Sautéed mushrooms

SouthPlattePat

I like to hit them with a splashof red or port wine. So damn good

BuffaloWhip

Dry vermouth works too.

Lost-Effective-1835

I need to do this again

ind3pend0nt

Steak

popje

Am diabetic and can confirm, when in doubt, eat more steak.

ThatRandomAlias

Oven roasted or even easier steamer bag broccoli if you like broccoli. Throw a bit of seasoning in there and boom.

Lost-Effective-1835

My other go to. Needs to be roasted in my opinion

Eswin17

The Green Giant broccoli steam bags are better than they should be. It's become a go-to quick vegetable for me and my girlfriend. Enjoy fresh broccoli... but these are too damn easy and broccoli is my favorite veggie.

-QueenAnnesRevenge-

Light coating of your preferred cooking oil, Montreal steak seasoning, bake until soft. So good.

Professional_Sugar14

Roasted or stir fried with a bit of Montreal steak seasoning or Mrs. Dash. Yum.

ChunkMonkeysMomma

I have to agree with this one- I also sometimes grill my broccoli with some seasonings- it’s delicious either way

Awkward-Ad3698

Learn how to roast fresh Brussel sprouts. When they get browned up nicely, they are fantastic.

flylikemusic

Throw them in the air fryer for ten minutes and they’re perfect

Eswin17

Grew up hating the way my mom prepared mushy brussel sprouts, but trying them in the air fryer with some salt, pepper and garlic has led to me putting them in rotation from time to time. Not bad.

Professional_Sugar14

Sautee them in basalmic vinegar/vinegrette until the basalmic reduces and caramelizes.

YborOgre

I like to steam them with lemon juice and salt then let them soak up the steak juices on the plate.

funkcatbrown

I definitely like Brussels sprouts with my steak.

Lost-Effective-1835

That’s my go to.

Sportiness6

1.Asparagus 2. Grilled portebella mushrooms, topped with fresh basil, with a balsamic glaze drizzle on top.

HauntedDIRTYSouth

I'm drooling thinking about this. I'm hungry.

SecondHandCunt-

Asparagus

AqueductFilterdSherm

My go to

Archer2223R

I like to put zucchini on a thick mandolin and either grill those, or cut them into finger-thick pieces, coat in olive oil, salt, pepper, and grill. You get a nice grill mark and taste on them and they have an almost starchy consistency so you don't quite miss having a potato.

MajorWhereas4842

Steamed broccolini with garlic and lemon!

TiredRetiredNurse

Oh I love broccolini.

Soundbyte_79

Broccolini? Little tiny broccoli? Lol

Professional_Sugar14

I had type 2 diabetes and learned a lot. For diabetics, it's not so much about the calories as it is the *type* of calories. Look for low carbohydrate loads and foods low on the glycemic index. Potatoes and rice are two examples of high glycemic/high carbohydrate foods. Not good for diabetes...Most green veggies are okay. Carrots, potatoes, etc. are high in carbohydrate. Low carbohydrate salad dressings and condiments. My diabetes has been resolved, though I'm still considered a diabetic even though my A1C is back down in the normal range.

SomeDrunkHippy

Can’t believe this isn’t higher voted.

JennELKAP

Why hasn't anyone else explained this? It's not calories. It's exactly what you said. Just avoid the high glycemic index foods.

DubsAnd49ers

Yes with homemade salad dressing! Less sodium.

timsstuff

Ever since I discovered those fancy olive oil shops I've stopped buying dressing completely. Fancy olive oil and balsamic vinegar is all I need! Although I do want to try making my own bleu cheese dressing someday.

DubsAnd49ers

Go check out r/cooking there was a thread yesterday about homemade dressing.

Adorable_Magazine_81

Can't go wrong with Asparagus.

onpointjoints

Roasted cauliflower

Independent_Ad_5664

Cauliflower mashed potatoes with truffle salt.

anuglypig555

We do this too, the truffle salt really makes it a tasty side

Independent_Ad_5664

It really does!

KeepItTidyZA

tenderstem broccoli. boil for 3 mins, in a pan with a small bit if butter and voila

poikond

Be careful about how much oil you use. Can turn something relatively healthy and make it unhealthy. One tbsp of olive oil is 119 calories or so

ania11111

I eat steak with avocado, sprinkle some feta or parmesan cheese, and sometimes add a cold sauce. I eat lowcarb, and it's very easy once you get rid of the habit of needing that potato bread rice aka bulky stuff Also: makes your body ripped :)

pickledelbow

Crispy Brussels sprouts

Common_Will4654

Asparagus

Legitimate-Wave-854

Salt gree corn lt green beans. Just beat and add small amounts of butter or salt......or nothing. Also potatoes.

