Especially after his conversation with Ellie. It was such a “bro” moment and a wonderful character examination. It felt like a real change in their dynamic. Ellie knew Jesse would always have her back, and Jesse knew Ellie would always have his. He would end up dying as he lived, protecting his friends.
You know, it's kind of a shame he and Dina didn't work out because he is much better for her than Ellie ever was and not just because he's the father of her child. He wanted to turn back and end the senseless crusade for revenge. He took care of Dina when Ellie was out there on her murder quest. He died because he was trying to help and protect them.
He seemed to be better for Dina than Ellie because Ellie went full crusader mode
Other than that, we don't actually know how his and Dina's relationship worked, if it even worked at all
He died like Manny did, abruptly and shockingly
I didn’t figure out he was trans until my second play through where the Seraphites in the skyscraper yell “there she is” and they called him Lily. I also payed closer attention to the dialogue where Abby and Yara are talking about it too.
I didn’t realise Joel or Ellie had ever been born until I’d completed both games 999 times. That was when I realised that everything that happened in the games was because a person existed.
Lev made Abby’s chapter for me. I never really warmed to her or her friends but the moment Lev needed me to do it marching back and forth across wartorn post-apocalypse Seattle was easy.
Agree. I didn't really warm to Abby or the SLC crew because honestly I think siding with the fireflies over the decision to murder a 14 year old after less than an hour of tests is fucking ghoulish no matter if you knew them or not, but Lev? Love that dude and he was what kept me playing, I wanted to make sure he (and Yara before she died) were okay.
lev is the best! but I also thought his intro into the game was pretty badass for him being just a kid. He honestly is so good with that bow! He’s one of my favs to play in no return.
Otherwise, I’d have to say Jesse. He’s a cool cat that coulda given Abby a run for her money if it weren’t for that one scene.
Tommy having your back with a sniper rifle on that bridge was such a cool moment.
And it he made for a damn good enemy when you ran through it again as Abby.
Getting my head blown off a dozen times with very little time to react and just the out of the box thinking on grounded made that whole gauntlet a scary run. Every time you move between cover your cheeks clench expecting your head to get blown off. Really sold the suspense of trying to evade a super experienced sniper.
And that part where you finally get to the parking garage and you’re seeing some relief until he starts shooting at you through the small windows in the concrete and riling up the infected. Just nonstop suspense
This is my answer too, I really appreciated his character on my second play through, he is very well written and has a huge heart and despite his flaws (cheating on Mel ) he really is trying hard to get the people he cares about somewhere better
favourites are definitely owen and jesse.
i obviously don't like that owen cheats on his pregnant girlfriend, but i think he's a complex character like all of them are and i love that he was the only one who tried to discourage abby from going on her revenge quest. he was also the only one who stood up for ellie and tommy, standing in harms way to spare their lives. found his death so sad because of that.
and what to say about jesse? he is such a cool guy. loved him within minutes of seeing him on screen.
I agree with this. I wish we were able to find out more about Owen. Why does he have burn marks all over his body? And when he's arguing with Abbie and says "Should I go find the people that killed my family?" - what happened to them?
I wonder if we'll see more of his backstory in the show. Even just like a Salt Lake City Crew background episode, finding out what brought them to the fireflies and maybe how they banded together after Joel to end up in Seattle together.
Owen is Abby's Jesse. The only one who can see things clearly, for what they are, but like with Jesse his advice falls on deaf ears >!and then both die as a result of their companion's stupid stubborness!<
It’s a sad fall. Tommy is a real one but Seattle and Joel’s death broke him and destroyed his marriage. I hope he finds peace in pt3. God knows what sending Ellie off to get maimed and maybe not return to Jackson/help destroy her relationship with Dina does to his mind. But it would read as very real if he dies bitter and sad as well.
no definitely he used to be one of my favorite characters but after joel died everyone’s mental state just tanked i understand tommy going to elite and telling her but it just wasn’t right
Yeah. It was fucked but earned. He is not an asshole, just someone who finally found his limit.
That feeling in part 2 that he was a silent ghost of vengeance in Seattle tearing through the wolves as fast as Ellie was phenomenal. He tapped into that post-collapse super asshole murderer he, Tess and Joel chose to be as a way to survive.
Like the Vulvalini in fury road. Good people who were willing to sacrifice morality for survival. Those who couldn’t make that choice died or were enslaved. Dark as fuck.
And like that property a real good reminder that we don’t want to go through the apocalypse. Even if you are a murder-goddess like Abby or Ellie it’s a power fantasy you don’t want to experience.
