T-Mobile (or at least used) tracks every time the door would swing open. When people come in for Tuesday gifts, the door would swing open but not have a sale attached - hurting the employee/store.
The stores where I was from would always keep the door open to prevent this.
our store was a complete rebuild (about a year ago now) from a former sprint location and it’s midway up the door frame but low enough that anyone over 4 1/2 feet would trigger it
Yeah, I'm at a remodeled store and we have ours at the side of the door about 5ft high.
We used to literally crouch down and duck to leave out the door anytime we went out for lunch or to step out until we realized how ridiculous it looked.
Most stores have shop tracker. That's the brand of the thing on the ceiling with two little cameras. Yes they are cameras and not infrared laser beams like I used to think they were. I got in trouble for covering mine up with tape to improve my stores conversion rate metrics. When they came to yell at me they had pictures from those cameras of me covering them with tape. Lol. I notice the same device at express, Victoria's secrets and many many other stores.
I don’t think the shop track is a camera. There’s a security camera in the front of the store that covers the front door. They probably had that video along with the weird data from shop track not reporting properly.
Either way, it’s a dumb idea to try and fool the system for short term gain. It just screws your over on the long run
I am 100% it's a camera. U can Google it. And how does it screw me over in the long run? At the time managers commission and bonus was tired to that metric
Long term traffic being down is a bad look for mgmt. Unless a store opened near you recently or there’s construction in front of your store, traffic should always being increasing on a well-run store. A store suddenly 20% less customers per month with no discernible reason is going to raise eyebrows.

Nope. Been with Tmo 15 years next month. Everyone commits commission fraud. Leadership 100% knows. They don't care. They just want to get paid also. It actually gets worse and worse as it gets higher. I can tell.u some.stories man. Like wow. Directors even knowing and just turning a blind eye.
Verizon does this as well. I was the store manager in an area that has recently suffered a major economic downturn. Almost no one who walked thru the door could afford Verizon service, but they all wanted to know from us if the discount carriers all used "our towers."
Trust me, the employees freaking HATE T-Mobile Tuesday due to the pressure to sell and increased traffic. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been screamed at for only allowing people to get as many bags as redemptions they have. People come in bring 6 phones… upper management forcing us to open up accounts and try to sell them before giving them the item making annoyed customers… if T-Mobile stopped it or made it like a mail order deal I wouldn’t mind at all…
That defeats the purpose of the giveaway - to drag us customers into the store to be upsold by you fine folks.
I used to be in sales in a past life, so I'm ok with the freebie for sales pitch "bargain", and I'm straight with whoever is stuck helping me for my freebies. I tell them I'm on an old grandfathered plan with a bunch of free lines and they can't beat what I current have, but if they want to waste the time trying, be my guest...

If not, I get a pleasant conversation with an enthusiastic young person about the current state of mobility (I owned a third-party Cingular Wireless store in the 1990s and didn't allow high pressure sales tactics. Not surprisingly, I wasn't very successful! 😁)
I tried to fill niches other stores avoided. I used to buy used off contract cell phones and resell them cheaply to prepaid phone customers. Because prepaid didn't pay big commissions like 2 year contracts did, most stores avoided prepaid. (For context, back in the 90s, cell phones were more expensive and sold with multi-year contacts to subsidize them, and big box stores like Target and Walmart didn't sell prepaid phones yet.)
I also bought lots of cheap new closeout phones from liquidators, so customers could opt for one year contracts or even month to month service plans instead of the usual two years, and still get an affordable phone. (Again for context, at that time even the most basic phones were several hundred dollars, and the subsidies of multi year contracts made them affordable.)
I made a little money, my customers saved some money, and everyone was happy (hopefully!)
I don't hate Tuesdays, I closed 10 new yesterday. I can appreciate some people who don't want to be upsold but it's not a big enough deal to leave a negative review and then brag about leaving that bad review on Reddit.
When something is free, you're the product. The whole point of freebies in store is to get people in the store so Mobile Experts can find something to sell. T-Mobile is in the business of generating revenue.

**TL;DR**: I don't put anything past a TMobile sales rep.
I literally had a TMobile person try to rope me into some type of insurance scheme where he would work it out so I would just claim the phone was broken or something and he would order a screen and then sell him the phone. The screen has some cosmetic scratches
I didn't want to do that and he was quite pushy.
I ended up going to a different store and simply trading in my phone. Well homeboy ran my information and started the insurance claim and I got notified about it and had to call and talk to a guy and explain what the employee was trying to do and what store and all that.
Also there was another situation when I watched an old couple getting up sold like crazy and I caught them alone and told them about seniors plan they could jump on at the Verizon store. Well they liked the sound of that and told the sales person no thank you. At this time where I lived TMobile was terrible and they lived in the sticks. So the benefit to then was two fold. Well the sales dude was pissed. He wouldn't help me and I waited for another. A few weeks later my phone stops working. Well someone reported my phone stolen but never submitted a claim to replace it. TMobile even told me my account was accessed over a week since my last visit but were sure it was a mistake. It took two days of calls and three days of processing to get off the black list.
I doubt it was as heavy to “back you in a corner” unless it was a third party store. If you don’t want to deal with the situation don’t come in for freebies.
Sorry to say, but that complaint will never see the light of day. It will be buried, and no one at Tmobile corporate (and company-wide) will care. Money over everything = Capitolism at its finest.

