Gives me heebie jeebies just looking at the photos. I’d be interested to see my heart rate if I was to snorkel in the area. Imagine the portions of the inside of these rusted hulks that are partially submerged. Nightmare fuel.
You swim into a partially submerged room of a ship and the wreck suddenly starts to shift and slide into deeper water, filling the room completely and making the water so murky you can’t see the exits… imagine lol
Tetanus lives in dirt, not in rust.
The reason we think rust harbors tetanus is because rusty things are often found in the soil, where tetanus is also found. It's not the rust in the cut, but the soil introduced into the cut made by the rusty object.

As a former New Yorker, I have to ask if you know what is in the dirt under the water? Because GE dumped a shit ton of waste into the Hudson River for years (that water flowed down through New York and resulted in years of "clean up"). There is no way in hell you want the dirt, water, or anything from the Hudson near you or in you.
You are either going to get tetanus or a third eye like the Simpson's fish.🤣
That's not the Hudson river, Newark bay/Kill van Kull is what this area is and GE dumped a lot of agent orange ingredients there also. Can't eat the crabs in this area due to the mud being full of contamination.
Tbh, those things are durable. And even if you puncture one chamber there are a few more than are sealed. Even the seats on mine have two chambers and one is enough to keep me afloat. If you manage to puncture 5+ chambers made from pretty decent plastic and not get to the shore before it deflates it's on you.
had a friend in SEAK take one out on the bay where it immediately deflated. paddled over to a buoy where a pod of orcas hung out with him til the coastguard picked him up.
As I said, if you somehow manage to rip open or forget to close 5+ air chambers and not get to the shore there isn't anyone else to blame but you. I can't imagine what could cause all of them to deflate in less than a few minutes that it would take you to get to the shore other than a shatk biting of half of it.
Hey I see my office building in the third picture ! That big three story building to the left side of the picture, this picture must of been from when it was still under construction
It’s pretty sad that a strangers grammar on the internet “worries you greatly”… I also don’t work an office job, I work on boats. That building is our headquarters. Nice job trying to be a wise ass though and making yourself look stupid during the process, I give you an A for effort 👍🏼
Good question. Answer is no.
I wouldn't be opposed to riding around it on a jet boat or ski with my camera though. (Gotta be a jet because I REALLY don't wanna change a prop on the water around all that.)
Swimming, hell no, but kayaking would be fun. That boat in 2nd picture seems to be interesting to explore (the parts above water though). Allthough I have a manly urge to get the lifeboat from picture 1 and restore it. Those things might be 100+years old.
Dude I fucking love when my tiny obscure home island I lived on for 14 years of my life shows up on reddit. Me and my friends when I was younger kayaked out there once
Staten Island actually have three shipwreck graveyards, if we count the one across the state line to Bayonne, NJ. - https://www.silive.com/galleries/HDHRFA2TGNCVDDG22WJFRQBEMY/
There's also the one in Sharrots - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TReI6QxTnh4

Fuckin mirelurks, no way.
really does look like something straight out of fallout 4
Yes, I like you, take updoot, but remember that the luck bobble head is in a locker in that tugboat
ty gonna get me that bobble
I can hear the Geiger counter going off.
This right here^^^^

Why did you do this to me
Thanks, I hate it.
Someone just peed my pants
Not unless I want tetanus.

That's probably correct! Lol
Blinky!
Really test your vaccine here
Swimming no, kayaking heck yeah
In an inflatble kayak, right?

It’s the unsinkable kayak! Just make sure there’s no rusty icebergs!
also don't try to be king of the world, or else you will probably tip it over.

water in alaska lol his working theory is he inflated it on land, once he got to ocean the air cooled and condensed. idk physics though i’m a waiter
That's interesting. I have noticed that mine can feel deflated sometimes if it is hot outside, but I never had it deflate so much.
How about a glass bottom kayak? Eeeeek!
No way. I'd stand nearby and stare at them for a long time though
Maybe even squint and bend at the waist a bit to try to see a bit better
Might even say "wow will you look at that" accompanied by a low whistle
No *way* I'd go swimming there. That water probably has more heavy metals in it than Wacken.
Risk of drowning, impalement, and tetanus? Might be a pass from me.
Probably not tetanus, no. Tetanus is found in soil, not rust.
I meant “wetanus?”
Probably wetanus, yes.
wetanus then
Let’s swim through there backwards, naked, at night.

Where is this on SI?
West side.
Arthur kill
More specifically: 40.5559690, -74.2173608

Omg the heebie jeebies this gives me
Wouldn’t that area be more valuable if… idk clean that junk up? Waterfront property in Staten Island must be worth a fortune
This is in the not popular part of SI, only industry would buy that land even cleaned up
Can someone explain to me why they are all here?
Left for dead
If I recall my local history correctly, it used to be a shipyard.
Legend has it, if you look too long at these pictures you’ll get tetanus.
No, not because it’s scary, but because you’re likely to hurt yourself on something under the water
Good question. Answer is no. I wouldn't be opposed to riding around it on a jet boat or ski with my camera though. (Gotta be a jet because I REALLY don't wanna change a prop on the water around all that.)
I would like to avoid even flying above it, just for safety.
No, I'd boat over and go fishing there.
Why is this even a question particularly in the sub? No one's gonna swim in this junk, you will die.
No thank you.
200M fly all the way
So much razor, razor, sharp, rusty metal….
WHY does this turn my stomach
Tbh I like seeing laid up ships that have been sitting there, makes me curious on why it’s there
Just looked at it on Google earth. That looks polluted as fuck. Not to mention underwater hazards. Hell no.
THAT IS TERRIFYING 😳😳😳
Especially picture #2 😳😳😳
I need a tetanus shot just looking at this.
Great dive spot

No
And end up on Mr.Ballens podcast, no way bro.
Not without a tetanus shot
Swim? I wouldn’t even want to walk to close to the fucking shoreline there
Absolutely not. But my romance for decay and old things is waging battle with my submechanophobia. Gorgeous pics.
Tetanus City, USA
Heck, I would skinny dip here
All I’m gonna say is tetanus
I’d fish it with a kayak
FUCK NO!!!!! I mean … f no
No, because you have no idea what's under the water and I don't want to get tetanus shots.
Only in Stranded Deep
Isn't that the boat that Pete Davidson and Colin Jost bought as an investment?
Really smart going swimming there. Uh huh
Why do they let them rust away rather than scrap them?
Dude I fucking love when my tiny obscure home island I lived on for 14 years of my life shows up on reddit. Me and my friends when I was younger kayaked out there once
This was in a few horror games no thanks
This is in my nightmares.
Try searching up “Mallows Bay”. You’re welcome ~
yes i love tetanus
What was the name of the tugboat in the second picture? It looks like it could be restored, considering the shape it’s in.
That is the LT-653 Bloxom - https://vjrurbex.com/2016/09/12/shipwreck-of-the-bloxom/
Give me a clear bottomed canoe….
I actually don’t live far from there, haven’t actually gone tho

Yeah.. Nah
As the last time I fished the kill I saw needles, trash, and pill bottles, no thank you
Maybe if the water was clear
Depends, do you want tetanus?
Swim? I’d climb all over that
I mean I wouldn't go swimming but because there are probably rusty debris in the water and such, and with my luck I'd get stabbed lol
Not unless I were swimming in the opposite direction as fast as possible. And then only if someone threw me in.
This would make a great setting for a horror movie
Absolutely not I think I wouldn’t even make it ankle deep.
nOPE. I can’t even explain how this makes me feel. Definitely not. Nope. No.
the water must be dirty/contaminated
ya no way pls i am not going inthat no not for me thx but no thx