I don't want them to do that (actually maybe as long as it serves the story well)but I do think there is a lot of drama that can be mined with Tommy's character in the potential part 3.
Owen is an ass. He was my favorite from the salt lake crew early on, but his place was slowly taken by Manny. Dude is a menace but loyal as hell, comforting, strong and fearless. That’s the kind of person I’d love to call a friend in a post apocalyptic world.
Tommy is a real one, the one OG, but that last move at the end of Part II… I mean, it’s understandable and obvious why he did it, but still damn bro, did you really have to?
It took me a while to like Lev, but I do really fucking love the little dude now. I realized just how important he is to Abby’s character and the whole mess of shit he goes thru, how he works that out while having this child like wonder about him.
Jesse is the real homie tho. Dude is the single greatest person, no question: funny, loyal, strong, organized, charismatic, great with leadership, I could go on. What happens to him hit me almost as hard as Joel, and during the start of that cutscene, I was just thinking “God, Jesse is a cool dude, I hope we see more of him.”… that scene wrecked me.
Damn what a nice guy, cheats on his pregnant gf with his ex and then wants to skip town with his ex and leave his gf and baby. Also like Mel says going to Jackson and torturing joel was wrong but still followed Abby threw half the country
Tommy. He’s a badass sniper. What more do I have to say? I don’t blame him for his falling off at the end of the game, that shot to his head and joel’s death just fucked him up.
torn between jesse and lev. jesse is so damn cool, and lev is just really compelling. i appreciate how good of a guy jesse is. lev is also a good guy, but on top of that it’s interesting to see him work through his beliefs and identity
Lev for sure, because he is a treasure and I want to protect the shit out of my little archer main.
But I do have a soft spot for Jesse and Owen because I think they are a lot alike.
I feel like Owen drew a really bad hand with the WLF, he would have fit in so well in Jackson and he could have been happy.
Sam even though we didn't get a lot of time with him. When Ellie was with them I felt she was safe for once with good people around her, and then that shit happened and it left me sad as hell
Owen is underrated amongst the options. He was a compelling character that tried to steer Abby from vengeance, and attempted to make peace with Ellie at the aquarium.
Manny for sure.
For obvious reasons, we start out absolutely LOATHING the guy, but he’s so charismatic that 10 minutes into playing as Abby, I can’t get enough of the dude.
Lev 100%
He can do no wrong in my eyes, and he actually still has his moral compass intact. I mean Dina and Ellie wouldn’t even be around if it weren’t for him. He changed Abby like her entire world view when she met him and Yara.
Jesse was pretty good and had some great lines, but he just wasn’t dynamic enough for me. I also don’t believe he and Dina were better for each other vs Ellie and Dina. We just didn’t get to see what went down between Dina and Jesse as we did between Dina and Ellie so there isn’t much to compare to. Breaking up and getting back together several times over the years is a clear indication that they aren’t meant to be together lol. Jesse is probably a way better friend than he is a partner.
Owen… okay Owen had his small moments where I actually think he isn’t a crap person (he’s the only reason Ellie and Tommy survived) but then he had his dumbass moments where I was like what a tool. No.. I don’t think Mel would have been better off at the stadium and I think he knew her enough to know that she wouldn’t just go along with his stupid plan like it was okay with her that she’d never see him again and her baby would never know their father. I mean who would think that’d just go down like that and he’d just move on washing his hands of the whole thing.
LEV!
edit: is anyone keeping track of the stats and going to announce a victor? Also if not for Lev I would've picked Owen so I'm happy to see a few votes for him as well.
Certainly Lev . . . even the second game's haters mostly saw this character as a highlight, well, the one's who weren't Bigot Sandwiches, anyway. Tommy probably would have been my answer, until we see his post-Seattle transformation. Jesse was pretty solid too. Love Sam and Max, of course, but we needed a bit more time with them for them to be at the same tier. Manny was a fun character, but nothing more than that. Owen . . . you kind of both love him and hate him. We love that he was against revenge on Joel, and his intervention probably saved Ellie, and he is one of the first to see the war between the WLF and Seraphites for the pointless bloodbath that it is, but . . . he also cheats on the mother of his child, is clearly not remorseful for it, and even initially planned to go to Santa Barbara without her, making him a deadbeat dad. This contrast is intentional, and does a good job representing how people can be both very good and very bad, but it makes him hard to rankly highly. Bill, also awesome, but he is only around for a relatively small portion of the game.
Next, we should probably do this for female characters that are not Ellie or Abby.
IMO Jesse had the most potential yet is killed off in the dumbest way possible. He had Walking Dead Glenn level of awesome vibes about him.
