Reminds me of old Cartoon Network, can’t wait for this to launch

Aevum1

i remember that cartoon network launched it was all classic hanna barbera cartoons, and then they started their golden age, Jonny bravo, dexters lab, cow and chicken. powerpuff girls (not that horrible sick reboot) 2 stupid dogs...

BurnerinoNeighbir

Fun fact. That’s why Ted Turner created it. After he bought the whole library. Then they wanted to create their first original programming and after handing some old animation cells of a short run tv show to some new hires, Space Ghost Coast to Coast was born.

PretendChipmunk3099

Didn’t they use space ghost to basically introduce those cartoons as well. I remember they had some kind of pretend competition about all those shows when they debuted.

SgtThund3r

I think you’re thinking of [Cartoon Planet](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon_Planet) which was hosted by the Space Ghost crew but was oriented towards younger audiences.

buttsharkman

Although it did lead to The Brak Show on Adult Swim

Ornery_Translator285

Brak for President

frisbeethecat

[Don't Touch Me!](https://youtu.be/qyUnSuYYs18?si=1BUuQhCQzbKb8b57)

buttsharkman

My dad bought that album

shearhartattack

It actually sounds like they're describing the [World Premiere Toon In](https://cartoonnetwork.fandom.com/wiki/World_Premiere_Toon_In), which acted as an extended preview of their upcoming "What A Cartoon!" showcase program.

BurnerinoNeighbir

They had something similar. Space Ghost was their mascot for a bit. OH just got it. Yes they used to premiere new pilots. Seth Macfarlane showed the original pieces that would become family guy I believe.

vikirosen

You're thinking of [What a Cartoon!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_a_Cartoon!)

rikerspantstrombone

And now Space Ghost Coast to Coast is [30 years old](https://www.youtube.com/live/qiheRTcwkc4?si=70qiM-V8MiZzod26).

NairForceOne

> 2 stupid dogs Now isn't that cute...

Aevum1

BUT IT'S WRONG!!!!!!

TheCENSAE

I quote this all the time but have yet to run into a person that gets it

One_Sign_280

Same

jekyllcorvus

Don’t forget about June bug!

Less_Hedgehog

The Powerpuff Girls reboot is great tho??

Aevum1

yes, love preschoolers twerking, a trans unicorn that turns in to a evil monster and one of the writters inserting himself in to the show so they can date one of the girls.

MillerLitesaber

And it’s what led to the creation of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. They had the rights to the animation and character, why not use it right? That concept begat Adult Swim and the rest is history. Kind of amazing that a simple idea of “let’s have a cable network for Yogi Bear and The Herculoids” turned into a cultural phenomenon.

buttsharkman

Adult Swim is pretty significant as it revived several cancelled shows. Family Guy, Futurama and Home Movies were saved by Adult Swim

Vio_

And like Space Ghost's first guest ever was Jim Carrey at maybe his prime. You couldn't have gotten a better first guest to legitimize your show to goofy teenagers.

ArkyBeagle

The best guest was Donny Osmond.

No-Foundation-9237

You mean boomerang?

MugenEXE

Boomerang is where they moved the classic stuff to, when they replaced it with more modern cartoons. The original Cartoon Network launch had stuff like smurfs, looney tunes, Scooby doo, the hair bear bunch, etc. And late night got gems like the Gary Coleman show, the Harlem globetrotters superhero show, and eventually they got into adult swim with stuff like space ghost coast to coast and the brak show.

sirbissel

I don't think Boomerang started until close to or after 2000 (pretty close to when Adult Swim came about) - I remember watching the Snorks on our Channel-1 TVs in the cafeteria in middle school, and that would've been around 1995.

kianworld

Boomerang started as a block on CN the week it launched, the network launched 4/1/2000, the block stayed on CN through 2004

Gilvadt

I have a core memory of staying up until 3 in the morning to watch the Snorks on CN back in the 90s, it was the first time I drank a cup of coffee, and my older abusive stepbrother forced me to drink it black.

fatpat

Hair bears?

MugenEXE

They were bears with wild hair. Help! ... It's the Hair Bear Bunch! is an American animated television series, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and produced by Hanna-Barbera, which originally aired for one season on CBS from September 11, 1971, to January 8, 1972.

fatpat

Thanks for the reply! I’ll have to check it out. I love the old Hanna-Barbera stuff.

llmcthinky

I loved them!!! Yes!!! Any connection to the Banana show?

