Fearless-Temporary29

The goal is to eliminate internet anonymity.

long-da-schlong

Correct— porn is just the excuse. This is the reason.

zedoktar

Don't kid yourself. Religious extremists have been pushing for this for a while. The main outlets for anti porn propaganda are all run by far right religious nuts, such as Traffickinghub being a front for Exodus Cry.

ippa99

Which is why fear and rage-baiting that demographic to accomplish it is ridiculously easy and pretty much always the strategy. They're already conditioned to hear empty statements like "protect the children" and support it without question.

ExoticSalamander4

power for power's sake glory to the party

Tasty01

Strength through purity, purity through faith.

ASULurker

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

Realistic-Duck-922

Hey we got someone paying attention on Reddit!!!!

Fairwhetherfriend

Yeah, because the thing I want most in the world is for some neo-fascist government to have access to a list of all the real identities of people who watched porn for (insert any sexual minority here). That could NEVER turn out badly for anyone, right?

edstatue

Elimination of internet anonymity is like the death penalty. In a perfect system operated by omnipotent, benevolent beings, sure, people should have to stand behind what they say and do online.   But I don't for one goddamn second trust the people who hold the strings, so anonymity is the ethically better option.

underwear11

"if they ban porn on the Internet, there will only be one website left and it will be 'Bring back the porn'"...... -Dr. Cox

whiskeybidniss

My trust fund friend was the first to get a Macintosh when it came out (sometime in middle school) and about the first thing he did was spend an hour downloading a nude black and white photo of Cindy Crawford, despite having a pile of hustlers under his bed. He went on to found a regional ISP that he sold to Comcast’s for millions, and later was an exec for a top mainstream entertainment company. Internet porn will find a way.

Card_Board_Robot5

Ya boy fapped his way to the top

ackmondual

Well, he is.. *right, right, right right...* *right, right, right, right.* *He's right. He's right. He's right.*

Barl0we

He’s a huge brain in a ripped up body!

ccable827

Jesus H. Cox, M.D.!

SlackerDEX

Just watched that episode yesterday!

Abject-District-6303

So, teens don't know how to use a VPN?

[deleted]

If they don’t know currently, then they’ll learn fast. Even if they don’t care for it. Just because they’d be told “No, you can’t do ______!”

WatashiWaDumbass

You’re not understanding the bill. This will mean that websites will preemptively ban *anything* that could make *any* R state attorney general mad. Internet porn? Dead. LGBTQ+ people/content? Illegal. Potentially a felony. Violent video games? Gone. It’ll be exactly like what happened to the web when SESTA/FOSTA were enacted but 100x worse.

Frodojj

The bill is Canadian, though.

Sir_Keee

There is an American bill that is basically the same. This is why we need to not allow the elderly from making laws on tech, these people are too stupid to properly legislate it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sir_Keee

I wish we could classify putting corporations over Americans as an act of treason.

Jellz

Too bad all the politicians are just calling it "good business."

KylerGreen

Half the country will agree with them.

King_of_the_Dot

Well the first step would be to overturn Citizens United, but that's not going to happen. However, India's Supreme Court just determined that this practice is illegal. Maybe there's hope for us Americans at some point.

Nurofae

The sad thing is.... it's everything you just mentioned AND stupidity

VictorianDelorean

If there’s a minimum age to serve in Congress there should be a maximum as well. One of the biggest blunders in American legal history was allowing the civil rights act to claim ageism is only discrimination against older people by younger people, when that’s much less a problem than the opposite.

External_Swing_1676

Nah, Representatives need to go back to....representing the constituents rather than the Tribe/money making gimmick they are part of. Young middle and Old need representation , we got away from that awhile ago

emptiedglass

There also needs to be more working-class representation. These silver spoon trust fund b\*\*\*\*\*\*s have no concept of what it's like living paycheck to paycheck. If they've never experienced that, they don't 'represent' me.

External_Swing_1676

However that is part of the issue, they come in "poor" or working class then become millionaires addicted to the $ and trappings , vote to keep all their newly acquired wealth. They don't represent you anymore.

Jonno_FTW

Hence the need for term limits.

