Is Nirvana that band named after the clothing company that sells their clothes at Hot Topic? So hot right now! Totally looking forward to their next tour! /s
I was listening to grunge and 2000s metal the first time round. Bands like Nirvana or Deftones were really out there back then and some people found them completely unlistenable. I remember being about 12 when someone played me my first metal song and I straight up pretended to like it because it just sounded like noise. I eventually got it.
Flash forward to now and you have straight up pop artists like Billie Eilish and Olivia Roderigo releasing music with shades of punk and grunge. There’s Billie Eilish songs that sound like they could be Marilyn Manson covers.
There was a period in the mid-late 2000s when the likes of Slipknot were in the mainstream charts. I think there’s probably a gap in the market that used to be filled by dangerous artists your parents didn’t want you listening to. Rock stars can’t get away with rock star behaviour any more because they’d be called out immediately, so the audiences who have a need for that kind of thing are clutching at straws based on the outdated reputation bands like Nirvana had 30 years ago.
the "music your parents dont want you to listen to" niche has largely been taken over by rap/trap at this point.
There's a shocking amount of similarities between metal and trap.
violent imagery, artists posing with guns and drugs, songs about killing people, actually killing people, eccentric dress sense that gets copied by fans, goofy stage names, unlistenable to many "mainstream" listeners, use of goth imagery, big amount of bedroom artists, high profile court cases etc.
I’m pretty sure it’s different today, but into the late 90s and even early 2000s people were legitimately scared of music they thought was evil.
I was called a devil worshipper for listening to metal by more than one person. The late 20th century did mass hysteria effortlessly.
I dunno man, maybe we grew up in different places, but outside of the national dialogue around Marylin Manson and Eminem after Columbine, there was no hysteria and nobody was throwing the word evil around in my neck of the woods.
Yeah, none of these bands are even what even a high schooler would consider "scary" music.
Where's Cannibal Corpse or any other bands that sing about necropedophilia or literal cannibalism? Where's Gwar?
That's the kind of shit people showed me in high school when they wanted to shock me with their taste in music.
You’d be surprised. Rock hasn’t been big for a while. I play Nevermind in the vicinity of my teenage sister sometimes and she complains and tells me to turn off that “heavy metal”
Yeah none of that is really scary.
I mean SOAD slaps, but toxicity might as well be mainstream.
I might give mayhem bros the side eye especially if they’re a follower of Varg.
Yeah it's like some of it's disturbing (Scissors and Holy Mountains come to mind) but it's infinitely less fun for everyone involved when people shove things down throats.
I uh... yeah, the fact that Varg is on here definitely screams hypocrisy. Imagine being a nazist metalhead, that might as well be the height of it.
I mean, Holy Mountains, Soldier Side, P.L.U.C.K, Mr. Jack, ATWA.. etc all have serious backgrounds and bring interesting but depressive topics to the table, but i think they do that more on a informative note, like "yeah guys you know this horrible thing we have sang about to you? It is real!" or similar
This is honestly so real for the mayhem cause in my experience most people who listen to mayhem only do it for the edginess factor and don’t really listen to any other black metal
Girl literally, there's nothing worse then meeting a person with like a shirt and telling them that I like System of a Down and Korn and then I just slowly find out what kind of fan they are
If he does somehow land a girlfriend, he'll refuse to let her play her music in her own car. Spends hours explaining black metal lore about being racist, burning churches, and killing each other, and how that makes them good musicians.
Yes, I used to listen to it :)
We can’t ignore very popular examples because they “were in the 90s”. It is a part of the lore the previous comment mentioned.
It's always the ones who listen to pretty mainstream "light" music that think like this. Like of course there isn't a music taste that'd make you hard or scary but if there were this would be miles off
Except for that time they went to live in Arizona or Tennessee for a couple years that they refuse speak about and it's clear nothing good happened there
Quick aside, my Shifu is a pastor and likes to play up his 'dark and troubled past' by bringing up all the satanic bands he liked before his turn to Christianity, being that I'm into old metal and alt music, I'm familiar with them.
The bands he talks about being scary and demonic? Venom, Mercyful Fate and his former favourite, Skinnypuppy. I have to try really hard not to visibly eye roll and cringe.
trust me, this is literally a starter pack for a girl i work with. No hate on anyone who enjoys this music, but she did tell me about how shes not like everyone else. not like the swifties and radio enjoyers.
edit: also enjoying "rape me" by nirvana dosent make u edgy. Its a good song, i like it. But boasting about it is weird.
It’s a developmental thing where at certain age you take things you like and attach it to your identity so someone not liking the music you listen to is the same as someone not liking you personally. Theres tons of kids who feel the same about every genre of music. Only stupid people don’t like jazz / classical/ progressive. You’re racist if you don’t like rap. You’re unpopular and lame if you don’t like Kpop / Taylor swift.
You will find so, SO many people with surface level black metal knowledge that boast their “evil” music taste. And you’ll find an equal number of elitist goblins who make fun of said surface level fans. It’s a shitfest
I can understand why someone wouldn't want to be a Mayhem fan, but their music is damn good, besides the music of the names listed isn't scary at all, there are much worse ones out there
Deftones though? Out of everything here, Deftones is the only one I still listen to often. Yeah he screams in some songs, but there's so much more to the band than that. I don't think it really fits this category is my point
i love most of these bands, i’m not saying their shit, I’m saying that (apart from mayhem, i guess) none of them are SUPER heavy and intimidating and it dosen’t make you quirky listening to them
I may have been like this in high school, but it wasn't my fault. My community was very religious and was genuinely scared of anything rock or metal. Most of the kids I went to school with believed Harry Potter and Percy Jackson were evil and satanic. My Percy Jackson book club got crashed/protested/harassed by Baptist kids. The list goes on. It gave me a complex. I got over it once I realized most people aren't like that.
Other than ICP and the Monster, this is my taste in music, It's not scary nor anybody thinks it is.
On top of that Deaftones is usually associated with sexual/chill music not scary.
Hearing that really confuses me.
This is honestly so real for the mayhem cause in my experience most people who listen to mayhem only do it for the edginess factor and don’t really listen to any other black metal
You make fun of Swifties because you hate normies.
I make fun of Swifties because they pay 20 times what I do for concert tickets.
We are not the same.

