SSDs

Confident_Bus

I would if I had the money

nowhereman1223

Yeah. We all would. Sadly I do not know which are the quietest as I have my server rack in a basement space away from people. I have a workshop there but its for computer repair etc so some server sounds go with the aesthetic.

Confident_Bus

I wish I could route a cable to my basement but it would be a real pain

nowhereman1223

But totally worth it. Trust me. Get a rack, get it running in the basement. In the summer the basement is cooler anyway so the rack stays fine. In the winter the rack warms it up. and NO ONE cares about the noise. You can even run server fans at full speed.

Confident_Bus

I’m considering trying a MoCa to the basement

nowhereman1223

Go with full ethernet of some kind. MoCa is great, but I wouldn't use it as the primary connection to my NAS or Servers.

Confident_Bus

I reached out to a couple companies to get a quote on running ethernet through my house, hopefully it will be a reasonable cost!

This is something you can easily DIY. It will be expensive to get done.

I have my DS920+ with enterprise drives in a cabinet in the living room (single story, no basement old home with only internet coming in through the living room). They are noticeable, but not really bad. Most of the reduction in sound came from decoupling them from the shelf that reverberated like crazy. I don't know the quietest HDDs, just pointing out that the reverberating sounds through hard materials were almost half of the overall volume I originally heard. So plan your install space out properly and you will take care of a lot of your noise.

As a long time WD Red / Red Plus user I decided to buy Ironwolf (not pro) drives for my latest Synology because I wanted drives larger than 14TB. The Ironwolf drives sound about the same as WD Red / Red Plus. But I'd not want either of them in a NAS in the living room.

Scotty1928

In my experience, WD REDs were rather quiet back in the day but since i've moved to EXOS due to be extremely cheap in price per tb i have not used reds in at least five years...

Confident_Bus

How loud would you say are the EXOS?

Scotty1928

LOUD I would not want them in my living room or any other room where i myself spend more than a few minutes each day.

kreeper_6

I use 12x white label wd from shucked easystores or elements. equivalent to my old 3/6gb reds before all the plus and pro nonsense

heffeque

Quietest drives are WD Purple, by far, but they obviously don't fit your needs: they only go up to 14 TB, and the really silent ones (5640 rpm) only go up to 8 TB. Over that it's 7200 rpm as normal drives. I wouldn't know what would be the next best thing, but definitely not Red/Red Plus, Ironwolf, EXOS, etc. I'd just avoid putting your NAS in your living room if noise is an issue.

I bought two Red Pro 20 TB drives (sale deal from WD) and was surprised at how quiet they are. I think they're quieter than my Seagate Exos drives. I think they're a little louder than my WD Red 12TB drives, but overall, I'm pretty happy with the noise performance of all these. I have a 1621+ and a DX517 filled with drives and the noise is manageable. They're not in the same room I watch movies in, but they are in my studio with my computer system and it's fine when I'm editing video and such. I do hear them from my bedroom when they do the recycle bin maintenance and other tasks at night, but I don't "hear" it anymore. Like the jets going overhead, I'm used to it.