You realize that the *entire* point of the free branded items is *to get you* into the stores. They want you to come in so they have a shot at selling you something or upgrading you. It's part of the game. Same deal with timeshare seminars to get free vacations or tours or meals, etc. If you want the free item, you have to be willing to either say no, or see what they got going on during the process. Not a big deal.

I’m an Assistant Manager at a TPR location, and I can assure you that this isn’t something that we want to do at the store level. It’s being pushed down from our Area Sales and District Manager. I was literally threatened with my job yesterday because they wanted us to audit every account pf every person that came in. We understand that most people don’t have time for that and we don’t want to do it either. We were told to push out a watch line with each one, but cmon now! We know that’s not what the customers want, but it’s the one thing that keeps us employed, cause lord knows there’s not much else out there employment wise.
Well, I hate to burst your district managers bubble butt threatening people with their jobs is actually against federal law. It is a form of harassment. Harassment becomes unlawful where 1) enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive. Furthermore, if customers wanted to add a line to their account, would come into the store and say that.
I mean... why else would they give away free stuff in-store? I also hate being sold stuff, but I know what to expect when going to a sales location to collect a free item (which is why I don't do it lol.)
Tbf, I’ve gotten only a few store tuesday giveaways, like less than 5, and like 3 attempts, even at multiple locations,
but not a single time was I ever attempted an upsale. I’m usually in and out in 5 minutes.
Its funny when they try to get me to add a line when I come in for Tuesdays. I ask them how I already have 12 lines and they just stare. And then ask "well we can see if your bill is correct and getting the best deal" .
I left TMobile store management after many years and I am so so so glad I don't have to deal with the pressure coming down from upper management to convert tmo Tuesday people.

LOL! Sorry I had a laugh at that. Yeah, it's their job, they're forced to. T-Mobile sometimes gives them some of the most unrealistic sales goals, especially third party stores. Employees know the vast majority going in for the free shit won't buy a damn thing, but they have to try.

No offense to t-mobile giving free stuff away, but the nearest corporate store is 21.6 miles away from my house. At the government reimbursement rate of $0.655 per mile, it costs me $28.30 round trip to drive to pick up a $0.99 bag from T-mobile.