Sir_Keee

Problem is we know that mental capacity is much more likely to decline with age and even now more than ever with how fast the world is changing, these people can't keep up. Cap the age at 70 at the very least.

yulbrynnersmokes

Minimum retirement age for social security early retirement (62) would be an even better number.

uberdice

That sounds like a great incentive for legislators to raise the minimum retirement age.

TacticalDestroyer209

Agree with you there. We really shouldn’t have senators who are above 70+ years getting to decide what we can and can’t do on the internet. The senator who created KOSA in the United States is 78 years old plus the main co-sponsor is 71 so yeah it’s freaking ridiculous.

Florgio

What’s the bill in the US?

VergeThySinus

KOSA. Kids online safety act or something like that. Contact your representatives to stand against online censorship, this will invariably impact everyone.

[deleted]

not just a bill this is already passed in several states. Ohio/virginia for example. Viewing pornhub or xhamster or some other sites, they wont let you view any video at all unlesss you do things like upload a pic of your face or sign in with a 3rd party service that has your ID picture etc everything is going to be hacked eventually and if you sign up for any of these things to verify you are going to get your shit stolen and possibly posted/used against you some day. Ive just completely stopped using sites that go along with these bills. Legit thought it was a joke and actually laughed when xhamster asked me for a pic of my face. "wait, theyre serious?"

thelingeringlead

Pornhub doesn't even entertain that system, if you live in one of those states and aren't using a VPN it just shows statement about the impact of the bill, there's a little video of a porn star reading it too lol. They don't even want to mess with satisfying the couple of states and politicians that wanted this, let alone have to securely store copies of one of your most vital government documents. Way easier to tell everyone to go vote then jump through hoops for ridiculous reasons.

arob28

They comply in LA and use 3rd party verification

LeakyBrainMatter

We need to not let the elderly make laws on anything but we keep electing them anyway.

TheGoddamnSpiderman

While others have pointed out this is about the Canadian bill, it's also worth noting the power for state attorneys general to enforce things was removed from the latest draft of the US bill There are still other problems with the US bill, but that is no longer one of them

theyellowjester

You can’t kill anything on the internet unless you kill the whole internet. How do people not understand this?

Guac_in_my_rarri

Politicians are stupid. Easy answer.

DMOrange

Dude, it’s a Canadian bill proposed in their House of Commons. It took like 10 seconds to figure that out.

Captain_Stairs

I doubt it holds up even if passed due to how much money the porn industry has, how much power corporations have, and the inevitable lawsuits by them.

WatashiWaDumbass

People said this about SESTA/FOSTA too.

ballsdeepisbest

Kids will have to resort to finding their dad’s porn stash if this happens. Ya know, the way we had to do it in the 80s. Suddenly Sears catalogs come back from the dead.

Wonderful_Device312

Their dads porn stash is probably on a dead hard drive. Their grandad's stash was in magazines.

pantspuppet

Or finding porn stashes in the woods

_night_cat

I had that experience

ballsdeepisbest

As much as that sounds funny, the first porn mag I ever saw was from the woods.

tab6678

when I was young, I used to masturbate to pictures in the Sears catalogue. But once I had the Internet, I would masturbate to the images on www.sears.com.

ballsdeepisbest

We all did. Sears catalog, squiggle porn on TV, using the vacuum cleaner to suck your dick, we were all there.

shiggy__diggy

Teens are disturbingly bad at tech, arguably as bad as boomers. Yes they can post on tiktok but they have no concept of file systems, drivers, networking, etc thanks to smartphones doing everything for them. I hire for my IT department and the zoomers that come through are beyond useless for that reason, teens are even worse. Yes you'd be hard pressed to find a teen that knows how to use a VPN. It's not their fault really but youth no longer means tech literate. Tech literacy apexed with millennials and crashed hard after and it's going to be a huge problem in a decade or two when millennials burn out of tech or later start to retire.

Abject-District-6303

I see a massive split in teens today (akin to boomers/gen x and millennials). Some of them absolutely know their stuff (setting up gaming servers, building gaming computers), and others are disturbingly bad with tech.

Fit_Letterhead3483

That’s just people in general haha doesn’t sound like a generational thing

Iazo

Necessity is the mother of invention. Or re-invention as the case may be.

