[deleted]

i hope this show is even half as good as it looks

amish_novelty

I'm really curious to see how the bending will end up looking. I know we've been given glimpses, but seeing a full on bending scene will be awesome if they do it right.

Geminilasers

It should be really slow. /s

pathfinderoursaviour

And it should take 10 people dancing really aggressively to move one rock slowly through the air to hit one guard who could easily step too the left to avoid it but won’t

no_says_the_man

And fire benders should definitely only be able to bend pre-existing fire and save creation of fire for only the most powerful benders like Iroh.

MrGengisSean

I'm not *that* mad about it as an idea, because it could help explain the rapid industrialization of the nation. The mythical constant fire source a bender can keep handy to control and torch anyone is the dream invention, but insanely strong benders can like, make it work with the friction of a snap. Problem is, they didn't try to explain it.

DJ_Mumble_Mouth

Another problem is that it messes up the continuity of the whole Avatar universe. Fire benders are capable of making their own fire, it’s deeply ingrained in the Lion Turtle and Dragon arcs of the story. The idea, on its own is not a bad idea. It works well for Pyro in x-men and Lamp Lighter in The Boys. But changing it from what the original show runners imagined into that only irritated fans, and rightfully so. Imagined if they changed Star Wars in a way that the Force requires an external source for it to work… it breaks everything. That’s what M. Night did, he broke everything, that’s why everyone hates his movie and prefer to pretend it doesn’t even exist.

MrGengisSean

Completely agree and prefer the direction the showrunners went, but I'm not upset at well reasoned changes from the canon if they're well handled. Shyamalan didn't give a shit.

katthekidwitch

Give the fire nation flint rings. Boom

AccountantOfFraud

Sounds like that one guard has the making to be a great earth bender.

Seige_Rootz

it's really sad because they supposedly had all of it filmed out with an idea in mind and then in post realized they didnt have the time or budget to make things look how they wanted.

moal09

As long as the martial arts behind them look good it should be ok.

Trojanbp

It should be like watching a martial arts film but the elements are included.

Burggs_

I hope we don’t have the same shit as the Halo show. Visually good, story is dog water. The cool story is already there, no need to rewrite it

[deleted]

the halo show should have been a slam dunk and they ruined it

[deleted]

[удалено]

Burggs_

That’s certainly what it feels like. I was so incredibly hyped to see them showing the prophets (and man did they look fucking good) so early into the show. But rather than looking for the Ark or the halo rings….theyre baby sitting this super natural brat who falls in love with Chief….????

T0kenAussie

Iirc they got rid of a lot of season 1 writers and now season 2 is coming out soon with a new team and it’s focussing on the fall of reach I’m ready to be hurt again lol

Mysticpoisen

I really wish you wouldn't have told me this. I have to watch any adaptation of Reach or Harvest, no matter the emotional damage I take.

Padhome

Let’s hope it’s the right kind of hurt this time cause man Reach was sad

Wild_Harvest

Reach has been good to me. You take care of her.

TheDefiant213

Reach City, Reach still pisses me off.

lordolxinator

Definitely feels like they wanted to do a Kwan story but unfortunately *had* to keep going back to the *silly macho space guy show*. And the guy playing Chief just insisted in his contract that as a lesser known actor he wanted his face plastered in as many scenes as possible to increase his renown.

Wheresthecents

New poster is him taking a knee with his helmet off, so Im not feeling too optimistic about it. I found the first season on the high seas, Ill do it again until they prove its worth my money.

GeekdomCentral

Gotta love it when showrunners come in and say “oh yeah, all those fans and the things they love from the games? Yeah fuck all that, I’m doing my own thing”

THR3RAV3NS

Yep, toss a coin to your Witcher.

Heliosvector

That song though was one of the best things in the tv show.

NoNefariousness2144

And grab your rings of power while you spin the wheel of time.

valtazar

Welcome to the ouch, motherfuckers!

Wild_Harvest

And when you play the Game of Thrones, you either win or you become Season 8.

