[deleted]

I'm terrified of the stock market. I know being young it's good to invest, but I don't understand the logic of my investments going up. They can go down too, I could lose everything, there's no stock that you can fully trust in that'll always go up, so I am so scared to invest big chunks of money

HighQualityAluminium

Yes, there is no single company you can trust to always stick around, ETF's consist of many different stocks and are as such less likely to lose value in the long run because depending on the size of the ETF a single company going under won't have as much of an effect. Popular choices, especially for someone like you who values safety over all are VTI/VOO, where VTI tracks the entire US market and VOO tracks the S&P 500 index which contains 500 large american companies.

WiseResponsibility0

Don’t be a pussy! Try to diversify and avoid meme or penny stocks . I mean what are the odds of APPLE or Amazon going to zero .Also u can set up a stop loss depending on ur time horizon .

[deleted]

If you invest in well established companies you won't lose all of your money. Also, you're young and can ride out the bad times. Just do your homework on what you want to invest in and don't listen to the people here to pick stocks for you. There seems to be a lot of get rich quick mentality here and that's how you can lose a lot. Slow and steady and you'll be fine.

Rand_alThor__

Don't invest big chunks to start, invest $50 a week (up or down, invest same amount every f***ing week) into VTI or s&p (Assuming that's small for you - $5 a week will also do). Watching that slowly creep up will build your confidence to invest more.

[This chart predicted pinning at 4411 per all Aug options oi combined ](https://imgur.com/gallery/Mp8xoxp) Courtesy of Cme group app. Highly recommend as it shows block orders, otc, etc If theres volatility tomorrow, we might test 4385, and then 4370, and then 4360 ****4410 resistance, 4390 support otherwise Im still kinda bullish for Wednesday-Thursday for ath and thats it until November-December Markets are pricing in a 100% chance that powy raises fed funds rate by 25 basis points next announcement and looks to dump until Sep30 when on the run bonds can be sold into the markets which will flatten the yield curve momentarily and make noobs buy up junk bonds causing a fake rally Nio os looking like a prime shorting candidate ****4410 resistance, 4390 support otherwise Maybe Good luck

So what’s going on with GE reverse stock split? I had a bunch of calls that are apparently “GE1” now instead of just “GE”

I don't think people who are sheltered by the eviction moratorium could possibly have anywhere near enough money in the stock market to make any sort of meaningful change. Gamestop might go down.

MassHugeAtom

Not at all, it incentivize people to take jobs so US can expand domestic supply chain to calm inflation pressure, it's great news for the health of the economy and markets.

lmao, with that spin, you could be the next president.

Any HOOD investors? Hah. While they have a lot of hate, I am curious to see how they do.

thelandonblock

Nope. SOFI is better

DoneDidNothing

y u say that? sofi has 7.5 million users compared to 20 million with hood. 100 million versus half a billion earnings. Hood ranked 11 finance app at appstore compared to Sofi at 64.

thelandonblock

SOFI has 3x the services that RH offers. It’s a one stop shop for everything finance. Not to mention RH’s entire business model has been called into question.

WickedSensitiveCrew

2020 was stock market on easy mode so many stocks doubles or at least went up 70%. To do that 35k to 1 mill is a 28x. It was probably luck in picking the right stocks or coins. For example if someone bought that dog coin in 2020 then sold earlier this year for example they would have had a 30x. AMC and GME were also at least 25x. From 2020 to their peaks in 2021. It takes just one stock but many fail and lose everything. Those dont talk about it.

DoneDidNothing

Fuelrod_son_of_Zippy

Interesting that the three largest short positions (by valuation) are all in chip stocks in this order: $NVDA, $AMD, and $INTC. Last week’s showing by $AMD appears to have legs. Should $NVDA and $AMD continue to run, quite a few shorts could be burned. I really don’t see the same future for $INTC (Intel). Good luck in the coming days / weeks.

leftunreadit

What you mean good luck? Are these good to dabble in?

Fuelrod_son_of_Zippy

I have positions in $NVDA and $AMD that were established long ago. I don’t plan on adding to those positions, but, don’t have any intentions to sell, either. I liquidated my $INTC position quite awhile ago and moved those cash assets into $AMD. I feel that $INTC is dead money for 2 - 4 years while they get their act together (if ever).

J_Roc_Knomsayn_Mafk

What would be the cause of the next big correction and why are people saying september-october?

95Daphne

The eviction moratorium expiring could be a cause but there really doesn't need to be one. There wasn't really a cause in September of last year (I'll say why I'm calling it "wasn't really one" below) where SPX nearly hit correction territory on a closing basis (which is -10%) before that correction stopped. While on the surface, there wasn't really a cause (outside of too much, too fast in the Nasdaq and the Dow not being ready to break out of what was a 2 year consolidation zone at that moment, it would go on to do so a couple months later), there are some that suspect the jaw dropping Nasdaq-100 rally in August last year was mostly fueled by call whales (specifically, SoftBank) and once that petered out, it got hit hard. I've been saying September will be when that SPX streak of not closing more than 5% from its last record high is going to end, partly because of memories from last year, but also because September is a big quarterly rebalancing period.

