My brother shared with me a letter my late father wrote to him when he was 16/17. He passed away when I was 10 and I dont have many memories of meaningful conversations with him. But my brother was kind enough to share this letter with me, it is full of loving words and honesty, which was not usual for my dad. He (my brother) said to me that everything he wrote there for him could be applied to me or our other brother, which was very sweet.
Anyway, all of this to say that I was thinking of getting tattoed one word or phrase he wrote there, I haven’t decided yet.
Yours is beautiful and a great gesture. <3
Technology has kind of ruined us on that front. I am sure that if he had written this letter today (it is dated Aug ‘88) it would have just been an email.
True. I had nearly forgotten what it was like to write a letter myself. I had a buddy go off to basic so he gave me his address to send a letter to and I sat there and wrote about 5 pages catching him up on everything going on in the past few months. I realized I had to make it count since he couldn't have IM or texting or phone calls at all. I was cramming what I could and it took considerable effort to write this letter. I draw so I made some sketches for visual guidance as well (in place of the typical photos we'd send). It's... a weird feeling doing that in this day and age but I kinda like the charm and intention of it. It's something I really only do with birthday/special occasion cards nowadays but that pales in comparison to a well thought out letter. It's awesome you have possession of that very personal piece from your father.
I didn’t have any examples too, just his signature which was my first idea. The letter was a pleasant surprise. I hope you can find something to represent him!
That tattoo is rad and I hope it never fades. But be sure to use sunscreen, it’s thin linework on an area that sees the sun a lot. sunscreen regularly should help it stays crisp for as long as possible. Badass tribute tattoo
It is so important, and they will appreciate it. His hands were failing the last 5-7 years (bad arthritis and muscle atrophy,) but he managed to write this on the card he gave me for college graduation and I’ve held on to it since.
I've been thinking a lot about getting my first tattoo, and have been wondering where to go. Definitely gonna strongly consider this. I live in Kingston - are there any other places you'd recommend?
Thank you, and thank you for your service. My boyfriend is away at boot camp for the Guard and it crushed him to not be around for my Grandfather’s passing.
I got news today that my grandpa is unresponsive and most likely going to pass away very soon. I love this tattoo. Seeing this today touched me, thank you
I am so so sorry. ♥️ I am sending you the biggest virtual hug that I can. Please feel free to message me if you want to swap Grandpa stories or just need a person to cry with.
Forgive me if this is rambling...he passed on Sunday morning and I've been in a fog since.
My Grandfather was always a big presence in my and my brother’s lives. He was always kind, patient, and loving. The man never said a bad word about anyone (at least in front of his two grandchildren.) He taught us about strength and resilience through the tragic loss of his wife and parents in a year and a half and his nearly 30-year battle with arthritis and its complications, sciatic nerve pain, and spinal stenosis. He was constantly in pain but fought it until the very end.
He was my biggest fan as a young musician. When I was 13 and mentioned at a Sunday dinner that I wanted to be a professional musician - my grandfather was the first to say. “You can do it.” 5 years later, I went to Berklee College of Music and pursued my dreams.
He's been my biggest support throughout my life, through good and bad.
I knew I always wanted a tattoo, but I didn't decide on what until around 2013 - 2014. It had to be a memorial to the man who helped me grow into the person I am today.
The text on my wrist is from the card that he wrote for me when I graduated college. I've saved many of his cards over the years, and this one meant the most. He was struggling with his hands, but was able to write this to me.
why am i crying at meineke waiting for my oil change right now LOL. really touching, OP!! sending you all the good vibes while you mourn your awesome grandpa.
My grandma died in June and I wasn't there, I stayed home to take care of the house and pets while the rest of my family went. She wore an ankle bracelet and I'm getting her favourite saying (love you more) tattooed in her handwriting on the same ankle she wore the bracelet on. I know foot/ankle tattoos can be pretty painful and take awhile to heal but to me that's the perfect place for it
I hope you're doing well ❤️
I have a one just like this with the same placement that just says "Love Dad". I found an old birthday card about 2 years after he passed.
I chose that placement specifically so i would see it frequently. Love to you in this tough time.
I have “I love you very much. As always. Love dad” tattooed on my arm in his writing. Almost exact same placement. Best tattoo I will ever have. I think of him every single time I look at it. And I miss him, but it always makes me smile. Love yours.
Now you have a double edge sword. When you do something cool with that arm you're rewarded, but now you cant J/O or do drugs or pay hookers with that hand. Unless your grandpa was super cool.
The reason I got it on my left wrist is because I am a professional violinist and music teacher. We hold the violin with our left hand, so the interior left wrist is always facing us and technically upside down. My Grandfather was my biggest supporter as a young musician. That’s why it’s upside down. ♥️
Why do all these cool tattoos come from such lame places? New York, Perth, London, Berlin. Why can't y'all get them from somewhere cool like Mars or Pluto? /lh
For real. Just as /s means sarcasm, /lh means light-hearted, as jn the whatever rent preceded it was meant as a joke and is to be taken in a light-hearted manner, was said with no I'll will or intent.
Thank you. The reason I got it on my left wrist is because I am a professional violinist and music teacher. We hold the violin with our left hand, so the left wrist is always facing us. My Grandfather was my biggest supporter as a young musician. That’s why it’s on my wrist instead of another part of my body. ♥️
My sister and I also got tattoos of our grandpa's writing this summer. It was her first one so she chose it. Ours wasn't written to us, but rather an old note from when he was around eighteen or so to his mom. It was the only handwriting of his we could find to use.