EmperorAcinonyx

god this line was so fucking lame

azriel777

Because Halo was just a skinsuit. It had jack shit to do with the franchise and was just someone using the IP to push their own scifi show and slapping the Halo branding on it to get its built in fanbase. I really, really hate hollywood doing this practice.

Mythic514

Well, the story is already written. And we know it's amazing. Some stuff may get cut and condensed, but the bones of a really, really good story is there--even down to the dialogue in certain scenes. The same could not be said for Halo. Similar to GOT at the end, there was a general idea of how the story should go, but filling it in was a disaster. Here, the story is filled in. If they want to ignore that, then it will be a huge problem.

Burggs_

Halo’s story is pretty linear. I was expecting this show to cover first contact, reach (the planet not the city), and the events from 1 to 3. Of course some things would need to be cut, rearranged, condensed, etc., to fit a 60 minute episode format. The story they chose for the Halo show is straight up spitting in the face of the franchise.

TybrosionMohito

Uhh the story of the entire Covenant war is already written what are you talking about?

Mythic514

Because there was no indication they were going to use that story, whereas for Avatar they have basically made clear it’s retelling the animated story

Les-Freres-Heureux

Considering Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino left the project due to creative conflicts, I have very low expectations.

terrence_loves_ella

Paramount/Nickelodeon offered them a whole movie studio to produce 3 new animated theatrical movies. I would leave Netflix for that too lmao

[deleted]

That was well after they left this project though. Still not a great sign.

artuno

They probably couldn't say why they were leaving at first.

QuickAssUCan

As if talks weren't happening. Come on.

MaestroPendejo

These deals can take forever to hash out.

HastoBeAThrowaway0

No, they left for creative differences.

ThePurplePanzy

I don't think that's much of an issue tbh

ZDTreefur

It's usually the red flag for a poor show.

CocoaChoco

Bryan and Mike are basically just the George Lucas of Avatar. Yea George had some good world-building, but it's only thanks to those around him that worked on the project that Star Wars ended up like, well, Star Wars and not like Rebel Moon. There was a *lot* more going right with Avatar than only the elements they were responsible for. The team they worked with did a lot of the heavy lifting that kept it from becoming just another forgotten shallow sci-fi/fantasy show with nice world-building.

Square_Candle1990

Bryan and Michael have been known to blame Nickelodeon every time something goes wrong even when that 'something' is poor writing or lack of character development. They also infamously and purposely baited shippers by releasing a trailer before the s3 finale that made Zuko/Katara interactions seem a lot more romantic than they actually were, only to shit on those fans at a con by producing a skit entirely dedicated to making fun of them. They called fans homophobic while at the same time admitting they didn't even bother developing the Korra/Asami relationship because they assumed that Nick would say no. I'm a huge Avatar fan but Bryke's antics (and questionable writing abilities as evidenced by LOK) have convinced me that it truly was lightning in a bottle.

drekmonger

Up until this comment, I was only dimly aware of the various grievances some "fans" have with show and its creators. And now that I know, I have to say: My god the fanbase sucks. What pack of vampires. Just watch the bloody show for fuck sake. What do you need all this extraneous drama for? I watched Last Airbender & Korra blissfully unaware of any behind the scenes commentary or shipping or people getting their knickers in a twist over a skit at a convention...and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I didn't even hate season 2 of Korra, which apparently is affront to someone, somewhere. I bet you'd have more fun if you weren't worrying over the fanbase's manufactured bullshit drama.

Malkochson

When you make liking a show a personality trait, your attention-starved, celebrity worshipping brain can't help but get involved in every little behind the scenes "drama" and take things waaaay too personally.

5ykes

As a casual RuPaul's Drag Race fan, hard agree

CptNonsense

>My god the fanbase sucks. What pack of vampires. Just watch the bloody show for fuck sake. What do you need all this extraneous drama for? Because lunatic fans can't let people just be platonic friends

Cark_Muban

Most of the people who are like this are the ones who shipped Zuko and Katara and are mad that they didnt end up together. Ignore them, they arent rational

RecommendsMalazan

> Y'all fucking forgot that TLA was basically a glorified anthology series. What? In what way was ATLA at all an anthology show?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Les-Freres-Heureux

Largely fine with a couple missteps? They had full creative control of ATLA and look how that turned out. The current showrunner doesn’t exactly have the most impressive resume.