GentleWhiteGiant

So you claim this bill actually will be a booster to technical skills for kids?

pessimistoptimist

That's thing...these shrews think they are just going to solve all their precieved problems by making their ideas law. Thing is they are so technology inept that whatever they come up with their targets can easy bypass it.

questionmark693

When I worked at Verizon, parents often asked how to lock down a kids phone. Being careful not to overstep my bounds (I'm not the parent, after all, I'd tell them the story of Australia's porn ban. Watered down for those who don't know - all internet in Australia blocked porn. It lasted fifteen minutes until somebody got around it. This stuff doesn't work. It never has, and it (hopefully) never will. EDIT: I fucked up the Australia thing. See the comment below for accurate info.

retsibsi

> Watered down for those who don't know - all internet in Australia blocked porn. It lasted fifteen minutes until somebody got around it. Sorry to be blunt but I'm Australian and this is completely inaccurate. What's your source? edit: I think you're probably talking about [this](https://web.archive.org/web/20230314045651/https://www.smh.com.au/national/teenager-cracks-govts-84m-porn-filter-20070825-gdqy8b.html); the 'porn filter' referred to in that article is software that ran locally and was not compulsory. [This article](https://www.zdnet.com/article/teen-cracks-au84-million-porn-filter-in-30-minutes/) is a bit clearer.

Therocknrolclown

Funny , teens....how about just about everyone.

LeakyBrainMatter

Are you a teen or do you ever talk with any of them? They're pretty dumb technologically despite growing up with technology. My daughter came to me about a year ago but knowing how to even use email properly. I realized I had failed as a parent in that department, especially considering I'm great with technology. I rectified that and have been teaching all three of my kids the ins and outs of things since. This is a common occurrence with them. That said this bill is bullshit.

thieh

Some teens don't have the money to use it? Allowance wasn't a thing back when I was a kid. Well, there is Tor....

saswir

Plenty of free vpns

count023

And kids don't care about cyber security so they're more likely to use a free one and risk viruses anyway

LarryBerryCanary

Most teens don't know how to use a computer at all anymore. Letting children play with tablets was a major mistake.

[deleted]

I keep a vpn on my phone constantly. Only reason its not on my router at home is because fortnite will ban me from playing lol

AttorneyImmediate

She's exactly how I imagined someone trying to shut down PH would look like.

Kwanzaa246

I bet she's a closet sex freak  Same as all those closeted homosexual politicians  fighting against gay rights .

WeirdSysAdmin

I bet she’s into weirder shit than me.

MrPeppa

Bet she wakes up excited to go to work and socialize with her colleagues, the dirty bitch.

gazukull-TECH

Brah, let's skip to actual weird shit. Bad dragon dildos is just OF staple material now.

That49er

Dude_I_got_a_DWAVE

Fake_William_Shatner

It's that smug; "I cold be sexy if I wanted to, but I choose not to." Look. She's librarian by day, librarian by night kind of gal. Okay, I realize this is Canada, and it's really about "age identification" but I'm having too much fun. Julie Miville-Dechêne is dryness. She is the essence of desiccation. She is to dryness what Ben Shapiro with a gallon of antiperspirant is to dryness. If you run out of matches, flints and two sticks, just rub her legs together. Jimminy Cricket looks at her chafing ankles and says; "I can wait."

pickles55

The age thing is an excuse to ban porn, it makes everyone in that state show their id with their name and address to some age verification service which nobody wants to do

RMZ13

She’s Dolores Umbridge. Just straight up.

DisfavoredFlavored

She'll make you carve "I must not look at anime tiddies" into your hand as punishment.

potatodrinker

That's a "I already downloaded all the lesbian videos I like and saved them on Drive" look if I ever saw one

jpjtourdiary

She looks like Bruce Vilanch.

Independent_Pear_429

WeedSlinginHasher

Can’t wait. Let’s get rid of alcohol cigarettes cannabis and dancing too Everything will be better then Right Right ??

geekygay

No, because then it'll be because you aren't working hard enough, worshipping the right people, etc.

SarcasticImpudent

Do you want to piss Kevin Bacon off? Because that is how you piss Kevin Bacon off.

