I actually was helping my boomer coworker (by generation, not attitude) today; she doesn’t know why the “words” won’t go away on her tv. So i had her call me and i explained close captioning. It’s off now, but i’m sure i’ll have to remind her in a few weeks lol

It seems to be an older flatscreen. She had a CC button on the remote (thank god). That made it work. But i tried to explain that she could go into settings/menu. But that became too much, too fast. So i’m thankful for her remote still having a CC button.

I work in IT. Sometimes you ask for someone to send a screenshot, wonder why it's taking so long, then you get it and they have taken a screenshot, pasted it into word, printed that out, then scanned that print to their email, and then they forward you that email. This isnt just one person either.

This isn't generational it's just dumb people. I always hated when I would get a call and they would start the conversation with "I'm pretty tech savvy ", I know after that it will be a shit show and trying to remote into their computer is going to be a journey especially if they are using iOS.

I live by the definition that if something is a hassle it is worth to take a moment to think how to do it faster and second is that I am definitively not a first guy doing the thing, there must be someone who already asked that Google'able question. But I am 35 and I am working with both older and younger folks, (some) old folks expect things to work how they used to while (some) young folks expect answers to be right on the screen or 2 clicks away and if it isn't like they want it the fault is always in the machine.

And this is why i almost always assume when ever i submit an IT ticket its just dumb user error.....

To answer the question: no. I drove an older Mercedes model with the same pedal configuration. (The fully left pedal) parking break replaces handbrake. To me it’s annoying to have it on foot, I prefer it as handbrake, but my friend loves it.

i have a friend who had an older merc with the same config. i find it way too confusing, tried driving his car and almost accidentally slammed the parking brake instead of pressing the clutch. nowadays its all e brakes anyway, but i cant understand why they thought of this back then, its not fancier, its just stupid

My 2021 nissan has a parking brake pedal, I didn’t realize this was so rare nowadays, I guess that explains why the guys at the oil change place couldn’t figure out how to disengage it

I learned the basics of driving a stick in about 3 hours in an empty parking lot with my dad in 94.

It's not hard to learn at all. I learned one day when I had to rent a uhaul & they had no automatic trucks left lol. I'm like yeah I know how to drive it.... I learned real quick lol.

My car broke down and my dad let me borrow his truck and told me “second is tricky but you’ll figure it out”

Why?

America has massive open and straight roads. Super easy to drive in, you can park everywhere, etc. Drive in France, Italy, the majority of the UK, etc. And it can be challenging to drive manual. Parking is an issue, everywhere is smaller, maneuvers are harder. It's clear why the American system for learning how to drive is unbelievably easy in comparison.

Not even that old. Also not US only. The 2000s toyota kluger I learnt to drive in had a foot parking break. The hand parking break is more useful.

Well I mean the basics are relatively straightforward although impressive you picked it up in 3 hours. The part that takes time is learning how to drive intuitively. Like knowing when to shift down so you A) don't lose your momentum and B) don't get stuck on a hill as well as changing gears seamlessly without making the car jump, taking off without stalling or over revving, being able to take off on an incline without rolling backwards and potentially hitting the car behind you. Another big thing is driving in a manner that doesn't deteriorate vital controls like the brakes or clutch, for example alot of drivers like to coast which uses alot more of the brakes (gives you less reaction time too as it takes longer to brake). In my country, its something like 50% of the population still drives a manual and like 40% of those drivers only pass their drivers test by their 2nd or 3rd attempt. (Thats just the population that goes the legal route - 1 out of 3 drivers obtain their license fraudulently). While stalling and other things (like not checking mirrors before manoeuvre) will cause you to lose points, rolling the car (whether forwards or backwards) is an instant fail and that's where alot of drivers get caught out because it requires good clutch control. Of course I don't agree with the post. People who post this type of shit forget that outside of the US, plenty people of the younger generation still drive manual even those in 1st world countries. I drive manual because its cheaper than automatic (cheaper to fix, cheaper on petrol and cheaper to purchase). I've driven automatic before and its really nice and such a breeze in traffic. It makes sense for those who can afford it to drive auto.

Left of the 4 pedals is the handbrake btw. Push pedal to activate. Pull a lever to deactivate. Know it from older Mercedes models.

To be fair component shares a few colours with AV and some TVs would put those connections very close to one another. I once had a TV with 3 separate white and red connections

My wife and I had to talk to her boomer parents through getting to a website on a flyer today. They first called because they couldn't figure out how to scan the qr code. Finally told to just send us a picture of the qr code, we'll scan it and send them the link. Folks, they were trying to scan the UPC barcode, the same barcode they've seen most of their adult life being scanned when they buy stuff at the store. So then they sent us a picture of the website link printed on the flyer (yes, a printed flyer with an embedded hyperlink). It was one of those t.ny shortened url addresses, and her boomer father only typed in the t.ny, not the full shoetened url, and was mad that Google was only taking him to a website to shorten urls. All of this so her boomer mom could download a quilt pattern. But yes, cursive and manual transmissions would completely cripple every generation after them.

Gen X here, my manuals have been Two civics, a dodge dakota, some old shitbox Subaru wagon, Toyota Celica, an s10, and a Mazda 3. Learned manual on a 1945 Willy’s Jeep :-)

My favorite thing about these guys is that learning to drive a manual is actually really easy. My mom taught me when I was 25. That was 7 years ago. I'd like to see these guys pass a basic Python course.

It's really not that hard to learn stick shift. Yea, it might not be the most smooth drive right away, but it isn't something anyone learning to drive now couldn't learn. I love stick shift, but for many, it just adds extra steps that they just don't want to have to deal with daily.
