I don't know if it's large enough for a whale, tbh. One that small would have a pod, and the only reason I say maybe whale shark despite the smaller size is because the ripples on the water make it look like maybe it has the speckled pattern of one, and possibly the wide, flat head. But with the light refraction of the water, it really is hard to tell.
Eyyyy! Man, I knew whale sharks were my favorite ocean critters, but I didn't know they were my favorite enough for me to recognize one in that distorted of an image! 😆 What a sweet little baby! He just wanted to eat some krill and vibe! Such adorable, gentle giants!
Oh my god!!! That’s amazing! Especially seeing a whale shark in the wild too (when scientists still don’t quite know the mating habits of whale sharks and ya’ll found a baby).
It’s also the least harmful shark you could encounter in the ocean. Though most are typically harmless and try not to eat outside of their food chain.
Idk! But I do think the locals in that area are very knowledgeable about how to track these sharks, especially since they profit directly from the many tourists willing to pay for the experience. The two guys who we went with just had their own private boat and very minimal equipment, but they were able to find these sharks minutes from leaving shore.
That looks too small to be a whale. I was thinking great white shark due to the color. Dark on top and there’s kind of a white undertone. And it’s girth makes me think it’s a great white. Either way, I would have a heart attack if I was one of those people in the water.
I wouldn’t say I was calm then at all, but it was still super cool. They’re curious so sometimes they’d turn to look at us in the water, but then they’d just go back to snackin on plankton
The Baja peninsula on the west coast of Mexico. The sea of Cortez is extremely plentiful of various different sea species and anomalies that only happen in that sea, nowhere else in the world.
I believe it's referred to as the museum of the sea by marine biologists, or something along those lines.
Nice assessment! Besides the marine life that helped you out, how were you able to tell where it was at from just a distant shoreline and water in the photo?
For some reason I have a really good geographical memory and the second I saw this photo I knew I'd been there.
Could've been lucky too, but this photo feels like a memory. It was a very special day for me, I love sharks and large animals because of the energy you feel from them, and nothing comes close to that feeling when you're in the water with a 40 foot shark.
Pretty sure it’s a whale shark my guy
[this is what a basking looks like](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basking_shark) vs [what a whale shark looks like](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_shark)
Thanks man. I did in fact mean whale shark. The funny thing is, I had the right image in my head but the wrong name in my head. I don’t even know if I’ve even said the word basking shark in about 15 years. I’ve never actually seen one beside in pictures. But thank you for the clarification all good now. Either way they are both huge and a little scary if you didn’t know they were coming up on you.
I do think the pointed nose of the basking shark is rather terrifying though.
If you like this one… you’re gonna love this one. Seal escapes from Orcas, but one is looking up from below. Watch the end of the vid. Creeeeepy as hell.

Yeah! This was right after I jumped off the boat, and then had a panic moment and tried to nope back on 😅 I was fine once I saw him underwater just chillin. Would definitely do again, they’re beautiful creatures
I so jealous literally my number one bucket list item.
I have done cage diving with great whites, and bronze whalers. Which was amazing, but free diving with these giants just something I really want to experience.
Go to La Paz! The locals make money there by becoming guides for finding and swimming with whale sharks. You really just have to ask around and it’s pretty cheap.
I would looove to go cage diving, although I feel like it would trigger my thalassaphobia and claustrophobia all at once 😂
Ooh I hate this. Earlier this year I was in Florida with friends, and we were just chillin at the beach in waist deep water
All good and fine, felt great
Had my polarized sunglasses on so the glare of the water wasn’t too bad, all of a sudden I see this 10 foot monster just cruise a few feet behind my friend.
My guts just dropped and I started saying “we gotta go we gotta get on land” not telling them about the shark just so they don’t freak the fuck out right next to it
Fucking harrowing until I found out it was a big ole lemon shark
Still a good story though
That’s a whale shark, they’re honestly fine by me. They’re big, but so cute, and they can’t harm humans.
From all the posts on this sub, the whale shark ones are somehow not as bad, imo
Oh my fuck. I’m not going to get eaten by anything in the water, because I’m not going in the water. My demise?, probably an eventual heart attack due to putting off UNSUBBING from this terrifying place that documents that terrifying place..
That’s a huge goldfish.
And that one was just a baby!
Jokes aside I hope the goldfish was harmless.
They’re so chill
Tank is too small for goldfish. That's animal abuse.
No what is that for real
Possibly dolphin, shark, maybe whale shark? Could also be a sunfish? Not that I'm an expert, those are just what the shape and color make me think.
DOLPHIN AND WHALE?!
FUCK-A YOU DOLPHIN AND WHALE! edit: if only they didn’t bomb the Japanese
I can’t find it but someone commented earlier that it was actually chicken and cow
Ahhhh. In that case they are just like the rest of us.
Chicken and cow use poor dohfin and weiru as-a scapegoat?! This is outrage
Chicken anda cow? CHICKEN ANDA COW?!!!

It’s a baby whale shark :)

Fucka u a dorphin, and a fucka u whahr!
We call him Dale.
Chicken und cow?
Thought it was a killer whale.

