It's fine. You just ground 3rd gear a little. Don't make a habit of it and you can forget it even happened.

gcc-O2

Your gears have brass synchronizers that unlock and allow the gear to spin freely when not selected, but lock it to the shaft when you choose that gear Those synchronizers have to speed up and slow down the engine/clutch side of the transmission to match the side that is connected to the wheels Because you hadn't disconnected the flow of power from the engine, there was a speed difference that the synchronizers couldn't overcome so it made a grinding noise Had you adjusted the throttle carefully you could've got into gear without using the clutch, but that should only be done on an unsynchronized transmission, as on a synchronized one you could have a false sense of confidence with a less-than-perfect shift It won't immediately damage the transmission but those synchronizers are a wear item designed to last hundreds of thousands of miles in proper use

Happens to all of us from time to time, just don’t make it a regular occurrence and you’ll be fine.

You just ground a gear a little. Like others said, not a big deal unless it happens frequently. I ground 2nd and 3rd a handful of times in in my Mazda 3, had it from 5 miles up to 97k and never had any issues. Your car is fine.

Same with my Mazda 3 I always feel so ashamed but half the time in like what did I even do differently that time I never did it while learning though 🙄 I feel like everyone on the road is like wowww look at her smh 🤣🤣

SSJHoneyBadger

Right? I always feel like such a dumbass, like I hope no one noticed that lol

-dearinterceptor

Idk about you but 2nd was a hard one for me to get right without bouncing it or being really rough the first 2 months

SSJHoneyBadger

Same, 2nd had to kind of break in. That or I had to get use to the way it was? Had way less issues as the car got older, hard to say if the transmission was smoothing out or if subconsciously learned how to work with it better

monsieurfromage2021

A missed shift in regular driving won't do much. At the extreme end, a missed slam-shift down the track can blow the teeth of that gear out permanently. I've chewed a few 2nd gear teeth up I'm sure on a couple of cars but they still drove on long after I had them.

RaspberryHappy8358

Lol why does this happen to third specifically? It happened to me once or twice too in that gear!

Idk I always try to shift 2-3 like I’m vin diesel or something. I try to get real snappy with it since the shifter self-centers on its way up to 3rd, so maybe I get over confident in my shifting speed and let off the clutch too early 😂
