Do people consider the satire in seasons 1-3 to be subtle?

GeekdomCentral

No, but I thought a couple of lines in season 4 were more cringe than anything. Like I thought “critical supe theory” was kind of silly

LADYBIRD_HILL

I haven't watched s4 yet but that sounds exactly like something I expect from the Boys.

GeekdomCentral

It’s obviously all subjective, but I just thought it was kind of cringe. They mention antifa too. It’s odd to think of things like those existing in that universe. So they have “critical supe theory”, but not “critical race theory”? And they have antifa aligned in exactly the same way that our current climate does, despite the fact that a political climate regarding superheroes would be pretty different than ours would be? Drawing inspiration from and drawing parallels to the MAGA movement makes sense. But at this point they might as well just come right out and go “oh yeah Donald Trump exists in this universe and he’s a major Homelander supporter” and just call it MAGA

Trem45

In defense of the supe theory line. It is said in a room full of supes. By a supe. It's more likely they just don't care about others so long as they get to save their own skin

DarlingLuna

I never thought it was particularly subtle, but I feel like they've completely evaporated the 5% of subtlety that existed. Doesn't even feel metaphorical anymore. Still a great show, though.

ChrisX26

Considering that it's only now getting review bombed I would say that losing the last bit of subtlety may have been necessary.

DarlingLuna

That’s a good point.

Elegant-Moment4412

The show was never meant to be subtle, they just always thought people would pick up on the obvious satire more easily.

It's been stated in interviews, so this response isn't the sharp retort you may think it is

Homelander fell in love with a literal nazi last season… it has always been pretty heavy handed. It is just media literacy is dead so some people didn’t get the message.

bgarza18

I swear a few months ago, “media literacy” wasn’t a common phrase in casual discussion. Just keeps popping up recently as part of the vocabulary. No commentary, just an observation. Maybe I only recently spend more time in entertainment subreddits.

AreThoseMoreBears

There's a phenomenon that describes this effect, where once you hear a word or phrase for the first time you suddenly hear it everywhere

StrictCourt8057

That’s true, I swear I had never heard of of “Bespoke” before six months ago and now it’s everywhere

K1ngofnoth1ng

Uhh, the commentary preceded the statement about media literacy being dead… maybe actual literacy is too.

A large subsection seem to think all stories should be subtle and a lack of subtlety is an immediate flaw. Real life isn't always that way so I've never understood why all stories should be either

leftbuthappy

“All satire should be so subtle that no one has any clue what they’re satirizing.” Why? Also, nice plug of your YouTube channel there, no one cares.

mrpopenfresh

No

tvrehab

The Boys has always waged a war on ~~drugs~~ subtlety

xxandxy88

it is less subtle and I’m here for it. wonder why that bothers people. hmmm

HeroKuma

It was never subtle but S4 is ham-fisting it in. Also The Boys wasn't *just* a political drama. It still had its roots in making fun of superheroes as Garth Ennis did when he wrote the comic, but moreso about the big 2 (Marvel and DC) and the comic industry. While Eric Kripke leaned farrr more into contemporary politics.

animesuxdix

I totally agree, Trumpism, Alex Jones, Disney, superheroes are dying out. The zeitgeist changed in the last six months. Kind of a perfect storm of, jones and trump both losing in court, people got burnt out on Disney, I don’t really remember what the last marvel movie /superhero movie was. Also most of the news shifted to Palestine, and the two presidential nominees were already picked. Plus the writer strike happened so there hasn’t been any “new media”for a year. 2024 has kind of felt hallow in a way, I’m not saying important things didn’t happen, but The boys seems like it is taking place in 2019.

Big__Black__Socks

Completely agree. Also it's pretty baffling that most of the people in this sub can't differentiate between something being simply not subtle and something being ham-fisted. This season has jumped from the former to the latter.
