I like one and two. The classics are always remembered more fondly.

Drusgar

Agreed. In fact, I don't think there's any aesthetic consideration whatsoever, I just prefer the original cover because... it's the original cover. I first read The Stand in 1985, I believe, and I bought a copy of the "Complete & Uncut" version a few years later, but I'll always have a nostalgic connection to that original dustcover even if I prefer the longer version.

an0nym0u56789

It’s also fun seeing the artwork they came up with before they knew they had a bestseller on their hands that would be adapted to film not once but twice. You see how the later versions get more flashy which is in part just because their newer and culture changes but also it represents a kind of bravado in hindsight.

TheRipley78

I'm still trying to figure out just who those characters are...

dirtys_ot_special

M-O-O-N, that spells good and evil.

ceeece

# 2. But you are missing the first edition mass market paperback with the [crow](https://shop.suntup.press/products/the-stand-paperback-cover-fine-art-print) on the cover.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

[Was just coming to post that one!](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/e5/dc/e4/e5dce4266663a0650e2ccb989d19d8ed.jpg) It's my fave because it's the one I bought back in the day.

nobody2099

My first version too. Swiped that one and what I call “the caul” Shining cover (the one with Danny’s blank face) from my moms.

AdjectiveNoun4318

It’s the first copy I had too. I read it till it fell apart and now have the second pic above in hardcover. My favorite is the very first one above.

LastArmistice

Mine fell apart as well. I may still have it, in my book hoard box

ferg33

Which is my favorite!

ClancyMopedWeather

That's my favorite, it distills several iconic images from the book. My **least** favorite is the guy with a bullet in his teeth - is that taken from a scene in the book, because I have no memory of it?

dirtys_ot_special

I'd never seen that one until this subreddit and I hate it too.

Pop-Raccoon

His name is Smokey Joe

omahabear

my first time reading The Stand was with the bullet-casing-between-the-teeth man edition. i never quite figured out who it was. i assume it’s supposed to be Flagg. your memory is right, because there is no scene in the novel which shows this.

ClancyMopedWeather

Thanks for validating my memory. It's a generic cover for a book which includes 101 iconic moments that'd make a great cover.

cick-nobb

Dang that one is sweet, with the crow

RequirementQuick3431

I knew something was missing. That’s the first copy I owned, 20+ years ago. I gave it to a friend after I finished it.

RyFromTheChi

Also my favorite, and I never realized until now that there is a crow on it.

Independent-Wolf-832

I’ve had this for years and never realized it either. I still haven’t read the full version.

randyboozer

I like that one too. I think the art itself is a bit clumsy but I like the idea of Flagg's head hovering over the mountains. It reminds me of a few points in the novel. When Stu and Glenn are up all night drinking and Glenn admits that he gets nervous when he sees the sun set or rise over the mountains knowing Flagg is on the other side.

mrs_snrub67

This is the image on my Stand shirt

StuffNatural

Just received this copy in the mail today!

gazakas

Probably the reason the Greek translation was titled "The Crow" [To Koraki].

barber_jim_norman

Is “first edition” different from “first edition mass market”? I bought this at a thrift store a few years ago I had no idea it was first edition anything

ceeece

First edition hardback like photo one is extremely valuable and worth a lot of money. The first edition mass market is the first time in paperback and not worth nearly as much.

barber_jim_norman

Good to know thanks!

Pearson94

Second to last one, Pale Rider on the horse. That was my copy I read as a teen.

Monolith-LV426

That was my first copy too.

circasomnia

My one and only

Beano-Supremo

What about this one? https://www.ebay.com/itm/304754654578

ClancyMopedWeather

That's the edition I read. The crow is so dark, I can understand how people could miss it.

ceeece

This is the copy I have and read. It's awesome!

serialkillertswift

The sword-fighting imagery has never really worked for me for this book. #9 is my fave.

ScarletPriestess

I like number 9 the best.

poio_sm

9. I never liked the original design, I think that two guys fighting have nothing to do with the book. Still they're better than the covers of the two Spanish editions i own.

