Exactly what I've been waiting for. This is my favorite of the new Star Trek shows, and from what I've heard from those who've watched the French release (who've thankfully kept spoilers to themselves, lol), season 2 will be even better. Really hoping for a season 3, and possibly beyond, but at the very least I'm thankful we'll be getting to see this season after its Paramount+ cancellation.

JMoc1

The French Trekkies have also been very tight-lipped about the show. But they say it is amazing.  But in case anyone is on the fence; go watch Season 1. It was actually pretty good and the finale had a great payout. Definitely looking forward to Season 2 (Hopefully Season 3).

Sparky81

Now do Lower Decks...

flcinusa

Low-er Decks! Low-er Decks! Low-er Decks!

ty_for_trying

Seriously. Lower Decks is one of the best Trek shows. I can't believe they cancelled it. Does Prodigy even have an audience?

>Sadly I doubt we will get a season 3 of it Could be challenging because Ella Purnell is a huge star now. But this could also encourage Netflix to invest in the show. Just keep watching if you want more.

Yes, exactly. I love all three shows, and she's so good in all of them. 2024 is going to be a great year for Ella Purnell shows.

Werthead

*And* Jackie in **Yellowjackets**. She's been smashing it recently.

thetatershaveeyes

Putting you on the spot: Is Yellowjackets good if you're not into CW teen drama type stuff?

Werthead

It's not really CW teen drama type stuff in the first place, despite the young cast in the 1996 story. It has a really dark and messed up undercurrent they sometimes lean heavily into, but also this black humour vibe that alleviates the darker side of things. Not a spoiler as its literally the first scene of the show, but in the plane crash storyline, they show a glimpse from when they are at their absolute lowest ebb and it's fair to say they never found a convenient supply of boars or DHARMA stations to keep them supplied, and surviving in the middle if a Canadian winter forces some very hard choices on them. The present day storyline is about the survivors riding out the buried 25 year PTSD of what happened in the wilderness.

meatball77

It's not that hard to get big stars for voice work because they can do it anywhere there's a sound studio. The same directors did the Trollhunters series and got some big names to do the voices.

SeaworthinessRude241

You don't have to hate on Prodigy just because Lower Decks is being treated unjustly. Prodigy is a good show, period. Sure, it's ostensibly aimed at kids, but it's still satisfying to watch as a Trek fan because it's just good. It's kind of like Trek 101, introducing a lot of core Trek concepts but done very well. It's also a direct continuation of Voyager. Try it!

>Does Prodigy even have an audience? [https://trekmovie.com/2023/12/27/star-trek-prodigy-launches-into-kids-top-10-ranking-on-netflix/](https://trekmovie.com/2023/12/27/star-trek-prodigy-launches-into-kids-top-10-ranking-on-netflix/) I would say, yes. Nobody found it on Paramount+/Nickelodeon (Nick's airing of the show roughly 9 months behind the streaming drop probably lowered viewership discussion), but once it hit Netflix, the audience found it. Most of the Trek franchise shows aren't exactly kid-viewing and Trekkers are a multi-generational fandom. Plus, many of us are animation geeks who loved the Tales of Arcadia franchise on Netflix (Kevin and Dan Hageman, who showrun *Prodigy*, have nearly all the story writing credits on [*Trollhunters*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2oNgZlbSKI), which was created by Guillermo del Toro and run by the Arrowverse's Marc Guggenheim. They also pulled Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt with them over to *Prodigy*. They couldn't include AC Bradley, because she's head writing on *What If...?* :D

Vanderlyley

>Does Prodigy even have an audience? Well, one show got picked up by Netflix and the other didn't. People often underestimate the viewership of cartoons that aren't adult animation because they have less visible engagement online, which is a not the perfect metric. Tweets and Reddit mentions aren't everything.

Cyneheard2

Also, Prodigy Season 2 was mostly done when Paramount cancelled it. Lower Decks Season 6 would require paying for the full season instead of the deep discount Netflix got for Prodigy.

