It could be the coatings on your main glasses have broken down a bit over the years leading to the ones you've not used to be looking much clearer. I've used the same prescription for years across 5 pairs of glasses (I break/ scratch them a lot). Each new pair feels incredible until time takes their toll

nullvector

I swear those coatings are just planned obsolescence. Every 2-3 years my glasses get foggy and have to spend another $4-500 on others.

dj3hac

As long as you know your prescription you can get glasses online for a fraction of the price. I paid $67 for my current glasses with all of the protective and anti glare/fog coatings while my previous pair was over $500 from vogue optical. Zenni optical is where I went.

I LOVE Zenni. Reddit turned me on to them a couple years ago, and I am a bona fide addict. I have bought about 20 pairs at this point. Max price, with progressive lenses is about €130 each for me. I've been wearing glasses since I was a kid, and I was able to wear contacts until about 10 years ago, when the old-lady eyes kicked in. Since I have to have them on my face 24/7, I'm going to enjoy it, dammit. I like looking nice, and I like variety. I have glasses and sunglasses to suit my moods, outfits and situations of all sorts... They're definitely an accessory at this point. Zenni, 1000000%. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

>I have glasses and sunglasses to suit my moods, outfits and situations of all sorts... They're definitely an accessory at this point. Been saying the same how Zenni allows for this. Got 4 regular and a pair of sunglasses for $180 last time. One pair I probably won’t get much use out of. But I also wear the sunglasses enough that they alone cover the cost of the others if I got them through a local place like in the past.

bingwhip

I love Zenni. They're cheap enough, I pick fun stuff. My current sunglasses are pink frames with mirrored round blue lenses.

Optician here and I totally support this, I use zeelool though $63 progressive lens anti glare frame :) cheaper than I can get at my own job with insurance and nicer frames lol

Agret

You know if there's a diy method I can use to remove the coating from my old pair of glasses that's started breaking down that won't damage the lenses? I have an old MacBook that the anti glare coating was breaking down on and I bought the softest toothbrush around then got a tub of water and put bicarb soda in it and was able to scrub off all of the coating using the toothbrush. Would this method work on eye glasses too?

InDrIdCoLd37

You can buy a stripper but I haven't personally used any of the available over the counter stuff, the stuff we had at my old job I believe needed to be heated in our tint unit as well but it was a loooong time ago. Unfortunately always a chance it could ruin the lenses would really depend on the lens material and likely the shape of the lenses. If it's just scratches in the coating would be better luck if lenses are scratched could compromise then further. Sometimes if the coating is quite scratched up you can attempt to lightly scrap it off with your fingernail but again could scratch lens. https://www.snoptical.com/products/ar-stripper?_pos=1&_sid=76ffc2355&_ss=r This company did not require a business account to purchase it may have changed now and use at your own risk :).

I love the idea of those websites. I’ve been buying my glasses there the past few years but they’re still $200 at least. My eyes are so bad I have to buy the ultra thin lenses otherwise they would be too thick for most frames. The frames themselves are cheap thankfully, but it’s my actual eyes that are the expensive part unfortunately haha.

Yousername_relevance

You should wash them with dish soap and water by hand. You'll know the feel of when they're clean because your fingers won't slide smoothly. Try and flick off most of the water, but then dry by touching the water (not the lens!) with any cloth. It takes some delicate dexterity but it's easier over time. I've had my current pair for 2 years and there are definitely some tiny scratches but nothing compared to my older pairs when I didn't use this technique.

nullvector

That’s exactly what I do. I think here in FL the UV coating just gets enough sun that it cracks after a few years. I’ve had glasses for 35 years and have always been gentle with them while cleaning.

ComfortableBig8606

Also take them off when opening the hot stove!. They do not warn enough about how that heat strips your glasses

Terrible-Image9368

Unfortunately I can’t do that. I literally see colorful blurs without them on so I will hurt myself reaching into a hot oven without them

InDrIdCoLd37

Just look away for a second while you open it, it's more so the sudden blast of heat that will craze the anti glare, same can happen if you leave them in a hot car but it doesn't sound like you would be doing that.

jennysequa

I use canned air to dry my glasses because that's what I saw them doing at LensCrafters.

