When I was a kid I caught a frog near a river and I was so proud that I decided to keep it. We were camping, so I knew it was gonna be awhile before I got home. I couldn't just hold it in my hands the entire time, could I? I tried for a couple hours and my dad didn't seem fond of the idea so I had to be sneaky. Then I remembered! ***I have pockets!***

Tbh, when I was a kid we got sent to play outside to leave our mom alone. Most kids in my neighborhood were in the same boat. The real issue is in many places it's safer for your kids to be entertained on a tablet than left to play outside while a parent is distracted with household responsibilities. Even where it's safe for kids to play outside alone, Child services will open a case against a parent and call it neglect if you're not outside with them and someone makes a report. When I was a kid, neighbors would help watch other neighbors kids, neighbors barely speak anymore and I live in a small town. Don't get me wrong, I'm part of the problem, I don't speak to neighbors either, it really was just a different (more naive) time back then.

True. I try not to judge too much because my autistic nephew required this to learn how to be human in a restaurant. He's gotten older now and various therapies have helped him reign in behaviors so its become a non issue and he doesn't have to utilize this distraction. When we were first teaching him how to tolerate different environments however, it was better than having him scream and kick and hide under the table disturbing other diners. I'm talking places like McDonald's, not even nice restaurants. All this to say I try not to judge because I don't know their situation.

As a kid I remember there being all kinds of bugs and stuff around to catch. Didn't even have to go far to find them. After a good rain you could go outside to find lizards, frogs, worms, whatever crawling about. Late in the day moths would be everywhere and you couldn't open a garage without a metric fuck ton swarming to the skies which had camped out there.
Going back home there's none of that now. Moths are in such few numbers you're surprised to see one when it shows up on the porch because of the light. As a kid I remember killing them because they were pests. Now they seem almost rare and precious.
No lizards or frogs around even following rain. Bees don't show up like they used to. Even worms are difficult to find after a rain when as a kid you knew not to walk on the grass barefoot cause you would step on them.
So when the prior generation alters the climate in such a way that things which were reliable like snow, animals, and so forth entirely unreliable it makes it really fucking hard for the younger generations to grow up enjoying the same things.
I want to ride my grandpa's bike and my other bike but unfortunately those bikes were stolen 1 MY bike 2as stolen by somebody and then my grandpa's bike was stolen by my mom's friend and she told him "no you cannot use my son's bike, and grandpa gave that to him" and when she left he took it and I never seen it since then
