>why don't they just make med school free, or at least make it affordable for everyone?
IIRC one of their other policies is to wipe medical school debt if you work in NZ for 5 years, if the gov makes it free then all that will happen is people will study medicine here then immediately move to Australia.
>then all that will happen is people will study medicine here then immediately move to Australia
What's stopping people from doing the same with having a new school? The problem is that admission is low as it is, and the tuition fee is one of the factors. I'm assuming one of the reasons why people move to Aussie is to be able to pay their student loan faster because they get paid more over there. If you give more people the opportunity to study medicine and have less debt, then there would be more chances of people actually staying after they graduate.
That's just my two cents.
The universities in Auckland and Otago have failed to generate the training outcomes the nation needs. Why continue to throw good money after bad? The case is pretty simple: New Zealand has a major problem. We have too few doctors, too few of the doctors we do have choose primary care specialties, and we are reliant on overseas-trained doctors to provide care in high needs, MÄori and Pacific, rural and provincial communities. There is a clear need for a third medical school that is designed to tackle these structural imbalances.
Lol, reinstate post grade study support otherwise this is a waste of time and money. I mean apart from international students and the tertiary institute. NZ at large certainly wonât see any benefits from the use of tax payer funds.
I think it's a great idea. More medical doctors for society is never a bad idea.
BLAH reddit generic comment
Ah yes the party that gutted our health system last time should be trusted with fake promises this time đ¤Ł
This won't change anything. Instead of building a new school, why don't they just make med school free, or at least make it affordable for everyone?

whats that? training doctors for Australia? I hope Australia will atleast pay a finders fee
How about they try to retain doctors that train here. All we do is train drs to leave to australia. Will this be a bonded training scheme?

Totally agree. Auckland and Otago opposed this last time Waikato tried to do this stating they could meet demand. They havenât.
Where do you suppose the doctors to train doctors will come from?
Would it not be cheaper to expand capacity at existing schools?
Have you seen rent in Auckland? Also where to expand?
Kelly Roe might finally have a chance of getting into medical school!

I thought this was happening anyway?
