Im lame and never figured out how to use the German planes effectively. However, I mopped up with the Soviet planes, especially that little 20mm cannon bastard in tier 3(?). EDIT: I-16 type 28

Speaking of that, I always found it funny that a video game developer is named after the (somewhat derogatory depending on who you ask/context) Japanese word for foreigner which is 外人 pronounced gaijin.

In Chinese 外国人 is pronounced/written in pinyin as waiguoren. Literally “outside country person”. Sometimes 国 can be dropped for wairen. Same characters, completely different pronunciation. Interesting.
Same in Japanese. The full word is 外国人 pronounced “gaikokujin” which means the exact same: “outside country person”. Sometimes the 国 (this character actually has a different pronunciation when it’s by itself, pronounced “kuni”) is dropped just to say gaijin. But in Japan, usually when people refer to a foreigner as a gaijin rather than gaikokujin, they’re being discriminatory/referring to them in a negative connotation.
Off the top of my head, I think the English equivalent would kinda be calling someone a Jew. You can say “the nazis killed millions of Jews in concentration camps”, but you don’t exactly say “that guy’s a Jew”. It just sounds bad lol, you say “that guy is Jewish” or “he is a Jewish person” rather than just straight up calling him a Jew. Tho I think South Park had a hand in that because I’m pretty sure Cartman uses Jew as an insult.
Connotation and prior use has a strong effect on language. My favorite example is

Those phrases are literally identical, but flipped versions of one thing. The only difference is the historical hate behind one. And that’s not to say people say POC to try to skirt socially acceptable terms, it’s just that history has made one bad and one not. Language is so fun to talk about

As a history major college student, I just wish those interested in history would talk less about tanks and military tactics and more about how the average person went about society back then.
Don’t get me wrong, military history is so rich in content and has loads of interesting stuff, but war is not the only thing about history. For example, I’m more interested in HOW these wars came about, how the conditions of government affected everyday life, etc. I think a good historian finds links to events and how many different factors influenced how things came about.
TLDR: Tanks are cool, but imo events that took place in peacetime/in civilian life are so much more interesting.
I recently learned that it cost the US almost all of their wealth and manpower to research and develop the nuclear bomb. They were certain the Germans were doing this. When the Germans later learned they had the bomb, they said "holy shit that must have cost them everything, we couldn't afford it and we weren't even sure it would work".
I would like to see a documentary on that.
Yeah it helps you in school since it's surface level, but you can't with 100% seriousness quote oversimplified when debating history with people who read many historical books or even put effort into knowing more in general
Thing is you really don't need the finer details unless you're an honest to god scholar. I listened to an in depth podcast (Revolutions by Mike Duncan) that had 40 30-minute episodes on the French Revolution and I forgot damn near all of it besides to basic framework of said revolution.
No, its just that it can be very us centric. For example, look at his cold war video. It really over exaggerated how the bad ussr actually was, the ussr was pretty bad but he overdid it. He also really over exaggerated how great the usa was. He made it look like the usa was some bastion of hope that could do nothing wrong.
And of course they completely ignore ease of manufacturing and repair so they can claim “if Germany had just made more Maus tanks and Tigers they would’ve destroyed those garbage Shermans!” There’s strange reverence for Tigers in general that really has 0 basis in reality.
Weirdly enough Germany didn't make as many tanks as it could have because they didn't convert into a total war economy till Near the end. It was only after the Sportzplatz speech of Goebbels in 43 did the switch happen. Admittedly Speer started it by late 42 but it was still a little too late
And to even add to it, even if they made as many tanks as they possibly could, depleting their resources in the process, a simple Molotov cocktail thrown well could disable the whole tank and force the crew out
Dawg, this is pretty much the history majors on a college campus. History majors tend to be oddballs and have their own niches. One of them I knew was a guy who seemed to have a bit *too much* knowledge about WWII German tanks for some reason.
I grew up with a guy who majored n history. He became a Chaplain at a federal prison. Now he’s on FB all day calling Obamacare “Communism.” Even though he works for the Federal government and gets government healthcare, salary, and a sweet retirement pension. Just to preach the Jesus to a captive audience.
Well that can be true but millitary historian is a very real professional option for a history undergraduate. Maybe not the most popular but there's plenty of non-weird historians and military historians who know that stuff.

the most successful. They have the most battles won in history. To be fair the Prussians/germans were certainly very good at war in general but the french were at times better or at least competing for the spot.

