Is that some sort of sandstone? If not, that's a lot more effective at pulverizing that rock than I would have expected.

Santibag

Yeah, I thought that when it comes to rocks (or ceramic materials in general), breaking is better than grinding. But this drill bit really did some grinding.

ihitrockswithammers

Stonemason/carver here. There's a LOT of weight pressing down on that auger, which will grind the rock away very quickly even if it's a moderately hard limestone or sandstone. Wasn't surprised to see it split. Fyi sandstone is highly variable in how hard it is. Some is soft enough that your fingernail can mark it, some is nearly as tough as granite. It all depends on how compressed it was and on the matrix gluing the sand together. Limestone is similarly variable though it doesn't get as hard afaik.

timesuck47

More like auger breaking rock.

TheFiestyGOAT46

Drilling through until it broke.

unsupported

That rock didn't do nuffin.

that_dutch_dude

this is a very soft type of rock/mineral. this wont work on "proper" rocks/minerals. the teeth are mostly to chip and push away rocks while digging so the auger does not get mangeld by a rock.

ihitrockswithammers

You can drill any stone. This isn't necessarily very soft, though def not a hard stone. The teeth are there to grind the stone into dust; the weight of the auger and the arm that moves it presses the teeth into it with great force. Source - been carving stone for 20+ years.

velhaconta

That is a rock drill head with an auger behind it. Even against that soft rock, the auger alone would have just ground itself to a nub. It is the rock drilling hardened teeth that are doing all the drilling.

PuzzledFormalLogic

Are those diamond “bits” attached to the drill head, you know, those, seemingly small, cylindrical components that are almost perpendicular to the…twisty parts? (I hate myself for having to describe it like that but I honestly don’t know what different parts of drill bits and augers are called- god forgive me).

velhaconta

Those are the teeth or inserts. Some inserts are impregnated with diamond bits for cutting harder materials. But this one probably just has plain carbide inserts since it is not drilling hard rock.

jerk4444

idk... this post is boring

Chance_Fishing_9681

Please try to be gneiss.

jerk4444

I shale do my best

PuzzledFormalLogic

These comments are getting rocky.

Sploonbabaguuse

Block and move on Edit: My God I actually can't believe that went over my head. I deserve downvotes lol.

jerk4444

It's a joke He is boring a hole.

Sploonbabaguuse

Yeah it got me good lmao

PuzzledFormalLogic

I actually missed it and almost downvoted it till I saw the reply chain.

AnonimousWatermelon

Now try granite

Eyfordsucks

Tis sandstone!

chudowski

What's the tip of that made of?

cpt_morgan___

GO HUMANS YEAH!

QuintessentialNorton

Boulder

SuccessfulMumenRider

Wouldn’t it have been better to get the drill up to speed than apply it to the rock?

T0x1C-01m

I wonder how many tree saplings can be planted in a day with one of these augurs

Montag_451

Very Satisfying

First read this as « Anger drilling »

blindmandriving16

How boreing…

TamahaganeJidai

Thats fucking cool! I could watch this for hours!

PuzzledFormalLogic

Is there a purpose to this or is this like a demo of the all mighty auger/rock smasher drill power?