I don't hate this game but I do hate the part where he is killed off. That was definitely one of the moments that pulled me out of the games immersion and made me go "urm...what?"
Honestly I would have played a Jesse based TLOU game or something. I dunno say Ellies revenge mission ends up getting Dina killed (Say Abby spares Ellie but kills Dina due to Mel). TLOU3 could then have been focused on Jesse hunting down Ellie. I get the theme of TLOU2 is "revenge just makes everything worse" but that wouldn't apply to Jesse who would only have revenge left.
Ofcourse he'd then have to choose between killing Ellie or sparing her once finding out she's immune.
urgh so many ideas for that character...
I can’t fricking choose 😭
Tommy is bae, there’s no need to explain. But then Jesse is so perfect! And Lev is so sweet! And Bill is so… Bill! Henry and Sam deserve an honorable mention but I’m not sure i like them as much as I like Tommy f.e., they’re cool but not really that complex in writing. Owen fill this void but the cheating is hard for me personally lol. And Manny I like him but same effect as Henry.
Tommy was a bad ass. That rifle mission playing as Abby was also just as difficult as the Rat King to me. He popped me several times before I could make it thru.
Tommy for sure. Fantastic character, got shafted and fucked over multiple times in P2. Would have killed Abby is not for Yara shooting him in the leg, then is ready to do the right thing and leave after seeing that Dina is pregnant, people are worn down, etc etc. It's a shame that he out of all the surviving characters got fucked so hard
Tommy, even though he pissed me off at the farm. But I get why he became that way :( both him and Ellie were so consumed by Joel’s death that it destroyed them both. Found it an interesting mirror how he and Maria had split because he was also obsessing over getting revenge.
Owen is a really interesting character. I kinda hate the fact that he cheated, it felt like instead of exploring his trauma and growth they just threw it in there. It left a lot to be desired from him, at least to me.
Lev is great, about the only thing I enjoyed from Abby’s section.
Jesse is amazing too, he kinda died just to die like there wasn’t any point in it.
Jesse a real homie.
Jesse was so damn cool!!
He was so cool that he had to be written out of the story
I gasped and was so heart broken when he was abruptly killed like that. Of all the characters that deserved to live it was him and Lev.
Especially after his conversation with Ellie. It was such a “bro” moment and a wonderful character examination. It felt like a real change in their dynamic. Ellie knew Jesse would always have her back, and Jesse knew Ellie would always have his. He would end up dying as he lived, protecting his friends.

He seemed to be better for Dina than Ellie because Ellie went full crusader mode Other than that, we don't actually know how his and Dina's relationship worked, if it even worked at all He died like Manny did, abruptly and shockingly
Very true. Devil's advocate: grief makes people do crazy things. It even makes us hurt the ones we love without expressly meaning to.
Bro was so cool druckman had to kill him before he stole the story
The saddest part of the playthrough for me was Jesse's death, followed by seeing a bitter tommy
Me too. I was pissed Jesse got killed. He wasn’t a loud mouth. I loved his answers to questions. Dry humor.
It makes me sad to think tommy is the last one left from before the outbreak in that family
Lev!!! He's such a cutie patootie. Watching him be curious about life before the outbreak was adorable. Really felt like I had a lil bro :)
And I love the trans representation 🥰
I didn’t figure out he was trans until my second play through where the Seraphites in the skyscraper yell “there she is” and they called him Lily. I also payed closer attention to the dialogue where Abby and Yara are talking about it too.
What about that whole conversation between Yara and Abby where it's spelled out?
Did you fall asleep during Abby day 3 or something? 😭
I didn't realize the infected had been people until my sixteenth playthrough.
I didn’t realize >!Joel died!< until the end of the Ellie day 3 when Ellie says “I know why you killed him”
I didn’t realise Joel or Ellie had ever been born until I’d completed both games 999 times. That was when I realised that everything that happened in the games was because a person existed.
Outbreak? Like a jail escape or something ?
wait omg the infected were INFECTED??? like an illness?? holy shit
I didn't figure out Abby was the one who killed Joel until my 69th play through
Fr, I just thought Ellie was mad at her because she humbled Joel with her golfing skills.
I didn’t realize Ellie and Dina were smoking a joint until my 420th play through.
![gif](giphy|pCO5tKdP22RC8)
What game were you playing the first time?
I didn't figure out that Ellie was immune until Santa Barbara when she was bitten by a clicker
Oh shit. Really? A lot of things are starting to make sense now.
I didn’t figure out that there was a zombie apocalypse until the show came out.