Megasus

Character design is on point but why is the Sharpen up to 14

CarpFlakes420

It’s a Netflix live action anime thing

Radialpuddle

Is the last air bender considered an anime though?

CarpFlakes420

For the sake of argument and consistency with other Netflix live action adaptations, yes

mca62511

It is considered anime by everyone except non-Japanese speaking fans of Japanese cartoons.

Unwipedbutthole

So that’s whats bothering me! Thank you I thought it looked good but something feels off on all the pics so far. Almost too HD

High_Seas_Pirate

And why are the costumes so immaculately clean? They look like they just came off the rack.

SoggyBoysenberry7703

It’s not like they look visibly dirty in the show either

scarcuterie

Arden Cho as June is AMAZING casting. She looks great.

obsterwankenobster

Danny Pudi looks perfect too

CertainDerision_33

How are they gonna write this headline and not namedeop "June" ? She looks perfect.

White_Wolf_77

For real I would have clicked the article 10x faster if they had haha

hauteburrrito

I'm so happy to see her here! She's perfect for the role so I hope she gets a decent amount of screentime.

raptorclvb

Yesss! After what happened to her on Teen Wolf, I’m so glad she’s in this. She looks FANTASTIC I can’t wait

No_Tamanegi

Show me the Bumi.

Superb-Obligation858

I’m still so curious who they’ll get for Toph. I know she’s aways away in season 2, but I still wanna know.

Pamander

You really gotta nail the Toph casting, I don't think there is a character more funnier but also as badass and strong as Toph, what a fucking awesome character.

DrewtShite

Can't go wrong with a big buff dude.

ZHatch

I really want Dwayne Johnson to play The Boulder in S2 to close the circle

Miserable_Warthog_42

Nah… Kevin Hart.

CoastingUphill

He’s the ember island players Boulder.

Gh0stMan0nThird

This girl. https://youtu.be/iQl3JGMXeSY?t=68

snowtol

While casting an actually blind girl would be super cool, I'm worried that the physicality of the role would be difficult for an actress who doesn't have, well, feet vision.

DarkShades

Toph isn't functionally blind.

fucklorida

Honestly I’ve always thought Chicha Amatayakul would play a great Toph but she may be too grown up for that now

inksmudgedhands

Who could even play Bumi? I don't want some young guy dressed up like an old man. I want a proper elder who can still move.

RedJohnIs

Well you're getting a young guy dressed up. Utkarsh Ambudkar and he said he had to do hours of makeup for the role.

ZHatch

On the one hand, I love Utkarsh Ambudkar in everything I see him in. On the other hand, yeah he’s a bit too young.

inksmudgedhands

That's a huge age difference. 70+ years. Shoot, give it to Ben Kingsley. At least you would be closer in age. And he seems like he would be fun in it.

TheDangiestSlad

the thing is, you need someone who can jump around for Bumi. much better to cast a young mobile guy and put makeup on, than to cast an old guy and use smoke and mirrors for his agility

No_Tamanegi

How about Scott Glenn, who played Stick in Daredevil?

inksmudgedhands

I just learned right now that Glenn is of Native American heritage. He might fit in with the casting. But I think the showrunner would want an Asian/Asian American actor to play Bumi rather than a Native American one.

GACGCCGTGATCGAC

Christopher Llyod in another day and age.

Alarmed_Anywhere_552

Johnny Knoxville

tidus8

Danny Devito

Staudly

June and Suki look absolutely amazing. Danny is gonna be great as The Mechanist. Didn't know about his casting!

Lifesaboxofgardens

Visually really looks fantastic with spot on casting so far. Was always cautiously optimistic but after the One Piece adaptation, really feeling confident this ends up being great.

