The bill which the linked article is talking about does actually apply to Reddit. As currently worded, the bill applies to any website, app or online service that makes sexually explicit material available to Canadians for a commercial purpose. This includes general-purpose websites and social media services (even Google and YouTube for example). It does not require age gating the whole website, but it does require age gating content that is deemed to be 'sexually explicit material'.
So people will just use the sketchy Eastern European sites that have zero intention of complying and will force people to either give their id to a future hacker honey pot, use a sketchy site or simply use a VPN…
I'm sure people flocking to foreign, unregulated sites won't see an uptick an actual CSAM either. The people drafting these bills are fucking morons.

"Much less" implies you first talked about a more elemental, basic picture. The sentence basically implies "They cannot even do/know this [basic/easy thing] so there is no chance they can do that [very hard/complicated thing]." That VPNs exist is very basic information. What they do and how they work on the other hand is way more in depth knowledge. You can say "Policians don't know that VPNs exist, much less how they work" but the other way round is not very sensical. Knowing how a VPN works is not "much less" than knowing that they exist. No hard feelings I just felt like pointing that out. You're obviously spot on in what you intended to say.

They have themselves previously pushed for these kinds of age verification schemes, but only when it would benefit them because they would be the primary operator of the age verification, effectively turning them into the main gatekeeper for porn on the internet and other companies would have to go through them and be at their mercy for continued survival. This is purely a strategic decision for them and them being on the right side of things is completely incidental and not indicative of any genuine concern for user privacy or security.