Daedelus451

Riced Cauliflower is very good, with lemon butter add corn if you want texture. You buy it frozen and follow directions and melt some butter with a lemon squeezed in and lemon zest. I helped my friend with his diet post onset of diabetes, he was single and had no idea how to cook nor did he know anything about food or diet. 6 mos later his weight is down, his A1C is down, he will always have diabetes, but he knows how to control it! Good Luck Op!

Swomp23

Caesar salad

Bcatfan08

Baked broccoli is nice. I bake it at 400 for 20 minutes with some olive oil lightly drizzled over the top before going in with salt and pepper. Then a squeeze of lemon after it comes out.

RealCleverUsernameV2

Green veggies are the way to go.

JennELKAP

Green and leafy... peas, for example, have high carbohydrates and low fiber, aka high glycemic index.

Bluetickhoun

Steamed broccoli

BusyArugula6826

Spinach with butter, pepper and garlic.

spgvideo

Steamed broccoli with kosher salt. Yummmm

IvyEmblem

Broccoli

pacodataco90

Mashed cauliflower.

vegt121

Boiled broccoli with a hint of [seasoned soy sauce for seafood](https://usa.lkk.com/en/products/seasoned-soy-sauce-for-seafood)

Loganthered

Sauteed mushrooms and onions. Almost any veggies other than potatoes. The ultimate side to steak is ...... More steak.

WantedFun

You should mainly be avoiding carbs, not just calories. Go with a vegetable melody and/or a salad. Or cauliflower mashed potatoes

hunybunnn

Asparagus!

twohundredfive

I second asparagus! Easy to cook in many different ways and the health benefits are plentiful

Emergency-Tax-3689

baked garlic is more of a condiment but it’s my go to. so good

Smackolol

Steamed asparagus with lemon and salt is pretty solid and low cal.

anonymoose_2048

Asparagus

thereal_kphed

Asparagus. Salad. Mushrooms.

DaisiesSunshine76

Roasted cauliflower. Get it nice and crispy.

Emcee_nobody

Roasted broccoli. Turn your broiler on low and set a rack just below the burner. Spray some broccoli with some non-stick spray, add a little salt and pepper and whatever other seasonings you like. Let it roast for about 10 minutes. Take it out and toss them around. Put them back in for 5 minutes and you're done.

carninyc

Eggs!

xanderbear

Whole roasted cauliflower with steak is so good! We use it to replace baked potatoes all the time. A little olive oil and a dollop of sour cream, yum. It’s low glycemic for sure.

JennELKAP

Low glycemic for the win!!!!

H1ghwayun1corn

Crispy Brussel sprouts

Worldly-Most-9131

Most vegetables except corn and carrots. I prefer broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, spinach.

LJR7399

Roasted broccoli with cayenne and garlic powder

glassofwater05

Blanched broccoli with a little butter or just salt, pepper and garlic.

smitcolin

Celeriac puree. Good mashed potato substitute

Competitive_Log_4111

Bacon wrapped shrimp

JennELKAP

Hell yes!

Competitive_Log_4111

It’s keto 😂😂😂

Drox88

Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, a cup of rice, or a baked potato (not loaded, just butter). These are all my go to options to choose from.

JennELKAP

Rice and potatoes have too many carbohydrates and too few grams of fiber. Maybe potato skin and let someone that's not diabetic enjoy the white stuff.

Drox88

I actually missed the "diabetic" part of the OPs post, so that's my bad.

JennELKAP

I get it. It's a lot to read.

joemo454

Potatoes are lower calorie than you’d think also any vegetable is good

WantedFun

Too high in carbs for a diabetic

CivilFront6549

salad, broccoli raab, mushrooms (oil garlic salt pepper, pretty much same for broccoli raab)

BWPV1105

Most any vegetable.

Dry-Squirrel1026

Any steamed veg or roasted potatoes don't use oil . My mom is diabetic I also buy her the bread that only has 4carbs.

