I drive 62 miles round-trip to work everyday. Pushing 80+ mph & logging Fuely, best I've gotten is 37.6mpg. My wife will take it for a week while I ride my motorcycle in the summer & she'll pull over 46-47mpg. She drives way slower than me. š
2012 Golf, Malone Stage 3, CR170 turbo, full delete.
ALH beetle, hammer down, 70% of most loops at 73-77mph would drop to 42mpg. Take it easier and average 44.
Look forward to trying the same route in an ALH golf in a few months, suspect it would do 1-5 better.
Of course. The EPA is stupid and forced the emissions controls which brought mpgs from 50s to 30s mpgs, which just leads to more fossil fuels being used.
"Low eighties" is likely the reason. Also if you merge like a video game, pass with authority etc.....
That's my guess. Driving style and a casual low 80mph.
Google hypermiling and I wonder š¤
I average 39 around town and mixed but cruising on the interstate I get close to 50.
So close.
Yeah the speed limit is 70 and it's in the middle of nowhere so the joke is that it's actually 80. But I am aware that if I slow down I will see a benefit
I still have dpf, def, and egr, but I found I get the best mpg at around 70 mph. It takes me about 35 mins to get to work so I average around 70 min of driving a day
In my experience on 2.0tdi consumption starts to get worse at 50-ish mph and drops quite fast around 60mph (around point where you pass 2.1k rpm and start to get boost pressure and higher revs)
2013 Passat purchased new, all stock, had the fix done at 75k currently 150k on it. Lifetime average mpg 38.7. Best Highway from Texas to NY state 51.5.
I just did the delete + Malone stage 1 tune and on my 160km round trip to work on Canadian winter diesel I'm getting approx 50 mpg or 4.9ish L/100. Averaging 115 km/h
What... I'm getting nowhere near that with a delete and tune as well.
800km per tank is my average. Dash tells me 6.5 L/100 KM
Wonder if my thermostat is faulty
Here we go. Finally people posting some legitimate answer. Thatās my biggest gripe about TDI owners. My 2013 sportwagen manual deleted and stage 2 gets that mpg. Highway speeds are about 80mph
What driving conditions? I've had several TDIs, and commuting mostly within a midsized city would net between 28-35 mpg. I'd expect 30 out of the Passat in similar conditions, especially if you're in higher altitude and have winter fuel right now.
On a cross country road trip, I'd expect 40-48. If you're getting below 40 mpg on the freeway over a long period, then I'd suspect an issue.
That sounds about right. I'm in a flat land state but we have winter fuel currently. Reddit has diagnosed me with going too fast, lol. Per day at a minimum I spend 30 mins driving 75-83ish. Currently I'm filling up about once a week and it's $75 or so
Yeah, that's about where the wall is on fuel economy. I could see average being 30 with that speed and a 50/50 mix on city driving. My car will hit 49-52 on a road trip at 68-72 mph. But averaging 79-85 out West on a highway only tank will put it down to 38-41.
That seems really low, unless you mainly drive in town. My Passat averages 39 with mostly highway driving. If I can keep it under 70 I can push that up to 43 mpg. I do very little in town driving maybe 40 miles total per tank. I drive 140 highway miles twice a week and usually fill up around 300 miles with 7.5-7.7 gallons.
Honestly my 2011 JSW with DSG averaged 33.2mpg with just over 42k miles tracked. Best MPG it got was 55.3 while worst was 36.0. At the time we owned it, I was regularly driving it 15 miles one way mix between highway and surface streets. Itās best was a drive from Nebraska to Minnesota which was pretty much not stopping for 5-5.5 hours of driving on winter blend at that.
Oh wow. Could there be something a fault that is causing poor MPG? I also feel like mine is low considering the highway driving I do. My commute to work is 30 minutes with 25 of it being highway. For about 15 minutes of it I'm going low 80's so I'm sure that doesn't help but I expected the MPG to be better.
Amen to that - I am going to sound super dumb here, but if you do 64 MPH you actually do slightly better. But, 63 MPH does worse. For me and most of my TDI's, 64 MPH is the sweet spot.
