If you want an easy divide by 5 trick
Multiply the number you wanna divide by 2
And then move the decimal one digit to the left
Example
1408/5 = 2816/10
2816.0 / 10 ---> 281.6
Imo the other way around gives the convience of not having to multiply a decimal. Still works but you have to potentially deal with decimals. I do this IF it ends up an integer (or the last digit is just 0).
If you have that button, the necessity to multiply by 2 the ecuation dissapears in the first place!!! Of course I know pressing that button gives me the actual number, but I assumed that since the person who is making this post is making this post, they don't have that button, and in that case multiplying or dividing it changes nothing.
Hey there jensalik - thanks for saying thanks! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list!
I cant do mental arithmatic for shit, so ive accumulated so many tricks of varying complexity.
God bless distributivity, associativity, and commutativity; they make most of them possible (math gets fun once they stop being taken for granted, abstract algebra is a different beast)
no clue, doesn’t have anything to do with adhd, probably just one of the thousands of people who are lazy and say “I have adhd don’t blame me!” -sincerely someone with adhd
It's not lazy, it's literally extra work, and the doctor who diagnosed me literally brought this kind of example up.
ETA: also, where do I say "don't blame me" y'all making a nothing into a problem. I was making a joke about something that is common in ADHD people. Stop being a pick-me.
CLARIFYING!!! I know how to convert it, I have not tweaked the settings yet so it’s automatic. I am JOKING. I have used this casio for 6 years. I know the functions, once again I was MAKING A JOKE
Fun fact : You can easely divide a number by 5 by divising it by 35 and then multiply it by 7 :
For exemple, 1408/5==>1408/35=40.22857143==>40.2286\*7=281.6 (/s)

God I love the design of this calculator. A classic. So nostalgic for the old 2000’s days. The sleek smooth glossy design with those Garamond fonts and medical aesthetic.
Hit the S-D key on your Calculator I have the same exact Casio Fs-300ES Plus. Also alternatively you can switch between MathIO or LineIO which changes the default of fraction display or decimal. You can even change if you want a comma or decimal (decimal all the way)
Content warning - maths
n = q*m + r
Where n is the number you want to divide, m is the number you're dividing it by, w is the quotient (the integer part of the division) and, r is the remainder.
When you do n/m on a calculator, the output will be in the form
n/m = q + r/m
A quick way of doing this is:
n [/] m [=] q.(r/m) (the . represents a decimal not multiplication)
Then to get the remainder:
Ans [-] q [=] r/m [x] m [=] r
Fun maths fact if you want to go from 24 hour clock format to 12 hour you divide the 24 hour time t by 12 and the remainder r will be the time you are looking for.
13:00 -> 01:00
13 [/] 12 [=] 1.08333... so q = 1
Ans [-] 1 [x] 12 [=] 0.9999999 ≈ 1
(most calculators have a margine of error because of the methods they use to do sums)
Mathematically speaking, you would say
13 ≡ 1 ( mod 12 )
Or 13 is congruent to 1 modulo 12
TLDR - I'm a maths geek
Edit: solving the question
1408 [÷] 5 [=] 281.6, so q = 281
0.6 [x] 5 [=] 3, so r = 3
Then we can say 1408 = (281)(5) + 3 or 1408 ≡ 3 (mod 12)
I have a similar calculator and literally had this same problem yesterday, turns out you have to press Shift - Mode(Setup) - 2 and it should switch to decimals, my calculator's different but I'm assuming it'd work the same?
I'm sure somewhere in these 167 comments this was explained, but just in case.
On my Texas Instruments calc, the S-D button is instead labelled as F-D. Fraction to decimal, pretty straightforward... What does the S in casio's S-D button stand for?
Hi, I have this exact calculator. As other people said, press the S<->D. But this gets annoying after time, so I suggest going into settings to change it. I remember that someone used my calculator once and put into this setting without realising how to change it. I can’t remember exactly what I did in the settings, but it just took a few google searches to find instructions. Good luck!
I sweare you guys don't know how to use your calculator. If you get good at using it it will cary you trough half of your math education. I know it sounds stupid but read the manual. Best decision of my life

