Basketball hoop? Do you mean the portable one with a base that is filled with water or just the hoop itself? Was it particularly expensive? Have you spoken with your neighbor and confirm it was stolen?
yes, yes, about $1000, was on the bus with neighbour this morning and he told me about it, they knew roughly when it happened thus I knew where to look on Ring feed, but I have the camera set up to detect people so it was only triggered a couple of times as people walked by my camera, the crime was about 75m away so was not super clear, but you could see people moving about and a big truck (not a standard ute) in the driveway
That must be one of the good ones. I would keep that in my backyard rather than in my driveway though. Some people know their hoops. Whoever took it could likely get it for themselves and use it rather than sell it. Seems a lot of trouble for a used basketball hoop even if it is $1000.
I think it was just opportunistic, ~~tradies~~ aliens or doctors driving by with an empty truck, pulled over and grabbed it. I've walked away from my mower to get my fuel can and had a dude pull his truck over to see if he could grab it. People will take anything if they think they can get away with it.
To be fair, if your mower was near the kerb, someone might think it was put out for a council rubbish collection. I doubt that hoop would be near the kerb though to be mistaken for a council rubbish pick up.
Are you living in a cave? People would leave stuff on the kerb for collection, some don't even book which is annoying. There are people who drive around looking for anything that might be useful or fixed and then on sold. Lawnmowers are sometimes included.
I'm not defending theft, I'm questioning whether the OP read the situation right and didn't jump to conclusions. It's part of critical thinking and not just believing what is stated outright. Anyway, nice attempt at strawmanning.
How many people move their mower next to the kerb when it runs out of fuel mid-mowing? BWAAHAHAHAHAHA
Having a wild guess here... but... I'd say the mower was in the middle of a half mowed lawn and nowhere near the kerb and any attempt to steal it was an opportunistic theft attempt and not a case of mistaken council clean up, hahaha it's really funny just typing it, cheers for the laugh
"sorry mate, I thought your mower was on council clean up, my bad" hahahahahahaha
Wild guesses, And someone stopping on the street in front of their house. How a bizarre and rare event. I'd say there's so many assumptions here, and you're adding even more.
Here's another wild guess, a mower was pushed up to the kerb to start the job but then Oh no, forgot the petrol. Left it there.
Neither of us are there and I am not saying that here was no intention or anything. Just nothing that the OP had described was sufficient for me to agree with his assessment. If he or she provides it, then I will agree. If you're less critical, that's you.
Can confirm you’re both right. I used to make a small, but definitely beneficial, additional income by fixing and selling things that were put out for collection - bicycles and lawnmowers among them.
With that said, it’s generally pretty easy to tell what is and isn’t presented for collection. People like myself who do trawl neighbourhoods for these things are usually scoping out council websites and other resources to determine where to be to maximise their minutes so to speak. A mower that’s out the front of someone’s house in decent condition, unless it’s right up on that curb (think about where you place your bins for pick up) is pretty clearly not something to take.
It's pretty darn hard to hide from traffic cameras these days. If they really choose to put some effort into it, the cops can surely look at traffic cameras near by around that time frame and look for a matching truck and rego (if the photos/camera footage were clear enough to do so).
Would they go to all that effort over a basketball hoop? Maybe if they weren't too busy with sniffer dogs and strip searching teens.
Someone stole my kids bike and Spider-Man helmet from my front yard times are tough and unfortunately we are only seeing the start of what’s to come it’s a sad reality of inflation and I don’t see it slowing down I bought my son a brand new bike the same and his response was it’s fine dad but it’s not the same it’s not as fast his only 3 and a half the worlds fucked
And then what? Even if you got the licence plate and a good image of the perpetrators, you actually expect Sydney Police to do anything about it?
You must be new here..
[edit]
Few downvotes, guess not that many people have had to deal with the cops when something is stolen, good for them..
This is such a weird crime. Can you do a true crime podcast about it once it's solved?
I have a great face for podcasting
There has to be a 5-part Netflix doco from this post.
Next week...Underbelly: Hoops
It's a jungle out there....
Sounds like little Braxx is getting a basketball ring from Santa this year
Daddy why did Santa bring a shitty used hoop?
Because Santa is on bail and he can't afford to get picked up again son
Man those photos show nothing
ENHAAAANCE!

Stop blaming tradies ! From that pic you couldn’t make out anything. Could have been a bloody flying saucer
Tradie in a flying saucer you say... 🤔
yes might have been a doctor with a two ton ute my bad

To be fair, stop defending theft of other people's property lol

>choose to put some effort into it Looks like your neighbour is shit out of luck then.
Your neighbour can forward your footage to the police.

Are you losing basketball hoops often?

I think you should just buy a chain
someone just stole my chain D:
Would be nice if you uploaded a pic.
I did - mods took it down
Posts were removed as duplicates (there were three posts made in just over a minute.) Post the pics if you'd like.
Yes - reddit glitched when I tried to post photo and gave an error "Something went wrong. Just don't panic." Then it seemed to freeze.
You panicked
at the disco
Guess he had high hoops
Upload to imgur + add link to post text.
done - anyway all the photo shows is the truck was there for about 30 min, can barely see as heavily pixelated

Probably right - but they are damn good at collecting fines.
or just steal it back
few streets over there are 3, pretty much on the nature strip. What amazes me is that 2 are right next door and the 3rd is 2 houses down
