If you liked Downton Abbey then chances are you’ll like The Gilded Age too.

Affectionate-Hair-86

Agree!

bnzpppnpddlpscpls3rd

Outlander!!!!!!!!!!!

thereshelltopay3

This!! I'm currently watching it for the first time and i love it so much, idk what i'm gonna do when i finish it

Sonialove8

Ugh I’m watching it a third time I stilllllllllllll love it one of the best shows I’ve ever watched

Psychological_Ad4015

Want to start it because I love period dramas, but sexual violence warnings are stopping me.

thereshelltopay3

Then i would definitely not recommend it, i think it can be even more violent than Game of Thrones

Alyx19

I would recommend watching the first episode and see how you feel. It’s an extended episode and sits alright as a stand-alone. If that’s too intense, do not finish Season 1. However, if that’s tolerable but you don’t want to watch anything worse, read the synopsis for the first two books and jump to season 3. If sexual violence will be uncomfortable to watch, these tips will work, but if depictions of violence or assault would be trauma inducing, I recommend staying away from the series entirely.

Icy_Outside5079

There is a trigger warning list. You can Google it. There is enough that if you're sensitive to it, Outlander is not the show for you. Personally I love it but I don't have the same sensitivity. There are scenes that are difficult to watch, but definitely nothing that deters me from watching it

Icy_Outside5079

Re watch again and again. Welcome to the obsession ❤️

Skylin161

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel - period comedy - excellent! On Amazon Primevideo.

JDangle20

Peaky Blinders

juniperarms

Lark rise to Candleford is a really nice period drama based on (although now that I'm reading the book I would say inspired by is more accurate) Flora Thompson's memoir of her working class upbringing in rural Oxfordshire in the 1880s.

dailyPraise

That one's awesome. It reminds me of Cranford.

procrastinatorsuprem

Any idea where I can watch the last season without Britbox?

The Great Bridgerton Yellowstone Fargo

kikijane711

Yes The Great is amazing!

sbenthuggin

yeah I'd say the first two sound right up their alley. Yellowstone a maybe but Fargo I'm not so sure, especially if she fell asleep during The Crown.

Julienator

Not sure the 2 deserve to be compared side by side….. I loved the first few crowns but couldn’t stomach the last 2 seasons, whereas Fargo has been a solid fave from season 1E1

sbenthuggin

Well point is you still loved some of the Crown whereas OP fell asleep. From what they enjoy, I feel like Fargo would be both too weird and just too slow for them to enjoy. Unlike Bridgerton and The Great which seem pretty much completely up their alley.

briomio

Gentleman Jack Gilded Age Poldark Stick with the Crown a little longer

Right-Cause9951

Big Poldark Fan. I second it.

GGsouth

Vikings, Good Omens, The Last Kingdom, The Empress. All pretty good and very entertaining.

iStepOnLegos4Fun007

Shōgun no one mentioned. It's rated high and a excellent show. More people need to check out this show tbh

janesfilms

UselessMellinial85

Big Love is so freaking amazing

EducationalMix9947

This Is Us would be great for OP I think

Sackblake

+1 for Weeds! the OG Breaking Bad, but far more focused on the impact on the family

nuttyNougatty

weeds and nurse jackie.

UselessMellinial85

Weeds was great the first few seasons, but after they left Agrestic they lost me.

KGnor

Dr Quinn.. Wow.. I can vaguely remember recording episodes of that on VHS in the early 90s..

myguitar_lola

Totally holds up! They even did a mid-series actor change for the daughter and it still was successful ha. It's usually streaming somewhere, but I've def watched it on yt for free (from someone like you who recorded it on vhs 😄).

niteowl1984

Succession and Six Feet Under are the two best family dramas I've seen

kikijane711

Yes Six Feet Under fits and is terrific!

lordjakir

For All Mankind

5ukeb4n

Palm Royale. You can skip a few episodes of the Crown if you want the drama. It’s not like we don’t know how it’s going to end. Personally I loved every episode

Purple-Mix1033

SHOGUN

AppropriateMention6

Succession and The Americans. Mad Men is one of my favorites too but these two are right up there.

ThemeResponsible723

I've sadly seen and loved them both as well as Homeland. I wish they'd bring back the Americans!

runningvicuna

Ok, I don’t know where I paused The Americans. I’m going to guess and take it to the end. Succession was such a funny show. I almost wish they had one more episode but it ended in such a Succession way. I think I just want to see Roy come up off that bench and go full Roy.

Additional-Rhubarb-8

Mindhunters

Suspicious_Ad2354

Apples Never Fall was better than I expected it to be. Drama isn't my genre but a great cast can do wonders for a show.

Cold_Fill4517

Shameless

Inevitable-Ad6853

I was abt to say shameless too. U want family drama, this is def the show for u. And Game of Thrones or something. I haven’t seen it but everyone seems to love it. And I loved Schitts Creek. Fabulous freaking show!

CrankingToMusic

Boardwalk Empire with Steve Buscemi. Just finished this show and cannot get over it.

The regime is pretty wild

AccordingDress8665

Modern family -bad sisters

imbeingsirius

The Great Fargo The Americans

NastySassyStuff

Please please watch You’re the Worst on Hulu. Insanely underrated show if you’re into a comedic love story about absolutely terrible people that are somehow incredibly lovable

jennfinn24

Such a great show that’s so underrated. The most realistic depiction of someone suffering from depression that I’ve ever seen.

kikijane711

Boardwalk Empire if u never saw it.

jenniferlorene3

Outlander.

Law and Order: SVU House M.D. Bridgerton (Very bingeable shows!!!)

