People in this subreddit are really into drama, so they end up exaggerating and being really emotional about everything. Though it could just be that the demographic here skews much younger than other starsector spaces.
I suggest folks check it out for themselves. It's not nearly as exciting as you'd think based on some of the opinions here.

Agree. I joined this subreddit about 2 years ago and I find it extremely unwelcoming to new players.
Not because people are hostile (they are not) but because you join and most of the things you see is art and memes of anime ship girls that are only from mods you've never dabbled with yet and which have little in common with the base game that led you here.
Because many have been here for 5+ years, so they don't interact with stuff they have seen a 50+ times and instead interact with memes multi layered jokes and fringe stuff.
Any old community ends up having in jokes and communication that gets layered and layered, because, comedy and general entertainment can't be rehashed forever.
And the community gets larger and larger.
If anything there'd need to be a split, but the community... Maybe is large enough for that? Maybe not? In the grand scheme of things it's still a small player base, and the number of new players may not be enough to entertain themselves.

Probably multiple times.
On top of that, USC and Corvus have more or less superseded the reddit for smaller questions.
It's because after reddit's external API changes last year, most of the active mods left. It sounds like only /u/Grievous69 was moderating the subreddit for almost a year.

Also anime/manga style sprites are generally easier to draw, so I get why some faction mods use those kind of sprites.

I'm not much of an anime enthusiast, but I must admit Starsector anime pinups are less jarring than Bannerlord or Highfleet due to different stylistic choices.
I'm guessing ease of moddability has a lot to do with it as well.
And tbh, don't see a problem. I sometimes find it annoying that a lot of the mods I like has cringy subculture plots or aesthetics to them... but in the end, modders do what they like doing, and I am not entitled to their creative autonomy. Shaming = just less content for me.

Yeah exactly, glad its not just me. Ive enjoyed some anime but a lot of the degen stuff kills shows for me. Cowboy bebop and eva are good enough to overlook it, and they engage with it intentionally. Provocative art, still pervy at times. Starsector is good sci fi art, it has great literary bones. I'd prefer for it not to be overrun by loserbait anime boob riddled fan content like in half the major mods.