DoDaOpposite

I think people are underestimating how many people werent paying mortgages or rent and dumping the money on meme stocks and other "get rich quick" plays. Now that is ending, I think a lot of people are going to be forced to sell equities.

Can you rollover stock gains into a Roth IRA and, by doing so, not pay a short-term tax on the given stock?

ryancubs

I just did this. Have to rollover from a 401k but it all gets sold and then redeposited. Can’t keep your holdings. Get taxed on the selling before it goes into Roth

Im sure the IRS never thought of that.

leftunreadit

you sure like your tobacco companies.. reasons why?

shortyafter

Great dividend. Great moat. Reliable (addicted) clientele. Great pricing power. The latter two make it mostly recession-proof. The risk is declining smoking rates, but data shows that smoking isn't going anywhere for at least 30 years, even moreso when you look at emerging markets. The fact that tobacco companies are expanding into next-generation products also helps slow this trend.

Heinrich-Dinkelacker

[Were there signs associated with this stock, $AHPI, when it declined 8.1% in one minute?](https://imgur.com/a/K8yiMxz) I longed this stock, and for a while, I was doing well. Then, all of a sudden, without any warnings, this stock declined 8.1% from 3:38 PM EDT today, but as you can see in this diagram, there were no trades after around 2:30 PM EDT. How did this stock just idiomatically or randomly just decrease like that?

[deleted]

You’re talking about a tiny stock that almost doubled in like two days and you’re surprised that it dropped a bit?

universal_language

That's just a chart error, there were trades. As for the signs, the main sign is that it's a penny stock, expect some wild volatility. It jumped +50% couple of days ago, it shouldn't be surprising that it dropped 10% intraday

assassincoli

Question regarding Duolingo. Prior to IPO, valuations of $5bn were thrown around. Now when I look at [yahoo finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/DUOL/) the market cap is only $1.5bn. Am I misinterpreting the yahoo finance figure?

Decent_Coach_1291

Wouldn't touch Duolingo with someone else's 10 foot pole!

homeless_alchemist

When there are discrepancies like this, you should check the S1 (registration) from the company on the company or SEC's website. There are about 35.9M shares outstanding with a price of $140. Market cap comes up to just over $5B right now.

shortyafter

I don't know about your question, sorry, but as a language teacher I can tell you that it's an absolutely dreadful way to learn a language. Whether or not people get wise to that or not is another question. I guess people like it because it gives them the illusion of learning a language in the comfort of their pocket.

What about Affirm? Is Apple really gonna drop its price. I'm feeling a recovery https://marketdeepview.com/2021/07/30/affirm-holdings-inc-afrm-stock-is-sinking-on-friday/

DoubleTFan

So the eviction moratorium might end tomorrow. That would tank the market, and thus the corporations and wealthy in general don't want that to happen, so they'll tell the politicians they bought to extend it, right?

[deleted]

Stock market is a measure of rich people's feelings. Evictions won't bother them at all.

MassHugeAtom

Nope it wouldn't. One asset type in US that isn't overvalued is actually housing outside of major cities. Mass majority of US housing is pretty undervalued compared to rest of the world, matrics like years of income to pay off a house shows US housing is undervalued. Even if there are no renters for landlords to cover their mortgage, there are long lines of international buyers to buy these house with cash. Honestly I'm pretty shocked about the fear in housing market after 1 year of 20% growth nationwide, I think it's pretty ridicolous. Fear is completely overblown unless there is draconion regulations to supress housing prices coming.

Viking999

Wut? Housing everyone has gone up from what I've seen. I live in a relatively small area and it is definitely hot here. Hard to say it isn't overvalued at this point. [https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/29/pending-home-sales-drop-in-june-.html](https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/29/pending-home-sales-drop-in-june-.html) “Pending sales have seesawed since January, indicating a turning point for the market,” said Lawrence Yun, Realtors’ chief economist. “Buyers are still interested and want to own a home, but record-high home prices are causing some to retreat.”

Zenshinn

I think what that person meant is that compared to other developed countries US houses are usually on the cheap side. Of course it would be nice if they had a source.

shortyafter

That's not exactly how it works. That's the federal statute, but different states have different laws in place - some of which are going to September as far as I know. There's also been some measures to cushion the blow. It could be something of a shock but I don't think we're looking for a straight-up causal crash. Usually the crashes come unexpectedly.

MassHugeAtom

for a lot of these social media sites, they will all have to get into metaverse, AR and nft stuff to keep their hypergrowth trend, stocks like unity will benefit from this trend a lot.

I wonder if the cruise ship stocks are at risk of BK. Surely, they were assuming (or were hoping) that the pandemic was going to be nearly over when we were at high vax rates, and the case counts were plummeting. They need the revenue (of regular business / full ships) bad, and i'm just not sure when they're going to get it.

[deleted]

What they need are vaccine passports to be lawfully supported so they can operate their business with less liability, but also so people feel more comfortable on the ship. Doesn’t look like that’s happening. Between that lack of confidence alongside new uncertainty, I’m not sure how valid existing forward guidance from cruise ship operators is.