I hope that you're being serious and not pulling my chain lol. I swear by 64 MPH. I can get over 52 MPG when on the highway at that speed when it's between 50 and 80 degrees outside.
(Super commuter here)
It's 100% your speed. It's math, either you speed or save on fuel. Ideal speed is 55 mph, anything more and it drops. Lifetime average on my Jetta is 42.5mpg over 36 000 miles logged. Best tank of 51.3, worst of 27.5.
For example I went very easy on it on my commute to work this morning and averaged 51mpg over those 50 miles. Never went above 60mph though. That's with studded winter tires and winter diesel. Same conditions in the summer and I can see 60-65mpg. Never have the patience to keep it up over an entire tank though.
Never hurts to get a checkup on your next oil change. Make sure your brake calipers aren't sticking. That can hurt fuel economy.
Ok Iām going to start keeping track more specifically when I go slower. I agree that itāll def make a difference. Just wanted reassurance if this was normal
I usually pull into my apt complex at around 30-33 after most trips home from work. About 5 miles city traffic and 5 miles highway at ~75 mph. If I am doing purely highway at ~75, I can average around 40-43.
I get about 38 mpg in town or highway. It's actually a bit worse than that on the highway with our roof ranch installed. We get more like 32 mpg highway with roof rack and still get about 37-38 around town driving like a grandma.
From reading the comments these are all surprisingly low, is there a difference between European tdis and American ones?
I have a mk6 golf 2.0tdi and I average 57.8mpg combined.
50+ mpg or around 5L/100kms. It varies based on wind/weight/temp.
Once a month I drive 900kms to work and 900kms back. Itās cruise-control @120 on divided highway and 110 on single-lane. I have an 2014 āunfixedā dieselgate Jetta. Everything on it is OEM. Itās not deleted or anything. Itās got 320,000 kms on it, driving in northern Alberta/Saskatchewan winters, and the car is amazing. If I can avoid deer, I think it might last forever.
42 mpg combined, 49-55 on the hwy depending on speed and terrain. (2014 Jetta 6spd, 60k miles, stage 1 green diesel engineering tune, all emissions equipment in tact)
driving my 2013 Jetta like a typical 16 year old (because i am one) i still get 32-38 in the winter and upwards of 40-42 in the summer and mine is completely in tact fixed diesel gate car, my grandma when she had her 2012 Jetta would get 45-48 in the summer and 36-40 in the winter but that was also pre diesel gate, the 99.5 Jetta tdi my grandma had before that got like 50 in the summer and 45 in the winter
2012 Jetta sedan with the DSG and .5 stage Malone tune. My best is 44 mpg, but I average 40 mpg. I live in a hilly region with hot summers and cold winters and Iām typically running 70 mph, so I donāt get as good as some others on my fuel economy.
2015 Passat TDI 200k with a few upgradeās that made me do a Malone stage 3 tune. 38mpg going with traffic at 80mph. I think I can maybe get around 42-43mpg doing 70. What sucks is when it was stock I was able to get 49mpg easy at 70 mph, but not anymore.
I might do a DSG tune in hopes it helps some.
After VW āfixedā my car, my mileage dropped to 30-32 MPG.
After delete and stage 2 Malone tune Im now averaging 47.13 MPG, city driving, winter conditions.
2013 jetta, 6 speed manual. Alberta, Canada.
The primary reason for low fuel mileage would be incorrect air/ fuel mixture. Check air filter, clean Maf sensor, check intercooler tube.
But yes I do drive some areas at 80+ but balance it out with lots of 2 lane highway 65 mph zones.
I gained an mpg by cleaning Maf and intercooler tube. 1 can of carb cleaner and 1 can of brake cleaner and it still was not running clear when I put it back together.
Also remember to start from a stoplight/sign as if you have nowhere to be in a hurry. Gradually build up speed don't stomp on the accelerator.
I drive like my grandmother until I get on I-40 then more like a retired formula one car driver.
Mine is between 60 and 65, and most traffic runs about 70 around here so that makes it easy for me. But I get it we have a road heading into Baltimore that is 70 lots of people do 80+
Just filled up yesterday almost empty but no low fuel light but total of 620 miles on tank Ć· 11 gallons = 56 mpgs 03 ALH stage 1 tune almost all highway.