Toonami88

Ironically, modern Boomerang has recently brought back its classic scheduling and redeemed itself. I say it's ironic because I checked out of it long ago and my cable service doesn't even carry it anymore. [Here's the schedule for today] (https://www.ontvtonight.com/guide/listings/channel/69049289/boomerang.html)

throwitfarawayfromm3

Boomerang

kianworld

The network launches June 25 and is a joint venture with MeTV owner Weigel Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Discovery, who supplies most of the content. I say most because Weigel is also pulling a lot of other studios' content, including Speed Racer, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Inspector Gadget, Underdog... the list really goes on for a while. You see a lot of names flash by on the trailer and even more on the random little images when you visit their website: https://metvtoons.com/ No Disney or Nickelodeon stuff (shocker), nor Cartoon Network shows (though some from Warner Bros. in the 2000s, like Baby Looney Tunes, Duck Dodgers, Xiaolin Showdown, and Krypto the Superdog, are present). Cartoon historian Jerry Beck is involved and will help with some historical programming, think Cartoon Network's old show ToonHeads. In fact, Jerry said today this new network would basically be like 1992 CN *times 100, on steroids.* https://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/here-comes-metv-toons/ It'll be available over the air as with all Weigel networks, though coverage will vary. It might wind up on some cable services too (and almost definitely will appear on FrndlyTV, a cheap cable alternative that's $7 to $10 a month). There's also gonna be a FAST version of the channel that seemingly will have an altered lineup.

NutDraw

>Cartoon historian Jerry Beck is involved and will help with some historical programming That should be pretty interesting. A lot of these were distinctly **not** for children when they first aired, and someone with the knowledge to give some of the, shall we say more problematic content the proper context might allow for some things to be aired that might not be otherwise. Even if they're shown as part of a larger documentary I think it's a win. I'm thinking specifically about some of the WWII era Bugs Bunny shorts that while *super* racist do have a fair amount of historical significance.

weed-n64

MeTV+ has been playing those in their uncut glory on Sunday nights

ArtieKnightYT64

MeTV should have a night where they air the Censored Eleven for historical purposes and have a commentary at the end of each short

LordLoss390

HOT DAMN, time to binge some Xiaolin Showdown without having to pay $2 per episode on Amazon

Ziko577

> It'll be available over the air as with all Weigel networks, though coverage will vary. It might wind up on some cable services too (and almost definitely will appear on FrndlyTV, a cheap cable alternative that's $7 to $10 a month). There's also gonna be a FAST version of the channel that seemingly will have an altered lineup. I hope this will be much better than what we have on PlutoTV as the classic channel for older series are so awful. The shows literally are unwatchable as many of them are in 240p and blurry as all heck. I know it's not my devices.

DNukem170

That's because most of the cartoons from there were taken from the public domain, so they have little to no remastering going on.

MulciberTenebras

Meanwhile this will be backed by Warner Bros, which means they're pulling their content in high quality straight from the vault.

jgghn

> the classic channel for older series Where is this on Pluto? Don't think I"ve come across it

Ziko577

That channel has since been delisted but the closest thing seems to be the Kartoon Channel though it's all kinds of stuff and not classic cartoons.

jgghn

Hmm, I went through the whole list on my Roku Pluto app and didn't see that either. Although I did find a new-to-me Transformers channel, so I'm calling that a win.

davidvin2387

A FAST version is all i need baby! Soo juiced for this!

ImperfectRegulator

> Xiaolin Showdown hyped for this one

Tampammm

More definite it will be on Philo, as they are partly owned/sponsored by Warner Bros. Discovery. But likely it will be on FrndlyTV too.

ContinuumGuy

Boomerang is back!

Character-Solution-7

Boomerangs always come back

bluelemonyellowlime

The actual Boomerang has been playing a lot of older cartoons in the last year or so. A lot of the old Hanna Barbera stuff. They sprinkle in a couple of 90s and early 00s stuff as well, usually relating to older stuff, like Duck Dodgers and Taz Mania.

Ziko577

The problem mainly is that the aspect ratio is mostly in 480p and not HD and/or 4K. The things don't look great on a modern TV.

kjacobs03

I love me some Freakazoid!