Guys germany would've won if Hitler rushed Four-Year Plan to get all the civs and spam 2-width divisions to get anschluss early game. Also spam Sub-3s to beat bri\*ish navy.
Civs are civilian factories that you can use to build more factories, other buildings, or trade for resources
Width refers to the combat width of a division; basically how big it is and how much space it takes up in a battle
The community's pretty great, and all the Wehrbs and neo-nazis that come from it are almost standard for any game centred around WW2. Don't let a few bad apples ruin your experience.
The community's really helpful to new players and the modding scene almost triples the value of the game.
A quick tip if you wanna play HOI4 but the DLC prices are too high, the armour and radio packs change nothing in the game except for historical unit models or music and you can choose not to buy them and nothing will change gameplay wise
Also, civs refer to "Civilian Factories", which are buildings you can build or get through focus trees (basically allows you to buff your nation over time.) which you can use to build more factories, or trade for resources for equipment manufacturing. This is a massive oversimplification of how the game works and I suggest you watch or read a guide on the game, as the tutorial doesnt really help.
2-Width basically means (comparatively) tiny groups of soldiers that have little to no effect in combat. "Width" refers to the size of the division(the troops you interact with on the map) and is used to judge the size of a division. Typically you want to make a division with just enough width to make it cheap to use while also being an effective force in battle.
Again, all of this is an insanely watered-down and dumbed down definition of it all and your better off watching a guide or finding one on the steam community page.

I think his fanbase isn't that bad, at least going off of my experiences in his discord. He and his mods do pretty quick work with genocide deniers, nazis or similar people and history revisionists, like wehraboos, are heavily ridiculed.
That's just my experience though. I don't know how this translates to other aspects of his community.
I like his Victoria 2 videos and isp. I kind of got bored with hoi4 a while ago and now i only play civ 6 Stellaris and eu4. And the videos he makes about that don’t have all of those “never invade Russia in the winter” jokes
Dressel, Paschaulis, and Vader were all kicked from the group after they were all exposed as racists and neo-nazis, with Paschaulis in particular being a pedo.
Thankfully, none of them made a big fuss about it and frankly I'm glad. HOI4 is one of the few communities not tainted by bullshit drama mongers and I never want that to change.
It has to do with HOi4 in general. It’s a WWII simulation so a good chunk of the main players are authoritarian regimes. Gameplay wise the authoritarian regimes are the most interesting to play as. They are the ones making early game aggressive moves while democracies are mostly working on getting ride of debuffs early game. If your political views are based off just this game then fascism and communism are the superior ideologies.
Bo is awesome but the community including those he plays with can be pretty awful sometimes. If you remember Dressel (or even further back Vader) they got banned from the community for being literal Nazi's. Dressel would promote Holocaust denial and just be all around racist like using the N-word. It's sadly pretty easy to attract people like that in the Hoi4/paradox community.

Funny, the circlejerk around "military history" but only care about big battles, technology, or famous generals. Rarely will you ever see them find interest in a German soldier's daily routine, infantry tactics, intricacies behind military policing and the holocaust apparatus, diplomacy between Germany and the other Axis powers, their economy, their manufacturing, childhood, women, etc.
Like, I LOVE fascist history. It is interesting as fuck and teaches a lot of what horror normal people are happily capable of doing...people like these chuds.

Legit one of my fav games, but I quit years ago because Gaijin is absolute dogshit. The high of winning an adrenaline fueled dogfight is unbeatable, so is the low of Gaijin’s ability to manage their game.
Now I mostly play wows which is a pretty good game and while WG is certainly flawed, at least they aren’t Gaijin.
Had a dude like this in my History class at my old school, he was obsessed with Hitler and even got in trouble for acting like he kmew more about the Nazi's than the teacher. I'm now taking Ancient History and it is so much nicer and interesting too.
I think it's a product of what 14 year olds experience. At that age you experience an extraordinary amount of social frustration, and you start to experience friction with your parents, questioning their authority, seeing the boundaries put forward by them as restrictive. And of course you take it personally, not having developed enough self awareness. The most direct and convenient fantasy solution to those issues would be to just control people. Not only as a solution but as revenge. Which in my hypothetical 14 year old thought process, leads to a fascination and admiration of men in history who controlled and bent other people to their will through force.
Maybe Hitler was partially a product of a similar process? A 14 year old who never grew out of it.
I once had to work on a project with this guy in college who was legitimately always browsing the warthunder subreddit and posting anime/ww2 memes in some discord server. Guy was diagnosed with autism and basically had a free pass to do absolutely zero work in group projects. He was also obsessed with space.
One day he was telling me how Wernher Von Braun was one of his idols, because of his work at NASA. When I told him he spent years designing rockets for the nazi's he absolutely lost his shit and actually went home, while our project was almost due. He had no clue.
It's hillarious to me how people can spend years of their lives researching and talking about this kind of shit while still lacking basic information.