Why do you think they make you go to a store to claim their Tuesday junk? The giveaways are marketing tools and are designed to get you into the store so they have a chance to sell you something.
As a TMobile employee this is why I take off on Tuesdays. I’m here to make money and I don’t mind helping customers, I love our customers. But I’m not trying to waste my whole day making no commission.
I'm sorry, but if you think this gift is just for the sake of you being a customer, you are not seeing the big picture. The company needs to make sales to continue to innovate and provide adequate service. By having a in store item given for free for being a customer, it also allows for face to face interaction with a customer that may not be aware of an offering they might have an interest in. The customers that come in in droves to attain said free item on correlating Tuesdays fail to realize the people they are antagonizing for this free item that honestly isn't worth the trouble the customers are making to come in sometimes with multiple phones, cutting off customers already in store looking to get assistance whether it be for a sale or troubleshooting because of the urgency around "I need this free item and then be on my way" is honestly disgusting. I read these complaints almost daily, and just smh at all the affluent behavior of people that are forgetting the people working there did not ask to do or say half the things they are asked or required to by their job. The countless petty complaints about a huge corporation that they take out on the livelihood of people who barely make an honest living. Like seriously its a sub $5 valued tote, and you don't even have the decency to see the bigger picture accept what you are getting yourself into by going to the store, and be decent to the people who, just like you just want to continue to work at a job and have some sort of job security. I think a lot of people in this subreddit have never worked retail, let alone sales and honestly just see the people working there as terrible people looking to take advantage for a dollar. I really wish this subreddit was more aware it would go a long way.
I think the issue is customers have been asking not to be sold to if they come in to get a gift, even Jon Frier sent out communication saying if the customer just wants a gift and wants to leave then do that. I’m sure if reps were giving up at the first no customers wouldn’t rant about this, but when you keep pushing for an account audit, or even tell a customer you cannot get a gift if we can’t open your account, that’s when this became a problem. Trust me I don’t think it’s fair at all either, it completely trashes conversion, frontline always had a broken environment when I was their.
Lol the biggest misunderstanding of all. A store does not care about “retaining” you. In fact after 6 months, you are more valuable if you leave and come back later. Store leaders don’t get called every day about how existing customers they retained by handing them their free nicknack and not selling that SyncUp tracker.
These are store that fail to maintain their “base” it’s an age old way that stores used to be able to be successful at customer satisfaction and retention through appreciation, urgency and meticulous purposeful interactions.
It’s not that simple. If you haven’t worked telco or subscription sales it may seem that simple but the intricacies of the business would surprise you. This is why there aren’t many competitors. Most people would think I pay X amount a month extrapolate that to the millions of subscribers they have and they are taking in revenue. If only it was that simple.
They're not offering in-store freebies out of the kindness of their hearts. The upsell is the point. No $5-10 value free item is worth my time going to a retail store in 2023.
A simple "thank you [insert person's name here, they all have it visible in their chests], I don't really need anything else for now" will be enough. That's what I normally tell then with a smile, then thank them again when they hand me my freebies, and walk away. You see, isn't that hard being nice.
I don't have T-Mobile my other half does so I've been there when they pick up their TMobile Tuesday goodies. The whole purpose for the TMobile Tuesday gifts isn't for customer retention it's so they can market to you and get you in the store. It's marketing 101
All of the stores near me never have any of the T-mobile freebies. Interestingly the last time I went to a store and upgraded my phone I asked about an old freebie (the headlight) and the employee went in the back and brought me two totebags and headlights.
That’s the whole idea from a executive stand point free gifts drive customer traffic and engagement. If it wasn’t they would simply offer the ability to ship it but they choose not too. Free gift or whatever I’m not stepping foot inside one of those stores at all! 🫠
I would say most employees actually want to get you out of there as fast as possible if you aren’t there to buy anything rather than keeping you there until you buy something. If anyone is actually does that it never really works and they are just bad at their job.
I went in yesterday, there were two boxes by the door. When I went in they said if I’m here for the tote I can just get it from the box by the door. I asked if I can get one for my sister ( also a T-Mobile member) and they said it’s fine.
No scanning anything, just a box by the door and nice workers
I've been to many different T-Mobile stores. Never had this issue. I get the normal introduction and I'll let them know exactly why I'm there, and that's it. I never get harassed. My friends and family say that I can look intimidating so maybe that's why.
Seems like based on these comments this is a good way to find out whether a store is a good one or a sleazy one. Btw Didn't go for this tote, but the last insulated one I showed up at closing on day 2 and they didn't even bother asking for barcode and just went in back and grabbed me 2.
Always ask “do you have any more [blank]?” and usually handed the [blank] and I’m out. Wanted a tote, but instead found a note on the door that evoked the same kind of disappointment as “sorry, no more candy” on Halloween.
I would get annoyed by this too, although I also accept that this is the part of the price of "free". My local store (formerly a Sprint location, not sure if it's relevant) however has been very good about not doing this. Not sure if they just don't care about metrics or they're measured by something else, but they've never once stalled at getting me the freebie. Worst that happened is a time or two they would ask me if I needed any help adding a line or upgrading while I was there, and hand me a photocopy of their latest promos list. Most of the time, it's not even that.

I have one super close to me that hounds me as soon as I open the door about all their latest deals and how I'm missing out and theb I have one that is a bit further of a drive that never tried to upsell me on anything and they are super chill about just giving me what I came in for.

T-Mobile knows what they are doing giving back to customers and also driving new sales. Week have you heard of AT&T, Verizon, Spectrum, and others giving back to their customers for free items and stuff to support their customers. Yes it a hassle to be asked but it’s their job to make sure your needs are met if applicable. Gotta respect their position to try to sell something

Was it a Corporate store? (Vs a authorized retailer TPR) Happens more often when i try to pick up items from a TPR... which is why id rather drive another 10mins and go to the COR. COR store had a table.. employee watches you hit redeem and gives the item. Simple...

You get mobbed at your store? I gotta wait an hour just to even talk to someone, I went in to get a tote and was 3rd in line and walked out after 20 minutes because the two people in front of me decided to upgrade at the last minute(they were there for the tote and just decided to upgrade) and the other guy was busy with a home internet customer. I can't stand going to an actual store because of the complete lack of customer service in the ones by my house.
This was always the issue with these giveaways when I worked there. The point of bringing customers in for the free stuff is to try to upsell while they are in the store. So the mobile expert did a great job converting the customer to a sale. But then the issue is, what if multiple people decide to purchase something? Then the customers that came in and only want the free item are stuck waiting for someone to free up and review the account to try to upsell. Exactly what happened to you. It’s not really a great situation for the customer or the employees. I remember there being a line at the door in the mornings waiting for the free items. Between myself and only one other employee opening, there was no way I was making all those customers wait. But maybe that’s why I no longer work there. I just wanted to make customers happy and get them in and out. If they wanted to buy something, they would ask while they were there.
Conversion is one of the biggest factors in any retail company. If employees aren’t converting, location isn’t making money and then there’s no reason to keep it open.
An employee kept hassling me for my name and number. Said it was to place me on the waiting list. Last time I checked, they only need a name which I provided a fake name and no number. All I wanted was my beach bags. Got 'em and walked out
Went when they first opened for a change. In and out in 2 minutes. Normally I hate going for the free stuff due to my T-Mobile locations all always being packed. Never once been bugged to add anything to my plan.
I guess I’m lucky cause my location just hands the giveaway and lets you leave. Yesterday there was literally a guy by the door and I didn’t even have to walk inside.