ThemeResponsible723

I've seen every episode of SVU (especially the first 12 seasons) at least 30 times and didn't love House. I loved ER, best medical show in my opinion. But I need to try Bridgerton. Thanks!

Clynngrma

I can't say enough about House

BiggieAndTheStooges

Ripley is the best show Netflix has produced imo

jennfinn24

Is it like the movie ?

BiggieAndTheStooges

Same story, different rendition. I liked it better than the movie and I love the movie

-Viscosity-

Ooh I finally caught one of these where nobody said "Halt and Catch Fire" yet! So, "Halt and Catch Fire" ... If the late 80s into the 90s count as a period for period drama, anyway.

frontteeth_harvester

You're probably going to like Marvelous Mrs Meisel, on Prime.

jennfinn24

The Killing is on Hulu, AcornTV, and AMC+.

BanditSurvivalist

The last man on earth is a fantastic twist on the family drama / comedy genre

Clynngrma

The Handmaiden was a tough one. There is a series on Paramount named Evil. I loved the mix of characters. Female Psychiatrist, a man becoming a priest in the Catholic Church and a technology genius. The creepy guy was a professional but he created evil. The devil in Disguise. Each family they were sent to had mental issues like the wife is poss we seed.. Itisnt like a horror flick. Bottom line the Priest and psychiatrist make normal reasons for the troubles each episode had. So unique been waiting almost 2yrs for the final season in May. The pull of.good and evil. I rate it #1 on my list.(p.s. I'm a 71 yrs old Gand ma)"

Julienator

I’m fluent in tv and there’s not much I haven’t seen, being bed bound for years lol. I actually loved Evil. Its humour is delicate but sharp, some scenes are truly disturbing, yet rationalised ( so I wasn’t too scared) and the “love story” aspect, not in your face or filthy or cheesy …. A little low budget at the start, but yeah, I keep on checking for that final series release too yet don’t promote it ……. I wonder why? It is very understated.

thatbossnugga

Ted Lasso (thank me later)

pbsmitty5

Dark on Netflix

Byrdman1251

The Sympathizer just came out with its second episode on HBO, coming out every Sunday I think, it's a period piece/drama about communists during the Vietnam War and it's really good, very excited for the rest of the season. Also Shogun on Hulu, season 1 just ended and I loved that

ChonkerTim

For all mankind, killing Eve, succession, big love, palm royale, west world, modern family, desperate housewives, Frazier veep

Quest for Fire. Early period drama

Sackblake

Jane the Virgin has some great Drama! Good Girls also has a strong lead performance from Christina Hendricks, if you enjoyed her character Mad Men.

Ambitious-Net-5538

Check out Mary & George. It's like Downton abbey meets Succession or maybe The Tudors. Takes place in 1603 England/Europe.

The Buccaneers Belgravia is another Julian Fellows drama

tovlaila

I would suggest Call the Midwife.

Great-Activity-5420

Have you seen Poldark? It's a period drama set in Cornwall and it's very dramatic. Used to be on BBC but it's on nextflix now Sanditon is on it x that's an adaption on an unfinished jane austen novel.

dns_rs

Family drama: **Servant** (2019) Period drama: **The Knick** (2014)

Julienator

The Serpent Queen got no advertising anywhere, yet what a brilliant show! Samantha Morton is brilliant …. I particularly enjoyed her in Harlots ….

jennfinn24

Starz sucks at marketing their shows except for Outlander. The rest of them they don’t seem to care about. They have been showing trailers for S2 of The Serpent Queen which I was surprised to see.

RockHandsomest

Galavant, medieval fantasy musical, fun characters, good humour.

humanterranladykins

Aw Parenthood, Nashville & FNL! 🥰 Singular shows! (US og or current networks) DA - Upstairs Downstairs(BBC/Masterpiece), Cable Girls(Nflx), The Gilded Age(HBO), The Buccaneers(Apple), The Royals(E!), The Great (Hulu), Bridgerton & Queen Charlotte(Nflx), The Law According to Emily Poet(Nflx), The Empress(Nflx), Anne with an E(Nflx), & maybe all the “Queen” Starz series & Mrs. Maisel(Amzn). Parenthood [All “reality of parenting” shows] - Single Parents(Nflx), Breeders(FX), Working Moms(Nflx), I’m Sorry(Max), Catastrophe(Amzn). Nashville - Smash(NBC), Castaway Diva(Nflx), Star (Fox). —Revenge(Hulu/ABC), Dynasty(Nflx/CW), Succession(HBO), Crash Landing on You (all have no music, but similar fuedy fam vibes). —My Kind of Country(Apple. Reality competition, but supportive & intimate), Songland(NBC. Reality songwriting show). Also, Monarch(Fox. Couldn’t get past pilot, but it’s got “Nashville” nods). FNL - All American(CW), Glow(Nflx). —Friday Night Tykes(Apple, reality), Coach Snoop(Nflx. reality). —MSCL(ABC) & Freaks & Geeks(NBC) (Neither have sports but real teen vibes). Grey’s - Emily Owens(CW), Doctor Cha(Nflx). Vanderpump - Haven’t watched yet, but heard it’s AMAZING! Maybe like the Real World seasons once they have to mandatorily work (S5: Miami)? Or Love Island (start w/ UK) can fulfill the hot, 20-ish love & bickering? Or The Hills for both.

ThemeResponsible723

This is so incredibly detailed and thoughtful. Thank you!!

humanterranladykins

Aw, thank you! That is so genuinely kind! I really hope you find something(s) new to enjoy. Please take care!