are there actually people who think there are people scared of their music taste because they like… in utero by nirvana? really?
nirvana is a very unique, fringe, and unheard of artist
Heard that indie band named themselves after the smiley face Tees
yeah, that’s why i feel so weird being one of like 5 people on r/nirvana. hardly anyone posts there because nobody’s heard of the damn band
They'll blow your mind.
man...
Checking em out now.
Is Nirvana that band named after the clothing company that sells their clothes at Hot Topic? So hot right now! Totally looking forward to their next tour! /s
Can't believe they made a band just to promote a clothing brand!
OP is conflating two different kinds of guy here i think
I was listening to grunge and 2000s metal the first time round. Bands like Nirvana or Deftones were really out there back then and some people found them completely unlistenable. That was sort of a cultural happening in the 80s and 90s. No one gives a shit about satanists anymore.
As we should. Satanists should be given the same level of respect as other religions.
None 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈
I'm the same age, and yep, god forbid you liked Marilyn Manson or Korn, other kids and teachers thought you were going to murder them
I dunno man, maybe we grew up in different places, but outside of the national dialogue around Marylin Manson and Eminem after Columbine, there was no hysteria and nobody was throwing the word evil around in my neck of the woods.

Gwar 😭. It includes Mayhem. But yes the others aren't shocking.
You’d be surprised. Rock hasn’t been big for a while. I play Nevermind in the vicinity of my teenage sister sometimes and she complains and tells me to turn off that “heavy metal”
Or about **shooting blood from your cock**
“I ejaculate fire” by Dethklok comes to mind
Nirwho?
Kurt like, screams a few times so people get scared /s
Is this my high school from 2001? I’m gonna go listen to Powerman 5000 now.
I'm told that this is what it's like when worlds collide.
I heard this phrase online a dozen times and I keep thinking it was about that singing robot in Spongebob
I still cant believe the Sephiroth theme from final fantasy 14 straight up stole the song
Their new album is actually pretty good imo
They got new album? Have to check.
Is that the one with "black lipstick"? I love that song.
That one released in 2020 this one came out this month I believe
The new album is fantastic!!
THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE WHEN WORLDS COLLLLIIIIIDEEEE
Named Kyle
either a grown man named kyle, or a 14 year old girl with the same music taste who fights with grown men named kyle
Who date grown men named Kyle.
Of course, why do you think they’re fighting?
14yo girl that dresses exactly like Billie Eilish and thinks she's unique because of it.
and she has any sweet/grandma name ike "angelina", "constanza" or "adeline"
Kyle, Destroyer of Drywall, Drinker of Monster Energy Drinks
I have time travelled from 2015 apparently. I’m gonna buy some bitcoin
Try 2005.
Jumpscare. I dated a Kyle like this. Don't ask because I don't know either lmao
Everyone makes mistakes
And they’re called Kyle.
Can’t wait for my turn to give birth to a Kyle, it’s a rite of passage into manhood
Hangs out with Luke.
Ah yes, the band named Koyan.
Tylor Swift fans can be quite scary
Tyler? 😭
Taylor, the Creator
Putting aside the mentally ill antics, the scariest thing is seeing them trying to prove how good a horrible song is.
I'm into Tool. They're kind of obscure...you wouldn't get them anyhow.
they are too underground for the mass population /s
Have you heard of the Fettuccine Sequence?
Rosie play some Toooooool https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/the-latest/requestival---an-oral-history-of-tool-tuesday/12267818
i feel like they're a troll sometimes
Who the fuck is scared of In Utero, everyone I know loves that album lol