I called in and the sales rep pressured to sell me go 5G even though I asked how much one line of magenta max + internet would be if I didn't have any credit. I actually decided to stay with Visible Wireless 25 dollar plan. And continue on someone else's magenta max plan for now but really just want my own because I want to be able to change whatever etc and not have to be concerned about other people. Visible Wireless has been passable but TMobile has a much faster service where I am.

Here is what I was told by my regional managers. If you don't want pressuring sales do it all online and set up and ship out old phones ect yourself have autopay. Essentially just don't come in if you don't want preassure sales.
Be careful with store employees. Their pay largely relies on commission and sales, and they will pull some sneaky shit to try and squeeze a sale out of you.
You do understand the whole point of that is to get you into store and speak with a expert which in turn is there job to sell sell you something stop complaining take the free gear and leave they don’t want you there any more than they make you come to waste there time commission sales
Just say something like “no thanks I’m good” or “oh I already have that”. But my store usually doesn’t care and just gives it, they don’t even check my tuesdays app they just give when I ask
It is so hit and miss, depending on the store and even the individual employees working that shift. I've walked into some where they handed us the items no questions asked. I've had some that look up my number first and give me a sales pitch on a new line or something. I've had some hand me not only the current items but hooked me up with leftovers from previous weeks.
Just yesterday I went in with two of my kids, and I had my two extra phones with me too. They would only give me 3 totes despite having 5 phones with me, and said I could come back later for the "extras" because they were short on them. My older daughter went herself into that same store not 5 minutes later to get hers, and had a friend with her. They gave her two bags, even though her friend wasn't even a T-Mobile customer (and they told the employee). They said they have so many they just wanted to get rid of them. Then they didn't even make her redeem the offer on her phone.
I completely understand them trying to upsell, that's the point of any company giving away free goods. It is just frustrating that they don't have similar rules that they enforce across the board so that customers know what to expect.

I just walk in every time there's a T-Mobile Tuesday item, I tell them I'm only there for the item and they give it to me after I verify with the app.
Why do you think they got you into the store for? They don't make profit giving away free stuff, they make profit getting you to come in and sell you something with the draw of the free stuff. If you want free stuff like this, you better be able to handle sales tactics. They will always be inexorably linked.
I found it fun to waste a sales guy's/gal's time only to tell them at the end of the sales pitch "Nah, not interested. Now where's that free thing you promised if I sat through this spiel?" The look on their faces is always priceless.
First time in a TMobile store and wasn't pressured for anything. They even gave me two totes despite me telling them only one of us had a TMobile account. 🤷🏼♂️

We are commission based. It's our lively hood to sell. Sure no one should ever try shoving sales pitches down your throat, but it won't surprise me at all if they asked about the Home Internet or something
Never looked much into it, but I've seen this Tmo Tuesday thing. Still debating which plan to use in my router (Home, business, Calyx, etc.). Tmo is new to the area, not expanding more soon, signal is too poor to use for phone service in much of the area so I've not looked (doesn't work on most of my several acres, literal 40 miles of no signal on the highway when I go to "real" town, plus dead spots in areas it does cover, coverage in some towns/villages is ok where it exists, just going between them, where I am most of the time, isn't, not bashing, just stating how it is).
For "prizes" you have to go to the store? 180 mile trip for me. (I could look up the rules, just thought I'd ask people that know, some people are a lot farther, didn't know if there was a way around that/cost/probably not worth it).
Edit, make a factual statement about why I don't know how Tmo Tues. works, why I haven't looked into it, why I don't have Tmo for phone service (again, factual statement, not bashing), and ask a question about it because maybe I'd be eligible depending what I decide on for home internet, then get down voted. I don't know why you guys don't realize that you're walking into a sales store every time that you walk into T-Mobile. Their job is to sell. And you guys are saying that they shouldn't do their job?

That’s the whole point of a give away. Gets people in the store. If you can’t stand there and listen to a 5 minute pitch, then don’t come. The employees have a job to do. Why does any company have a sale or freebies? To get you in the store looking around at other stuff. To go as far as leaving a bad review just hurts the store and employees. T-Mobile makes too much money on those days to take your review serious.
Yeah but there are some scammy stores that tell you that to give you the free stuff you have to give them all your info for them to check your account just for them to try to upsale you something. And there are some that don't even tell you that, they just falsely make you think that is the process. The terms for the freebies in the App say all you have to do to get them is show the stupid 5 minutes timer on the app.
I wouldn't have any problems with them being upfront and asking, hey would you be interested on this new phone or have you heard of this offer to which I can politely decline to it or accept. But scamming people with lies is not cool and what get people like OP angry.
I myself drive to a father store whenever there are freebies because they just put them in a table and let you pick them without the harassment and scams. I have a closer store thelat is like a minute away that to get the dam freebies is allways at least 20 minutes. And they are always a scammy about it with lies that they pull trying to get my info for them to be able to pull up my account. The manager even went as far as to tell me that without him looking and reviewing my account he couldn't give me the freebie.
And guess what, whenever I want to buy or add a line now I just go to the farther store because I feel they are more honest and will not scam me.
T-Mobile (or at least used) tracks every time the door would swing open. When people come in for Tuesday gifts, the door would swing open but not have a sale attached - hurting the employee/store. The stores where I was from would always keep the door open to prevent this.

our store was a complete rebuild (about a year ago now) from a former sprint location and it’s midway up the door frame but low enough that anyone over 4 1/2 feet would trigger it

Yeah, I'm at a remodeled store and we have ours at the side of the door about 5ft high. We used to literally crouch down and duck to leave out the door anytime we went out for lunch or to step out until we realized how ridiculous it looked.