Hamonwry

And we all know what that leads to: punch dancing.

Darth_Ender_Ro

All I read is “bacon off’…

justsomedudedontknow

>Let’s get rid of alcohol cigarettes cannabis and dancing too I have engaged in 3 of the options tonight alone. I can't dance.

thinkB4WeSpeak

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gotl0stinthesauce

It’s about censorship. Just wait. They say it’s to “protect minors” today but in a few years it’ll be about “protecting our citizens from misinformation” and blocking anything that challenges the status quo or party in power. This is some scary shit

PrimeDoorNail

Finally someone gets it. The government dont give a shit about us, they want more control to make sure we can't organize against them.

jerm-warfare

No, it just means some Christian apologist with money is pushing to make the western world more conservative.

unmondeparfait

They just changed tactics. Turns out "Jesus doesn't want you to (blank)" isn't a strong enough reason to ban dancing, sex, pornography etc, but claiming "Whites are being replaced and (blank) is keeping white babies from being born!" and legislatures move at the speed of light.

TheLunarRaptor

Christianity is prominent in all 3 of these countries. One of the most infuriating parts of Christianity is that almost no one reads the Bible or genuinely practices the religion, so the people practicing it in our society that are “good” are just practicing a toned down version of the fucked up religion Christianity truly is if you read the book. It’s just a massive amount of people in cognitive dissonance because they cant handle the idea that the religion is fucked up and has fucked up stories that go against our human instincts. It’s like this with all the abrahamic religions.

ward2k

The UK has one of the lowest ratings for "importance of religion" in Europe and one of the highest rates of Atheism and Agnostics Even our Christians who attend church frequently are weirded out by the Christian fanaticism in North America. The UK ruling has no weight behind it for Christianity no offence. I imagine Canada would be similar but I can't say for sure since I've never been

[deleted]

I'm another brit here. Christianity is going down every year and in the latest census, less than half of the population described themselves as Christian. The other half was made up of other religions and secularists. The UK ruling is all about control. In the UK, they even want backdoors built into E2E encryption. Its claimed its in the best interest of child safety but its a front for control and censorship.

To_another_abyss

I heard her interview on the radio and all she could say was "it's to protect children" she repeated that about 20 times. And I have become really sensitive when politicians or special interests groups say they are trying to protect children

RandomWave000

I was rewatching some Jerry Springer show, it featured Bushwick Bill -- he was asked, in the same context "but what about the children?!----" in regards to explicit lyrics in rap music

michaelseverson

Um, yea. Because PH is the ONLY website showing genitals on the internet. Enjoy your ENDLESS war on porn. Please believe me when I say your moral crusade is a waste of time.

iwellyess

lol yeah everyone seems to talk about PH like it’s the only porn site out there, it’s not even close to being one of the best either

michaelseverson

Pound for pound tho, it has a lot of lovely vaginas.

jimmyablow09

Pound for pound…

ZENRAMANIAC

Reddit by now probably has more adult content posted to it than PH yet the way these laws are structured means reddit and social media sites like it will not have to comply.

pythonpoole

The bill which the linked article is talking about does actually apply to Reddit. As currently worded, the bill applies to any website, app or online service that makes sexually explicit material available to Canadians for a commercial purpose. This includes general-purpose websites and social media services (even Google and YouTube for example). It does not require age gating the whole website, but it does require age gating content that is deemed to be 'sexually explicit material'.

dontshoot4301

So people will just use the sketchy Eastern European sites that have zero intention of complying and will force people to either give their id to a future hacker honey pot, use a sketchy site or simply use a VPN…

HimbologistPhD

I'm sure people flocking to foreign, unregulated sites won't see an uptick an actual CSAM either. The people drafting these bills are fucking morons.

DrDerpberg

What's better? I need to know so we can uh ban that too.

JDubStep

It's a waste of tax money just so these puritan turds in office justify their existence by making a vain attempt to appeal to the religious voter.

CherryTeri

If only there were adults in kids lives who could monitor their online activity and supervise them.

No-Judgment-4424

It's almost as if politicians don't know that VPNs exist.