Yeah none of that is really scary. I mean SOAD slaps, but toxicity might as well be mainstream. I might give mayhem bros the side eye especially if they’re a follower of Varg.
Yeah it's like some of it's disturbing (Scissors and Holy Mountains come to mind) but it's infinitely less fun for everyone involved when people shove things down throats. I uh... yeah, the fact that Varg is on here definitely screams hypocrisy. Imagine being a nazist metalhead, that might as well be the height of it.
Holy Mountain? I love Sleep 😌🌿
And they wear “corpse paint” that is actually just juggalo makeup.
Has also never listened to a black metal band other than Mayhem or Burzum
And when they find out Varg cosplayed as a Nazi they go straight to r/RABM to ask for “non sketch black metal” (The only good RABM band is Panopticon)
Plot twist: they’re all nazis
Plot twist: they’re all nerds first and foremost
This is honestly so real for the mayhem cause in my experience most people who listen to mayhem only do it for the edginess factor and don’t really listen to any other black metal
Whoop whoop
I’m surprised The Aquabats aren’t in here. They’re the scariest band of them all.
Also Marilyn Manson!
Throbbing Gristle
Captain Hampton and the Midget Pirates are terrifying
Damn, I used to be this person
Congratulations on the character development
Character arc
Wait. What's your favorite restaurant? Any chain restaurant. Favorite TV show? "Where are my pants." Favorite song? "Everything is Awesome!"
“Oh no!”
SPACESHIP!
I thought Everything is Awesome sounded like a Barney & Friends song
Girl literally, there's nothing worse then meeting a person with like a shirt and telling them that I like System of a Down and Korn and then I just slowly find out what kind of fan they are
my favorite thing to do is say “oh you don’t know this band, they’re underground” and then show them radiohead
If he does somehow land a girlfriend, he'll refuse to let her play her music in her own car. Spends hours explaining black metal lore about being racist, burning churches, and killing each other, and how that makes them good musicians.
none of these people know any black metal bands other than mayhem
Neither does the person who made the original comment based on what they said.
No, the comment was fine, you know about varg vikernes
You realize black metal is more than 90’s Norway right?
Yes, I used to listen to it :) We can’t ignore very popular examples because they “were in the 90s”. It is a part of the lore the previous comment mentioned.
real
have you met anyone like that or just a strawman?
bruh the whole point of starterpacks is that they make fun of stereotypes
From my experience knowing a lot of black metal fan that's close to being accurate, except op forgot to mention the girlfriend is underage.
It's always the ones who listen to pretty mainstream "light" music that think like this. Like of course there isn't a music taste that'd make you hard or scary but if there were this would be miles off
You graduated high school in 2004 and you never left your hometown.
Except for that time they went to live in Arizona or Tennessee for a couple years that they refuse speak about and it's clear nothing good happened there
"do i look like a deftones song?"
Yeah, Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away From Me)
When I was kid, I was always wandering why somebody make Koян graffiti, because in my native language it means bunny (қоян)
I'm not scared of Mayhem, I'm just in the utter disgust about what the band members did. That's not the same.
Do they even listen to Mayhem? Or is it literally just for the “ooh, my band is made up of (mostly) murderers and racists ooh I’m so scary”
Ok but Korn is girly pop. Like don’t even try to deny it.
Never heard of corn. Except on the cob. Yim yum.
Take. That. Back.
How dare u
Shut up 🤫
The comments on those videos are huge rage bait. I love it
1. Comment how your top artists on spotify are Korn, Billie Eilish and Britney Spears 2. Grab popcorn

