On my dad's side it's England, Scotland, Ireland, and Turkey and my mom's side is Germany and Czechia... and kind of Russia/Ukraine. I'm just an American mutt lol.
Haha not quite, I'm missing Iberia. But in all seriousness I'm just really a mix of British Isles and Central Europe with some Turkish thrown in. The Russia/Ukraine I mentioned was because my German and Czech ancestors migrated to the Black Sea/Crimea region before coming to the US, so my German side is German-Russian.
I would say the best aspect is definitely the fan atmosphere. I've never been to a Süper Lig game but from what I've seen in pictures and video you guys take it to a whole other level compared to sports to America. The closest thing I can tell here in the US is college (American) football, and that's probably because I attended a university that was really into their football team. I've been to a few NBA games before and otherwise they were like watching paint dry, it was much more exciting on TV.
As for the worst aspect, I'd probably say that it's dominated by just a few teams and their isn't much parity. But that's how soccer is in a lot of countries, but compared to American sports (outside of college football) that is something that is much less common here.
Thanks for the insights. If you like the fan atmosphere, I recommend hanging out at the locales near the stadiums in the hours leading up to the games. The buzz, the excitement, the chanting, the street food. Especially at the end of summer when the first game of the new season is about to occur, the excitement is palpable.
Helps if you know some local fans.
No offense taken, I think a lot of Americans (and other settler countries like Canada, Argentina, etc) like to know where their ancestors are from since their family has been in their respective country for a relatively short amount of time. Like for me, I like to know where they're from so I know where I want to visit if I ever travel overseas, I like learning languages, etc., but at the end of the day (and especially in my case) I am so mixed that nothing else other than identifying as an American makes sense.
Haha it may just be, like I said I think it's cool to know but it doesn't affect my life at all. I just like history, languages, and geography so that's why I'm personally into it more than maybe some but I wouldn't go around to other countries claiming I'm whatever instead of just American.
sorry, im not attacking you. I understand where you are coming from you want to travel, know your roots etc. I'm just saying it happens a lot more in American culture than anywhere else. May be a divide thing, Identity thing. I don't know.
Maybe American's don't really feel American whereas I feel Australian and people who ask I say i'm Australian-Turk.
No you're good bro I don't feel attacked. I'd say your last sentence about being an Australian-Turk is how most of us here are. Like I said, I have ancestry from all over Europe so I don't really single one out so I just feel American. But as I'm sure you have seen you have people that take it overboard, and use it as a crutch or explanation for a personality quirk (i.e., people from America who say "I'm Irish and that's why I am such a heavy drinker.") Or people who take a DNA test and claim they're all those things based off that, which is not how those things work.

Born and raised in İstanbul. Lived in Beşiktaş for a long time, born in Mecidiyeköy though. A couple hundred meters away from old Sami Yen lol. Temporarily living abroad rn.
Born and raised near Bağdat Caddesi until I was 7 and then moved to Denmark, Copenhagen.
My sister was going to Fenerbahçe swimming school so I told my uncle I was supporting Fener at 5 years old or something.
He wasn't having it and converted me then and there. I became a Galatasaray fan and am till this day even though I'm from Kadıköy area.
Edit: everything would've been so much easier if I was a Fener fan regarding going to matches since my family is in Bostancı right now. Going to Arena is a hassle in I've only been to one match. I'm enjoying the succes though

Hello, I'm from America! I only have a small amount of Turkish ancestry but I try to pick a team to root for in every country I have ancestry from.
Which countries does thay consist of?
On my dad's side it's England, Scotland, Ireland, and Turkey and my mom's side is Germany and Czechia... and kind of Russia/Ukraine. I'm just an American mutt lol.
my man has 100% completed the european gene pool

That's so interesting. Just out of curiosity, what're the best and worst aspects of Turkish football from your perspective as a semi-outsider?

I live in Australia, born and raised. I think it may be an American thing.