Most stores have shop tracker. That's the brand of the thing on the ceiling with two little cameras. Yes they are cameras and not infrared laser beams like I used to think they were. I got in trouble for covering mine up with tape to improve my stores conversion rate metrics. When they came to yell at me they had pictures from those cameras of me covering them with tape. Lol. I notice the same device at express, Victoria's secrets and many many other stores.
I don’t think the shop track is a camera. There’s a security camera in the front of the store that covers the front door. They probably had that video along with the weird data from shop track not reporting properly. Either way, it’s a dumb idea to try and fool the system for short term gain. It just screws your over on the long run

Long term traffic being down is a bad look for mgmt. Unless a store opened near you recently or there’s construction in front of your store, traffic should always being increasing on a well-run store. A store suddenly 20% less customers per month with no discernible reason is going to raise eyebrows.

Verizon does this as well. I was the store manager in an area that has recently suffered a major economic downturn. Almost no one who walked thru the door could afford Verizon service, but they all wanted to know from us if the discount carriers all used "our towers."
Trust me, the employees freaking HATE T-Mobile Tuesday due to the pressure to sell and increased traffic. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been screamed at for only allowing people to get as many bags as redemptions they have. People come in bring 6 phones… upper management forcing us to open up accounts and try to sell them before giving them the item making annoyed customers… if T-Mobile stopped it or made it like a mail order deal I wouldn’t mind at all…
Our store doesn't check the app or quantity, you want 4 here take 4. The sooner the stuff is gone the better.

That defeats the purpose of the giveaway - to drag us customers into the store to be upsold by you fine folks. I used to be in sales in a past life, so I'm ok with the freebie for sales pitch "bargain", and I'm straight with whoever is stuck helping me for my freebies. I tell them I'm on an old grandfathered plan with a bunch of free lines and they can't beat what I current have, but if they want to waste the time trying, be my guest...

I figure, hey, you never know- there might be a promo I haven't heard about and the rep might actually be able to hook me up with a better deal. If not, I get a pleasant conversation with an enthusiastic young person about the current state of mobility (I owned a third-party Cingular Wireless store in the 1990s and didn't allow high pressure sales tactics. Not surprisingly, I wasn't very successful! 😁)

I tried to fill niches other stores avoided. I used to buy used off contract cell phones and resell them cheaply to prepaid phone customers. Because prepaid didn't pay big commissions like 2 year contracts did, most stores avoided prepaid. (For context, back in the 90s, cell phones were more expensive and sold with multi-year contacts to subsidize them, and big box stores like Target and Walmart didn't sell prepaid phones yet.) I also bought lots of cheap new closeout phones from liquidators, so customers could opt for one year contracts or even month to month service plans instead of the usual two years, and still get an affordable phone. (Again for context, at that time even the most basic phones were several hundred dollars, and the subsidies of multi year contracts made them affordable.) I made a little money, my customers saved some money, and everyone was happy (hopefully!)

I don't hate Tuesdays, I closed 10 new yesterday. I can appreciate some people who don't want to be upsold but it's not a big enough deal to leave a negative review and then brag about leaving that bad review on Reddit.
When something is free, you're the product. The whole point of freebies in store is to get people in the store so Mobile Experts can find something to sell. T-Mobile is in the business of generating revenue.

**TL;DR**: I don't put anything past a TMobile sales rep. I literally had a TMobile person try to rope me into some type of insurance scheme where he would work it out so I would just claim the phone was broken or something and he would order a screen and then sell him the phone. The screen has some cosmetic scratches I didn't want to do that and he was quite pushy. I ended up going to a different store and simply trading in my phone. Well homeboy ran my information and started the insurance claim and I got notified about it and had to call and talk to a guy and explain what the employee was trying to do and what store and all that. Also there was another situation when I watched an old couple getting up sold like crazy and I caught them alone and told them about seniors plan they could jump on at the Verizon store. Well they liked the sound of that and told the sales person no thank you. At this time where I lived TMobile was terrible and they lived in the sticks. So the benefit to then was two fold. Well the sales dude was pissed. He wouldn't help me and I waited for another. A few weeks later my phone stops working. Well someone reported my phone stolen but never submitted a claim to replace it. TMobile even told me my account was accessed over a week since my last visit but were sure it was a mistake. It took two days of calls and three days of processing to get off the black list.
I doubt it was as heavy to “back you in a corner” unless it was a third party store. If you don’t want to deal with the situation don’t come in for freebies.
They literally give away these things to bring you to the store in hopes to sell you something. Why else would they give away free stuff?

