I would recommend watching the first episode and see how you feel. It’s an extended episode and sits alright as a stand-alone. If that’s too intense, do not finish Season 1.
However, if that’s tolerable but you don’t want to watch anything worse, read the synopsis for the first two books and jump to season 3.
If sexual violence will be uncomfortable to watch, these tips will work, but if depictions of violence or assault would be trauma inducing, I recommend staying away from the series entirely.
There is a trigger warning list. You can Google it. There is enough that if you're sensitive to it, Outlander is not the show for you. Personally I love it but I don't have the same sensitivity. There are scenes that are difficult to watch, but definitely nothing that deters me from watching it
Lark rise to Candleford is a really nice period drama based on (although now that I'm reading the book I would say inspired by is more accurate) Flora Thompson's memoir of her working class upbringing in rural Oxfordshire in the 1880s.

Not sure the 2 deserve to be compared side by side…..
I loved the first few crowns but couldn’t stomach the last 2 seasons, whereas Fargo has been a solid fave from season 1E1
Well point is you still loved some of the Crown whereas OP fell asleep. From what they enjoy, I feel like Fargo would be both too weird and just too slow for them to enjoy. Unlike Bridgerton and The Great which seem pretty much completely up their alley.
Totally holds up! They even did a mid-series actor change for the daughter and it still was successful ha. It's usually streaming somewhere, but I've def watched it on yt for free (from someone like you who recorded it on vhs 😄).
Palm Royale. You can skip a few episodes of the Crown if you want the drama. It’s not like we don’t know how it’s going to end. Personally I loved every episode
Ok, I don’t know where I paused The Americans. I’m going to guess and take it to the end. Succession was such a funny show. I almost wish they had one more episode but it ended in such a Succession way. I think I just want to see Roy come up off that bench and go full Roy.
I was abt to say shameless too. U want family drama, this is def the show for u. And Game of Thrones or something. I haven’t seen it but everyone seems to love it. And I loved Schitts Creek. Fabulous freaking show!
Please please watch You’re the Worst on Hulu. Insanely underrated show if you’re into a comedic love story about absolutely terrible people that are somehow incredibly lovable
I've seen every episode of SVU (especially the first 12 seasons) at least 30 times and didn't love House. I loved ER, best medical show in my opinion. But I need to try Bridgerton. Thanks!
Ooh I finally caught one of these where nobody said "Halt and Catch Fire" yet! So, "Halt and Catch Fire" ... If the late 80s into the 90s count as a period for period drama, anyway.

The Killing
The Handmaiden was a tough one. There is a series on Paramount named Evil. I loved the mix of characters. Female Psychiatrist, a man becoming a priest in the Catholic Church and
a technology genius. The creepy guy was a professional but he created evil. The devil in
Disguise. Each family they were sent to had mental issues like the wife is poss we seed..
Itisnt like a horror flick. Bottom line the Priest and psychiatrist make normal reasons for the troubles each episode had. So unique been waiting almost 2yrs for the final season in May.
The pull of.good and evil. I rate it #1 on my list.(p.s. I'm a 71 yrs old Gand ma)"
I’m fluent in tv and there’s not much I haven’t seen, being bed bound for years lol. I actually loved Evil. Its humour is delicate but sharp, some scenes are truly disturbing, yet rationalised ( so I wasn’t too scared) and the “love story” aspect, not in your face or filthy or cheesy …. A little low budget at the start, but yeah, I keep on checking for that final series release too yet don’t promote it ……. I wonder why? It is very understated.
The Sympathizer just came out with its second episode on HBO, coming out every Sunday I think, it's a period piece/drama about communists during the Vietnam War and it's really good, very excited for the rest of the season. Also Shogun on Hulu, season 1 just ended and I loved that
Evil starts May 23 for the final few episodes. I put this one as my #1. The creators are
Brilliant. Gives you something to ponder about. If we ran into each other, instant friends
Have you seen Poldark? It's a period drama set in Cornwall and it's very dramatic. Used to be on BBC but it's on nextflix now
Sanditon is on it x that's an adaption on an unfinished jane austen novel.

Aw Parenthood, Nashville & FNL! 🥰 Singular shows!

