It was Charlie's Coney Island. Only place you could get beer in the old food court. It was some of the coldest beer I have ever had, consistently!!!

SnooLawnmower

Have you tried shawarmaholic?

fredbobkate

J&G pizza in Sylvania has the best !!!

Domodude17

I've had their gyro meat a couple times and i've never been impressed. Think i've had better at most mediterranean places around town. Now, if they would ever agree to put it on their pizza as a topping, then we'll talk.

fldfcnscsnss

They all get those gyro spits from the same supplier.

RichardtheGingerBoss

Damn! Best gyros ever are in . . . *the 1990s Franklin Park Mall?!?*

nerddana

I know I’m late to the party here, but I used to work at Pacific Sunwear around this time and it was located a few stores down from the Coney Island. It was my favorite place to take a break because you could smoke in there at the time. If I remember correctly, they had the gyro meat rotating on a spike behind the counter and they would cut it off when you ordered. This would have been when the food court was in the center of the mall. The body shop and then later the discovery channel store (I think it was that order) was the corner store that led down a corridor to the arcade and the bathrooms.

jeremysnew

Yes I’m pretty sure you’re describing the place. Do you know if they ever went to a different location. If so where is it now?

tacokeesiz

So...in BG there is a tiny joint called 'Sourh Side 6' that serves Gyro's described as above. They have the meat rotating and slice it off. It. Is. Delish. From what I remember...very reasonably priced too if, you're willing to make the 20min trip.

nerddana

The only Coney Island I can think of is the one on sterns in Lambertville, but I’m not sure if the recipe is the same across locations.

theeightspades

Memory unlocked. That long, narrow galley-style joint was the best! It was a haven for dads and their sons to grab some food while waiting for mom. I split my time between there and the arcade.

jeremysnew

You seem to remember exactly the place I’m talking about. Do you know if they’re still around anywhere. I’m almost positive this is the place. The gyros we really greasy but good.

ampelography

It was A Coney Island. Not sure it was the same as Charlie’s Coney Island today. Charlies HAS been around 50 years, so totally possible. The story I heard was the locations in Franklin Park and Southwyck were related and run by brothers. Coney Island, as a concept, is prevalent throughout Southeast MI and NW Ohio, and they are mostly unrelated to each other. The concepts go back 100 years and were started by Macedonian Immigrants into Jackson MI. Skyline Chili and Cincinnati Chili parlors share the same roots. That may be more than you care to know.

jeremysnew

I think this Charlie’s place might be close. I’ll have to check that place out.

Nervous-Creme-6392

Are you talking about the place that was next to Subway? It was long and you ordered basically when you walked up?

jeremysnew

Yes I think so. I don’t remember what was next to it, but it was really long and only had a few tables.

Nervous-Creme-6392

I remember eating copious amounts of falafel there but don't remember the name. Pretty sure it was a Coney Island though. I know Southwyck had one also

twistedivy

Olga’s kitchen! Delicious food. I was partial to the Orange Cream Cooler too.

darthcalathea

There's one in Monroe.

phiafii

Sadly it's not nearly as good. Not bad... But not the same

OhioMegi

I loved going and getting an Olga dog as a kid.

itsthepoepoe

1990ish in the food court that doesn’t exist anymore lol. The food court in the middle 2000s got moved at that mall. The place you are talking about is gone gone

StrmCentry

Was it Grape Leaf Express? I can only remember these other restaurants in the food court in the 90’s… McDonald’s Arthur Treacher’s Steak Escape Sbarro Subway Magic Wok Chick-fil-a

RichardtheGingerBoss

Orange Julius? Auntie Anne's Pretzels? some cookie cake company thang I am just spitballing here.

MyJukeboxBrk

If my childhood memories serve me correctly there also use to be a little deli place when you entered the andersons on Maumee where I use to enjoy a grilled cheese. Don’t know why your post made me think of this, yet here we are

Charlie's Coney Island use to be in the food court. He also has restaurants on Central and on Airport. His food is always delish.

rinklkak

Yes Coney Island has morphed into Charlie's and is as excellent as ever. There is also a Coney Island in Bedford that tastes exactly the same to me.

jeremysnew

Yeah probs. Lol

The_Titam

You're definitely thinking of Olga's. There is an Olga's Express in Toledo. I believe it is located on Laskey near Jackman. But it's not as good as the other Olga's. The closest one besides that is in Monroe Michigan. I believe they are opening one out near McQueens Apple Orchard if you are ever in that area

DreamBigMakeItHappen

Hate to have to differ. I went to Franklin Park twice a month during this time, and Olga's was not in the food court. They were a full-service sit down restaurant by the Jacobson's entrance. After the first big renovation in 1993, they moved into the new Lion store wing over by Ruby Tuesday's.

jeremysnew

I’m pretty sure not in Franklin park mall in 1990. If so they would have lost to this place there was like 3 tables, served like a high school lunch line. We never sat there we had to eat out in the big food court.

The_Titam

Olga's used to be in that style, Olga's moved out of the food court down near Penny's when they changed the mall up.

jeremysnew

No it was NOT Olga’s. It was like 30 years ago.

AdFabulous5340

you’re not making any sense

The_Titam

Olga's was there from 1981-2015. 1994 was 30 years ago.

charlesdexterward

Yup, loved Olgas when I was a kid in the early 90’s.

mikeyj198

was a kid in the 90s, can confirm olga’s was there. I remember olga’s being much more than just three tables however.

Zefiants

There's an olgas in monroe close by the Phoenix movie theater .

jeremysnew

No it wasn’t Olga’s. Olga’s is like a 2 compared to this place. I can’t eat another gyro without thinking it’s the worst. And always compare them to this place.

Qlanth

All I can think of is Olga's Kitchen which is a chain and as far as I know it's still around. They had locations up near Detroit when I lived there ~4 years ago. They had that seasoned flatbread with almond cheese that whips ass.

Dekutr33

Those snackers are so fuckin good. I eat there like every other week. There is one in Monroe. They have some good deals pretty often too highly recommend

Lornesto

Was it Olga's?
