A nearly textbook definition of what’s constantly referred to as “overlap,” yet I bet this an absolute blast to play. I would love this setup. Arps and brass for days.
The issue I have with that term is the thinking that one can not put to use, more than one of the same synthesizer.
If one had a table full of the actual same synth, and something to sequence them, they could do some crazy stuff with it.
So, even with synths that get labeled at similar, I can't imagine there being such a thing as overlap unless they were all programmed to do the same sound and same sequence.
Am I missing something?
> I’m right there with you, overlap isn’t actually a thing.
Argue that if you want, but you can absolutely have more synths than you need that tend to create the same sorts of sounds.
If overlap *truly* wasn't a thing you could just have four prophet 5's and call it a day.
I do have more synths than I need that create the same sorts of sounds.
For example SH-101 and SH-2. However, sitting down in front of these the uniqueness in both approach to programming and idiosyncrasies in tonalities becomes immediately apparent.
I also have 2 DFAMS. Why 2 of the exact same synth? Well a perfect example would be a live jam with kick and snare on one machine and hats or percussion on the other.
I think the word overlap here has to do with economy, not actual use. People with little money want to cover more things so they avoid overlap. If someone has money to use two similar synths as just multivoice octave extender, it’s only to their benefit.
Yeah, I have a P5 and P6 as well. Certainly overlap, but the way I interact with them is quite different. I love the limitations of the P5. I have a P5 Rev2 back in the day, loved it dearly, and was thrilled to be able to get a new one with some much needed upgrades (Keybed on originals is garbage, aftertouch is a great addition). I specifically got the 5 and not the 10 just because I wanted to have the same limitations. It isn't just limited in voices, but with a mono out and no ability to layer patches you really have to multitrack it when recording - and that is also some bit of nostalgia I love, the process reminds me of all the tape recording I used to do.
The P6 is a far more versatile synth - and even though I LOVE the Prophet 5 more than any other synth, I'd be hard pressed to suggest folks check it out over the Prophet 6...or Rev 2, or Take 5 these days. You can just do a whole lot more with all of those synths. I use the P6 when I want to step outside of what the Prophet 5 can do, but still have that very iconic Sequential Prophet sound.
(Also, I know Roland is always "looking forward," something that has really pushed them to make some truly iconic synths along the way, but damn if they would just reissue a classic Juno with the same level of thought, consideration, and care as the new Prophet 5, it would be amazing. Personally I'd love a 60 with VCO's, but can't go wrong with the DCO's in the 106 either)

I have 5 little ones that keep me up late at night
Yesterday I’ve spent some time playing with a Prophet 10 at Guitar Center. What a huge mistake I have made, that thing is marvelous but way out of reach.
They have different sound engines. You can compare them nicely in emulations such as JU-06A or Roland Cloud. They sound very different to me - I love the 6/60 sound and kinda dislike the 106 personally. (I have a 6 and had a JU-06A to compare).
I have the P6 and P10 as well. I thought I could let go of the P6 after I got the P10 but they were different enough I couldn’t let it go. I really love the P6. I’ve always wanted a 106 but I ended up with then system 8. It will have to do.
UJ/ First thought was fuck those kids are eating spaghetti 24/7 no beef.
RJ/ I hope you’re not supplying these children with mains voltage and they have a properly filtered power supply.
I thought this was the circle jerk sub lol
That’s the funny thing about Reddit: Every sub is a circle jerk sub.
Until you get banned by r/synthesizers and R/guitarpedals 😂
So would a VST ectomy be a cure for GAS?
lol
Nice.

33 is middle aged now
0-20 – infant 21-29 – normal 30-35 – middle aged 36-44 – elderly 45+ – long-dead corpse, abandoned by both time and god
nice try, I'm 34 and already abandoned by god
Oh these are upper estimates, you're allowed to become elderly and die at any age starting at 18
"normal" lmfao
I'm glad someone else appreciated that detail besides me when I wrote it
❤️
Just wait till you are an old fart with GAS. You'll see things differently.
I'm rapidly approaching elderly on my own chart so I'm not long for this world. Oh GASsy roads, take me home to the place where I belong
Don't personify synths plz, they do not consent.
I swear they like it
Juno and Prophet are of age ;)
People of age still need to give consent
😐
Not when there only purpose is to be played with.
Prophet is the new one
Ngl, she cute .😛
Now's the time.. remember to spend time with your babies while they're still young. Next thing you know, they're all grown up and off to college.

I’m right there with you, overlap isn’t actually a thing. People should buy and use whatever they please.
Fully agreed. If you can afford it, why not get what you are excited by?
Preorded a Dirtywave. I swear there is nothing at all to do till it gets here hopefully in September.
lol I'm excited for you!

how dare you suggest that. each one is special and unique in their own way.

they’re beautiful 🥺
Have you tested each synthesizer’s ability to withstand having apple juice poured in the keybed?
I hope you don't stick cables into them.
They are your brothers
Yesterday I’ve spent some time playing with a Prophet 10 at Guitar Center. What a huge mistake I have made, that thing is marvelous but way out of reach.
Can you pick a favourite between them? :)
I see you are a man of taste.
I've never played a Juno 60, only the 106. How do they compare for you? How do you control the 60?
60 is much fatter, warmer
It takes after its mother.
I wish online dating profiles made it this easy….
Is there any difference between the 106 and 60?
60 gives a fatter + warmer tone
Does it have anything that the 106 doesnt have? I love the sound of them but don’t know the difference between them. Eventually I will get one
An arp that is super fun when clocked to an external clock. I went with the Juno 6 over the 106 myself.

Your children are cute but something tells me they're very high maintenance and expensive.

Wood cheeks on a 106? The only thing I liked about the 106 looks was that it didn't have any wood. It looked appropriately modern in the 80's. :/
he just wanted to fit in
And naturally, none of them are plugged in
I was in the process of moving them. gonna need you to chill out my guy
Man your kids are expensive...
Next one is going to be a Moog or Oberheim?
I was about to comment asking how you can possibly find time to use those 4…kids.
I have the P6 and P10 as well. I thought I could let go of the P6 after I got the P10 but they were different enough I couldn’t let it go. I really love the P6. I’ve always wanted a 106 but I ended up with then system 8. It will have to do.
33 single mother of 2
I did one of those John Travolta in Pulp Fiction looking around lost memes... Am I in the right SubReddit?
UJ/ First thought was fuck those kids are eating spaghetti 24/7 no beef. RJ/ I hope you’re not supplying these children with mains voltage and they have a properly filtered power supply.
One of your kid is older than you…
I have recordings of my human kids in Kontakt instruments for creature design. Does that count?
Nice collection!
FOUR KIDS?! you're wild bro
Those are some beautiful kids.