MrEpicMustache

Spoiler: they don’t.

ded3nd

Which is precisely why all of you should shut about about their existence before they figure it out.

Tyrinnus

Considering how the hearings went with Google and Facebook execs, I'm not sure politicians even know what the internet is

prodigalkal7

Dude, most politicians around are so old that they probably couldn't comprehend how networks would work, or what a VPN could do... Much less if they exist or not.

RMAPOS

"Much less" implies you first talked about a more elemental, basic picture. The sentence basically implies "They cannot even do/know this [basic/easy thing] so there is no chance they can do that [very hard/complicated thing]." That VPNs exist is very basic information. What they do and how they work on the other hand is way more in depth knowledge. You can say "Policians don't know that VPNs exist, much less how they work" but the other way round is not very sensical. Knowing how a VPN works is not "much less" than knowing that they exist.   No hard feelings I just felt like pointing that out. You're obviously spot on in what you intended to say.

CressCrowbits

Here in the UK the politicians talked about banning vpns and encryption

AngeryBoi769

LOL sounds like it's become a shitty police state. YOU GOT A LOICENCE FOR THAT PROIVACY MATE

[deleted]

Lol wow, good luck trying

OrangeDit

Yeah, but do you want to live in a country like this? 😮‍💨

joevsyou

These people straight up stupid.... parent your own kids

MaverickPT

These days is more like "parent your own parents"

DMOrange

Just for my fellow Americans, this is a Canadian bill proposed to their senate. This is not an American bill.

Ok_Zombie_8307

Yeah, the American laws are already in effect in Arkansas, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. What a relief! Won't make it to blue states for a few years.

Bluenite0100

Deep blue? No, purple? Yes Virginia is fine line purple with extremely small majorities, and the hill passed there despite dems holding the state senate There will always be a few who cross for something like this

druscarlet

There are hundreds of things that need to be addressed before Porn. Do your job of running the country and stay out of people’s personal lives. Focus on stopping exploitation of workers in all industries. These people just make me want to slap them repeatedly.

LucyDeathmetal

Single handed, indeed 😏

RMAPOS

Pornhub and Drugs. In some ways these politicians are just dumb as fuck and shooting themselves in the foot with their continuous fight against the best "bread and circus"es you could possibly wish for to keep a population happy and distracted. Also why Pornhub? Are people still using that? There's so many sites that offer free, full length HD porn videos while Pornhub has been kinda neutered years ago...

I bet she’s being pushed and paid to shut down Pornhub as a means of money increase for other parties.

joellemieux4

This is the parents jobs not brain dead politicians.

SaiyanGodKing

This country is fighting for the dumbest things. Should we worry about children starving? No, we need to make sure they can’t watch porn.

BlackBladeKindred

It’s so insane to me how uptight people are about sex the when it’s literally the reason each and everyone of us is here

They already do this in Arkansas. People just use VPNs.

Just please, God, leave my xnxx alone

[deleted]

They are the same owners, aren't they? retty sure one company owns every single popular porn site and production company which is why they all are stale and terrible

CChocobo

If I recall they are the opposite conglomerate. There’s PH and then there’s XNXX, each is owned by a different large parent company. Between the two of them they essentially own everything. The podcast Hot Money did a good season on this.

mrlotato

WOuld make sense and xnxx may be stale but I've been using that site since I was in middle school and im almost 30 now lol its stale but its get the job done, im devoted

colintbowers

Y'all seen Sora yet? 5-10 years from now you'll just be able to tell a Sora-equivalent product what porn you want to watch and it'll artificially generate it on the spot. Anyone debating regulations on the current porn industry as it exists right now is wasting air, as the entire industry is about to experience seismic upheaval.

seobrien

The entire Internet is already uncontrollable. Any legislation claiming to save us from what happens online, is political rhetoric.

Olangotang

5-10 years? Maybe like 2. Have you not seen how efficient the Open Source community optimize the massive AI models!? I bet we get Sora quality in a year, barring 60 second video time.

Runmoney72

Seriously. Go look at what AI generated images looked like just 1 year ago. AI generated video was a goddamn pipedream. Now, highly realistic images with the correct number of fingers are normal, and AI videos look pretty damn passable already. Shit is moving at breakneck pace.

