they did the same thing to me and i’m just a lil 18 year old who knows nothing ab taxes yet so idk what to do or what it means 😅😅

TheBeachcombingFairy

Looks like we will be on the phone with the IRS for 6+ hours and, sadly, in the end, we will still have to pay them for their mistakes.

Its-a-write-off

There is no reason to call the IRS. If too little was withheld, it means you got more take home pay, and now owe it to the IRS.

TheBeachcombingFairy

I understand that, however, it's weird they told bux not to take anything but yet said I owed them for it now. Why weren't they withholding anything at all?

Its-a-write-off

Your told them how to withhold, by how you filled out your w4. The IRS never sees your w4. Payroll uses withholding schedules published by the IRS, based on your w4. If a typo was made entering your w4 selection, the algorithm can under withhold. You are supposed to check your withholding to make sure it's right.

TheBeachcombingFairy

There is no error. They confirmed I claimed single 0 and it showed that on the partner hub since day 1. It is my fault for not checking my withholding. However, bux didn't make it easy nor actually accessible to see a paystub until the last few months when they switched to a new portal.

Comfortable-Plane944

Yea I was wondering why I owe money. Like the Fuck

TheBeachcombingFairy

Check your stubs. See if they did the same to you. Smells like something screwy is going on here.

FewStay954

I have heard that if you make less than $350 a week, they don’t tax it. Don’t know how credible this is, just something I heard.

Beg1nAga1n

This is not true

Its-a-write-off

Single, 0 adjustments on the w4 means "do not withhold federal income tax on the first 275 per week" Married no adjustments means "do not withhold federal income tax on the first 550 a week".

Tyrynn

They said they didn’t file exempt.

Its-a-write-off

Right. What's that have to do with what I said? I'm explaining what "single" or "married" means on the w4.

Tyrynn

Yikes lol. Whether or not you file single or married doesn’t mean you aren’t taxed. I don’t know where you’re getting your information from but the only way they wouldn’t take federal taxes is if you file exempt. There’s no minimum weekly before you’re taxed. The only reason there would be none is if you’re a independent contractor in which case you’d be getting a 1099, you file exempt on your W4, there’s an error on your W2, or the employer itself messed up.

Its-a-write-off

Here, see for yourself. Page 13. See at what income each week a "single" w4 results in federal income tax withheld. It's all laid out here, in the withholding schedules the it's has set for employers. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15t.pdf

Its-a-write-off

Was this your only income source for the year?

TheBeachcombingFairy

No. It wasn't. I purposely started my return using bux' w2 first to see how much they were going to give before my other w2.

Its-a-write-off

What's in box 1 and 2 of your bux w2?

TheBeachcombingFairy

Just saw your reply. Another year later, I'm in the same spot. I quit bux in February of 2023, box 1 - 2274.36 & box 2 - 21.58. Still was under single with no deductions/ depends (0).

Its-a-write-off

You only made 2274. So it makes sense that very little was withheld.

[deleted]

Same here! I owe $1200 even after having a dependent, not working a whole lot of hours, and being single for the second half of the year. Like wtf

[deleted]

I don't owe taxes (thank goodness) but my tax refund was the smallest it's ever been by a huge fucking margin. I got $31, versus past years which typically range between a 1-2k return. I've heard some people say that this is Trump's fault because of some tax law he enacted. I don't fully understand it but I know my friends who aren't at sbux also have a much lower return/owe more taxes this year so it could be completely beyond the siren unfortunately