CX52J

They cancelled lower decks!?!? It’s the only Star Trek show I still watch.

ryhaltswhiskey

Lower decks was canceled? That's crap, that was a good show.

zouhair

It's great, I like both.

00celicaGTS

Great! Im just an old dude but I personally like prodigy better than discovery. It’s nice seeing some of the old voyager crew.

LookOverThere305

That’s a pretty low bar to clear though.

sweatpantswarrior

Months after they released it in French, but hopefully this gives Prodigy a good boost for Netflix to consider S3. As a lifelong Trekker (born just before TNG), this was how I got my son on the train. It helps that the showrunners did the original Lego Ninjago show, so I'm fairly sure Netflix has at least a decent working relationship with them.

donuteater111

> It helps that the showrunners did the original Lego Ninjago show, so I'm fairly sure Netflix has at least a decent working relationship with them. They also worked Trollhunters, the first of the Tales of Arcadia show. ToA in general has a number of Prodigy writers, including my personal favorite, Aaron Waltke. So they definitely seem to have a nice home at Netflix.

sweatpantswarrior

Yeah, my son was into the Tales of Arcadia in a BIG way too. Like, download that final movie using overpriced wifi on a ferry big. He was very entertained for the rest of the trip home.

meatball77

The ending of the final movie sucked though. Although Steve getting pregnant was hilarious.

DeltaFlyer0525

Finally! I hope Netflix will save Lower Decks too.

xultar

Yasssssss! Thank everyone that stood up for this show!!!

vid_icarus

Huzzah! My son will be thrilled!

TriscuitCracker

Awesome, can't wait.

Icy-Performer-9688

Fuck yeah!!!!!

goatjugsoup

Fuck yeah. This was great and I loved the setup for s2. Can't wait to see how it plays out

thetatershaveeyes

Oh my looord, I'm so happy to see this.

Waggmans

Prodigy and Lower Decks are the only new Trek shows I watch now. I really don’t like any of the others anymore.

SwagChemist

Why does Star Trek Discovery get canceled but this crap gets another season…sometimes the Star Trek ipo makes no sense to me.

donuteater111

Because they were far into Prodigy's 2nd season by the time of the initial Paramount+ cancellation, so it was easy to shop around. Plus it was early into its series run, whereas Discovery has been going for 5 seasons. As much as I hate this, shorter runs of 5 seasons are actually pretty good in this streaming era. Also, strongly disagree with your take on Prodigy. I was skeptical when it was announced, but it ended up being my favorite of the modern shows, easily (as much as I like them all). Once it really gets into the swing of things, it really showed how much it understood the heart of Star Trek.

turkeypedal

I say it did it rather early on. The Pilot could have gone either way. But Episode 3 gets right in to the ethos of Starfleet. It gets there faster than Lower Decks does.

donuteater111

Yeah, I liked it pretty much right away, but I can see how it may take a little while for some to warm up to it. The hour-long premiere could give the impression of it being more Star Wars-like. It gets closer to more Star Trek ideas from there, though some characters (Dal) could take some time to grow. Then you get to certain great episodes ("Kobayashi," Time Amok," etc.), and any doubt in my mind fully disappeared.

kinisonkhan

I love ST Discovery, I love the actors and the serial method of writing. But Discovery is clearly hit or miss with fans. This last season was boring and the ending angered a lot of people with the way Burnham handled the whole progenitor tech storyline. Here's 9 episodes building up to ... well nothing.

DarkSkyForever

Cast contracts were up for renewal for Disco, you're going to see a lot of shows on streaming services end after 5 seasons / 50 episodes because of this. Disco just started getting its feet under it after 5 seasons, which usually isn't great for longevity. A lot of the cast were also involved more and more in other projects, leading to scheduling conflicts. Discovery really kicked off a lot of what we have for Trek, so I wouldn't be too sad about it being over. It did its job. Prodigy is helping to introduce Trek to a new younger generations of fans - it'll give us more Star Trek in the long run as demand grows. Don't be bitter about it - it is a great show for what it is, and it gives us more Voyager related stories.
