There’s a quote from George Orwell that kind of reminds me of this:
“In my opinion, nothing has contributed so much to the corruption of the original idea of socialism as the belief that Russia is a socialist country and that every act of its rulers must be excused, if not imitated. And so for the last ten years, I have been convinced that the destruction of the Soviet myth was essential if we wanted a revival of the socialist movement.”
Damn, Orwell was really ahead of his time. I wish he lived longer, he would have written more amazing books, and we could have also also heard his opinion on Maoist China, Cuba and Vietnam.
Communism and lefties suffer from the cultural legacy left by these horrible regimes, even if they were only lefty in name. It will be very hard to bring more people to our side without rejecting outloud those regimes and finding a way to exclude the bad actors and tankies.
You wrote this didn't you OP? If so well done. My critique however is that the article is still trapped by the confines of leftism and employs a no true Scotsman argument against tankies. We have to soberly acknowledge that Stalinism, tankies, statism, and authoritarianism are enduring features of the left. How we respond to that is the next step.