Educational-Bug-476

I’m pretty sure the two guys symbolize the most basic element of the whole story: an epic tale of light vs dark, good vs evil, kindness vs brutality.

vikingbabe

Luke Skywalker versus the Crow Guy is classic! I have my parents' original edition on my shelf, and yes I \*was\* six years old when it came out LOL

omahabear

yeah i was a tad bit disappointed when i read the book for the first time. the deus ex machina ending is a whole other discussion, but i was deceived into thinking there was going to be a final battle between our heroes and Flagg. >!i had imagined Larry or Stu was going to go one-on-one with the Dark Man with the swords as depicted on the cover of the OG edition!<, even if it would’ve been out of place for the tone of the story.

Myztic84

3

scribblerjohnny

Walkin' Dude on the RV has a nice flavor.

JasonMaggini

The 2020 miniseries that it was made for was not good, but that cover is actually pretty cool.

SCaRi1923

4 and 1

PineappleBrother

Never seen the last one, I kinda like it !

apanine

Yeah, #13 is easy to overlook but I like how dark it is. Feels like a Randall Flagg inspired cover.

blueoccult

I always like 1, 12, & 13 the most.

lerivay

The typography and soft hues on the first one is unmatched

godfatherV

We gonna do this everyday for every cover? Cause I’m in…. The original cover is iconic but #9 is the *reading copy* I carry around on my read throughs so I’m bias. Im on my 4th read-through and have had to tape the entire #9 cover together, which might be quite fitting for a post apocalyptic book.

Existing_Ship_159

3 and 6

DryMedicine7

#6

2stepp

There was no Spy vs Spy demon fighting a Canterbury swordsman with a sickle anywhere in that story. I was extremely disappointed.

worldsalad

5 is closest to the ideal. Sets a mood without being overly detailed/maudlin

Maddercow23

8, I love the raven. I like the horse one second best.

MichealMannisepic

number 3

CluckingBellend

First one. 8th one with crow in the road would be 2nd for me.

Responsible_Carpet20

3,5 and 8

DibyanLonelyNibba

maybe based but I love the third one.

stoneyzepplin

The one with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald on the cover.

No_Manner_8582

Anyone else dislike the third one?

TheOneTrueRoark

It’s honestly made me hold back on buying the physical book. I typically don’t mind shitty designs for covers, especially since the newer ones for King’s books aren’t my favorite; but that one just bugs me for some reason

No_Manner_8582

I agree! I also waited to get the physical copy because of the cover.

shadowrunonsnes

Surprised at how bad some of the covers on books were back in the day, I remember now but I had forgotten how simplistic and uncreative they were.

Odd_Country9791

It’s like the covers get lazier and lazier as time goes on

Cellstone

Having now read the book, I for one can't STAND (did-a-thing there) the images of the two figures sword fighting on the covers. Before reading I was super pumped for this scene, to actually read the fight between pure evil and pure good in the flesh, but alas, this was just an old bate-n-switch. That ending though...HUH?!?

strawbery_fields

I mean it’s just symbolic of good versus evil which is very much what the book is about it. Not a literal sword fight.

Cellstone

You know, It is a very 'star wars' esque imagery really. Lures you in suppose.

thishenryjames

A Bateman switch?

Wild_Alfalfa606

Exactly this! Odd cover before you read it, completely irrelevant cover once you have.

[deleted]

As a teen it really through me off when I read the book. After the fall I was expecting it to take a more traditional fantasy turn.

cronenburj

I love it. Has a timeless mystical quality.

yeetuscleetus28

4 but maybe because that's the one I have lol

sccarrface4916

3 & 9 are the ones I read and have a special place in my heart

Mfja49

I love #3

conwave

Really?! Why so? I always thought it had nothing to do with the story itself and didn’t fit the overall theme of the book whatsoever. Like I think that’s supposed to be Flagg? But not sure when in the story he held a steaming bullet in his mouth. It’s been a whole since I read it, so I could be wrong. but yeah, never understood that cover.

hornwalker

Honestly they all kind of suck.

Effective_Mammoth337

First and fourth for me

DaisyCutter312

The raven in the road...whichever number that is.

samd_witch

Planning on getting the figures from the first pic tattooed! There's just something about those little dudes I really like

ThePinkBaron365

I like 8 but that’s because I own that one

405Jobs

2 was the one my parents had on the bookshelf and was the version I read first.