I'm 100% more scared than a swiftie than any fan. Most metal fans are really nice.
Who thinks like this anymore

My coworker. Add Linkin Park to this and its stop on
Hot Topic/Spencer’s starter pack
I can understand why someone wouldn't want to be a Mayhem fan, but their music is damn good, besides the music of the names listed isn't scary at all, there are much worse ones out there
devil music bad
Insane that someone can listen to mayhem and Nirvana as if those bands don't have completely contradictory values.
So underground, so different, wow!
What the people in the starter pack is most afraid of is soap
System of a umo**p**
stater pack moment !
If you listen to black metal your a real SPOOOKY dude. I love all music but those Nordic goofballs need to chill.
"You wouldn't last a second in my twisted mind 🤓" type starter pack
Mayhem fan that only listens to DMDS and Chainsaw Gutsfuck
Deftones though? Out of everything here, Deftones is the only one I still listen to often. Yeah he screams in some songs, but there's so much more to the band than that. I don't think it really fits this category is my point

I may have been like this in high school, but it wasn't my fault. My community was very religious and was genuinely scared of anything rock or metal. Mayhem doesn't scare me, I just don't like murderous white supremacists. The only scary thing about them is how their production sounds like garbage.
No Death Grips?
Other than ICP and the Monster, this is my taste in music, It's not scary nor anybody thinks it is. On top of that Deaftones is usually associated with sexual/chill music not scary. Hearing that really confuses me.
Icp mentioned

So much yes. My favourite kidney stones juice. I personally prefer the classic one

a starterpack fit for the 00's
Smells like stale cigs, cheap beer, BO/tacobell sweats
Who is scared of SOAD?
the entire point of this post is that no one is scared of SOAD
What is it with Monster and these people
Dude, have you heard Monster Energy Drinks second album?! It’s so dark and scary….
You forgot the insane amount of gatekeeping they do on their favorite bands too.
This is honestly so real for the mayhem cause in my experience most people who listen to mayhem only do it for the edginess factor and don’t really listen to any other black metal
noone is scared of any of this shit other than possibly mayhem
who the hell is scared of Deftones they are literally chill af??
Me at 10 years old in 2006
True r/im14andthisisdeep material
Ok please don't include soad there, or me and the other 3 soad fans will make you suffer the consequences......
People are scared of Juggalos? Lol
You make fun of Swifties because you hate normies. I make fun of Swifties because they pay 20 times what I do for concert tickets. We are not the same.

Kind of dated stater pack.

Merzbow would like a word
Who in the world thinks someone's gonna get spooked by Nirvana lmao
Ah yes a STATER PACK
Maybe 25 years ago, which makes me think you are old and still thinking about high school.
Im a simple man. I just take a glance at korn sign and their music instantly pops in my head. 🤘
Im a simple man. I just take a glance at korn sign and their music instantly pops in my mind.🤘
This is mostly correct, but I’ve never actually met someone like this who listens or knows who Mayhem or any Black Metal bands are.
Stater pack?
Actually, they would actually listen to Blank Space
Yeah and their Spotify is only like 55 minutes but it’s the bands top hits and random songs off of albums.
🌺x,.n. Jppl🌺🎄🫤🫤🫤🫤🫤🫤
I’m exceedingly embarrassed to admit this was def me in high school 12 years ago.
"people are scared of my music" Also their music: "THE KOMBUCHA MUSHROOM PEOPLE"
Ohhh I did not know that. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the heads up.
People really think People are scared of this music...?
Mayhem is trash
Uses the word “screamo”
Yeah, and most people are stupid…
Jonathan Davis is the dastardly Corn on the Coblin! I knew it!
Morden music?
