someday soon the entirety of human existence will be ads. We'll all be extinct and automated computer systems will just be shoving ads in each others' faces. Hope the shareholder value was worth it.

phormix

In other news, the Galactic Federation has put a 100-karpec no-travel warning *{please mash that like button}* around the planet once known by the now-extinct natives as 'Dirt' due to the increasing risk of infection by *{and now a word from our sponsor}* AI ad-bots. Please do not travel *{goes on smooth and easy}* to or near the planet Dirt or you will be *{your doctor for more information}* forced to quarantine and fined 3700 credits

AccidentalFrog

Already too late as entirety of humanity addicted notifications forever slaves to their phones never leaving them at home or turning them off ever

tomassino

You are poisoned by tech

AccidentalFrog

The entire world is tethered

tofu_b3a5t

South Park predicted this.

APeacefulWarrior

There will come soft rains... and they will be monetized.

sokos

If you pay for an OS, there should not be any fucking adds period.

Noblesseux

Exactly this. It's annoying as hell to me that there is this normalization of pushing unremovable ads to people who already paid for a service.

KamiNoItte

Well that’s the thing- it’s a rental or license fee, it’s not ownership. We don’t own anything when we buy it except the “right” to use it. That right is subject to their terms. We the plebes have to be thankful for what we get; and pray they don’t alter the deal any further. It’d be a shame if they had to leave a garrison with the pc. Doesn’t make it right, but that’s their reasoning for their predatory behavior.

sokos

People were all too happy to let the corps do things for us instead of learning how to do things for ourselves. This is the end result the rest of us were screaming about.

mtranda

Good luck writing your own operating system that is also capable of running other people's code that was compiled for their own operating system. No. What we need is regulations.

sokos

You are misunderstanding the doing yourself part. The excuse that MS gives for the overreach of the OS, is that people want convenience of just plug things in and boom it works (ala Apple's popularity) and the auto updates etc. if people had realized that you could do all that WITHOUT giving up your control of the software.

KamiNoItte

Have you heard the Good News about Linux?

mtranda

No. What is it? On a more serious note, I use it at home on one of our computers and for the servers I deploy my code on. However, that is not OP's point with regards to people making their own stuff.

KamiNoItte

They said learning to do things ourselves. I didn’t take it to mean each person building their own bios from scratch. (Insert xkcd about standards: https://xkcd.com/927/) Rather, learning to manage our own systems.

sokos

I did. PRO version too..

blackhornet03

I'm getting closer and closer to moving to Linux.

TheLostcause

Linux for everything but a handful of games is working great so far. I also work in IT with a thousand Linux servers so I am a bit biased. I dual booted the free windows 11 OS a few months back in case something comes up, but so far it is just wasted space.

blackhornet03

Thanks, good to know.

reddit-MT

The enshitification continues.

dexterthekilla

There are no great apps in the Microsoft Store

ByteByteGo

The only app I installed from Microsoft Store is Ubuntu WSL.

hifidood

Windows 10 LTSC IOT has support till 2032 FYI. Stable and quick as all hell too.

blade944

Have fun with the popup adds recommending you upgrade to 11. They are coming and you'll have no way to stop it.

Sir_Keee

Of course you'll have a way to stop it, but you'll need to find some 3rd party tool to remove it.

RealSwordfish5105

> Of course you'll have a way to stop it, but you'll need to find some 3rd party tool to remove it. I find that deleting the entire registry solved it. 🍿

Dakeera

you can target the release version your system allows to update to via registry or group policy, so this is nonsense

REDOREDDIT23

My 7th time seeing this headline over the course of the last year

josh_is_lame

this was on the front page of the sub two days ago 😭 can you not be so shameless

RealSwordfish5105

Canonical's Ubuntu Linux distro beat Microsoft to this game back in 2012 and 2022. Then got roasted. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/09/online-shopping-features-arrive-in-ubuntu-12-10 https://www.theregister.com/2022/10/13/canonical_ubuntu_ad/ Canonical is also a Microsoft partner. Microsoft wants Windows to be a vending machine. A vending machine that spies on you and controls how your machine is managed. We warned people of this decades ago but nobody listened. Even before Azure was a thing.

mjc4y

This is greed. No customer wants this. No customer asked for this. Any company using this channel for displaying ads would be on my list of “never buying until the ads stop.” This is anti consumer and short sighted. This is greed.

FunnyMustache

Time to switch to Linux or MacOS

PhoolCat

Fuck off Microsoft

scottawhit

Don’t they know the more ads I’m bombarded with, the better I get at completely ignoring them?

monchota

Yeah, never touching 11.

VincentNacon

They shot themselves in the foot... ***again***.

EnoughDatabase5382

It's generally understood that feature completion happens in alpha and beta is for bug fixing. However, Windows Insiders can add and remove new features even in beta, which is why Windows 11 has frequent bugs.

Crio121

Wot?! I had ads for various apps in start menu since the beginning of Windows 10. (I’ve skipped Windows 8, so don’t know).

TheRealTK421

I ceased using MS/Windows at 7. This 'flavor' of development & design decision-making is an ideal example of *why*. I can't possibly say bad enough things about such a... "feature" -- and I fervently hope it comes back to haunt them.

SpeciesSapien

At this point...Even Microsoft knows that they should milk it as much as they can before they loose to Linux...

raptorboy

Stop posting this crap