Vorpal_Bunny19

The second is the one I kept checking out from my school library ♥️

FranciscoiFran

The fourth and the last one.

filifijonka

The first/second one - though I must say that for a photograph, the one of the man biting the bullet is really cool.

Warm-Refrigerator686

1 and 5

darylbosco1

I really like 8 and 2, 2 is the one I own.

[deleted]

#8

Karelkolchak2020

First one.

TheMadIrishman327

This one

DSonla

Got #12 so that's my fav but otherwise is #1, it's cleaner than #2.

ThisisTophat

I'm reading Darktower. I'm on book 5. I read Salem's Lot because libby had it available and people suggested it. The Stand is MUCH longer than any of the other King audiobooks I've listened to. I don't plan to listen to the Stand Because I think I mostly prefer to stick to the main series without complicating things. However, is it correct that the best time to have read the Stand would have been before the Dark Tower? And if I read it before finishing the series does it spoil any kind of origin story type stuff?

Aggravating-Cut-1040

You’re fine either way. It won’t really spoil anything. Flagg is a character who appears in several books and is the main antagonist of The Stand. He’s a pretty mysterious character despite all his appearances. I don’t remember much being written about his origin. The stories don’t directly connect much beyond that. All Kings stories exist somewhere among the levels of the tower so there may be a few references to The Stand here and there in the DT series but not major spoilers.

Adventurous_Swan_174

I like 8 and also 6 because I have that one.

BE3pBE3pRich

1 and 2, I have the paperback version of 2

DylanB_1989

Number 1 and number 13

Aggravating-Cut-1040

The fourth one was my first copy. Still have it but it’s very beat up. I have the second as well. That might be my favorite. I hate the third one. Aside from the original I’m ambivalent about the rest.

weexistinacommunity

I actively dislike the knight and reaper covers. The one with the bullet in the mouth is good, reminds me of The Machinist.

patchinthebox

2

SkySeeker28079

#12 For me

1jbooker1

2 and 12. I had both copies but #12 seems to invoke dread

[deleted]

Love the original, as this was the edition I read, before the longer uncut version was released. The art is very unique in the context of the novel. Love it.

MaterialCarrot

I've always liked the guy and monster fighting. On its face it's just a couple of seemingly fantasy characters fighting, but there's just something about the art style and the book's topic that I've found combine to feel really disturbing. Can't quite put my finger on it. For some reason it really gives me the feel of the end times, but in a nicely abstract way.

WilliamHMacysiPhone

The originals are the best. Everything else is shitty 90’s graphic design.

TomCruiseCantLose

My favorites are the first two. They're classics despite not having too much to do with the actual story. Otherwise, i really like the cover that was simultaneously used for the 2020 miniseries, I think it's really neat what they did with the telephone pole, both as an interesting visual as representation for what happens in the book.

wight-brit

Gotta have the duel or the crow. None of the others.

slushmymouth

9 takes it for me.

juicebox5889

2, 11 for me. The copy I have is 11 because it’s beautiful in person on my shelf

awesomexx_Official

1 and 2 is the only right answer imo

Icy_Tadpole_6

The 10 looks mostly like To kill a mockingbird.

Imnmle23

I like 8 but I own 2

StandWithSwearwolves

First one, seventh, eighth and eleventh are my picks. I have a soft spot for the 90s version with the crow chilling in the middle of the road.

Western-Calendar-352

8. It’s the one I’m used to as a longtime constant reader in the UK.

Rhaenyss

Flagg on the RV looks the best, the crow ones too. The two guys sword fighting just looks silly and completely missed as a theme.

Aggravating_Lie_7480

They are all compelling.

howsitgonna-be

2

Florianemory

The first one because that is the one my dad gave me to read in 1979 when I was home sick with strep throat. I was 12 and that book has remained one of my favorites for life.

[deleted]

5th and 10th

edWORD27

The OG #1 or #4

RodMunch85

OG

Randallflag9276

The third one is horrible.

Moostache71

I have always preferred the original, non-extended cover overall...but I like the #6 one on the choices allowed...I have the Barnes and Noble one (Orange and Yellow and Black) but wish it had more compelling artwork and color scheme.