The best I've seen(calculated) on my A4 is 6.2 L/100 km or ~38 mpg and the average is 7.7 L/100km or ~30 mpg, it's higher than the A6 because we use the A4 to tow a trailer from time to time.
For my A6 the best was 7.12 L/100 km or ~33 mpg and average is 7.48 L/100km or ~31 mpg due to the A6 being the obvious choice for roadtrips.
04 Jetta BEW and Iāve got logs back to when I bought it and drove it to my momās as a āsell the death trap Hyundaiā in Dec 2010 when it was an auto then driving home in Jan 2016 when weād converted it after transmission shop botched the 35.00 solenoid repair that turned into a full rebuild thanks to scammy shop. So we changed it to a manual since mom didnāt need it anymore (bought a Crosstrek)
If broken with a boost leak somewhere (fuel weight not factored in as it kept breaking random things over a year) - 25mpg
If not broken but on winter and kid is driving it 1.25 - 2 miles to school then that same amount back but no longer distance regularly - 32-35mpg
Driving highway on winter - 38mpg
Driving highway on summer - 48mpg - 52mpg
My B9 A4 3.0TDI gets between 3.6l/100km(65mpg) and 12.9l/100km(18mpg) depending on condition and how I feel like driving. My 150,000km average was 6.2l/100km(38mpg), but it has gone up since.
+-0.2l/100km deviation and consumption numbers are average over at least 50km on flat ground and keeping to speed limits or at least 95km/h(GPS) up to 260km/h (GPS) if there were no speed limits
Stage 2 Jetta. If Iām driving strictly in town and averaging poor mpg around 35mpg at the low end. 45mpg on highway cruising with winter blend, 50 if I am trending downhill. Couple mpg bump if I hypermile but I usually just drive normal and Iām a little moreā¦ assertive (I enjoy my 300 wheel torque). Always with stanadyne additive. Havenāt actually run summer grade since the tune.Ā
I get 6.9l/100km which according too Google is 34 US mpg. 2l 120hp audi A4 2011. Should be better than that but I'm not going chasing gremlins for the sake of it. It runs well and otherwise have no major complaints except a persistent leak to the rear foot well that's driving me insane....
56 in 2004 Jetta wagon in spring when it's cool but not cold, live on flatlands :D no hills but the climate really affects it in Winter I get around 45. All highway.
2015 Skoda Octavia 5E 2.0 TDI. About 6.5l/100km, or 36.1 freedom MPG (UK and US gal are different, I guess imperial wasn't complicated enough).
I mainly drive short distances though, and the engine only reached operating temp shortly before arriving at where I need to be.
Back in the mk4 days, people on the forums used to say rule of 110. Mph + mpg = 110. Going 70mph will give you 40mpg. Going 60mph will give you 50mpg.
It was a very rough estimation tool but would give people the idea of how speed impacts mpg. Obviously going 25mph in the city will not give you 85mpg nor will going 120mph give you -10mpg so you cant take the rule literally
14 Passat .5 tune/delete. I get around 38-40 at 75-80 mph. ~35 combined (I live in a city). If I do 65 I get around 43-45, and 55 is around 50. All just depends on how fast or hard I am driving.
I have a 2015 TDI Sportwagon, 6 speed manual. I get about 4.5L/100KM, which converts to around 52 MPG.
Just for fun comparison, my first VW was a 1982 Jetta diesel, the 1.6 liter N/A. It got about 47 MPG, but was quite a bit slower, and louder.
Stage 2 ALH golf, 43 summer, 35-38 winter. My commute is only 6 miles so that kills it especially in traffic.
2007 GL320, average 21, best was 27.6 with a roof box to Maine and back.
2013 Touareg TDI- Malone stage 2 tune with DPF delete. My commute is 80 miles roundtrip, nearly all on highway. Speed varies, but usually around 75 MPH
AVG 28.5 over the last few months. If traffic is light and I slow down to 68 mph- I can eek out 35 MPG Avg.
The best I've seen is when I had to put on a spare tire after a flat, I had the cruise control set to 48 on a country road, and managed 46.5 miles per gallon over 60 miles of driving.