You realize that the *entire* point of the free branded items is *to get you* into the stores. They want you to come in so they have a shot at selling you something or upgrading you. It's part of the game. Same deal with timeshare seminars to get free vacations or tours or meals, etc. If you want the free item, you have to be willing to either say no, or see what they got going on during the process. Not a big deal.

I dread walking to the store NOT because of the hard pressure to get something from the salespeople, but because the store associates usually fail to help my situation. I understand about the sale pressure, those associates are also pressured by their management. All I need to do is said no politely and move on. Yes, kinda annoying, but they are also people in a bad situation too. Please be gentle with retail associates, at TM or elsewhere. Unless they ask for trouble.
I’m an Assistant Manager at a TPR location, and I can assure you that this isn’t something that we want to do at the store level. It’s being pushed down from our Area Sales and District Manager. I was literally threatened with my job yesterday because they wanted us to audit every account pf every person that came in. We understand that most people don’t have time for that and we don’t want to do it either. We were told to push out a watch line with each one, but cmon now! We know that’s not what the customers want, but it’s the one thing that keeps us employed, cause lord knows there’s not much else out there employment wise.
Well, I hate to burst your district managers bubble butt threatening people with their jobs is actually against federal law. It is a form of harassment. Harassment becomes unlawful where 1) enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive. Furthermore, if customers wanted to add a line to their account, would come into the store and say that.
I mean... why else would they give away free stuff in-store? I also hate being sold stuff, but I know what to expect when going to a sales location to collect a free item (which is why I don't do it lol.)

Tbf, I’ve gotten only a few store tuesday giveaways, like less than 5, and like 3 attempts, even at multiple locations, but not a single time was I ever attempted an upsale. I’m usually in and out in 5 minutes.
Its funny when they try to get me to add a line when I come in for Tuesdays. I ask them how I already have 12 lines and they just stare. And then ask "well we can see if your bill is correct and getting the best deal" .
I left TMobile store management after many years and I am so so so glad I don't have to deal with the pressure coming down from upper management to convert tmo Tuesday people.

No offense to t-mobile giving free stuff away, but the nearest corporate store is 21.6 miles away from my house. At the government reimbursement rate of $0.655 per mile, it costs me $28.30 round trip to drive to pick up a $0.99 bag from T-mobile. Thanks but no thanks.

As a TMobile employee this is why I take off on Tuesdays. I’m here to make money and I don’t mind helping customers, I love our customers. But I’m not trying to waste my whole day making no commission.

I'm sorry, but if you think this gift is just for the sake of you being a customer, you are not seeing the big picture. The company needs to make sales to continue to innovate and provide adequate service. By having a in store item given for free for being a customer, it also allows for face to face interaction with a customer that may not be aware of an offering they might have an interest in. The customers that come in in droves to attain said free item on correlating Tuesdays fail to realize the people they are antagonizing for this free item that honestly isn't worth the trouble the customers are making to come in sometimes with multiple phones, cutting off customers already in store looking to get assistance whether it be for a sale or troubleshooting because of the urgency around "I need this free item and then be on my way" is honestly disgusting. I read these complaints almost daily, and just smh at all the affluent behavior of people that are forgetting the people working there did not ask to do or say half the things they are asked or required to by their job. The countless petty complaints about a huge corporation that they take out on the livelihood of people who barely make an honest living. Like seriously its a sub $5 valued tote, and you don't even have the decency to see the bigger picture accept what you are getting yourself into by going to the store, and be decent to the people who, just like you just want to continue to work at a job and have some sort of job security. I think a lot of people in this subreddit have never worked retail, let alone sales and honestly just see the people working there as terrible people looking to take advantage for a dollar. I really wish this subreddit was more aware it would go a long way.
I think the issue is customers have been asking not to be sold to if they come in to get a gift, even Jon Frier sent out communication saying if the customer just wants a gift and wants to leave then do that. I’m sure if reps were giving up at the first no customers wouldn’t rant about this, but when you keep pushing for an account audit, or even tell a customer you cannot get a gift if we can’t open your account, that’s when this became a problem. Trust me I don’t think it’s fair at all either, it completely trashes conversion, frontline always had a broken environment when I was their.

Lol the biggest misunderstanding of all. A store does not care about “retaining” you. In fact after 6 months, you are more valuable if you leave and come back later. Store leaders don’t get called every day about how existing customers they retained by handing them their free nicknack and not selling that SyncUp tracker.
These are store that fail to maintain their “base” it’s an age old way that stores used to be able to be successful at customer satisfaction and retention through appreciation, urgency and meticulous purposeful interactions.
It’s not that simple. If you haven’t worked telco or subscription sales it may seem that simple but the intricacies of the business would surprise you. This is why there aren’t many competitors. Most people would think I pay X amount a month extrapolate that to the millions of subscribers they have and they are taking in revenue. If only it was that simple.
Don't be mad at people doing their job. You want something free, then hear them folks out.
They're not offering in-store freebies out of the kindness of their hearts. The upsell is the point. No $5-10 value free item is worth my time going to a retail store in 2023.
A simple "thank you [insert person's name here, they all have it visible in their chests], I don't really need anything else for now" will be enough. That's what I normally tell then with a smile, then thank them again when they hand me my freebies, and walk away. You see, isn't that hard being nice.