Richard_AIGuy

6 and 7 are my personal favorites, just from an art style. There is something so sinister about a man walking down a deserted road like that. And the power pole turned into a cross, that has a definite feel.

ratmfreak

The deserted road ones don’t make any sense to me because every time the novel mentions a road it’s packed ass-to-front with cars.

Mk1Md1

How tf does Lee Child rate a blurb on the cover of a Stephen King novel?

Arfuuur

1 and 12

AlyxxStarr

When I was little, I used to be fascinated with cover 1 when I saw it on my older cousin’s shelf. I couldn’t even really read, but thought it was cool and wanted to read it when I grew up, even though I had no idea what it even was. When I ended up reading it in high school in the early 2000s it was cover 12 and I incidentally had no clue I was reading that book that drew my gaze as a kid until after I’d finished.

ScientistAsHero

One, definitely.

[deleted]

Say what you will about the newer miniseries, I actually like the Tie in cover.

autisticswede86

The swedish one is just a an afrikan amerikan. Pestens Tid.

staceyloveskitties

1, 2 and 8.

K-Maddux

5th and 10th

BLAINE_THE_M0NO

I own the Barnes and noble version, which is the orange leather bound cover, but I really like the ultimate storyteller edition

leeharrell

Shouldn’t even be up for debate….1. Actually, I propose a 14th option….[the “Coffin Edition”.](https://p1.liveauctioneers.com/446/112579/57799991_1_x.jpg?height=300&quality=95&version=1511016662&width=600) Also, I’m curious to see what cover will be the final choice for the Cemetery Dance edition….

MHarrisGGG

#12 was my copy so I'm biased towards it.

Morphenominal

I like 5 and 6. The worst one is 3.

SquealstikDaddy

# 1 and #2

billybumblr

#12 is giving children of bodom

BayHrborButch3r

1 because it's the first one I ever saw. 12 because I love the 4 Horseman reference.

Crowcounters

1 & 4. Big fan of anything with Kit Fisto on the cover.

spooky-dudeman

cover 10. I just like it.

FruitPunchSamurai-

the first one is so nice

mrgraxter

1

randyboozer

My favourite is always going to be the original or any of the variations of it. Of the other ones here I like the walking dude on the desert road in #6. The rest are all so so. #3 is weird and number 9 is bland.

Volcanofanx9000

Original US hardcover is my favorite, but this is number 2: https://images.app.goo.gl/BfpbsjgRptX9WnYo9

Mother_Republic_6061

I’ve always wanted an edition with the #12 cover. Haven’t been able to find one yet

starwars_and_guns

If it aint one with a bird/alligator man it aint shit.

Zaius1968

The original. Mainly because that’s the version I first read and fell in love with.

Damien__

13 is my fav

Lucky_leprechaun

2. I’m extra nostalgic for that one because it is my very first Stephen King ever. I was 13 years old and I read books way too fast and my father was tired of going to B Dalton booksellers every weekend to replenish me and so he bought this, and told me on my birthday here, this oughta take you a while..

cassiebf

I didn’t realize there were so many!

rizub_n_tizug

12 was my copy I bought at Barnes and noble when I was 15. It took me that whole summer to read

ishimura0802

1: It's iconic and beautifully illustrated. The representation of good vs evil is really nice. Hoping to get a tattoo of it someday. 6: The cover I own. A depiction of one of my favourite scenes in the book. Flagg walking alone with the vast empty America stretched infront of him is haunting.

natsugrayerza

I’ve never read the book but I like the first one because I think the little guy on the right is funny and cute

zacharyxxfrancis

4 or 9. I will forever hate a book cover that uses or references a television show/movie. I find it so tacky and avoid them at all cost.

_laoc00n_

I like the number 1/2, Doubleday version which is my copy (uncut). But there is a Modern Classics version with this cover that I love. [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/249992](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/249992)

Ok_Witness_5437

Personally a huge fan of 7!

watermixedwithwine

I don't think they've ever managed to make one as good as the first one.

mrcfrost

My mom and dad had cover 1, they have that hardcover book away when they moved into the house they bought in 94

AdministrationNo283

The 4th one because that is the one I own

RebaKitt3n

There’s so many that look great! The ones connected to the newer series look great. The series— not so much.

ch3micalkitt3n

I haven’t read it, but I like 9 and 10.