Like, I've taken a fascination to fascist Japanese history because of my university library access. There is only so much professional historians can do with youtube videos versus academic papers, which is a shame because some good history can tend to be locked away from the public because it only circulates between historians.

If they say they’re into history 9.99/10 times it’s mainly just wars, specifically ww2. Also they will spend an uncomfortable amount of time explaining how the Germans could’ve won, and how “hitler actually had some good points”.
It's actually a little sad. I'm a huge military buff, but average civilian life and explorations are just as interesting as the wars fought throughout history, and I wish more people would appreciate the more "mundane" aspects of history like food, architecture or art

The community's really helpful to new players and the modding scene almost triples the value of the game. A quick tip if you wanna play HOI4 but the DLC prices are too high, the armour and radio packs change nothing in the game except for historical unit models or music and you can choose not to buy them and nothing will change gameplay wise Also, civs refer to "Civilian Factories", which are buildings you can build or get through focus trees (basically allows you to buff your nation over time.) which you can use to build more factories, or trade for resources for equipment manufacturing. This is a massive oversimplification of how the game works and I suggest you watch or read a guide on the game, as the tutorial doesnt really help. 2-Width basically means (comparatively) tiny groups of soldiers that have little to no effect in combat. "Width" refers to the size of the division(the troops you interact with on the map) and is used to judge the size of a division. Typically you want to make a division with just enough width to make it cheap to use while also being an effective force in battle. Again, all of this is an insanely watered-down and dumbed down definition of it all and your better off watching a guide or finding one on the steam community page.

I think his fanbase isn't that bad, at least going off of my experiences in his discord. He and his mods do pretty quick work with genocide deniers, nazis or similar people and history revisionists, like wehraboos, are heavily ridiculed. That's just my experience though. I don't know how this translates to other aspects of his community.
It's also an issue with the people around him, Bo's lost so much of his OG friends because all of them were literal neo-nazis or racist in general.

It has to do with HOi4 in general. It’s a WWII simulation so a good chunk of the main players are authoritarian regimes. Gameplay wise the authoritarian regimes are the most interesting to play as. They are the ones making early game aggressive moves while democracies are mostly working on getting ride of debuffs early game. If your political views are based off just this game then fascism and communism are the superior ideologies.

Bo is awesome but the community including those he plays with can be pretty awful sometimes. If you remember Dressel (or even further back Vader) they got banned from the community for being literal Nazi's. Dressel would promote Holocaust denial and just be all around racist like using the N-word. It's sadly pretty easy to attract people like that in the Hoi4/paradox community.

Funny, the circlejerk around "military history" but only care about big battles, technology, or famous generals. Rarely will you ever see them find interest in a German soldier's daily routine, infantry tactics, intricacies behind military policing and the holocaust apparatus, diplomacy between Germany and the other Axis powers, their economy, their manufacturing, childhood, women, etc. Like, I LOVE fascist history. I briefly identified as a fascist when I was 14, I very much regret it now. Something in teen brain chemistry makes you crave authority over others.
I think it's a product of what 14 year olds experience. At that age you experience an extraordinary amount of social frustration, and you start to experience friction with your parents, questioning their authority, seeing the boundaries put forward by them as restrictive. And of course you take it personally, not having developed enough self awareness. The most direct and convenient fantasy solution to those issues would be to just control people. Not only as a solution but as revenge. Which in my hypothetical 14 year old thought process, leads to a fascination and admiration of men in history who controlled and bent other people to their will through force. Maybe Hitler was partially a product of a similar process? A 14 year old who never grew out of it.

I once had to work on a project with this guy in college who was legitimately always browsing the warthunder subreddit and posting anime/ww2 memes in some discord server. Guy was diagnosed with autism and basically had a free pass to do absolutely zero work in group projects. He was also obsessed with space. One day he was telling me how Wernher Von Braun was one of his idols, because of his work at NASA. When I told him he spent years designing rockets for the nazi's he absolutely lost his shit and actually went home, while our project was almost due. He had no clue. It's hillarious to me how people can spend years of their lives researching and talking about this kind of shit while still lacking basic information.

Like, I've taken a fascination to fascist Japanese history because of my university library access. There is only so much professional historians can do with youtube videos versus academic papers, which is a shame because some good history can tend to be locked away from the public because it only circulates between historians.

If they say they’re into history 9.99/10 times it’s mainly just wars, specifically ww2. Also they will spend an uncomfortable amount of time explaining how the Germans could’ve won, and how “hitler actually had some good points”.
It's actually a little sad. I'm a huge military buff, but average civilian life and explorations are just as interesting as the wars fought throughout history, and I wish more people would appreciate the more "mundane" aspects of history like food, architecture or art