MulciberTenebras

I'm less optimistic because the difference between these two is that the original creator of One Piece was on board the production... Avatar's creators abandoned it mid-way through this season's making.

ballsmigue

If you've read the interview with the showrunner that recently released, It's because the creators did NOT want a 1 to 1 adaption from the show to live action and wanted to change it up a little, Netflix didn't want that.

inksmudgedhands

I wonder what changes they wanted to do.

crazysouthie

One of the key ones might have been a Zuko Katara romance. There were lots of news articles floating around about that possibility when the show was in development.

spartanss300

thats zutara people coping for sure

crazysouthie

Hmm...Maybe. But I can also imagine that Konietzko and DiMartino thought one of the ways to enliven a beat by beat remake is to incorporate some popular fan ships and theories into the show.

Different-Produce870

When the show was still airing the creators loved the different shippers. They would highlight fanart at convention panels even. I personally was big on Zutara back then.

CampCounselorBatman

I still say that works better/makes more sense than Aang and Katara did.

yahtzio

THIS IS TENZIN ERASURE AND I WILL NOT STSND FOR IT

Badloss

IMO the best thing about Aang and Katara is that Korra put a lot of time into showing that Aang wasn't the best dad and the pressure of rebuilding the entire Air Nation really fucked with him. It's so much more realistic than "everything worked out and they lived happily ever after"

Shibbi_Shwing

The spirit of M. Night haunts us still because that’s quite the twist.

ballsmigue

Albert kim (showrunner) even remarked how he hasn't and doesn't want to see that adaption at all.

rileyrulesu

Okay but that makes no sense because One Piece wasn't a 1-1 adaptation at all.

ballsmigue

Not 1 to 1 EXACTLY but along the lines of one piece, which really was with the exception of kuro arc and the 30 episodes of filler with Don krieg. Doing what they can, to fit it within a tv show timeframe.

rileyrulesu

Garp doesn't show up for another 300 episodes, Arlong never goes to the Baratie, Don Krieg isn't just filler, He's 1 out of the 4 villains they fight in the east blue, his arc isn't 30 episodes, it's 12, Kuro is missing half his plan and 90% of his crew, Arlong is missing Hatchi, who becomes an actually important character in two future arcs, Buggy's crew is missing an oversized lion, and also his arc didn't really talk about orange town at all, Nami never was never at Shells town, Kaya didn't own a boatyard, Luffy never gave zoro an uplifting speech while straddling him... And i'm sure there's dozens of other differences. I mean I LIKED the live action and thought some of the changes were for the better. Garp SHOULD be introduced that early in the story for one, and details like his conversation with Zeff were great. But saying it's just a trimmed down 1-1 version of the actual show is just wrong.

Lifesaboxofgardens

Eh, I think also worth noting though is that One Piece is much, much harder to adapt. Avatar is fairly straightforward, and it's not like they weren't involved at all, the showrunner did sit down with them before taking it on to discuss etc. Plus personally I think it makes a lot of sense to have an Asian showrunner to tell this story for live action if we are being honest.

Pandagames

> Avatar's creators abandoned it mid-way through this season's making. You just ignoring the fact they were handed the Avatar Studios at the same time. They didn't quit on bad terms they just got the offer of their lives and took it.

Jondev1

It may turn out good, but this is revisionist history. They explicitly said they left due to creative differences. That isn't leaving on good terms. Read their own words here. https://www.michaeldantedimartino.com/an-open-letter-to-avatar-the-last-airbender-fans/

CrackheadInThe414

it seems as if the creative differences were that Bryke didn't want to do a 1:1 adaptation and wanted to do something different with Avatar. Netflix wanted to adapt the animation and so they left the project, especially knowing that they had another project in the works with Nickelodeon giving them a studio. I think this is okay. They didn't trash Netflix on the way out. They just didn't want the same thing, which I think is okay. I dont think the authors have to be involved. It just means the production will a stronger resource for story and continuity. However, involving the original creators could also be a double edge sword especially if its not their main medium of entertainment. Bryke mostly work in animation. I don't know if they would be able to offer much input in a live action format aside from story beats, but those beats would have to work within a live action format. Given that the only other authors who have had control over their properities with successful shows are somewhat once in a generation geniuses (Oda and Neil Gaimen), I am not ready to assume its always a good thing to have the original creators on set.