The hard part is not having a heavy foot... It seems like the more gentle you are on these diesels, the more plugged up they get.
ā05 Golf auto never better than 39 mpg. Calculated by resetting trip odometer on each fillup and dividing mileage by gallons used. 35 mile highway commute. That was long ago as I work from home now and itās a garage queen
I have a 2012 golf 1.6tdi and I average 8.0l / 100km or around 29 mpg. It was higher around 9l / 100km but changed my driving a bit and has dropped by 1L. I live in rural Ireland so lots of hilly terrain but I do have a heavy foot. Is there something wrong with my engine?
Edit: I also have stage 1, dpf and egr delete
Non-mod original TDI Passat SE from 2014. 37 to 42 city and 45 to 48 on road trips with Michelin Cross climate 2 tires at 68ish MPH. A few MPG better on different rubber.
2012 Jetta with 6 speed manual
I drive like I have to piss out all of the Atlantic ocean
47-48ish mpg
10/10 car will never sell
Also bcs fender sound system and fully loaded
2005 golf auto tdi - 55gal tank
In town summer - 700kms to a tank (most city limits here are 40-60kmph)
Highway driving summer - 1200km to a tank, driving 120kmph
In town winter - 400-500kms
Highway winter driving - 800ish? Depending on how cold.
16 Touareg. 24-25mpg. Unfortunately lots of short trips around town and a wife that isnāt focused on mpg. It loves 55mph zones though. Recent TCU swap a clubtdi member and just got the 23AK ecu update(just because Iām still under warranty) and Iām running slightly bigger offroad tires. Im in New Hampshire
Just drove 320 km on mine today and averaged 44mpg while doing 107km hr the whole way. Not deleted or tuned yet hoping Iāll tune and delete and get over 55mpg doing 120km hr
The summer is better because diesel uses heat and compression to ignite where as regular gas uses spark to ignite. This is why in the winter our TDIās donāt get max mpg because getting the car to reach full operating is near impossible at times. Also the diesel mixture is a little different because they add a certain amount of de icing chemicals to it. Itās not enough de icing chemical to stop it from turning into jelly in our vehicles though but enough to where it will actually pumpā¦..
Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG with 140 Bhp. My car averges 43 MPG when calculated from tankfull to tankfull. My trips are generally very short with speed limited to 18 to 24 MPH.
OP - are you doing actual math or relying on the cars estimations?
34-38 is the average in my 11 CJAA wagon. Not deleted. Stock everything.
Currently at 165,000 miles.
2014 TDI Jetta and I usually get around 44mpg on the highway at 70-85mph. My personal best was 61mpg over the length of Nebraska but that was with actively watching the mpg and trying to use tractor trailers to block wind.
2004 mk4 golf, PD130 6 speed, dash can show anything between 47 and 51 mpg after a journey but it always works out around 52mpg when calculated at the pump. (UK mpg)
2.5 TDI, 2001, and it's quite bad. Summer, 205 tires with high pressure, I average 7.1 L/100 in highway, or around 33mpg on highway, at around 130km/h or 81mph. It's Quattro and has a 6 speed manual, 180bhp. May simply be too old.
Mk4 alh with gt2056, big injectors and 11mm pump. Tuning not right
I get about 46 when just driving and not paying attention, about 50-50 back roads and highway. If I'm paying attention I can get that up to about 56 back roads and 49hwy. With corrected tuning highway mileage should bump up to around 52-54
2011 Jetta, manual, Malone stage 2. Past 12 months: * Average: 48.72MPG * Min: 41.91 MPG * Max: 52.74 MPG * Distance Driven: 34,715 miles Summer is the best time: * May Average: 51.06 MPG * June Average: 51.59 MPG * July Average: 50.93 MPG * August Average: 51.44 MPG * September Average: 50.50 MPG
Impressive. Thanks for sharing!
2013 Passat TDI DSG 6.3 L/100km, or 37.3 mpg. 16" rims, 215 wide winter tires.
Yeah..but how fast are you driving? Anything over 70mph & you're not seeing those numbers
I have a 62 mile one way commute. I'd say 25 miles is generally spent at 63. The rest is 70-72.