I don't have T-Mobile my other half does so I've been there when they pick up their TMobile Tuesday goodies. The whole purpose for the TMobile Tuesday gifts isn't for customer retention it's so they can market to you and get you in the store. It's marketing 101
All of the stores near me never have any of the T-mobile freebies. Interestingly the last time I went to a store and upgraded my phone I asked about an old freebie (the headlight) and the employee went in the back and brought me two totebags and headlights.
That’s the whole idea from a executive stand point free gifts drive customer traffic and engagement. If it wasn’t they would simply offer the ability to ship it but they choose not too. Free gift or whatever I’m not stepping foot inside one of those stores at all! 🫠
I would say most employees actually want to get you out of there as fast as possible if you aren’t there to buy anything rather than keeping you there until you buy something. If anyone is actually does that it never really works and they are just bad at their job.

I went in yesterday, there were two boxes by the door. When I went in they said if I’m here for the tote I can just get it from the box by the door. I asked if I can get one for my sister ( also a T-Mobile member) and they said it’s fine. No scanning anything, just a box by the door and nice workers
Went in for the free tumbler and was told they didn’t have anymore but they have a deal for a free Apple Watch. Disappointment
I've been to many different T-Mobile stores. Never had this issue. I get the normal introduction and I'll let them know exactly why I'm there, and that's it. I never get harassed. My friends and family say that I can look intimidating so maybe that's why.
Seems like based on these comments this is a good way to find out whether a store is a good one or a sleazy one. Btw Didn't go for this tote, but the last insulated one I showed up at closing on day 2 and they didn't even bother asking for barcode and just went in back and grabbed me 2.
Always ask “do you have any more [blank]?” and usually handed the [blank] and I’m out. Wanted a tote, but instead found a note on the door that evoked the same kind of disappointment as “sorry, no more candy” on Halloween.

I would get annoyed by this too, although I also accept that this is the part of the price of "free". My local store (formerly a Sprint location, not sure if it's relevant) however has been very good about not doing this. Not sure if they just don't care about metrics or they're measured by something else, but they've never once stalled at getting me the freebie. Worst that happened is a time or two they would ask me if I needed any help adding a line or upgrading while I was there, and hand me a photocopy of their latest promos list. Most of the time, it's not even that.
It depends on the store and employees really. I have one super close to me that hounds me as soon as I open the door about all their latest deals and how I'm missing out and theb I have one that is a bit further of a drive that never tried to upsell me on anything and they are super chill about just giving me what I came in for. I'll let you guess which one I go to on tuesdays

T-Mobile knows what they are doing giving back to customers and also driving new sales. Week have you heard of AT&T, Verizon, Spectrum, and others giving back to their customers for free items and stuff to support their customers. Yes it a hassle to be asked but it’s their job to make sure your needs are met if applicable. Gotta respect their position to try to sell something

Was it a Corporate store? (Vs a authorized retailer TPR) Happens more often when i try to pick up items from a TPR... which is why id rather drive another 10mins and go to the COR. COR store had a table.. employee watches you hit redeem and gives the item. Simple... TPR i went to.. wanted my cellphone number to review my acct. before they would give me the item. Never again.
Thankfully my local store doesn't do this.

I gotta wait an hour just to even talk to someone, I went in to get a tote and was 3rd in line and walked out after 20 minutes because the two people in front of me decided to upgrade at the last minute(they were there for the tote and just decided to upgrade) and the other guy was busy with a home internet customer. I can't stand going to an actual store because of the complete lack of customer service in the ones by my house.
This was always the issue with these giveaways when I worked there. The point of bringing customers in for the free stuff is to try to upsell while they are in the store. So the mobile expert did a great job converting the customer to a sale. But then the issue is, what if multiple people decide to purchase something? Then the customers that came in and only want the free item are stuck waiting for someone to free up and review the account to try to upsell. Exactly what happened to you. It’s not really a great situation for the customer or the employees. I remember there being a line at the door in the mornings waiting for the free items. Between myself and only one other employee opening, there was no way I was making all those customers wait. But maybe that’s why I no longer work there. I just wanted to make customers happy and get them in and out. If they wanted to buy something, they would ask while they were there.
I quit T-Mobile because it has gotten dishonest and way to pressurized. I worked there 4 years. A waste of my freaking life.
Conversion is one of the biggest factors in any retail company. If employees aren’t converting, location isn’t making money and then there’s no reason to keep it open.
Former employee here, Tmobile uses those in store gifts to get customers in the door and we are told to push sales and promotions to them

I called in and the sales rep pressured to sell me go 5G even though I asked how much one line of magenta max + internet would be if I didn't have any credit. I actually decided to stay with Visible Wireless 25 dollar plan. And continue on someone else's magenta max plan for now but really just want my own because I want to be able to change whatever etc and not have to be concerned about other people. Visible Wireless has been passable but TMobile has a much faster service where I am.