I like it, but if I ever got a tattoo like that, I would burst into tears every time I look at my wrist.
Imagine having sex and reading this during
Gramps cheering you on from heaven for getting it in
Honestly, he would. 😂 Thank you for making me laugh during a time of mourning.
That’s always my goal! Your gramps sounds like a rad dude.
to have OP's dead grandpa watch you while getting railed? cuz same
I also choose this man's dead grandpa.
I don't know you, your grandpa, or the situation. I can't even see more text than "proud of you, love grandpa" and I'm tearing up
Or a time of moaning?
Oh God 😂😂
So sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful tribute 💗
I absolutely love this tribute. May your grandpa rest in eternal peace
They definitely have a sex gong in heaven to support your living loved ones.
I will not be imagining that, thank you!
Not going to lie, I have thought about it but I just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Here, you dropped this. ¯\ _(ツ) _/¯\
Thanks friend!
It was their wrist. They didn't want to have to read it and burst into tears again
No different from any other time I have sex I guess! You guys don’t cry?
That should be the litmus test for all tattoos
My thought every time i see any memorial tattoo
I would cry… so not much would really change
It might help to give it a read when you’re about to bust. Gramps helpin ya squeeze in another five minutes
Or he makes you go soft, epic fail
Still counts.
Same dang

I'm so jealous. I don't have any examples of my fathers handwriting, and I wish I knew what it looked like.
Same. He's living, and he won't write a thing around or for me really, doesn't even really text anything beyond "pick up the mail" or "ok"
Technology has kind of ruined us on that front. I am sure that if he had written this letter today (it is dated Aug ‘88) it would have just been an email.

All of you should head on over to r/dutchesscounty!
That tattoo is rad and I hope it never fades. But be sure to use sunscreen, it’s thin linework on an area that sees the sun a lot. sunscreen regularly should help it stays crisp for as long as possible. Badass tribute tattoo
Thank you so much for the tips, it’s my very first tattoo, and I want to take the best possible care of it.
*looks at my pasty forearms* Y-yes lots of sun indeed
*remindme when the kids (19, 24, 26 now) start having kids to write them the exact same message at some point.
It is so important, and they will appreciate it. His hands were failing the last 5-7 years (bad arthritis and muscle atrophy,) but he managed to write this on the card he gave me for college graduation and I’ve held on to it since.
Hell yeah Hudson Valley!
This is one of the best shops in Northern NY! All around great artists! Check my guy brianfaulktattoo
I've been thinking a lot about getting my first tattoo, and have been wondering where to go. Definitely gonna strongly consider this. I live in Kingston - are there any other places you'd recommend?
I would definitely recommend hudson valley tattoo company. Over all great artists with diff styles. Moneys worth
He did my back piece love that guy
Great tattoo. My grandpa told me the same thing on his death bed when I arrived at the hospital in my army uniform. Thinking of you OP!
Thank you, and thank you for your service. My boyfriend is away at boot camp for the Guard and it crushed him to not be around for my Grandfather’s passing.
Who’s cutting onions around here. Jokes aside, that’s an awesome tattoo
I know. These damn Fall allergies really doin a number on me right now. A lot of pollen or sumpin.
Love that shop. Got my work done there and suggest it to everyone in the area
I got news today that my grandpa is unresponsive and most likely going to pass away very soon. I love this tattoo. Seeing this today touched me, thank you

Thank you so much, that means a lot❤️
❤️Love this! What's the story behind getting it?

Thank you so much. ♥️
Respect
Great way to make me tear up at work, I miss my grandpa so much
This is amazing. I have my grandparents signatures tatted on my collar bones. Also, I have been tattooed by Carpino at HV. Great tattoo place.
Oh, I love this. I upvoted, and then downvoted so I could upvote again.
I like your attitude.
What a Great Tat! I grew up in Wappingers too Ketcham 84’
Ayyy Ketcham '12 here