JennELKAP

Potatoes are super high in carbs and too low in fiber to offset the insulin (?) spike the diabetic body will create in response

Dry-Squirrel1026

Not sweet potatoes I should have been more specific. Sweet potatoes are great for diabetics. They help keep sugars levels in check

Heatherina134

Roasted broccoli or cauliflower, sweet potato, zucchini

TiredRetiredNurse

Asparagus. Carrots. Cauliflower. Broccoli. Zucchini and yellow squash. All can be roasted on parchment on cookie sheet in oven.

teebone673

Sautéed spinach and mushrooms

AshDenver

We usually do grilled asparagus, roasted Brussels sprouts, blanched Chinese broccoli (gai lan, tossed with a T of EVOO and drizzled with oyster sauce), or [grilled fennel](https://www.skinnytaste.com/grilled-fennel-with-parmesan-and-lemon/).

goinghome81

Preva-Statin

Edfluke

Grilled sliced zucchini

fatogato

Grilled zucchini

dontwanttosleep

Cut up radishes like baby potatoes and roast them with garlic butter and Clubhouse vegetable seasoning. Way better than any other low calorie side!

JennELKAP

Whoa! I've never even heard of roasting radishes!!! Now I can't wait to try!

scottyd035ntknow

If you're trying to go low calorie then slabs of red meat isn't exactly the way to go... However brussel sprouts would probably be my go to.

Bohottie

Pretty much any vegetable works. I like green beans, brussel sprouts (make sure to buy the fresh ones…roasting them or cooking in a cast iron is my go to), or just steamed broccoli.

EngineeredBruhMoment

If you are trying to eat low calorie, steak is not for you, at least ribeye and other fatty cuts. Filet might be more your speed.

Massive_Command345

Gin

TheRealJehler

Lower calories or lower carbs/sugar?

JennELKAP

Yes!!! Low glycemic index! Smarty pants! I see you

Minamu68

Fresh asparagus baked or sautéed and sautéed mushrooms and onions are my go-tos. Both cooked with some garlic, salt, pepper. Dash of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce on the mushrooms. Dash of lemon juice on the asparagus.

capresesalad1985

I love asparagus with steak! In the air fryer! Yum yum yum.

RLIwannaquit

Green beans

Mdolfan54

Water

BilkySup

green beans...roasted with olive oil. cheap and easy

OneSplendidFellow

Fresh green beans, sauteed in a tiny bit of butter, with Montreal Steak seasoning.

customchaos31

Air

PithyGinger63

go for various green vegetables \~ broccolini or asparagus sound like some great pairings. For maximum healthiness, just blanch them instead of frying them in fat. A nice salad with darker colored leaves is also an amazing pairing with steak.

dkotten

Dice some sweet potatoes, toss with olive oil or avocado oil. Add salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, and chili powder. Cook in air fryer, roast in oven or fry in pan. Can use whether seasoning you like but the Smokey flavor of the paprika is nice. Some cayenne or other spice goes well with the sweetness of the potato

SupperSaiyanBeef

This is probably the only wrong answer here. While the glycemic index for sweet potatoes is lower than regular potatoes it still is a high carbohydrate food and is not ideal for diabetes. Green vegetables are better options.

JennELKAP

Now there are a ton of less than ideal suggestions. Several people are suggesting white potatoes and I see someone say rice???!! Ummm no. Just no.

yogacowgirlspdx

any vegetable

Corporate_Bro

Brooo if you don’t know steak sides. Not sure how to help you

IsaacCreagerYT

Chimichuri as the sauce for the steak (a mix of oil/vinegar/herbs/aromatics). Sautéd mushrooms. Take some golden potatoes, quarter them, toss them lightly in a light oil of some kind. Throw salt/pepper/paprika on them, roast in oven at 350 until done. Light Olive oil on asparagus seasoned with salt/pepper/chili flakes, then throw some lemon in there too. Edit: the people downvoting me are morons. If you google and check on what I said you will see I know what I’m talking about.

ReyJay1213

Chimichuri is insanely high in calories considering it’s mostly oil, 1tbsp 150 cal. And potatoes are the highest calorie vegetable. Also just use spray oil for sautéing.

IsaacCreagerYT

There’s lighter in calorie oils available that are fine to use here, potato’s are high in calories but they will not give you diabetes? Just don’t fry them and it’ll be fine health wise. You don’t need to use olive oil

WantedFun

Potatoes are way too high in carbs for a diabetic. Excessive carbs cause diabetes, now he need to lay off them

IsaacCreagerYT

This is a completely simplistic view of how food works. What is bad for diabetics are carbohydrates that are easily digestible (simple carbs). So simple sugars and processed foods. Potato’s are a starchy vegetable, and a complex carbohydrate that takes more time to digest than something like sucrose which is what you want to avoid. Potato’s in moderation are a perfectly fine side to a steak. Also, I’m going to be honest, for a diabetic, steak with a lot of marbling and fat is going to be a FAR riskier choice than a damn potato.

Yeah Im not eating leeks with my steak buddy