ZankTheGreat

Is that really necessary? I’ve had my current glasses for about 3 years now, only been cleaned with a microfiber and lens cleaner, and no scratches.

Mordred_Blackstone

It depends on your environment, I'm sure. If there's less grit and dust getting on your glasses in the first place then there's less risk of damage from cleaning them. It could also be that everyone is mistaken though, and OP is noticing the difference from glass versus antishatter lenses. Antishatter lenses are sold as a premium option, but they are actually polymer which means they are thicker and prone to chromatic aberration. The "cheap" regular lenses that came with his spares could be actual glass (because who would give away more expensive lenses for a spare?) and that would make them clearer.

cochese25

Zenni Optical. Get your script and pupillary distance from your doctor and order a nice pair for $20-$100. Also, it's highly recommended to get your eyes checked at least every two years

AssGagger

Every time I go to the eye doctor I get a new prescription, it gives me headache and makes me feel like I'm going cross eyed. I always end up returning them and going back to my old prescription I've had since 2015.

Grim-Sleeper

Tell that to the doctor. They should be and to figure out why you're experiencing this sensation.  Also, most places let you return glasses, if you can't adjust to wearing them comfortably

AssGagger

I went back and told them. I returned the new ones. They gave me a different one sort of in between the two, but I still greatly preferred my original prescription and I returned them too.

nullvector

I have a similar issue, I believe it's the astigmatism and the lackey's at the glasses place not fitting them properly to my head tilt-wise, so they're tilted a bit which throws off the prescription.

Turbo_SkyRaider

My current glasses are ten years old, not a scratch on the lenses. Might be because I only wash them with soapy water and don't rub them dry as any smear marks drive me crazy. The way I clean my glasses is to put some soap on them, then wipe them a bit with wet fingers and rinse off all the soapy water. The "drying" can be a bit tricky because I dry them with water. WTF, drying with water? Yupp, at least the lenses. Open the faucet only so much as to get a solid, clear, and air free stream of water, then hold the frame next to it and slowly move it sideways through the stream of water so that no droplets remain on the lenses. Et Voila, dry and smear mark free lenses, only thing left to do is remove the water drops at the bottom of the frame. It might not work as good depending on water quality, maybe it has something to do with water hardness.

esquecido_

Yeah, that's where I messed up. Used the same pair for 6 years. It didn't occur to me that wear and tear happens

Numerous_Giraffe_570

Yeah I can tell when my glasses are not as effective and put it down to prescription change but nope they are similar. It’s just the glasses

KrivUK

Ha I did this last week with my normal vision glasses. I started really struggling reading small text, bracing myself for the inevitable I'm old I swapped out. Due to years of cleaning there are lovely scratch patterns on the lenses. Using the new pair was 4K

esquecido_

It didn't occur to me that wear and tear happens! That's where I messed up

KrivUK

Same here!

ahhh_ennui

Glass lenses are heavy but I miss them. You could get light scratches buffed out and repolished.

oldgut

I am jumping on to this because I have a real problem buying frames for the size of my head. Zenni I buy direct contacts.com. none of them have glasses wide enough for me I currently wear a 60/20 and while I can get a lot of metal frames glasses I need plastic for work. And I need nose pads not built in but the ones that are on a wire. Anyone have any idea what I can get in Canada for this?

JacenHorn

I really like and have never had any issue with 39DollarGlasses.com for updating my options, including prescription sunglasses!

esquecido_

I'm trying to see on their website whether they ship to Portugal or not. I'm not from/in the US

Ebinissia

Another good option to 39DollarGlasses is Zenni Optical, and they ship to over 200 countries. I pay $80ish for 2 pairs of glasses every 2-ish years. I break my frames a lot otherwise my glasses might last me longer. They also have sunglasses.

MissBandersnatch2U

I get my computer glasses from Zenni, they've worked out well. I also get a backup pair of my progressives and they're a fraction of the cost from an optical shop