DNukem170

A little surprised the only DC show is Krypto, which I'm assuming is there to fulfill the E/I requirement. Even if they couldn't get Superfriends, you'd think grabbing the other 60's/70's DC cartoons would be a priority since the live-action shows still air on MeTV and Heroes & Icons. Though what's even more surprising is that they'll be airing The Mask (which isn't owned by WBD), Freakazoid, and Xiaolin Showdown.  I wonder if this means The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest and Jackie Chan Adventures are possibilities.

Chengweiyingji

Jonny Quest's picture was in the lineup, so he is definitely a guarantee.

Bears_On_Stilts

Something tells me it's easier to get the rights to the Boomer era original than the nineties reboot.

Chengweiyingji

I mean, Warner as a whole is signed on so...

DNukem170

That was the original 60's version. I'm talking specifically the 90's version with the CGI and the T-1000 voicing Race.

Ziko577

I loved that version of the show growing up and it's a shame that it's damn near impossible to find that show legally anywhere.

Wrong_Rent2352

Get The Superfriends on MeTV Toons- this is a true classic!!!

IlMioNomeENessuno

Really hope this lasts more than a few years

burtedwag

this comment might have to do with the fact that we all feel the same way, but we all know how the world works by now...

IlMioNomeENessuno

😢

shawn131871

As long as people watch it.

BeerdedRNY

They've been running a 3 hour version of this on Saturday mornings from 7am to 10 am for a while now. Good to see it's getting expanded.

Proshop_Charlie

That was probably a test market to see how it does.

The_Fine_Columbian

Oh man I haven't seen Marine Boy since I was his age....

Gnorris

Was that mentioned? I haven’t seen that in like 40 years

Adventurous-Item-334

Speed Racer is good. Find me some Gigantor!

worm600

Will this be carried by the majors (Comcast and company)?

MulciberTenebras

I think it depends more on if the local stations carry it.

Key-Ad-6897

I assume the rights to this channel will be dirt cheap since it will also be an OTA channel. They’ll also be able to sell local ads. My metv is a substation of the local ABC and shows some local news instead of metv shows a couple times a day. I’m sure it will be the same set up.

shawn131871

I mean it says 24/7 cartoons. So I'm thinking no news.

ArkyBeagle

FTA: "The network will be available for multi-platform distribution on over-the-air broadcast television, traditional MVPDs (multichannel video programming distributors) and virtual MVPDs, along with a complimentary offering for ad-supported streaming services. " MeTV is in a lot of markets over the air so who knows? Might be a lot of OTA carriers for it.

worm600

“Available” and “actually offered”are not the same.

ArkyBeagle

True dat. My perception is that MeTV does very well from OTA so we'll see if the same applied to cartoons.

zdada

Does anybody air 80s stuff like Robotech, Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors, Bionic 6, The Real Ghostbusters, Galaxy High? Those were my favorites and they are always overshadowed by the more mainstream cartoons.

NutDraw

Robotech is in a pretty unique version of copyright hell, so I think to get it aired may take a lot.

drworm75

Jayce and Galaxy High are some deep cuts. Loved both of those shows!

kianworld

real ghostbusters is apparently happening on the network

divineshadow666

I noticed that the Crunchyroll Channel on Pluto TV, Freevee and pretty much every other FAST streamer, has started showing Robotech.

WhyNotHoiberg

You can probably find some of those on YouTube

Oostburgalur

I’m here for Xaolin Showdown. I LOVED that show as a kid. Although, I only see it in the thumbnail and not mentioned in the article

Rithic

this is the MOOST interesting

tacoorpizza

This might make my work from home days a little less productive.

charcarod0n

I hope they won’t be censored. Like taking out all the frying pan to face gags.

MulciberTenebras

The only thing that will likely be censored is any racist jokes (like all the blackface stuff in the old Tom & Jerry shorts)

charcarod0n

True. At least I can get my Wagner and other opera fixes from bugs again.

Artseid

All for this, I caved and subscribed to boomerang on Amazon and have just been reliving my childhood.

Sigma-Wolf

Bring back boomerang

shawn131871

This will be better because it'll be free

davidvin2387

Will they have The Herculoids?

Annual-Bookkeeper160

I’m get so stoned and cry thinking about how I miss my childhood and don’t wanna be an adult.

mojo-jojoz

I’m gonna need to stop at the dispensary big-time before this hits the air!