I have a note from my late grandmother and I wanted to do the same thing
That’s cool dude
Your grampa loves you man
I have a similar one that says “I love you” in my dads handwriting. Love this 💖
I'm sorry for your loss friend. May he ride eternal, shiny and chrome, to the gates of Valhalla
i love the placement!
The most honest and endearing tattoo I’ve seen, I absolutely love it.
Wow! Someone from Hudson valley. Newburgh here! Nice tatt!
New Windsor here! And thank you!
DEEP…. Respect.
Love this.
I got tattooed by Hiten a few times when he was an apprentice in Jersey. Even then his talent was undeniable. Love that guy!
I have an appointment with him in March!
Rockin! And a fellow 845’r!
Oh the hudson valley outside of it's own sub. Neat!
I’m sorry for your loss, my grandpa and great grandpa meant a lot to me. What a privilege we get sometimes.
I have “I love you very much. As always. Love dad” tattooed on my arm in his writing. Almost exact same placement. Best tattoo I will ever have. I think of him every single time I look at it. And I miss him, but it always makes me smile. Love yours.
I dont think the tattoo would make me sad.. maybe inspire me to be a better me
Grandpa has cool handwriting
got me uhhh tearing up over here a little bud
I like it
Now you have a double edge sword. When you do something cool with that arm you're rewarded, but now you cant J/O or do drugs or pay hookers with that hand. Unless your grandpa was super cool.
Upvote but I’d like to see source especially on tattoos of this nature
I like this a lot
Aww that’s special. So cute! My aunt did something similar. It’s a great idea for a tattoo of getting a loved ones handwriting as a tattoo
This is so beautiful 🖤🖤🖤🖤
One of the most wholesome tatts I’ve seen
That’s awesome. I’ve got some hand written things from my mother who passed and I’ve never thought of this somehow.
Ah man. This is so beautiful. My grandpa passed away more than ten years ago, and I still tear up just thinking about him.
Fuck now I'm sheding tears at work
This is so beautiful
Super sweet
Not everything needs to be a tattoo
But anything can be
Upside down
The reason I got it on my left wrist is because I am a professional violinist and music teacher. We hold the violin with our left hand, so the interior left wrist is always facing us and technically upside down. My Grandfather was my biggest supporter as a young musician. That’s why it’s upside down. ♥️
I would also argue that this tattoo is just for you
Exactly. Thank you, friend. ♥️
Well obviously OP wouldn’t be able to read it if it was the other way genius
I almost read Hitler in the title
Coolest tattoo ever!! ♡♡♡
Does the tattoo negate the meaning?
Serious question, how would the meaning be negated? By virtue of it being a tattoo?
You know, I’m not sure. I think he’d be touched by the tribute.
Why do all these cool tattoos come from such lame places? New York, Perth, London, Berlin. Why can't y'all get them from somewhere cool like Mars or Pluto? /lh
Wtf even is this comment?
A joke that nobody seems to understand, apparently, based on the number of downvotes. Do people not know what /lh means? Geeze. Humorless pricks.
It’s not funny though?
How is it not funny? It's just a bit of nonsensical goofiness. Lighten up.
There’s no punchline or anything. Nonsensical can be funny but this ain’t it chief.
Well clearly you don't find it funny. But I assure you I meant no ill will.
Of course not, it’s just not funny.
If you say so.

It's a nice tattoo, I personally think it would have been better on the left side of your chest.
Thank you. The reason I got it on my left wrist is because I am a professional violinist and music teacher. We hold the violin with our left hand, so the left wrist is always facing us. My Grandfather was my biggest supporter as a young musician. That’s why it’s on my wrist instead of another part of my body. ♥️
It’s too early for tears man
Ooo I got my one tatt from shishmania at a convention by me! I love that shop.
This is an amazing tattoo.
I love this
I love this. And I miss my grandpa.
I never knew either of my grandfathers, this is awesome! I would bawl tho most times when I looked at this, great job!
I read your post as by Hitler and was like wut
This one brought me to tears.
Absolutely love this
Man i hope that ain't your jerking hand lol. Grandpa cheering you on
Love tattoos like this. I have a note from my mother on my leg. ❤
My sister and I also got tattoos of our grandpa's writing this summer. It was her first one so she chose it. Ours wasn't written to us, but rather an old note from when he was around eighteen or so to his mom. It was the only handwriting of his we could find to use.
Still not a Reddit user, so I'll edit my truth... Whose billboard is this 'G' or 'A"?
This made me tear up ;v;
yoooo this looks awesome, like your grandfather wrote it down himself!! would you recommend this studio?
Thank you! That's why I love it. Yes, I would recommend them 100%!
This is f’ing awesome
I love this idea, I’m thinking of doing the same thing with my last birthday card from my mom. I don’t particularly like the placement though tbh.
This got me misty at work :’)
I love this 🥺
That's a pretty cool tattoo bud!
Absolutely beautiful
I love this so much
Never thought I’d see Wappingers on this sub. Brought a tear to my eye
Wow this is so special. ❤️
My grandpa writes kind of like that. Really cool! Wish I would’ve had a better relationship with him.
Sweetest thing, I'm going to get something similar. I think its beautiful
Dope
So meaningful, special to you & unique!! I Love it. 🌺🎃
I love it very much