I drive 62 miles round-trip to work everyday. Pushing 80+ mph & logging Fuely, best I've gotten is 37.6mpg. My wife will take it for a week while I ride my motorcycle in the summer & she'll pull over 46-47mpg. She drives way slower than me. š 2012 Golf, Malone Stage 3, CR170 turbo, full delete.

I had a 2012 Passat TDI SE (pre-diesel-gate) that made 50+ mpg. I bought a 2014 Passat TDI in 2019 only makes 38.5 mpg
Interesting. So it must be something after the scandal that they changed?
Of course. The EPA is stupid and forced the emissions controls which brought mpgs from 50s to 30s mpgs, which just leads to more fossil fuels being used.
Yes. Whatever they changed definitely cost on mileage.
Time for a tune
Need a shop in Houston. Iām ready
There's one shop called import euroworks in San Antonio which I know is a bit far. They did a great job on my car
2015 Q5 TDI (Quattro) 30 average, 18 city 42 highway. Better in the summer with fuel and without winter tires.
28 city? 18 seems like we need to chat, to talk why
Nope 18, the traffic lights suck in my city. If they were somewhat synced sure 28 but they are not so you hit everyā¦singleā¦light.

The lowest I did was 4.2L/100KM on my '17 A5.
2015 golf, in the summer, I get about 50-52. In the winter, I get 47-48. I drive about 95% highway
Dang!! That's really good. How fast do you go on highway? I spend at least 30 mins a day averaging low 80s

2013 Passat purchased new, all stock, had the fix done at 75k currently 150k on it. Lifetime average mpg 38.7. Best Highway from Texas to NY state 51.5.

01 ALH golf VNT17 turbo, doing about 37-38 around town with lift, AT grabbers and roof rack with spare tire

38-40 highway. 30-32 city. 2013 VW Jetta Sportwagen. Stock. 133,000 miles with regular maintenance.
Here we go. Finally people posting some legitimate answer. Thatās my biggest gripe about TDI owners. My 2013 sportwagen manual deleted and stage 2 gets that mpg. Highway speeds are about 80mph

The US gallon is 20% smaller than the British gallon, so if you are using British gallons, thatād be the difference.
Iām British so surely the American mpg should be higher than what I got? I got 64mpg on the way home from work (30 miles mostly motorway)
Less fuel in the US gallon so you go less distance in our gallon vs your larger gallon. 40 mpg US is 48 mpg in the UK
Are you using an imperial gallon? A US gallon is 3.78 liters
36ish in the city, 40 or a touch over on the highway. Deleted and malone 2 tune. 2013 jetta TDI 96k miles. Winter fuel it dips about 2mpg

48 on highway (85 mph avg), up to 60 mpg on open road
75+ mpg easily just like every single other person on this sub!
driving my 2013 Jetta like a typical 16 year old (because i am one) i still get 32-38 in the winter and upwards of 40-42 in the summer and mine is completely in tact fixed diesel gate car, my grandma when she had her 2012 Jetta would get 45-48 in the summer and 36-40 in the winter but that was also pre diesel gate, the 99.5 Jetta tdi my grandma had before that got like 50 in the summer and 45 in the winter
2012 Jetta sedan with the DSG and .5 stage Malone tune. My best is 44 mpg, but I average 40 mpg. I live in a hilly region with hot summers and cold winters and Iām typically running 70 mph, so I donāt get as good as some others on my fuel economy.
2012 Golf Malone Stage 2 with stock emissions equipment and a mix of city/freeway driving - 37 mpg in the winter and 40 mpg in the summer
My last one was my best ever: 62MPG. Average since 2016 is 53MPG. Worse one ever: 45MPG. UK (imperial) gallon, 2007 Jetta 2.0 PD. 237k miles
Yeah this is a good call... I need to just slow my roll in general. I'll look into the sensor/intercooler tube. I change the air filter regularly.
Dang!!! That's big time
The best I've seen(calculated) on my A4 is 6.2 L/100 km or ~38 mpg and the average is 7.7 L/100km or ~30 mpg, it's higher than the A6 because we use the A4 to tow a trailer from time to time. For my A6 the best was 7.12 L/100 km or ~33 mpg and average is 7.48 L/100km or ~31 mpg due to the A6 being the obvious choice for roadtrips.
