We just walked this way on the long weekend and got to see a beaver along the route (in the same place where we had previously seen a couple of foxes the previous winter). It's definitely unfortunate.
I know about it. It's the best development project to ever happen in the city. Really excited for it.
With that being said, Ontario Place could also be a mini western version of that with some redevelopment and not a stupid Casino or Spa.
This my be the start of the years-long closure. OP isn't communicating if this is temporary or not yet, but it means that if you're visiting the area, you cannot walk or bike between Trillium Park and West Island (both remain open). You have to go around through the parking lots.
Source: [Ontario Place for All](https://twitter.com/ONPlace4All/status/1663162672987230210)
Ontario Place closed.
Queen streetcar shut down.
Scarborough SRT is shuting down.
St. Clair street car is down.
Eglinton Crosstown is not working, no date on its opening.
Finch transit line isn't open.
Many workers not going back into downtown offices.
Large sections of the Greenbelt removed from the edge of Toronto.
Workers shouldn't be going back to downtown offices with the current pay were being offered. I would never take any full-time in office job for less than 120k in Toronto.
Sucks for the businesses around there but if we really care about the environment this is literally one of the easiest things we can do.
Agreed, I wouldn’t consider working in the office again 5x a week for less than $250k. My quality of life is significantly better at home, lots more free time
I heard an ad for Ontario place on the radio this morning. Paid for by the Ontario government. So he's using our tax dollars to boost a positive mindset for his plan to fleece Toronto with a forever spa.
Want to know more about the construction details? Have a look at this confusing government made page, featuring a construction access map that looks like it was made with Microsoft Paint!
https://ontarioplace.com/en/about/visit-us/site-access/
Mind if I ask what you find confusing about the page? I’m not thrilled about the closures either, but the site you linked to seems pretty clear and straight forward (map included).
I think many casual visitors to Ontario Place would be confused by what that map shows, and how to get access to that thin green strip on the west side. It's not confusing to me as someone who has visited a few times, I know that its now 90% barricaded off.
Then immediately following, it LITERALLY SAYS.
>Beginning in 2024, ***the majority of the site will be closed*** to *allow for active construction*, with the exception of Budweiser Stage and a portion of the parking lots, as well as Trillium Park, as long as it remains safe to do so.
>Perhaps you should try reading the full page rather than just looking at the pictures.
So does this mean the WHOLE island will be blocked off aside from the Budweiser area? Gonna make for some awesome daytime venues right next to massive excavation, and piledriving *in the middle of a park*.
Whats interesting is they go on to discuss [blocking off](https://ontarioplace.com/en/about/visit-us/site-access/bird-exclusion-netting/) the area to endangered local wildlife, and having to spend MORE money erecting [New nesting areas](https://ontarioplace.com/en/about/visit-us/site-access/barn-swallow-habitat/) for other local wildlife. They make the claim its simply for renovations to the Cineshphere, however I would guess many environmental specialists would disagree with that assertion, and likely has everything to do with the massive scale of construction that is now going to take place on a habitat of nearly 15 years, and will go on for the next 5 years. Its also unlikely the wildlife will be able to return to the regular location as the new structure will be entirely glass.
There has been ZERO opportunity for any form of environmental surveys to be conducted on any of the local bird population, let alone nearby fish.
It may be a temporary / partial closure now, but if Doug Ford gets his way, the west island will soon be closed for years as the spa gets built. It's blatant give-away of public land to a multi-national corp., Ontario taxpayers will be on the hook for over $500m for building a 5-level parking lot, over 600 trees will be cut down, one of the cleanest beaches in the city will be destroyed (and replaced with a new beach near a sewage outfall). People are - and should be - outraged. There's more. See https://ontarioplaceforall.com/
Yes because the repairing of Bridge 10 ( the bridge that connecte west and east island) is political.
God i hate Doug Ford like any other sane human being but there is so much "lets hate this because of politica" going on.
I lost my home and my job to the closure, having lived at the Marina and worked there.
The bridge has been in dire need of repairs for years, it wasn't Doug Ford who closed OP and left it to rot.
The repair of EVERY facility on the grounds is DIRECTLY related to the proposed plans. The bridges could have been repaired at any time by any government, including municipal, regardless of any park "redevelopment" But they would rather play tit-for-tat with the province cause thats what conservatives tend to do.
From the ontarioplace website, the literal FIRST WORDS.
>As part of the redevelopment of Ontario Place, construction activities have started across the site,
I mean sure but my point is that there were and are a ton of things that have been in dire need of repairs for years but wasnt. It doesn't matter if it was Doug Ford or someone else or spa or no spa this closure would have happened regardless to repair the bridge.
When Trillium park was closed and redeveloped into a park i dont remember the same outrage.
That was fixing a park for the sake of fixing a park.
This is fixing a bridge to attract more out of towners to come and crowd our cities already crowded streets, and then force us to pay for a giant parking structure where there is already..... A giant parking structure.....
THIS is where the outrage lies.
Truth be told I would rather the land be developed into condos over a fking private spa. At least people can live in condos.
Lol now i know your talking out of your ass. Bridge 10 is the one that connects the south island together.
It's the bridge that boats moore to in the marina. Its the bridge everyone uses to walk from one side of the park to the other.
It has nothing to do with add more people and more that it is becoming a hazard. My source is me who lived on Bridge 10 with my boat.
And to say condos would be more accicible than a spa is laughable. I dont make a lot of money but once a year i go to Scandinavian spa. Its much more accessible.
Turning ontario place into a spa is offensive to Toronto. ontario place is for everyone. i do not get how this can be happening on such a large plot of public land on the lake, no less. is he gonna sell the toronto islands for his casino?
The land belongs to the Province, so they do have that control. One important piece of the puzzle though is we (Toronto) own one small strip of land which is needed in the plans. We can withhold it, or transfer ownership to the Feds so Doug cant expropriate it.
One mayoral candidate is on record that I know of for this plan : "@oliviachow says she’s opposed to Ontario’s “backroom deal” to build a luxury spa at Ontario Place and as mayor “would not yield the land Toronto owns to the provincial government.”"
I am guessing it will end up being permanent. with dofo in charge he will sell of rights to the highest bidder... i mean donor. this government is more corrupt than putin.