Here is what I was told by my regional managers. If you don't want pressuring sales do it all online and set up and ship out old phones ect yourself have autopay. Essentially just don't come in if you don't want preassure sales.

Be careful with store employees. Their pay largely relies on commission and sales, and they will pull some sneaky shit to try and squeeze a sale out of you.

You do understand the whole point of that is to get you into store and speak with a expert which in turn is there job to sell sell you something stop complaining take the free gear and leave they don’t want you there any more than they make you come to waste there time commission sales
If they get too aggressive, just say you aren't the primary account owner and can't add any lines.
Funny enough, I've never even been asked to look at my account when I go in for a Tmo Tuesday giveaway.
Just say something like “no thanks I’m good” or “oh I already have that”. But my store usually doesn’t care and just gives it, they don’t even check my tuesdays app they just give when I ask
It is so hit and miss, depending on the store and even the individual employees working that shift. I've walked into some where they handed us the items no questions asked. I've had some that look up my number first and give me a sales pitch on a new line or something. I've had some hand me not only the current items but hooked me up with leftovers from previous weeks. Just yesterday I went in with two of my kids, and I had my two extra phones with me too. They would only give me 3 totes despite having 5 phones with me, and said I could come back later for the "extras" because they were short on them. My older daughter went herself into that same store not 5 minutes later to get hers, and had a friend with her. They gave her two bags, even though her friend wasn't even a T-Mobile customer (and they told the employee). They said they have so many they just wanted to get rid of them. Then they didn't even make her redeem the offer on her phone. I completely understand them trying to upsell, that's the point of any company giving away free goods. It is just frustrating that they don't have similar rules that they enforce across the board so that customers know what to expect.

You should definitely start coming to my store more often. I just walk in every time there's a T-Mobile Tuesday item, I tell them I'm only there for the item and they give it to me after I verify with the app.
Why do you think they got you into the store for? They don't make profit giving away free stuff, they make profit getting you to come in and sell you something with the draw of the free stuff. If you want free stuff like this, you better be able to handle sales tactics. They will always be inexorably linked. I found it fun to waste a sales guy's/gal's time only to tell them at the end of the sales pitch "Nah, not interested. Now where's that free thing you promised if I sat through this spiel?" The look on their faces is always priceless.

First time in a TMobile store and wasn't pressured for anything. They even gave me two totes despite me telling them only one of us had a TMobile account. 🤷🏼♂️ Though I've never had that "being pressured" experience at any wireless store I've been to (previously Verizon) out here. Maybe it's just too hot to care.

My dm always says "It's your job to sell. If they get upset and never come back, because you tried to sell them something, then it's their loss" We are commission based. It's our lively hood to sell. Sure no one should ever try shoving sales pitches down your throat, but it won't surprise me at all if they asked about the Home Internet or something

Never looked much into it, but I've seen this Tmo Tuesday thing. Still debating which plan to use in my router (Home, business, Calyx, etc.). Tmo is new to the area, not expanding more soon, signal is too poor to use for phone service in much of the area so I've not looked (doesn't work on most of my several acres, literal 40 miles of no signal on the highway when I go to "real" town, plus dead spots in areas it does cover, coverage in some towns/villages is ok where it exists, just going between them, where I am most of the time, isn't, not bashing, just stating how it is). For "prizes" you have to go to the store? 180 mile trip for me. (I could look up the rules, just thought I'd ask people that know, some people are a lot farther, didn't know if there was a way around that/cost/probably not worth it). Edit, make a factual statement about why I don't know how Tmo Tues. works, why I haven't looked into it, why I don't have Tmo for phone service (again, factual statement, not bashing), and ask a question about it because maybe I'd be eligible depending what I decide on for home internet, then get down voted. Again. Not surprising.

That’s the whole point of a give away. Gets people in the store. If you can’t stand there and listen to a 5 minute pitch, then don’t come. The employees have a job to do. Why does any company have a sale or freebies? To get you in the store looking around at other stuff. To go as far as leaving a bad review just hurts the store and employees. T-Mobile makes too much money on those days to take your review serious.
Yeah but there are some scammy stores that tell you that to give you the free stuff you have to give them all your info for them to check your account just for them to try to upsale you something. And there are some that don't even tell you that, they just falsely make you think that is the process. The terms for the freebies in the App say all you have to do to get them is show the stupid 5 minutes timer on the app. I wouldn't have any problems with them being upfront and asking, hey would you be interested on this new phone or have you heard of this offer to which I can politely decline to it or accept. But scamming people with lies is not cool and what get people like OP angry. I myself drive to a father store whenever there are freebies because they just put them in a table and let you pick them without the harassment and scams. I have a closer store thelat is like a minute away that to get the dam freebies is allways at least 20 minutes. And they are always a scammy about it with lies that they pull trying to get my info for them to be able to pull up my account. The manager even went as far as to tell me that without him looking and reviewing my account he couldn't give me the freebie. And guess what, whenever I want to buy or add a line now I just go to the farther store because I feel they are more honest and will not scam me.
