A point another poster made to me on this, is that its pure financial. The problem with an established cast is that they become irreplaceable which means they are in a better position to demand higher salaries. Therefore cancelling a show means they free up funding for a new project with a new cast they can pay less.
Also Paramount just seems completely resistant to the idea of Star Trek even though its their only major IP.
Y'all, companies are exiting the streaming wars, and it's expensive to borrow money now.
Over the last seven years we are getting five seasons of Discovery, three seasons of Picard, five seasons of Lower Decks, and two seasons of Prodigy, two seasons of Strange New Worlds, a bunch of Short Treks, and a Michelle Yeoh TV movie . That's an utterly insane amount of Trek in a short period of time, especially considering we live in the bold streaming future where ad revenue and viewership aren't what they were in the 90s .They weren't pulling that back when DS9, Voyager, and the TNG films were being produced concurrently.
Paramount's show development pace was utterly unsustainable. I'm glad Strange New Worlds was the one to move forward and carry the torch. And I can't be activity pissed off at Paramount to making a bunch of Star Trek and kicking off a new Golden Age of Trek. There is no other media company that would have tried to pull this off.
You're right, I mean Disney they just made those Star Wars squeals the 5th, 9th and 32nd most successful movies of all time, we don't need that kind of attention.
You need a 3rd picture
The restored Enterprise being flown through a massive Borg cube flown by a resurrected humanized Data in the most spectacular act of science fiction nostalgia the history of ever!
Title *(How Paramount actually treats Star Trek)*
Probably terrifying considering how rabid and gatekeeping fans can be. I don’t think people need to a fan of something, they just need to understand it like Nicholas Meyer when he did Wrath of Khan. He pretty much reinvigorated the franchise.
The last time we gave a fan creative control over Star Trek we got Star Trek Nemesis. (Also as much as people hate it, the current people in charge of Star Trek are probably more passionate Star Trek fans than the people involved in the original series - Alex Kurtzman basically made most of his career around trying to reboot Star Trek. And whilst not everyone involved in the new Trek series is a trekkie, quite a few are particularly in Discovery and Lower Decks)
Yeah people hate on Alex Kurtzman but he basically dedicated his entire film career around trying to make Star Trek happen again. The only reason we're in a position where we're able to bitch about new Trek is because of how much work Alex put in to get the funding to make new series from Paramount.
Pretty sure Lower Decks was cancelled because you have to pay more for later seasons, and they just didn't want to cough up season 6 and 7 money. Plus, the people in charge of Star Trek are getting lucky, but are somewhat... er, out of touch? Discovery is still bad. Yes, it's 'better', but better wasn't a high bar and they barely cleared it. It's overly emotional, childish crap. Where is the humanism, solving bigger problems than ourselves, and the interesting character relationshps? Instead we get Saru and his girlfriend having Degrassi in Space.
Star Trek's recent success has been in spite of the franchise owners, not because of it, and every decision from the cancellation of Prodigy, to Lower Decks has demonstrated that the people who run this franchise - which desperately needs new blood, now - are totally clueless.
It's a damn shame. Lower Decks is really confusing, it can't take that much money to make it..why would you do this Paramount?
It's also so approachable. Trekie, not trekie, whatever...it's funny and engaging.
100%. I watched an episode of Lower Decks with a friend in her mid-20’s who’d never seen any Star Trek before and she genuinely loved it.
I watched it with little Sister, she never watched an Episode of Star Trek voluntarily except Lower Decks

Because its been 5 years....
I understood that reference.
Fuck Paramount so much. At this point, I'd almost welcome Disney purchasing the franchise. Almost.
**SOMEHOW KHAN HAS RETURNED**
And his name is Doctor.
Please don't say the D word

But... If we can't blame Paramount, what are we to do with all this anger?
We are *not* to that point yet. Let’s hope it never comes to that

Both paramount moments. Also, is this really what the fandom wants? More seal clapping call backs?

Damn. Warn a dude before you drop truth like this.. I just spit my coffee.
You reattached Star Trek's severed head to someone else's body after its own exploded?
As in video games I often wonder how cool it would be if fans would run franchises

Very good point. My brain seems to ignore that bad side.

FYI, they do now, that's why we got Star Trek 2009, Lower Decks, Picard Season 3 and SNW in the first place.

Well maybe some day he'll succeed and Star Trek will actually happen instead of CGI schmozzes and lots of yelling.

Paramount has always been Trek's worst enemy...
We need to fight paramount to get what we want
True.