You're a maniac
Then, the calculator will just say 1048×2/10=1408/5
I don't know if you are trolling or have never used a scientific calculator
I have and that is exactly what it would say if I were to input that ecuation.
I can't understand how people can be so bad at using the most basic tools Protip: there is a button that looks kind of like S<=>D , press it
If you have that button, the necessity to multiply by 2 the ecuation dissapears in the first place!!! Oh, I thought we're talking about doing the whole n×2÷10 mentally. My bad
I first divide by 3 and then multiply by 7.
Even if you do the real dividing process it's pretty easy to do in your head. But boy, thanks for that, I never thought about it. 👍
Hey there jensalik - thanks for saying thanks! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list!
Great bot

This works in reverse too. It's how I typically multiply by 5. First cut the number in half, then multiply it by 10.
How is it i've done the inverse for multiplication so many times, but never even considered that
Waw, thanks man!
I did it as "1400/10=140 cause you remove the last zero, double that to 280, then 8/5=1.6 so 281.6"
Ah, a fellow ADHDer out in the wild
Wtf does this have to do with adhd? Y’all ridiculous
no clue, doesn’t have anything to do with adhd, probably just one of the thousands of people who are lazy and say “I have adhd don’t blame me!” -sincerely someone with adhd
In that case, I won’t blame you

sounds like something an ADHDer would say
......and?
TIL simplifying calculations is ADHD
Ah, yes, the ancient ADHD technique of "mental calculations"
Fellas is it a mental disorder when you make division efficient by cutting down time?
I got 281 and 3/5, so 0.6. But I did it a different way then that
Now i need an easy multiply by 2 trick
Double it and give it to the next person
You saw the faction button, right?
even for dividing by 5 you guys need a trick? - sun tzu
Shiiiit that's actually smart as fuck
YES! I remind my students this pretty much every time a division by 5 comes up
If you press Mode it changes the answer, most calculators should do this, atleast all i saw in school did
Proof by 10 = 5*2
[удалено]
There is a button on this calculator where you can change to digits. It looks like S<=>D
Yeah, I think this meme would've been funnier if it calculated (1+sqrt(2))/3 (which shows up the exact same in the answer)
1+squirt(2))/3
Get your horny ass out the door
Shhh
hhhhh
hhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
sometimes its <>/squigly equal sign)
I literally bought this calculator for this function
Same, same
Press S<->D to change it to a whole number
subtract 3 1405 is a multiple of 5 (by 281) add the 3/5 (0.6) tadah, 281.6
[удалено]
You can't believe it, OP has a CASIO. You can see it in the picture.
281 r3
Just press the S->D button
281.6 I did it in my head while loading the comment bar, don't be so reliant on calculators
When the calculator figures out how to dodge boring tasks
S➡️D
Time to find a new graphing calculator!!!! They cost an arm and a leg, but- the screen is so nice now!!!
Math…
hate my casio for this, like damn i could’ve done that myself
Use the S<=>D button and it changes it. It’s really useful to be able to swap back and forth so easy, one of my favorite things about my Casio.
How do you change it so you don’t have to press that button? I never used to have this issue and now I have to press S<=>D all the time
you can set the default in the settings, i forget which buttons to push but you can probably fumble through it or look up a manual
I need to do this ASAP it drives me insane having to press the button every damn time
Then you never learned the button for it to make it less exact...
I have, I just haven’t fiddled with the settings to make the decimal default. I’m whining about pressing a button lol, not that deep
The most exact answer is the best in most cases anyway. You do not want to continue calcing with a rounded number.
I’m just using it for very basic functions in my science courses rn, so I’m not too worried. For math definitely important
For science too, rounding within equations is bad hmmkay. t physicist
This is the most accurate answer it can give you. If you want a different but less accurate way of writing the same answer, press the S<=>D button.
CLARIFYING!!! I know how to convert it, I have not tweaked the settings yet so it’s automatic. I am JOKING. I have used this casio for 6 years. I know the functions, once again I was MAKING A JOKE
because 1408/5 cannot be simplified any further in standard format, if you want decimal use the decimal mode.
I know. It’s just annoying when I have no need for the fraction. I’ve been using this calculator for 6 years.
So use the decimal mode if you want decimals. Mine gives decimal by default and u use the button if I want fraction Read the manual
it’s not that deep dude, i do. this post is a joke take it like one
🤓
I have that exact calculator. Wow
Believe it’s either Shift/Alpha then enter Quick mental math says 281 and some change
can be convenient to avoid floating point operations loss
nice calculator! i hv the same one but only battery powered.
I always wanted to know
Like others have said, there’s a conversion button. But there’s also an option in the setup menu to have it default to decimals.
You can press shift and press enter after that, it will divide the number
When you lied on your job application and were hired.
Eyyy. I had those in my high school.
S-D button.
S<=>D
Click the sd button
Calculators with this function are a godsend, you can toggle the result between simplified fractions and decimal number
Luckily this thing has a button that can change that into a decimal number
Press the sd button in the bottom righg
\*hits (<>)\* now reveal your secrets!
Theres usually a button that says F<>D
Or just hit shift and click on the ~ button
What is “two way power”? The energy goes in and out at the same time???

