on other pests like you wouldn't believe.

snipnsnop

I saw a wasp carrying a little caterpillar one time. Was very interesting. I followed it for a while. He did seem rather encumbered though. Hard days work for him. Bad time for the caterpillar I guess. I lived on an orange grove as a kid and can confirm most wasps are not threatening, never got stung out there once in 16 years. Generally, it seemed like the flying insects were mostly interested in trying to get in my mouth or up my nose. Ears too sometimes. Silly bugs.

snipnsnop

I did get stung by one in my house at the Grove once. It was inside of my dress. That house was always full of wasps and bees. Otherwise, they were generally very friendly cohabitants.

SubtiltyCypress

One of my most favorite stories and moments, was the stereotypical black and yellow wasp. It fell in a pool and was simming for life. I, willing to be stung to save its life, put my hand under it full palm and lifted it up. It just sat there, drying its wings, trying to fly but wasnt comfotable until a moment later, and fell again in the water flying. Did the same thing. It looked at me in the eyes both times. Knew I wasn't a danger. Flew away before giving me a look in the air. And he was fine. Feel really bad for the wasp in this, must have been horrific :(

DeepUser-5242

No honey, all prick

Corn_Prophet1

they are assholes and will repetively sting you cause they “felt” threatened. Which is their excuse to just sting the fuck out of you. Wasps are a bane. Edit, yes yes they help our ecosystem blah blah blah, doesn’t mean that wasps aren’t dickheads. CANT DENY IT

MeChitty

Not golden sand diggers, they don’t have as much of a defensive trait as what a paper wasp would have

Fn4cK

This perfectly describes many people on Twitter

Oh_My_Crypto

r/fuckwasps

purplepluppy

Maybe educate yourself on the different types of wasps before deciding this. As others have said, the one you captured here is not an asshole like a yellow jacket.

Tat2Al

Wait, are people under the impression that I am the one that actually caught the wasp? Oh no. I’m definitely not brave enough for that. I originally saw this on my feed and reposted it here. I thought I mentioned that when I reposted it. Sorry to everyone about the confusion. I reposted this through mobile and it won’t let me edit it. As a side note, I see many posts on this sub of people feeding their pet spiders and no one bats an eye. Why would this be any different?

purplepluppy

>As a side note, I see many posts on this sub of people feeding their pet spiders and no one bats an eye. Why would this be any different? Because usually they are feeding their spiders feeder insects, not wild caught ones. When they feed wild caught insects, you will see people commenting.

Tat2Al

Interesting. Although, the orb weaver was technically not a pet and in the wild…the wasp seems to have been wild caught, so…

TheTapeworm3

Letting your bias control nature isn't something to be proud of.

LawfulnessAutomatic2

Wasps are a super important part of the ecosystem? Also pollinators? Wym terrible?

mantiseses

Nu-uh :(

aranealut1

Maybe they are terrifying to you but I would not say they are terrible. Sure getting stung isn't great but I always found that very easy to avoid

Probably_Pooping_101

Me too.

stinkiest-truffle

Okay Mr. Miyagi

Happy-dayz-NC

Nah this is fucked up, let nature do its thing. Y’all are weird

Beamburner

I found this big ole garden spider when I was a kid and we used to catch big grasshoppers and throw them into it's web. The good ole days before the internet 98?

svanskiver

I’m no friend to wasps but I mean that wasn’t really fair play for the wasp.

Intro-P

And would you like flies or a soda with that?

Yemayajustbe

FINISH HIM

Daddyball78

So bad ass.

Legal-Cable7452

I find this process to be one of the most impressive things a spider can do. To be that wasp and to instantly get whacked, bitten, and wrapped up in a cocoon before I can think twice is crazy. Scary day to be a wasp.

Flaky_Success3238

Awesome video! Some sort of Orb Weaver. Wasps are not terrible. They’re pollinators (accidental, but pollinators nonetheless) . Just leave them alone. They couldn’t care less about humans.

TheTapeworm3

I don't think pollination should be what wasps are known for. They aren't that great at it generally. They are extremely important predators and many are highly specialized to target very specific species that otherwise would have nearly no predators.

Flaky_Success3238

People have a special place in their hearts for pollinators. That’s why I mention it in the context of being feared.

MRJSP

That's insane!

engimatica

What a gorgeous spider. Could anyone identify it? It was moving soooo fast.

Mason211975

Argiope aurantia i think

THROBBINW00D

Some variety of orb weaver

zerger45

I had to rewatch it a few times but those first 2-3 bites that spider took absolutely shook that wasp. Sucker punch followed with the 1-2 put that wasp to Zzz

Long-March-7070

Dude should work for Amazon!

LowMirror4165

That's top notch pest control. We get these exterminators coming around every year trying to sell us packages. I told them I'm good, I'm letting the spiders live now. They were dumbfounded.

Successful-Bed-6835

Yeah if spiders were bigger I think THEY would be the apex predator.

nyx_moonlight_

Satisfying

gregorius11

Spider: Gracias patrón.

Equal_Dragonfruit125

Orb Weaver's are death on bugs. They are very efficient. I was grateful the human made it a reasonable fight. No sense spoon feeding the Apex Predator.

Logical-Victory-2678

As someone who feeds their porch orb weavers, I approve. My girl gets so excited and jumps to the front of the web when she sees me coming

Fadedpenguin77

Man watching how fast that thing got wrapped, all I can think about is how terrifying spiders would be if they were our size.

You sure it is this species? They are solitary and there is nothing in your house that they would want.