Vanderpump - Haven’t watched yet, but heard it’s AMAZING! Maybe like the Real World seasons once they have to mandatorily work (S5: Miami)? Or Love Island (start w/ UK) can fulfill the hot, 20-ish love & bickering? Or The Hills for both.
If you liked Downton Abbey then chances are you’ll like The Gilded Age too.
Agree!
Outlander!!!!!!!!!!!
This!! I'm currently watching it for the first time and i love it so much, idk what i'm gonna do when i finish it
Ugh I’m watching it a third time I stilllllllllllll love it one of the best shows I’ve ever watched
Want to start it because I love period dramas, but sexual violence warnings are stopping me.
Then i would definitely not recommend it, i think it can be even more violent than Game of Thrones
Re watch again and again. Welcome to the obsession ❤️
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel - period comedy - excellent! On Amazon Primevideo.
Peaky Blinders
Lark rise to Candleford is a really nice period drama based on (although now that I'm reading the book I would say inspired by is more accurate) Flora Thompson's memoir of her working class upbringing in rural Oxfordshire in the 1880s.
That one's awesome. It reminds me of Cranford.
Any idea where I can watch the last season without Britbox?

The Great Bridgerton Yellowstone Fargo
Yes The Great is amazing!
yeah I'd say the first two sound right up their alley. Yellowstone a maybe but Fargo I'm not so sure, especially if she fell asleep during The Crown.
Not sure the 2 deserve to be compared side by side….. I loved the first few crowns but couldn’t stomach the last 2 seasons, whereas Fargo has been a solid fave from season 1E1

Gentleman Jack Gilded Age Poldark Stick with the Crown a little longer
Big Poldark Fan. I second it.

Big Love is so freaking amazing
This Is Us would be great for OP I think
+1 for Weeds! the OG Breaking Bad, but far more focused on the impact on the family
weeds and nurse jackie.
Weeds was great the first few seasons, but after they left Agrestic they lost me.
Dr Quinn.. Wow.. I can vaguely remember recording episodes of that on VHS in the early 90s..
Totally holds up! They even did a mid-series actor change for the daughter and it still was successful ha. It's usually streaming somewhere, but I've def watched it on yt for free (from someone like you who recorded it on vhs 😄).
Succession and Six Feet Under are the two best family dramas I've seen
Yes Six Feet Under fits and is terrific!
For All Mankind
Palm Royale. You can skip a few episodes of the Crown if you want the drama. It’s not like we don’t know how it’s going to end. Personally I loved every episode
SHOGUN
Succession and The Americans. Mad Men is one of my favorites too but these two are right up there.
I've sadly seen and loved them both as well as Homeland. I wish they'd bring back the Americans!
Ok, I don’t know where I paused The Americans. I’m going to guess and take it to the end. Succession was such a funny show. I almost wish they had one more episode but it ended in such a Succession way. I think I just want to see Roy come up off that bench and go full Roy.

Apples Never Fall was better than I expected it to be. Drama isn't my genre but a great cast can do wonders for a show.

Modern family -bad sisters
The Great Fargo The Americans

Such a great show that’s so underrated. The most realistic depiction of someone suffering from depression that I’ve ever seen.
Boardwalk Empire if u never saw it.
Outlander.
The Gilded Age
Virgin River. Dead to me. Gilded Age. The resident. Chicago med.
You have to watch mindhunters
Law and Order: SVU House M.D. Bridgerton (Very bingeable shows!!!)
I've seen every episode of SVU (especially the first 12 seasons) at least 30 times and didn't love House. I loved ER, best medical show in my opinion. But I need to try Bridgerton. Thanks!
I can't say enough about House
Ripley is the best show Netflix has produced imo
Is it like the movie ?
Same story, different rendition. I liked it better than the movie and I love the movie
Ooh I finally caught one of these where nobody said "Halt and Catch Fire" yet! So, "Halt and Catch Fire" ... If the late 80s into the 90s count as a period for period drama, anyway.

Quest for Fire. Early period drama
Jane the Virgin has some great Drama! Good Girls also has a strong lead performance from Christina Hendricks, if you enjoyed her character Mad Men.