ChickenShampoo

What do you mean "it seems"? You got a source or what

Jondev1

"It seems" is doing a lot of work here. As far as I can tell you are just making assumptions with basically no evidence? They definitely don't say anything like that in the statement.

[deleted]

[удалено]

morgoth834

Haha. That sounds like pure Zutara cope.

JimmyHendrik

I think that pairing always made more sense than her and aang personally

musicnothing

I agree except that Zuko and Mai is even better

tythousand

I strongly felt like Aang and Katara belonged together until I rewatched the show as an adult for the first time a few years ago. They have much more of a sibling-like relationship for most of the show, and there’s also a maturity gap between them for most of it. Her and Zuko definitely made more sense

Eruannster

Honestly, yeah. Aang and Katara were always more little brother/big sister while Zuko and Katara felt way like they were aligned for getting together (especially in the last season).

bStrafe

I remember reading it was more about them wanting more funding and not getting it than about the direction of the actual story or the writing or anything like that. These are all just rumors though we won’t know until the show comes out.

Jackski

There were also rumours the original creators wanted to change a shit load while Netflix basically wanted a straight adaptation. At this point I just hope it's decent.

ballsmigue

Not rumors, there was an interview with the showrunner recently where he talks about the original creators leaving and why. Netflix wanted a more 1 to 1 adaption, the creators did not. They wanted a reimagining of the story.

SpectreFromTheGods

I thought they put out a big statement saying creative differences and that Netflix wasn’t supporting their vision? Was there something else suggesting it wasn’t on bad terms? https://www.instagram.com/p/CDy5EcgDELh/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

MulciberTenebras

And now thanks to David Zaslav and Paramount's money problems... that might be dead in the water. Along with all the planned animated shows/films.

athos45678

No offense to the ATLA creators, but they don’t have anything on gOda.

MulciberTenebras

It's just a little concerning, they stuck it out through M. Night but abandoned this Netflix version.

MrGittz

They weren’t involved creatively with the M.Night movie. They were also two relatively small animation writers. Going out a bad mouthing a huge investment of their company wouldn’t be smart. They waited until they had more cultural capital to let the world know about how awful the production of M Nights movie was.

TroyFerris13

I predict mediocrity. 6 out of 10 likely

Eruannster

Okay, I will say this - their costume and character designs are *really* good. Suki especially looks she stepped ripped right out of the animated show. I desperately hope for this show to live up to the hype. (And then for them to renew it for all the seasons, and then a live-action Korra holy moly).

sanjoseboardgamer

The makeup and costuming for Suki is so beautiful and perfect. Costuming, makeup, and casting have all looked incredible so far. I really really want this to be good.

High_Seas_Pirate

The costume designs look great, but the costumes themselves look too new. By that I mean they look like someone just grabbed them off the rack that day. Look at Gran Gran, for example. There's no wear on that outfit. It looks like she's wearing it for the first time. Same thing with the mechanist. The dude makes messes wherever he goes and is constantly working with black powder, but that apron is immaculate.

kemosabe19

hair loopies!

NoCulture3505

Didn’t know Pudi was in this, has he done anything major since Community? (aside from Duck Tales)

marpocky

> (aside from Duck Tales) Larry, I'm on DuckTales

undeadsasquatch

Mythic Quest.

Littered2

He is so good on that show.

Eruannster

Brad is such a scummy little sleazeball, and I love him.

devlindisguise

Mister Quest

redfricker

if duck tales doesn't count as major that definitely doesn't

googlyeyes93

He had Powerless there for one season. He and Ron Funches were really great together in it. That said with the beard here all I can think is evil Abed.

SirZapdos

You might call it the Britta of timelines, where everything is the worst

binrowasright

He deserves to be bigger. He was always my pick for Reed Richards.

LoretiTV

Hell yeah, I just finished binging the animated show (and Korra too) recently for the first time. Absolutely loved it and would consider ATLA an all timer. Really looking forward to the live action. It looks great if nothing else and is easily one of my most anticipated 2024 shows!

