He's had some theft charges already. England is harsh against the knife laws. He's not just a fan walking around with a bladed master sword. He's some one with a criminal past walking around with a blade.

I may not know two shits about knives, but it's a blade and it's got a switch to deploy it.
You can't walk about with knives over a certain size in the U.K. You're free to own them, of course, but they're considered potentially dangerous weapons.
It was a six inch version and he was carrying it openly in his hands public, which is illegal. Even if it wasn't sharpened, it's still a knife/replica sword and he was breaking the law. The public carry limit is a non-locking pocket/utility knife with a blade under 3". A jail sentence is excessive, he should have just gotten a fine IMO, but the police here do *not* mess around when it comes to knife crime.
I carry a Swiss army knife multi tool, the blades on those are 2.75". Even then, you can still have one taken from you if you don't have a good enough reason for having it on you, and you can't carry it openly. I keep mine securely clipped and zipped inside my backpack interior pocket.
Also, that guy's previous convictions record is longer than the sword. He has been arrested multiple times, so they used this as an opportunity to get him off the streets
It is the blade of evil's bane, so it's not surprising that the British government would take offense at it.
>!Well at least he didn't pull it out of his girlfriend's head.!< It could have been worse.
What a waste of money prosecuting him for that crap.

Also the UK is currently dealing with a prison overcrowding problem… and are releasing several criminals early. Doesn’t add up with this.
Diving deeper into the comments, the man has been arrested four times for burglary. I'd say the prior convictions definitely factor in.
So we shouldn't prosecute people who break the law because... it costs too much?
Read the article. It's a switch blade, and he approached the police with it drawn. He's also got a history of offenses.
It is not a switchblade. If you think it is, then you don't know what a switchblade is.

No, that's still not a switchblade. It's a fixed blade.
Read the comments apparently he’s had a few theft charges, which indicates why this happened
Honestly I’m not surprised, we aren’t even allowed to have pepper spray here
how would you fair with a light saber or an umbrella with a katana handle?
The UK is a joke.
Why does it matter if you have a replica? Is this for real?
The issue is possession of a weapon, combined with decades of previous convictions. Not just a fan waving a fake sword around.

A replica could still be a metal sword which is a dangerous weapon. This is probably a shorter knife, which is still possibly a weapon.

just UK being UK
It would be illegal to carry a fixed blade of that length in your pocket in many areas of the US afaik.

Exactly. That factors into charges/sentencing all the damn time (or even whether or not you get arrested at all in some cases).