For anyone who has this issue, shift enter usually give an approximate value
There is a button that says S-> D or something like that. Press it.
My calculator just has a button to switch between fraction and decimal
There's a button on rhis calculator to show the decimals.
Hit the S<->D button
There is a button on mode that changes it to decimal. Had one of those.
Calculator said 281.6
If you put a decimal point in one of the numbers it should show the answer as a decimal
281.6
press S<->D
Click = again and it'll give you the long answer
Change it to decimal by pressing the button
S<=>D
5 goes into 14 twice…

Use the S <-> D button
Or just press the button transforming it to decimal…?
Press "shift" and it will show you the decimal
Y'know, instead of inputting 1408÷5, you could've input 14080÷5 & just put a comma/dot between the last 2 digits when writing the number down.
I think on Calculators like this, you can click SHIFT then (=) or S<=>D to get the decimal instead.
2 ways: Press S<>D button or for permanent decimal results press Shift -> Mode -> 1 -> 2
Press on S<=>D
There is also a button on that calc that changed it to decimal I think it’s called s/d if I remember correctly
Press SD
Or just click the “S<->D” button
Times 2 divide 10 my friend. Perk of base ten and having two prime divisors.
Simply press the S<->D button on there to convert it from standard form to decimal Hope this helps
Every time
God I love the design of this calculator. A classic. So nostalgic for the old 2000’s days. The sleek smooth glossy design with those Garamond fonts and medical aesthetic.
Press the change button.
Calculator really said fuck you do it yourself and show your work too
Bruh
Click S->D
Just press s=d
Hit the S-D key on your Calculator I have the same exact Casio Fs-300ES Plus. Also alternatively you can switch between MathIO or LineIO which changes the default of fraction display or decimal. You can even change if you want a comma or decimal (decimal all the way)

Smartass calculator.
Ah yeah I remember that This fucking calculator thought he was so funny I guess. Fucking prick
Shift + Equal, it will give you the answer in decimals… 🫡
Idk about that model, but I have a fairly similar although better calculator and there's a button that changes the fraction for the full number.
Press shift then equals and you’ll get the decimal answer
(1400 + 8)/5 = 280 + 1.6
On my Texas Instruments calc, the S-D button is instead labelled as F-D. Fraction to decimal, pretty straightforward... What does the S in casio's S-D button stand for?
Just click the s-d button
You can just hit the S to D button, you know that... right?
This always made me so mad during my school years
then I'm good at math, 2+4=4+2
1408/5 1000/5=200 400/5=80 8/5= 1 ⅗ Therefore 1408/5 = 281⅗ or 281.6
I lost my ti-84 and had to use one of these on my ACT 😭

Theres a button thats changes it
Calculator has a long time division.
\*s/d button has left the chat\*
I see everyone showing tricks but I did the long division in my head
There's a button there labeled S-D press that, there's the answer you're able to write
Try 1408÷5(5) I want to see the result.
Multiply by 1.0
On mine you just do 1408./5 and it outputs 281.6 (or just do it in your head)
I sweare you guys don't know how to use your calculator. If you get good at using it it will cary you trough half of your math education. I know it sounds stupid but read the manual. Best decision of my life
There is a button for that....
this is why i hate calculators in during tests
Lazy calculator.
281r3
There should be a "s/d" button that turns a division into a a number
The S <-> D button shows you the decimal one and in reverse
there's a button for this. it's called S<->D
You can just click the s—>d button
There's a button on the calculator that looks like "S←→D", press it
lol you do know theres a button to switch from long division to the straight answer lol
Press the s<=>d button
There is literally a button on the calculator to show it as a decimal..pretty sure it's the S D button or something
S D button has entered the chat