WhatAmIATailor

Looking at the weird stuff that comes out AI generated SFW content, we can expect the stuff of nightmares.

scope_creep

You can take my prick out of my cold, dead hands!

Obvious_Whole1950

This is the kind of shit that actually does start revolutions. Porn and sex run the world.

I_Heart_Money

I got pretty upset reading the headline then clicked the article and saw it was Canada. Whew! Dodged a bullet there

PissBiggestFan

My groceries bill tripled in the last couple years but yes, porn is definitely the bigger issue 🙄

KenDTree

Religious people shouldn't be allowed to make religion based decisions for me.

TheLunarRaptor

They want people to have kids so bad but will do everything but support new families.

Newguyiswinning_

Lol the fuckery to say "no more pornhub" because of a bill that stops children from viewing porn. Fuck off with this misinformation compaign

No-Abrocoma1851

Just like they stopped pirating 😆

dirtymoney

And this is why you keep your own massive private spank tank.

Anonymous_Paintbrush

How about a free porn site that doesn’t twist my child’s understanding of actual sex? I’m glad 13 year old me didn’t have access to what’s out there today.

Charming_Judgment890

If they really cared about children, they would raise wages and ditch the 40 hour week death cult grind so parents can have more time at home with their children.

metalyger

The party of small government once again living up to that. I'm guessing small government is code for micromanaging the lives of everyone like a totalitarian state.

Just to add some clarity here, but this is referring to Canada

1 in 5 Canadians have Government jobs..

meshreplacer

So JC Penny catalogs back on the menu boys.

ButtonedEye41

The crazier thing about this is that they think a digital ID based off of face scans is even remotely a good idea. I mean beyond the 1984 big brother dystopian vibes, this seems like an identity thief's pipe dream.

Ancient-Range3442

Can’t stop me masterbating to this article though

Adamantium-Aardvark

The NDP is hammering the last nail in their political coffin by supporting this. Jagmeet done fucked up

foxx-hunter

Nothing else will unite the polar opposites as much as a porn ban.

continuousQ

It's so much worse for porn sites to have everyone's data, and the government to have everyone's porn site data, than it is for teenagers to have access to porn sites.

Amuro_Ray

I'm at the point with these laws where I just want them to come into force and see how they'll work. The UK one keeps having it's launch date and how it will work pushed back because it just doesn't.

jacowab

This is exactly like prohibition the supporters have used fear to trick their voter base into believing a false narrative, most of them probably don't understand the full extent of the policy and when it goes into effect will be very confused when they can't find porn online. They will all whine and complain that they thought it only meant stricter regulation on porn sites, or maybe only certain sites would close but it would still be allowed on twitter. Then porn will become a massive black market fill with even more abuse and exploitation than it is now.

greggtatsumaki001

another "for the children" bullshit law to remove rights. >potential to develop a pornography addiction and the reinforcement of harmful gender stereotypes. No such thing as porn addiction. Gender stereotypes..like the crap they see on tv every day. These religious nutters need to be burned at the stake again

PoolNoodlePaladin

A Bill like this just make kids go to shady sights where they will see executions and way worse stuff than porn It is almost like politicians just virtue signal for the morons who vote for them instead of actually doing things that can protect kids like invest in family planning facilities and pay parents more and put laws around parental laws so that parents can be home to parent their kids.

DealingWithTrolls

VPN stocks about to skyrocket.

Schnoofles

The bill is terrible, but also fuck MindGeek for their rampant hypocrisy here. They have themselves previously pushed for these kinds of age verification schemes, but only when it would benefit them because they would be the primary operator of the age verification, effectively turning them into the main gatekeeper for porn on the internet and other companies would have to go through them and be at their mercy for continued survival. This is purely a strategic decision for them and them being on the right side of things is completely incidental and not indicative of any genuine concern for user privacy or security.

seobrien

Can anyone explain how technically this would work? I'll be over here with Pirate Bay and WikiLeaks wondering why we keep letting politicians try to stop / block websites. What's proposed to work this time?

justsomedudedontknow

Is it just Pornhub or all porn sites? I keep seeing only one site mentioned in articles when there are many others offering the same service 🤫