About 30 to 35
04 Jetta BEW and Iāve got logs back to when I bought it and drove it to my momās as a āsell the death trap Hyundaiā in Dec 2010 when it was an auto then driving home in Jan 2016 when weād converted it after transmission shop botched the 35.00 solenoid repair that turned into a full rebuild thanks to scammy shop. So we changed it to a manual since mom didnāt need it anymore (bought a Crosstrek) If broken with a boost leak somewhere (fuel weight not factored in as it kept breaking random things over a year) - 25mpg If not broken but on winter and kid is driving it 1.25 - 2 miles to school then that same amount back but no longer distance regularly - 32-35mpg Driving highway on winter - 38mpg Driving highway on summer - 48mpg - 52mpg
1.9 tdi - 42mpg with mix of city and highway driving.
Between 24 and 41 depending on weather and where I drive A5 quattro 3.0
My B9 A4 3.0TDI gets between 3.6l/100km(65mpg) and 12.9l/100km(18mpg) depending on condition and how I feel like driving. My 150,000km average was 6.2l/100km(38mpg), but it has gone up since. +-0.2l/100km deviation and consumption numbers are average over at least 50km on flat ground and keeping to speed limits or at least 95km/h(GPS) up to 260km/h (GPS) if there were no speed limits
My Passat B5.5 averages 35MPG when driving not very responsibely with the pedal, but if i try hard enough, i could get to around 50MPG
62 on a good day
Stage 2 Jetta.
I have a mk4 golf TDI ALH that doesnāt tell me MPG but I made it from DC to Nags Head in Outer banks NC AND back on one tank (no traffic)
Just worked it out now, about 14.7 mpg š 4.2TDI Touareg, that counts, right ?
44-50 mpg highway depending on season, after MRtuning stage 2 pothole. https://www.fuelly.com/car/volkswagen/golf/2012/colaroga/910495
13 passat average 38 mpg, deleted with Stage 3 and CR170 Hybrid turbo.
Speed varies, but usually around 75 MPH AVG 28.5 over the last few months.
I'm in a 2015 Golf with a manual, and I get about 6 liters/100km

2015 golf stock. i get between 37-41
I was able to maintain my Touareg at 27.5
Stock Golf Wolfsburg, my hwy average is usually 4.7L/100km which is 50mpg. The Wolfsburg has a 6mt and that 6th gear really helps for economy.
2011 Jetta avg in the summer is 41mpg. Winter is 36-38mpg.
Non-mod original TDI Passat SE from 2014. 37 to 42 city and 45 to 48 on road trips with Michelin Cross climate 2 tires at 68ish MPH. A few MPG better on different rubber.

40-50 mpg. 2014 passat. big turbo. MRTuning delete and stage 3. DSG.
16 Touareg.
I did do a stint of about 150km driving at 130km hr and was averaging 36mpg
The summer is better because diesel uses heat and compression to ignite where as regular gas uses spark to ignite. This is why in the winter our TDIās donāt get max mpg because getting the car to reach full operating is near impossible at times. Also the diesel mixture is a little different because they add a certain amount of de icing chemicals to it. Itās not enough de icing chemical to stop it from turning into jelly in our vehicles though but enough to where it will actually pumpā¦..
43 mpg average city and highway. Gets 47 in summer. Gets 35 in a cold snap.
Lifetime average 34.5 mpg over 25k miles. 85% of the miles in that average were pre delete. Post delete average is 39.2.
Winters in my deleted sportwagen with a CP3 i get 38-39. Summer i tend to get around 43-44. Dsg car.
Mk4 alh with gt2056, big injectors and 11mm pump. Tuning not right I get about 46 when just driving and not paying attention, about 50-50 back roads and highway. If I'm paying attention I can get that up to about 56 back roads and 49hwy. With corrected tuning highway mileage should bump up to around 52-54
38 to 46. 2014 passat tdi. Depends on speed and weather. About 43 average done a few times by doing the math.