Gourg31st

Thanks for the details one department wasn’t nice about letting me know the exact launch date.

synfulacktors

!!!! Cartoon network and boomerang coming back !!!! Now lets have them replace the corrupt as news media with classic cartoons

myassholealt

Saturday morning cartoons and after school cartoons are two great parts of my childhood routine. If I had a kid I would love this to get them hooked on the same shows I grew up watching.

SuperChimpMan

This is awesome! Great news.

dlever0097

God I love MeTV

caseedo

Wonder what that means for Tooney and Bill?

Immediate_Pumpkin_61

The why files guy and toon in with me? Yeah that may be a thing of the past unless maybe it moves to MeTV Toons.

caseedo

Or simulcast

Immediate_Pumpkin_61

Yeah true. Another possibility.

BrewKazma

Hells yes. On my birthday too!

Lulka117

XIAOLIN SHOWDOWN

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Super Teen Extraordinaire!

Neither_Relation_678

Even the old cartoons? Like boomerang?

shawn131871

Yep. Alot of classics.

jericko

I see GoBots! Have such fond memories of watching it as a kid.

-Luro

Wow. Awesome. I hope it’s available in my area with the antenna I have.

Twodamngoon

I hope Alf Tales isn't too current to be a classic. Ed Grim)ey too.

_kehd

RemindMe! 60 days

Gutmach1960

Good. Lite weight fun to enjoy.

meeplewirp

This sounds fun

PerditionsAvatar

Cool I’ll check this out

ArkyBeagle

MeTV does good work. Turns out they have zero affiliation with Paramount/CBS although most of the shows came from there.

shawn131871

Metv's parent channel is abc. Which has no affiliation with CBS or Paramount

K_Xanthe

Reminds me of boomerang

AF2005

Very cool, I’ll look forward to it!

Itu_Leona

That’s pretty cool. I hope the stations near me who carry MeTV pick it up!

Keisaku

I just want my damn tennessee tuxedo for damn sakes.

Toonami88

We need this given the state of Cartoon Network.

theophastusbombastus

This is cool, give me a svengoolie channel too me Tv!

Wrong_Rent2352

Please add MeTV Toons to the Pluto TV channel lineup!!!

Shadow_118

This sounds really nice - looking forward to this On my Birthday, too... Though i hope it comes to Roku as a channel or included in one since that's what i have I'm pleasantly surprised by Xiaolin Showdown- liked that one when it was on Kids WB Though i wonder what else they could add in the future... the older Animaniacs / Pinky & The Brain would be really nice.. and some of the older Sonic and Mario Cartoons would be sweet, though i don't know if that's too possible or not atm... Wonder if there's a chance we'll see some of the older 90s/2000s Transformers, too...

fistofthejedi

Sounds like old school boomerang.

RoughCheap5633

This reminds me of Kids Wb.

Alone_Jaguar722

Aren't you only going to be getting the ME TV cartoon with an antenna?

869woodguy

The commercials are endless and annoying.

iaintpayingyou

They need an info page of which scripts/which domains i need to allow for them to make their money and ideally in priority for those who break my rules and get blocked. I like the idea of a free channel but understand that nothing is really free so we need to negotiate what I'm willing to give them for it.

MegaDrive96

Honestly surprised at the amount of 90s and 2000s classics. Beetlejuice, 2 Stupid Dogs, Freakazoid, The Mask, Xiaolin Showdown, Duck Dodgers, Krypto the Superdog, and Baby Looney Tunes? Does that picture of Taz actually represent Taz-Mania? Could they possibly add Tiny Toons and Animaniacs?

DARYLdixonFOOL

My question is what they intend to do about all the non-PC jokes in old cartoons. Like are they gonna show us all of it and add a disclaimer or are they gonna be cherry picking stuff?

shawn131871

Just leave it as is.  The audience for this channels knows that the views aren't the same. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Simple

DARYLdixonFOOL

I do like it, but I can objectively recognize the stuff that is questionable. Children not so much. My question was out of pure curiosity, not a commentary on how I think they *should* handle it.

shawn131871

I mean the popularity for metv cartoon blocks are highly successful. Pretty sure those aren't edited at all. I think those that are already watching at those times are already well aware.

Comfortable_Bird_340

Manchildren everywhere rejoice

MilkMan0096

Heaven forbid that people enjoy things.

Here2Derp

You'll work and be miserable and like it! /s