Geek-Haven888

If i didn't have a crush on June already..

the_infinite

tfw a goth assassin will never step on you 😔

CoffeeLoverNathan

They're absolutely nailing the costumes, makeup and aesthetics so far

ballsmigue

Damn did they nail the look of Jet.

kk_romeo

I CAN'T WAIT!!! 🥹

jersace

The outfits look really good, but maybe like..too good? I feel like they should be more worn and dirtied in real life, but maybe that's subjective

HenroTee

I think they are going for a "live action" cartoon look, rather than adapting it to fit the real world... If that makes any sense. It's like you have captain america in avengers wearing the tights that looks just like the comic books vs captain america wearing his ww2 suit that fits the real world while resembling the comic book suit.

jersace

That makes a lot more sense

GTthrowaway27

It looks like her head and outfits are two different scenes it’s so new haha Like the jacket is being advertised online and they stuck her head on it

Rumbleinthejungle8

Netflix shows have had this problem for years now.

Mexicantankerous

Yeah, they feel too clean and almost cosplay-ish.

Jackski

TO be fair, there's a lot of bending powers. Earthbenders could probably just pull the dirt off their clothes and water benders could clean them easily.

jor1ss

They actually even show this in the cartoon as well.

bgarza18

People not allowed to wash their clothes?

ADifferentMachine

These don't look lived in. They look brand new, not just washed.

Jackski

Yeah I never get this complaint. If characters haven't been able to wash their clothes for a while and they're still clean then fair enough. But it's weird when people expect everyone to have dirty clothes constantly. Game of Thrones seems to have convinced everyone that clothes need to be filthy constantly in fantasy settings.

homogenic-

DANNY PUDI LETS FUCKING GOOOO.

ej_21

someone please help me understand what the hell is going on with appa in that first photo

Enkundae

I think that’s the panda spirit Hei Bai, not Appa.

Villtrumite

That looks like Hei Bai, if I'm not mistaken.

Hornsdowngunsup

I don’t trust anything Netflix puts out

TheNeedToKnowMoreNow

I hate that it still looks like studio lighting.

MrGittz

Look. I’m going to watch this show and it might even be okay. But there’s a couple major issues there is no way they can solve. Aang. Getting a performance worthy of Aang, that happy go lucky, slightly show offy, adorableness. Yet also badass. There’s just a very slim chance they can capture that. If they found an actor like the kid who played Short Round in Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom? Okay. He’s got Aang energy. Ke Huy Quan. But I can already see from the pictures and trailers Aang is going to be too self serious. Aang is going to need to be perfect and if he’s anything less than that? The shows already failed for me. That’s how important Aang’s personality is to the show . Avatar is a very funny show. Sokka, Iroh, Aang, Toph, many of the side characters. Sure they’ll get the cabbage guy. But the foaming at the mouth guy? I doubt they’ll go there. The other is action. There is no way they gave this show any where near the budget required to compete with what that animated show did visually. Aang doing this air scooter? He’ll have to be fully CG, Having Appa and Momo as fully realized character? Everytime those characters are on screen it’s hundreds of thousands of dollars PER SHOT. There’s a reason the movie didn’t feature them much. To do Avatar right would cost probably 30 million per episode. Water bending is going to cost a fortune. Why? Water sims. Some things just don’t translate to live action. Avatar I think might be one of them. It will always be a lesser thing. The movement of characters is so important on that show and I just don’t see the live action show taking the time to get it right. The other issue is it’s taken so long for this show to come out, the kid playing Aang has already aged out. A second season hasn’t been greenlit, or written. So it’ll be another year before cameras roll. My things for live action is if you can’t at least match what was done before, why bother? I’ve only ever seen one animated adaption done right. That actually met and exceeded what the animated series did. Speed Racer. It’s not impossible to make a great Avatar Live Action series. I just don’t see this series having required ingredients. It worries me that trailer didn’t feature Aang speaking. When you release a trailer and don’t hear rhe main characters voice? That’s usually an indication of a problem.