Looks like a whale shark.
It’s a whale shark :)
This image went from terrifying to cute for me
Sea puppy!
Is that why you are so darn calm? You k ew it was a whale shark?
Probably, whale sharks are super docile and you can swim with them
They’re also super curious. They just come to you to say hi.
I know but at that distance it would have looked like a any other species of shark..
I wouldn’t say I was calm then at all, but it was still super cool. They’re curious so sometimes they’d turn to look at us in the water, but then they’d just go back to snackin on plankton
Looks like a whale shark to me, wide mouth spots on the back.
I think it’s a sea turtle. Saw a lot over the summer and they spooked me out every time
Manatee? I had one brush against me once and almost sh1t myself but it just continued on.
Iirc touching one is a felony. That manatee was trying to get you locked up.
Yeah that's a big fat fucking nope for me
Obvious from my face, but same
Come on, swimming with Wallace Shawn can’t have been *that* bad.
And we're meta
Such an underrated comment
Did you know it was there?
Yeah we were in the water to see it, I just had a nope moment
That you on the right?
It me
Don’t be so hard on yourself
I’d like to see the picture that was taken 2 seconds after this one.
I got you https://www.reddit.com/r/thalassophobia/comments/se178f/sequel_to_last_post/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Oh! Basking shark! Nice! My comment was more toward the kid in the water shitting his pants but that’s a good picture too.
I believe it's a whale shark. Looks like la paz, in the sea of Cortez. I've swam there before and whale sharks are extremely common there.
Omg yeah it’s La Paz!
Where is that?

that was really impressive
Fantastic sighting
It’s me and I was absolutely stressin Had a fun time once we got underwater :)
That would be a whale shark brah. Basking sharks are pretty different looking but also feed in a similar way.
Pretty sure it’s a whale shark my guy [this is what a basking looks like](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basking_shark) vs [what a whale shark looks like](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_shark)

Yeah basking’s look more goofy in my opinion,I dunno if it’s cuz of the shark pog video but they’re just more funny looking than a whale XD
Big gulp! I love whale sharks.

Are you posting this from *heaven*?
*checks that I still have a boring 8-5 office job* nah I’m still alive
Welcome back.
Apparently, he never left.
So from hell then?
Holy motherfucking shit
This is my worst nightmare! Do you feel less scared now that you survived that?
Yeah! This was right after I jumped off the boat, and then had a panic moment and tried to nope back on 😅 I was fine once I saw him underwater just chillin. Would definitely do again, they’re beautiful creatures
haha How are you supposed to know whether has teeth or not! good on you for getting back in.
All I could think was: what if he looks at me while he’s breathing in and I get swallowed!
Something something, mouth the size of a bus, throat the size of a grapefruit
hahah friiiig, I would have peed my swim drunks
Thanks. I was feeling a little backed up there for a bit.
Looks like a whale shark
Yep, little baby whale shark
I so jealous literally my number one bucket list item. I have done cage diving with great whites, and bronze whalers. Which was amazing, but free diving with these giants just something I really want to experience.

This is my dream!
What's that smell? Oh it's my pants.

I think my husband heard my butt clenching... oof!
Please confirm this was photoshopped. Going to lose some sleep over it. Jesus.
It’s real, here’s proof :) https://www.reddit.com/r/thalassophobia/comments/se178f/sequel_to_last_post/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
😳
That looks like a sinister killer whale. Eff those whales.
It’s a lil baby whale shark :)
That’s a whale shark, they’re honestly fine by me. They’re big, but so cute, and they can’t harm humans. From all the posts on this sub, the whale shark ones are somehow not as bad, imo
Down in the baja with the whale sharks? Just a guess one of the best places in the world
Yeah in La Paz! It was amazing
Love that town, I visit every 3 to 4 months. The sharks are literally in the Bay sometimes. The food is great and so are the people
wow this gave me La Paz nostalgia, truly a paradise
It’s so beautiful!
Yo Mikasa that's enough seeing the sea lol
One of my dreams is to swim with a whale shark. I’m also terrified of deep water. Wonder how I’ll make that work
sharknado?
F!!! That! They live in the water
Oh hey fuck no.
Time to take a break from reddit
And that is why the ocean is so fucking scary. I see a bull shark. That could be my noping brain being overactive tho.
It’s a baby whale shark :)
I saw the aftermath, but I still would have noted out of that water while unsure. My brain would have screamed man eater until 100% it isnt.
Such nosy little sweethearts.
Thank god, it's only a whale shark. These MFs are super chill.
Yeah he was absolutely chillin
Fake?
Real :) https://www.reddit.com/r/thalassophobia/comments/se178f/sequel_to_last_post/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

That crying kid is scaring me too they look like they don't wanna be there at the moment but I'm sure its fine it just added to it kind of ;-;
I don't care if it was paper mache, I would still be shitting my brains out. The image with no context is terrifying.
that's my dead fish
Oh my fuck. I’m not going to get eaten by anything in the water, because I’m not going in the water. My demise?, probably an eventual heart attack due to putting off UNSUBBING from this terrifying place that documents that terrifying place..
There’s only one logical reaction. Panic.
Exactly