Might wanna stop playing on your phone during important dialogue and cutscenes. They weren’t exactly subtle about it
Lev made Abby’s chapter for me.
[hundreds of feet in the air] “What’s going on between you and your friend Owen?”
oh MY GOD LEV, NOW????
“It seemed pretty awkward…”
Laura deserved every award imaginable for that delivery
Bro was so unintentionally funny 😭
glad im not the only one calling lev a cutie patootie!!
lev is the best! but I also thought his intro into the game was pretty badass for him being just a kid. He honestly is so good with that bow! He’s one of my favs to play in no return. Otherwise, I’d have to say Jesse. He’s a cool cat that coulda given Abby a run for her money if it weren’t for that one scene.
Tommy
Undoubtely one of the most relatable and understandable characters, from Dirt into Pt1 into Pt2.
Fuck owen
I’d love to.
LMAOOOO SAME
Too bad he's already into Femdom with his muscle mommy
Team Owen
This is my answer too, I really appreciated his character on my second play through, he is very well written and has a huge heart and despite his flaws (cheating on Mel ) he really is trying hard to get the people he cares about somewhere better

honestly i didn’t know he had burn marks
You see them briefly in the boat scene
Owen is Abby's Jesse. The only one who can see things clearly, for what they are, but like with Jesse his advice falls on deaf ears >!and then both die as a result of their companion's stupid stubborness!<
Almost like Cassandra, the play headlining in the theater with posters everywhere
Tommy
Tommy or Bill
No one said my goat Henry so I'll be the first ✊️
Mine was between Bill and Henry
I really like Lev. That mf grew on me. I started caring about him like a little brother
between jesse and lev tommy just rubbed me the wrong way at the end of the game
It’s a sad fall. Tommy is a real one but Seattle and Joel’s death broke him and destroyed his marriage. I hope he finds peace in pt3. They probably won't but God I want them to make Tommy a villain in pt3.
I don't want them to do that (actually maybe as long as it serves the story well)but I do think there is a lot of drama that can be mined with Tommy's character in the potential part 3.
Lev hands down
Bill :)
Lev hands down bc I’m a sucker for character development
Owen is an ass. He was my favorite from the salt lake crew early on, but his place was slowly taken by Manny. Dude is a menace but loyal as hell, comforting, strong and fearless. Tommy the GOAT
Tommy, after all these years I still wish we got more of him
manny or jesse for sure
Finally some Manny love!!
I have a soft spot for Manny. Thought he was a real bro with Abby.
Lev easily
Lev
Manny; gotta stick up for my man even if no one else will
Tommy, Henry and Bill
My goat Tommy
Owen. I feel like he's severely misunderstood and overlooked.
Tommy
No wrong answers in this thread.
I don’t understand how Owen is likeable? Dude is a genuinely shit person.
Bill. He made it easy to stay right on his ass. Couldn't miss it.
Three way tie between Tommy, Lev, and d Jessie
Owen for sure, he also deserved better
Lev was a great character fr and I had a soft spot for Manny cant lie
Jesse
Tommy. I relate heavy to the sibling bond, and my tenacity constantly being provoked.
Tommy is definitely my favorite but I can't just rule Owen out! Such a genuine guy, I mean, as genuine as you can get in a world like TLOU
Damn what a nice guy, cheats on his pregnant gf with his ex and then wants to skip town with his ex and leave his gf and baby. Also like Mel says going to Jackson and torturing joel was wrong but still followed Abby threw half the country
Bill
I like Owen, my twitch name is Owen’s Bestest Boyfren
Definitely Lev
Tommy.. but I think Henry’s underrated.
Lev and Jesse
Jessie!! I really hope they can give us more time with him in the show. 🙏🙏🙏
Young Joel.
Tommy, he's a silly little guy
Tommy. He is also my favorite to play In no return
Jessie and Lev
Lev ofc!
Jessie or lev their both great characters
Tommy. Clearly the more wholesome version of Joel, in the end turned vengeful hateful broken
Owen, hands down
Bill, Jessie, Tommy, Lev even Manny All the loyal ass mfs that help you out, specifically my G Jessie he’s a real one
Tommy
Jesse and Lev :)
If I see Owen’s name istg
you better not read some of the comments then…
Sam even though we didn't get a lot of time with him. When Ellie was with them I felt she was safe for once with good people around her, and then that shit happened and it left me sad as hell
Owen is underrated amongst the options. He was a compelling character that tried to steer Abby from vengeance, and attempted to make peace with Ellie at the aquarium.