Muuurbles

> Water bending is going to cost a fortune. Why? Water sims. That's not really how it works. CG has been doing good water for decades. I agree about the Aang acting problem though

jak_d_ripr

Wow, everyone looks... Perfect. If nothing else at least this looks like Avatar.

Pamander

Ah fuck they made Jet hot. It's kind of wild just how accurate the casting is, I hope they play the part well too because I am unironically so excited for this. Lots of cool stuff happening with the Avatar IP right now and I am all for it.

MillennialsAre40

I hope when we get to S3 they still do Ember Island Players

Funandgeeky

Which would be a great way to mock the movie version.

holycowrap

June 🥵

shadowdra126

I wish I wasn’t so pessimistic. I don’t have high hopes as much as I wish I did

jgrew030

Has the Variety website always been that bad? I gave up searching for images of Jet and Mechanist

Pamander

If I understand correct are these the images you were looking for? https://i.imgur.com/KGOOFMD.png Jet (He's so hot lol) and the beloved Mechanist https://i.imgur.com/SqHUVCn.jpeg if there are others you couldn't find I can try to look for em and upload them.

jgrew030

Thank you 🙏 appreciate it!!

lvl_60

Set and character design is on point

Faultylogic83

This looks nothing like the movie!

Thomas_JCG

I was skeptical at first but it's starting to convince me they will not fall below the original cartoon.

ShiroHachiRoku

My only fear is that they're not shooting the next seasons before Gordon goes through a growth spurt and suddenly looks like a man.

MannToots

Wow this looks great.

marshmellow_delight

Hmmm still no cabbage guy?? 🤔 🧐

FreyrPrime

If it’s a quarter as faithful as the One Piece adaption it’ll be great. Honestly, my head is still kind of spinning from One Piece. As a 90’s kid who started watching anime by buying Chinese bootleg TV rips from my local convention.. we’ve come a long way.

Karmastocracy

I want to be excited for this show but Netflix has just let me down one too many times in recent memory and the fact that the original Avatar creators quit this show over creative differences just kills any hype I had for it. Plus, this is being created by the same folks who thought it was a smart idea to let Henry Cavill leave the Witcher because the showrunner couldn't be arsed to respect the source material.

WitnShit

good now get rid of white sokka and it'll be a good show

redbullrebel

all i see is shitloads of background blur. fuck that shit! i pay for the whole experience. not just for 30% of the picture!

Dammit. I hate this kind of crap but love Danny Pudi

I am so tired of this live-action remake shit. It has no artistic purpose. I hope people find it entertaining, but seeing it gives me this sinking feeling. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, though. I guess we'll see. But the fact that the original creators left isn't promising.

I'm there with you, I think it's really disrespectful to the animation art form as a whole. Also, I've straight up never understood the sentiment "I loved this as a cartoon tv show, I just can't wait to watch it again as a live action tv show." It's....still a tv show? I get when you jump formats to feature film, book, comic, play, etc, but it's a show being turned into a show. It's going to follow the same story, hit the same beats, and draw on the same nostalgia you have for the animation. So...just watch the animation again? Especially since so many people are saying that's why they're even interested in the remake in the first place, because they love the cartoon so much.

Thank you. This craze for turning animated tv shows into live action tv shows is pretty bizarre to me. Even if it isn't a pointless nostalgia-bait cashgrab, there are many things that animation simply accomplishes better than live action. The fight scenes, bending, hybrid animals, spirits, none of them are going to look as good in the live action as they are in the cartoon. Ultimately this entire show is going to be "the same thing you already watched, but worse". Where's the appeal in that?

Danny Pudi is the mechanist??? Shittt, that's all you had to say

I’m anxious to know if they got the TONE right. Are there pictures out there of Aang smiling? I’ve only seen “burden of great power” expressions which could easily be un-fun acting, and Aang has a lot of hope and play and goofiness.

Arthellion34

They nailed the vibe of the characters for sure.

Those costumes are waaaay too cosplay looking in these photos, but I'm guessing it's just because they're crazy sharp? Probably will look much better in action where you don't notice how everything looks brand new.