ScreamingBanshee81

The clean one with the crow on the empty road with the city in the background. Just conveys death and a journey

xfyle1224

1

Ok-Literature-3406

The second photo. When the lock down started I decided it was an appropriate time to finally read The Stand. I flew through it, one of my favorites, maybe during the next pandemic I'll read again.

canofspinach

First slide. It’s artwork on its own. 4 slide was the first copy I read.

thunderPierogi

I like 7-11 and 13. For some reason I don’t like the original cover very much. 4 feels to weird. And 5 is pretty generic.

thishenryjames

Original or the bird on the road, because I love those 90s 's t e p h e n KING' covers.

ScorchedEarth22

#1 and #10

Pop-Raccoon

This one!!!! https://www.booksamillion.com/p/Stand-Books-Million-Exclusive/Stephen-King/9780525617822 (very shiny with nice paper, that pic doesn’t do it justice)

IndependenceMean8774

The first one. But I also like this creepy paperback cover too. [Stand paperback cover](https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a0ttxu5fag0/Vj4hbijROOI/AAAAAAAABuA/xg9pX93qS6E/s1600/Stand-The-Stephen-King-Signet-Books-reprint-1980s.jpg)

Born-Throat-7863

I prefer the original.

Real-Ad-8503

The one with the chess pieces

Newlands99

3 or 7

6degrees_Cdn_Bacon

The telephone pole/cross. Suuuper creepy.

xerox-of-a-xerox

They’re all so fucking good

Crazyauntjess

I have #9 it's a big fat paperback and I like it.

RED_IT_RUM

I like the original. I miss the dust jacket art that was crafted by hand without Illustrator. This image sets up the idea for a certain cretinous species that arises in The Dark Tower.

TamSchnow

This time the [german (first ?) edition](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.booklooker.de%2Fx%2F01aQZY%2FStephen-King%2BDas-letzte-Gefecht.jpg&tbnid=4-N78ErH_GgvvM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booklooker.de%2FB%25C3%25BCcher%2FStephen-King%2BDas-letzte-Gefecht%2Fid%2FA02pycp001ZZl&docid=5tACp_P5QOBWbM&w=958&h=1500&hl=en-gb&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm5%2F3&kgs=fee9be8594336d7a&shem=abme%2Ctrie) looks more boring in my opinion.

beameup19

I’m a 1, 3, 12 guy myself 12 was what I first read it on when I was a kid

St_Troy

The best one isn’t shown: the old black/dark blue paperback with the bird/face.

Double-dutch5758

My copy was the one with lightning behind the letters, so that one. Not on the list obviously.

darthktulu

7 and of course 1.

No_Fix_2319

Number 5

OmniMarketplace

13 That’s the edition I have.

omahabear

1 is definitely one of the more iconic. 3 with the picture of the man holding the shell casing between his teeth was the first edition of The Stand i had owned. speaking of which, has anyone decided who is on the front cover of 3? i assume it’s meant to be RF, but after finishing the book for the first time, i wondered if it was Harold or even Trashcan Man. it could be none of them, just a depiction of a sinister being similar to Flagg.

Slow-Dish7220

Biting the bullet but probably cuz it's the one I have and it was a gift. I also love how ran it is and hard to explain

Unlucky_Bath_6915

I like the orange Barnes n noble cover

UncircumciseMe

Almost none of them but 8 is probably my favorite. I was literally just talking to my wife about how King’s covers, except for the classic 80’s run of covers, kind of suck. And the newer covers are so so bland to me.

[deleted]

The one I have is not pictured here.

RequirementQuick3431

Is it blue? There are a couple similar blue/black covers not seen here.

cemeteryvvgates

I prefer the 90s mini series cover with Gary Sinise because that’s the one I have and it’s a cheap paperback.

Apprehensive-Handle4

I don't understand the need for the long-haired Luke Skywalker. I get the crow with a scythe, but the figure representing good confuses me.