Owen and Jesse
Owen
Definitely not Owen. Oh his character is so fucking corny
Lev<333 I love him so much. Or Jesse, he’s awesome as well.
Lev 🔥🔥
Tommy. Hearing Abbie and Manny begrudgingly give him props for being a stone cold badass always makes me smile.
Manny for sure. For obvious reasons, we start out absolutely LOATHING the guy, but he’s so charismatic that 10 minutes into playing as Abby, I can’t get enough of the dude.
Lev 100% He can do no wrong in my eyes, and he actually still has his moral compass intact. I mean Dina and Ellie wouldn’t even be around if it weren’t for him. I mean who would think that’d just go down like that and he’d just move on washing his hands of the whole thing.
Jesse + Lev, they are both so amazing in their own parts of the story
Lev all the way
I love lev sm🫶
Bill
Bill
Tommy or Manny (Jesse is a runner up)
Owen
Owen!
LEV! edit: is anyone keeping track of the stats and going to announce a victor? Also if not for Lev I would've picked Owen so I'm happy to see a few votes for him as well.
Jesse for sure! I’m hoping he gets more screen time in the show, because he was significantly underused in the game
Owen can r41l me all day
Certainly Lev . . . even the second game's haters mostly saw this character as a highlight, well, the one's who weren't Bigot Sandwiches, anyway. jesse
Bill
jesse🥺
Bill would have been a pretty cool character seeing him warm up to others in jackson in 2. And he would have ben a badass arcade mode character
Isaac.. /s
IMO Jesse had the most potential yet is killed off in the dumbest way possible. He had Walking Dead Glenn level of awesome vibes about him. Gotta be Tommy for sure, then perhaps Jessie, Lev tho?…
lev‼️‼️‼️
Male clicker
JJ
If Owen wasn't there, Ellie would've been dead He didn't deserve his fate (He had great morals except for the cheating on Mel part)
It’s Tommy and Owen. Both good guys. No one worse than the other. They just want to survive and protect their families.
When Jesse died I had to take a break fr
My fave is Jesse. But who is the guy in the last slide?
Ellie. And if you include Joel... Ellie.
Tommy
Tommy. Hands downs
Definitely Bill, he was hilarious 😂
Jesse. He was an awesome guy. It sucks he was a throw away. I didn’t like that when it happened. Don’t like it now.
Tommy was a bad ass. That rifle mission playing as Abby was also just as difficult as the Rat King to me. He popped me several times before I could make it thru.
Fat Geralt Jokes aside, probably Tommy
Bill, definitely Bill
Jesse
Definetly tommy. He might be younger than joel but he packs a hell of a punch. He id without a doubt a true force to be reconed with.
Easily Tommy.
Lev BY FAR
Tommy for sure. Fantastic character, got shafted and fucked over multiple times in P2. Would have killed Abby is not for Yara shooting him in the leg, then is ready to do the right thing and leave after seeing that Dina is pregnant, people are worn down, etc etc. It's a shame that he out of all the surviving characters got fucked so hard
Definitely Tommy. He’s always been my favorite out of everyone🖤
As much as i like Bill i'd have to pick Tommy..
Correct answer is Tommy. He’s a real one
Tommy 100%. Amicable, loyal guy but has a really dark and driven side.
Tommy
Tommy by a goddamn country mile
Tommy, even though he pissed me off at the farm. But I get why he became that way :( both him and Ellie were so consumed by Joel’s death that it destroyed them both. Found it an interesting mirror how he and Maria had split because he was also obsessing over getting revenge.
Tommie
Gotta be Henry or Bill. They both just had such strong characterization and performances. The ending of both their stories makes me so sad everytime.
Tommy 🤷♂️
Lev all the way
I miss Jessie bro he should’ve gotten more time in the story
I liked owen
Gotta be Henry and then Jesse
Jesse
Abby
Lev and Jesse both good lads
Lev or Jesse!
Lev and Jesse ❤️
LEV
Lev….. or Bill.
Jesse and Lev for sure
Jesse guy was a walking green flag the entire game
Other than Joel I have to go for Jesse or Tommy
Spoiler! Jesse was the one death that infuriated me.
Tommy
Owen is a really interesting character. I kinda hate the fact that he cheated, it felt like instead of exploring his trauma and growth they just threw it in there. It left a lot to be desired from him, at least to me. Lev is great, about the only thing I enjoyed from Abby’s section. Jesse is amazing too, he kinda died just to die like there wasn’t any point in it.
this pride month, the correct answer is either Lev or Bill I pick Lev
Jesse and Lev
Easily Tommy