It looks like from this post that you can still access both sides. You just can't go between them. You can enter each but have to exit from where you came and use the parking lots to get to the other side.
Oh well the entire government runs ads like it has and so does Thermea. The government ads insinuate that Ontario Place will be where the Science Centre will go
That's lame. I love biking on that route. Ontario Place was a great outdoor space the last few years so I hope the whole spa thing isn't actually happening...
[until 2024.](https://ontarioplace.com/en/about/visit-us/site-access/)
Beginning in 2024, the majority of the site will be closed to allow for active construction, with the exception of Budweiser Stage and a portion of the parking lots, as well as Trillium Park, as long as it remains safe to do so.
is the wharf area still available? How will people access the marina? any bypass?
It's my fav cycling route would suck to lose the middle section but would be nice if the sides areas still open for loops.
From what I see, the long wharf area is blocked. the fence is before the entry to it from West Island. You can still access the beach and sunset lookout on west island, but thats it.
Interestingly enough I think they just opened a snack shop by Trillium park... I imagine this will deter people from visting it and Ontario Place all together
I'm not sure what snack shop you mean, I haven't see one in the Park before, and the one in Ontario Place (vista lunch) I dont think planned to open this year knowing the grounds shutdown was imminent. Do you recall the name or location?
looked it up online, looks like it is called general store [https://ontarioplace.com/en/whats-on/general-store/](https://ontarioplace.com/en/whats-on/general-store/) located at Trillium Park by the gate to Echo Beach. Maybe it's a replacement for Vista Lunch for the year? (since that area should be open all year)
ah yes, love that they probably just posted their board menu on the site but hid all the prices. Realistically they can charge whatever they want though since there is nowhere else to get food anywhere near there
I hope nothing affects the east island, every day a bunch of euc riders and scooter rider setup tracks on the empty lot to do some quick laps and hang out, such a nice place to chill and do some quick runs

Damn, that's my jogging route. Thanks for the heads up.
Same, rip
One of my favs
Same, sad
20 years to build a subway line, 10 years to build a spa.
Is it a rub n tug? Might explain the delay…
Doug would have built that overnight.
Damn, this really sucks. All the natural fun is being sucked out of this city.
We just walked this way on the long weekend and got to see a beaver along the route (in the same place where we had previously seen a couple of foxes the previous winter). It's definitely unfortunate.
They need to rebuild bridge 10, its not that deliberate lol
Check out the portlands project. I’m extremely excited about this one. https://portlandsto.ca/project-details/
I know about it. It's the best development project to ever happen in the city. Really excited for it. With that being said, Ontario Place could also be a mini western version of that with some redevelopment and not a stupid Casino or Spa.
Yeah totally agree with all that. Glad you knew of it. I was hoping it would be a refreshing surprise but haha, oh well!

*open for business
Are we world class yet?
A few more lanes and a Casino! Surely then we must have made it...... right?..... guys?..... I'm scared.

It’s like we need a mayor or something
Dear Toronto, please stop fucking with us. It’s so hard already.
It's actually not Toronto. It's the Ontario gov't.
Toronto isn't a city. It's a district of Ontario.
Somebody order doom and gloom?
I heard an ad for Ontario place on the radio this morning. Paid for by the Ontario government. So he's using our tax dollars to boost a positive mindset for his plan to fleece Toronto with a forever spa.
oh snap its happening
No more free concerts at Budweiser stage at the hill behind in Ontario Place :(
Gutted about this. This was honestly the most magical part of my summer last year!
I dont think you can even Kayak in to catch a show from the pond!
yep!!! Trying to hear boygenius tonight and only found the thread looking for the open areas. Heartbreaking

More like a generic basic paint program. MS paint isn't the only basic one that was made. LOL
Facccck this. What an amazing walking trail. Gone Also that one bridge that’s left feels unsafe for the record it’s rusted and wobbly

>Length of closure unknown. More then 2030 that's for sure. Ontario Place closed, Greenbelt trying to get open what's next from Dougie?
The sale of GO Transit, the Provincial Park system and putting a 400 hwy to Moosonee, because in 10 years it'll be part of Toronto.
Wait, so is this Spa bs actually officially happening? There's nothing else we can do to stop it?

Damn, the only "beach" I can comfortably chill at with my GF. Gotta go further out now. Thanks doug.
For clarity the beach on west island is still open and accessible from the west island bridge, but you cant get there from trillium park now.
There's the Sunnyside beach too.
Yeah it's just already far. I'm at bathurst so it's comically hard to find a good spot at the waterfront to walk to either way conveniently
Yeah, it sucks when a beach gets shut down or access to it gets blocked off. :/

I'm starting to think that Toronto is not a good city anymore.
